About the novel
Eryk’s life changes abruptly when a winter drive in modern America ends in a world of walled cities, horse-drawn wagons, and an unfamiliar empire. Unable to explain where he came from, he is convicted of crimes he did not commit and chooses military service as a way to repay his debt, learn the language, and find protection. His first goal is practical: survive the Empire’s punishing training and earn a place among its soldiers.
Army life gives Eryk a structure in which he can rebuild himself. Training, battlefield responsibilities, and the people who serve beside him shape his growing sense of discipline and loyalty. His rare magical affinities offer a second path of development, while his experience as an outsider leaves him curious about the institutions and peoples beyond the imperial ranks.
As Eryk’s journey widens, military service gives way to travel, exploration, and increasingly consequential choices with a close-knit group of companions. Dungeons bring danger as well as unusual resources, and their strange workings turn exploration into a test of judgment and cooperation. The story follows Eryk as he weighs personal ambition against the needs and trust of those around him.
World and magic
The Telhian Empire is the central human power in Eryk’s early life. Its courts can impose debts that lead directly to military enlistment, and its standing army trains recruits for ordinary service as well as the elite Legion of the Lion. The capital of Telha, military camps, and distant settlements are linked by roads and horse-drawn travel. Translation amulets let people who do not share a language communicate, while magicians provide healing and other services within the army.
Magic works through aether, but people differ in their capacity to hold, channel, and shape it. An assessment tablet measures physical, mental, and magical attributes, recording both a current score and a potential ceiling. Affinities describe a person’s relationship to particular kinds of magic; spell forms can be shaped and imprinted on an aether core, though effective casting requires sufficient aptitude and control. Eryk’s unusual affinities draw him toward space and time magic even as he continues to develop through physical training.
Creatures can yield aether essences when collected, and consuming them can strengthen attributes. Minor and major essences improve current ability with differing force, while apex essences can also raise a person’s potential. This makes access to essences valuable and contested. Dungeons add another layer of uncertainty: their rooms may repopulate, their rewards vary, and their behavior can respond to the delvers. Exploring them requires the party to balance immediate gains against injury, limited resources, and the dungeon’s still-mysterious nature.
