Zyna
Zyna is a powerful fire mage whose ability makes her valuable to the Empire and a decisive figure in its political struggles. Her strength is matched by a fierce emotional response to loss, which can place both her enemies and herself at risk. (Chapters 98, 114, 212, 319)
Biography
A powerful mage with political value
When Renna leaves Dacian’s instruction, she is sent to Zyna’s coastal estate, where the High Mage lives as a baroness in a modest fishing town. Zyna welcomes Renna and gives her a place in the household, establishing her as both a powerful imperial mage and a landholder. Later, she becomes involved in Castile’s assignment: Zyna argues that a political arrangement will fail if it alienates Castile, showing that she understands both the value of Castile’s magic and the loyalty her company commands. (Chapters 98, 114, 212)
Zyna’s relationship with power is shaped by the Empire’s wars. She participates in campaigns and eventually takes Renna with her to the front, where Renna witnesses the destruction an avenging mage can cause. Zyna’s capacity to affect the battlefield is immense, but she does not always keep her anger separate from her strategy. (Chapters 113–118, 319)
Grief and retaliation
After Taurus dies, Zyna portals to the Agorian swamp and unleashes fire against the trolls. She repeatedly approaches the point where her aether channels would burn, and the warning pain does not immediately stop her. The episode earns her the epithets “Fire Witch,” “Flame Harbinger,” and “Dragon’s Fiery Breath,” and precedes her rise as High Mage of Fire and First Citizen. (Chapter 212)
Mila’s later death is a separate loss that ends Zyna’s restraint and helps drive her into Antonia’s plan against the Emperor. Zyna joins the coup, but Severus’s void lightning passes through her face and kills her. Konstantin later finds her body. Her death ends the career of a mage whose power and political judgment had made her central to the imperial struggle. (Chapters 212, 293, 306, 319)
Before her death, Zyna tells Eryk about Castile’s burned aether channels and estimates how many channeling essences might be needed to heal them. Eryk recalls the advice later, giving the group a concrete goal and a basis for judging whether a dungeon reward could help, even though the treatment remains uncertain. (Chapters 293, 324)
Appearance and personality
Zyna is a commanding and intense mage. She is politically perceptive and capable of planning around the ambitions of other powerful figures, but her grief can overwhelm caution. Her concern for allies such as Castile coexists with a willingness to use destructive force when she feels wronged. (Chapters 212, 319–324)
Magic and abilities
Zyna is a High Mage with fire as her defining specialty. Her spells can devastate groups of enemies, and she can travel by portal. Sustained or excessive use risks burning her aether channels, a danger she approaches during her attack on the trolls. (Chapters 114, 212)
Fire magic
Zyna’s fire magic is powerful enough to kill large numbers of trolls in the swamp. She channels repeatedly, nearing the injury threshold that would burn her aether channels. Her use demonstrates both the destructive potential of her magic and the physical risk of pushing it too far. (Chapter 212)
Relationships
- Castile Duval: A powerful ally whose loyalty and unique ability Zyna considers essential. She later helps Eryk understand the treatment needed for Castile’s injury. (Chapters 212, 319, 324)
- Renna: Takes Renna to the war front, where she exposes her to the consequences of large-scale magical violence. (Chapter 319)
- Mila: Her later death is a separate grief that contributes to Zyna joining the anti-Emperor plan. (Chapters 212, 293)
- Eryk Marko: Zyna is attracted to him and reflects that he reminds her of a former lover; he is also assigned as her guard for a time. (Chapters 114, 212)
