Mateo Evander

Mateo Evander is one of Eryk’s first friends in the Legion. His humor and openness help make the company feel like a community, and he continues to welcome companions even after war and separation reshape their lives. (Chapters 7–10, 200, 318–326)

Biography

A friend in the company

Mateo and Felix are assigned to help Eryk settle into Castile’s unit. Mateo jokes about Eryk’s rough training but also treats him as a companion from the beginning, sharing a bunkroom and introducing him to the company’s routines. He is willing to speak plainly about other soldiers, including warning Eryk that Konstantin is difficult to work with, which gives the newcomer useful context rather than leaving him to learn everything through failure. Mateo remains a steady presence through campaigns and the company’s changing fortunes. He shares meals and games with Maveith, and he helps make the goliath feel welcome when many people would rather keep their distance. When Maveith returns with his sister, Mateo is the first to break the awkward silence by asking to meet her, turning a tense arrival into an ordinary act of friendship. (Chapters 200, 318)

Friendship beyond the Legion

After the company’s service is disrupted, Mateo continues traveling with Eryk and other friends. He contributes to the group’s work and remains part of its shared plans, including the return of the goliaths and the later expedition. His friendship with Maveith is particularly clear in how naturally he welcomes Maveith’s family rather than treating their arrival as a political event. (Chapters 318–326)

Appearance and personality

Mateo is sociable and quick with a joke, but his humor is welcoming rather than cruel. He is comfortable approaching people and helps bridge the distance between Eryk, Maveith, and the rest of the company. (Chapters 7–10, 200, 318)
