Adrian

Adrian is one of Castile’s two company seconds, equivalent to a lieutenant, and one of the unit’s steadier decision-makers. He combines administrative discipline with concern for the soldiers under his command, helping keep the unit cohesive through battle, political scrutiny, and loss. (Chapters 7, 35, 63, 243)

Biography

Company leadership

Adrian manages the practical work that allows Castile’s company to function. He assigns defense positions, oversees supplies and accounts, and supports Castile’s decisions while preserving the unit’s readiness. When a tavern owner refuses service to Maveith because he is a goliath, Adrian publicly scolds the men who start a fight but privately rewards their defense of their companion. The response protects discipline without pretending the insult was acceptable. (Chapters 7–9, 19, 200)

He also recognizes ability and effort in inexperienced soldiers. Eryk’s unusual dimensional space becomes useful to the company, and Adrian assigns him responsibilities while continuing to judge his battlefield fitness realistically. As the company faces military setbacks, Adrian helps gather testimony and defend Castile against political blame, focusing on the choices and constraints that shaped the fall of Macha. (Chapters 13, 19, 35, 63–69)

War and imperial upheaval

Adrian remains close to Castile during the wars and the company’s political crises. He coordinates with the company’s other second, supports the tribunal strategy, and helps the unit navigate restrictions imposed after Castile’s judgment. His loyalty is practical as well as personal: he tries to preserve the soldiers and the company’s capacity even when resources are cut. (Chapters 9, 44–69, 92, 125)

During the confrontation with the Emperor, Adrian steps between him and Castile. The Emperor outmatches him physically, and Adrian’s runic blade cannot overcome the Emperor’s armor. (Chapter 243) In the later coup, Adrian again puts himself between a lethal threat and Castile. Severus stabs him; Castile realizes the wound is fatal and watches him die. Konstantin later finds Adrian’s body. His death removes one of Castile’s most trusted company seconds at the moment the Empire is being remade. (Chapters 293, 306, 320)

Appearance and personality

Adrian is a composed, experienced officer who often handles the company’s decisions and logistics. He can be firm in public and generous in private, and he tends to assess people by what they can safely contribute rather than by their status alone. (Chapters 9, 19, 35, 200)

Magic and abilities

Adrian is a trained legionnaire and commander rather than a spellcaster. His demonstrated strengths are organization and combat. His runic sword lets him challenge magically protected opponents, though it cannot overcome the Emperor’s armor. (Chapters 35, 243)
