Translation Amulet

The Translation Amulet is a magical device that lets Eryk communicate in the Empire’s language before he can speak it himself.

History

Arrival in the Empire

Magistrate Persius uses a translation medallion to question Eryk in prison, explaining that the court had received it on loan. After Eryk joins the Legion, he is issued a translation amulet charged by Damian. It lets him speak freely with the other recruits, though it works only while worn around his neck. Eryk tries to charge it himself and gradually learns enough of the language to communicate without it. (Chapters 1–3)

Continued use

Eryk refers to the translation amulet as the only magical item he used during Legion training. Much later, while reading an Elvish text, he removes his translation amulet and puts on a sapphire clarity pendant instead. The amulet’s later custody is not established. (Chapters 40, 329)

Abilities and properties

  • When worn against the body, the amulet translates speech between Eryk and local speakers. It must be charged with aether by a mage; Eryk practices charging it himself. (Chapters 2–3)
  • The translation device uses a multi-layer spell construct. (Chapter 25)
