Maveith

Maveith is a goliath companion whose strength and fieldcraft make him a valued guide, huntsman, porter, and scout for Castile’s company. He is not a Legion enlistment: Adrian explains that Maveith can be recorded as a huntsman, guide, or porter, but cannot become a legionnaire. His warmth and appetite keep him connected to company life, while he faces prejudice without allowing it to dictate his loyalty to people who treat him as a companion. (Chapters 117, 149, 200, 331–343)

Biography

From outsider to trusted company companion

Maveith has lived apart from most goliaths for years, relying on an old writ that lets him hunt and trade in the Sobral woodlands. He approaches Eryk cautiously, carrying a deer and ready to show the parchment that authorizes his presence. Their meeting reveals both his independence and his wariness: a former baron had demanded half his harvest and barred him from trading with townspeople, so Maveith prefers to keep his distance from authority. He agrees to meet the new Duchess only when Eryk offers to introduce him, and he brings the deer as a peace offering. (Chapter 85)

Maveith travels and works with the Legion at a time when goliaths are treated with suspicion or fear by many humans. The company’s everyday acceptance matters to him: Mateo invites him to play checkers, soldiers share meals with him, and the group defends him when a tavern owner refuses service because he is a goliath. Adrian publicly disciplines the soldiers after the brawl but privately rewards their defense of Maveith, reinforcing that the company will not leave him to face hostility alone. Maveith responds by continuing to contribute to the group through hunting, cooking, scouting, and combat. (Chapter 200)

Adrian makes clear that Maveith is a guide, huntsman, or porter rather than an enlisted legionnaire. The company’s headcounts likewise distinguish him from Legion soldiers, even as he shares their dangers and earns their trust. He continues hunting, scouting, and taking on company work, so the distinction is administrative rather than social. (Chapters 117, 149, 200)

His friendship with Eryk is especially important. Maveith accepts useful gifts from him, including a ring of sustenance, and thinks of Eryk with affection even when they are separated. The ring reduces his need for sleep but also suppresses his appetite, a real cost for someone who enjoys food. Rather than treat the gift as uncomplicated, he weighs its tradeoff and continues using it because the extra waking time makes him useful on hunts and watches. (Chapter 200)

His thoughts about Eryk and Raelia show how closely he watches the relationships around him. Though separated from Raelia during the company’s travels, he wonders whether she made it safely to her people and hopes she will reconnect with Eryk. His care for them is expressed through practical concern and quiet hopes rather than a direct attempt to manage their choices. (Chapter 200)

A protector and provider on the road

After Eryk’s separation from the company, Maveith keeps serving as a reliable scout and fighter under Konstantin’s direction. He hunts game and carries heavy kills back to camp, then helps distribute food to struggling villages. His labor has a purpose beyond the company’s needs: the party is crossing a region where prices have risen and winter is beginning, so he helps provide meat to people who need it. (Chapter 200)

When the company travels to test young people for magical aptitude, Maveith sees how recruitment affects families. He watches the magistrate announce that selected youths will be taken to the capital and notices the villagers’ relief and pity. Although he stands behind the official as a show of military authority, he is uncomfortable with the role and stops listening to the speech. (Chapter 200)

Maveith continues to take responsibility for the company’s security. He scouts the road, warns farmers about a baron seizing their carts, and joins Konstantin when local residents need help with goblins. These choices make him a protector in practice, even while his appearance can make the people he wants to protect uneasy. He is more comfortable acting through assistance than through the authority of the officer he accompanies. (Chapter 200)

Homecoming and reunion

Eryk and his companions help locate and free goliaths held by the Caliphate, including Maveith’s sister Zorana. Mynasha’s edict makes their liberation possible, and the homecoming finally reunites Maveith with Zorana and their father. Maveith is honored by the community but remains uneasy about the acclaim. His guilt over fleeing years earlier and not knowing that his sister had survived enslavement makes it difficult for him to accept praise. When his father returns, Maveith apologizes for failing to protect Zorana and says he does not deserve the title; his father’s embrace allows him to accept that family ties survive his past choices. (Chapters 302, 318, 324–325)

In the later expedition, Maveith returns to Eryk’s side as a seasoned companion. He contributes through physical strength, hunting, and close combat, while also showing patience with the party’s uncertainty about the dungeon. He supports Eryk’s effort to build a home and treats that prospect as a sign that their friendship has moved beyond campaigning together. When the party descends into the chasm and explores the dungeon, Maveith helps assess threats and protect the others. (Chapters 331–343)

Maveith’s actions in the final chapters show the practical value of his combination of speed, strength, and combat experience. During the fight with a manticore, he charges in with his maul after the creature is distracted, breaks its spine, and continues despite taking a tail strike to the chest. The Sentinel Helm’s manifested armor helps defend him, but the fight still leaves him wounded and needing time to recover his aether. (Chapters 342–343)

The group’s discoveries also give Maveith a chance to contribute knowledge from his own culture. He explains that the thermal stone is a goliath-crafted fire starter whose heat depends on the aether channeled into it, turning a dungeon find into a useful cooking tool. This exchange makes his expertise part of the party’s problem-solving, not just his physical strength. (Chapters 147–148, 331–343)

Appearance and personality

Maveith is a goliath whose large frame and imposing appearance can make people wary before they know him. That intimidating silhouette contrasts with his patient, sociable habits: he enjoys cooking, hunting, eating, and games with his companions. He is observant about the treatment of goliaths and sensitive to being regarded as a spectacle or threat, yet he remains generous and dependable within the company. (Chapters 15, 200, 331–343)

Magic and abilities

Maveith relies on his goliath physique, training, weapons, and equipment rather than a documented personal spellcasting discipline. His combat style combines heavy close-range attacks with scouting and hunting skills. His physical development is measured through attributes that can change with recovery and essences. (Chapters 147–153, 149)

Strength, speed, and combat

Maveith’s size gives him the strength to carry large game and use a heavy hammer effectively, but his ability is not limited to brute force. Konstantin describes him as much faster than a man of his size should be, and Maveith attributes part of that improvement to training after consuming essences. In battle he can close distance quickly, strike with enough force to disable large opponents, and continue acting under injury. Against the manticore, he uses the opening created by Eryk and Raelia to bring his maul into the beast’s flank and shatter its spine. (Chapters 200, 343)

His other demonstrated field skills include tracking, hunting, skinning, and moving quietly with a bow. He has the stamina and strength to carry heavy carcasses back to camp and the experience to operate as a scout without drawing attention. His hunting also serves a social purpose: the company uses the meat to help villages facing higher food prices and winter scarcity. (Chapter 200)

Sentinel Helm

The Sentinel Helm can manifest protective armor when its wearer channels aether through it. Maveith tests the effect and admires the armor, but the manifestation lasts only while he has aether; once his supply runs out, the armor disappears and the helm remains. He uses the protection during the manticore encounter, where it supplements rather than replaces his ability to fight and withstand injury. (Chapters 342–343)
