Brutus

Brutus is one of Eryk’s earliest company companions. He is a practical soldier who helps keep the group together through dangerous expeditions, military assignments, and the upheaval surrounding Castile’s company. (Chapters 32–35, 40–61)

Biography

Company companion

Brutus becomes part of Eryk’s company after the storm-giant expedition. He helps the group assess a dangerous situation, supports Eryk as he learns company routines, and shares the ordinary work of travel and camp life. He treats Eryk as a fellow soldier while still correcting his assumptions about how the Empire and the Legion operate. (Chapters 32–35, 40–44)

During the fighting around the city, Brutus serves at the barricades and moves with the company through the siege. He watches the approaches, helps hold positions, and gives Eryk practical advice when their duties put them in danger. His steadiness gives Eryk a familiar point of reference while the company is under pressure. (Chapters 46, 52–61)

Losses and continued service

Brutus survives the later expedition that kills several company members. He remains with the surviving soldiers, helps Eryk understand the cost of those losses, and continues to serve when the company is reassigned. In later conversations he speaks frankly about the dangers and political loyalties around the Legion, but the local narrative does not establish a separate command or magical career for him. (Chapters 115, 122, 200)

Appearance and personality

The chapters identify Brutus as a sturdy legionnaire and give him a direct, practical manner. He is willing to joke with fellow soldiers, but his comments often carry hard-earned caution about the Empire, military service, and the people who wield power. (Chapters 33, 43–44, 74–75)

Magic and abilities

Brutus is a trained Legion soldier who takes part in armed patrols and defensive actions. The text does not establish a personal spell form or affinity for him. (Chapters 46, 52–58)
