Castile Duval

Castile Duval is a forceful mage commander whose willingness to take dangerous assignments has earned both a loyal company and powerful enemies. She treats leadership as responsibility for her people, even when the Empire’s politics punish her for losses she could not prevent. (Chapters 7, 21, 63–69, 243, 324–343)

Biography

Building a loyal company

Castile commands a Legion company known for taking difficult missions. Before Eryk joins, she has already earned a reputation for getting difficult work done, but the company also bears the cost of that work: veterans have watched recruits die or suffer severe injuries. Firth, who joined her company several years after her appointment, says she has done right by the soldiers who remain. Her practice of allowing soldiers to use their preferred weapons reflects the same priority; she wants the unit effective rather than merely uniform. (Chapters 7, 10, 21)

Castile is initially a distant authority to Eryk, and she makes clear that his survival depends on useful discipline. During the spider encounter, she chooses him as the decoy because his role and skill make him the least experienced fighter, while promising that the others will rescue him if he is caught. Her calm presentation of the danger unsettles him, but it also shows her readiness to make a tactical decision when hesitation could expose the entire company. (Chapter 15)

As Eryk proves himself, Castile trusts him with duties that make his spatial ability valuable to the company. She puts him near the unit, assigns him responsibility for equipment and potions, and later teaches him aether exercises. Her mentorship does not remove the risk of military service, but it gives Eryk a place in a functioning team and a path to develop abilities that his initial assessment had made seem impractical. (Chapters 7, 13, 68–72)

The fall of Macha and political judgment

During the war at Macha, Castile’s company faces a siege and a deteriorating military situation. Her decisions are shaped by a chain of failures and political interests outside her command, yet she becomes the subject of a Ducal Tribunal after the city falls. Konstantin prepares the company to testify truthfully and focus on the circumstances: Mage Durandus is dead, the Displacement Mage was assassinated before the Bartiradian attack, and the army surrendered after the lower city fell. The testimony centers on the limits Castile faced, not a claim that she controlled every outcome. (Chapters 21, 44–63)

Castile loses the Tribunal and the ruling strips away much of the support that made her company effective. She tells Eryk that she cannot replenish the company above its minimum for ten years, loses the annual service payout, has her accounts seized, and can no longer buy potions at the discounted mage-company rate. She understands this as more than a personal penalty: it threatens the loyal network of capable soldiers she has built and leaves her dependent on a new patron. (Chapters 65–69)

Rather than surrender her judgment to the Tribunal’s result, Castile continues trying to keep her people together. She remains alert to the agendas of the First Citizens and accepts help when it gives the company a chance to survive, while resisting being reduced to a political instrument. Her relationship with Eryk deepens in this period as she explains the practical consequences of the ruling and asks what he wants to do, allowing him to choose whether to stay with her company. (Chapters 68–73)

The Labyrinth and the cost of command

In the Elven ruins and the Shimmering Labyrinth, Castile directs the company through a prolonged, dangerous expedition. She coordinates searches and recovery efforts, looks for separated soldiers, and uses the Kettle of Souls to deal with specters. The work requires her to balance exploration against the risk of losing more people, and she can be both decisive and visibly relieved when missing soldiers return. (Chapters 76–90, 141–180)

Castile’s company is eventually split by the Labyrinth’s dangers. She keeps the soldiers who escape together and leads them toward a route back to the Empire, while Eryk and Maveith make a separate journey after losing contact. When the company is reunited at the river, her relief is visible; she had sent teams to find Eryk. The reunion restores the company’s cohesion, but it does not erase the physical and political costs of the expedition. (Chapters 175–183)

Later, Castile’s continued service places her in the middle of another imperial power struggle. After the Emperor’s death, she follows Zyna’s lead during a dangerous campaign, despite recognizing that the decision may be fatal. She then overextends herself while trying to prevent enemies from escaping, burning her aether channels. The injury leaves her unable to use magic normally and turns her company’s effort toward finding a way to restore her. (Chapters 243, 267, 299–302, 324)

Recovery through the company’s efforts

Castile’s injury becomes a shared goal for the people who have relied on her. Eryk learns that apex channeling essences may help repair her burned channels, and he begins gathering them with Maveith and their companions. The work is dangerous and uncertain: creatures do not always yield channeling essences, and even a successful harvest may not produce the required apex grade. (Chapters 321–324)

While Castile recovers from her injury, Eryk and Konstantin organize the hunt around her need, and the party weighs whether to reserve rare essences for her treatment. The expedition has collected twelve apex essences and twelve major channeling essences by Chapter 343; the group believes this may be enough, but her recovery has not yet occurred. (Chapters 321, 343)

Her injury changes the company’s usual dynamic. Castile had been the commander who made decisions and defended the group’s interests; now the people she trained and led have to act without her direct presence. Their determination to help her shows how much loyalty her command has earned, while the uncertain treatment means her future magical capacity remains unresolved. (Chapters 299–302, 321–343)

Appearance and personality

Castile is a disciplined, authoritative mage commander. She is direct in speech and often controlled in dangerous situations, but her steadiness should not be mistaken for indifference: she watches over her company, seeks separated soldiers, and is relieved when they return. She also understands political incentives and rarely assumes that an official ruling or promise is free of hidden costs. (Chapters 15, 35, 68, 145, 180)

Magic and abilities

Castile is a powerful mage whose work combines spellcraft, tactical judgment, and a commander’s familiarity with battlefield conditions. She can perceive information through specialized magic, restrain opponents with shadow chains, and unweave enemy spells. Her abilities depend on her aether channels, which are currently burned. (Chapters 243, 267, 284, 324)

Spellcraft and battlefield magic

Castile uses a range of spell forms rather than relying on a single attack. Her all-seeing-eye spell provides a means of magical observation, while shadow chains can restrain a dangerous target even when she is maintaining another task. In battle, she can unweave enemy spells, a capability considered rare and important enough that she is singled out as the only mage in the battalion able to do it. (Chapters 35, 157, 243, 284)

She also uses her magic in support of the company, including working with aether and spell forms to manage threats posed by specters and other dungeon creatures. Her role requires her to conserve resources and make tactical choices about when her magic is worth the cost. The burning of her aether channels has sharply limited her access; the collected channeling essences are intended to restore that capacity, but have not yet done so. (Chapters 141–180, 267, 321–343)

Command and tactical judgment

Castile’s military effectiveness is not reducible to spell output. She chooses formations and assigns dangerous tasks according to the situation, coordinates with Adrian and Delmar, and adapts when plans fail. Her unit’s survival depends on the combination of her magic and her willingness to delegate to experienced soldiers. (Chapters 15, 35, 44, 54–57)
