Sunny
Sunny, born Sunless, is a survivor from the outskirts of NQSC who grows from an untrained Sleeper into a Supreme ruler of shadows. His pursuit of freedom drives much of his story: first from poverty and the Nightmare Spell, then from the supernatural bond that makes his True Name a means of enslavement, and finally from fate itself. The freedom he wins erases him from other people's memories, forcing him to rebuild his closest relationships while preparing humanity for threats beyond the old Sovereigns. (Chapters 1, 15, 1589, and 2247)
Biography
A Slave Who Refused to Die
At sixteen, Sunny was an underfed orphan from the outskirts who had spent his childhood finding food rather than attending school. His parents were dead, his younger sister Rain had been taken into another family, and infection by the Nightmare Spell seemed like a death sentence because he possessed neither training nor inherited equipment. He nevertheless surrendered himself to the authorities before falling asleep, facing the trial with the fatalistic belief that survival would at least let him spite the world that expected him to die. (Chapters 1–4)
The First Nightmare placed him in the body of a sickly temple slave within a doomed caravan. Sunny survived through suspicion and planning rather than strength: he secretly poisoned Shifty, Scholar, and Hero when he concluded that every one of them might turn on him, endured Hero's attempted execution, and used a silver bell to draw the blind Mountain King toward the ruined temple. These choices were ruthless, but they were also his rejection of the obedient role assigned to him by both the Nightmare and its human actors. (Chapters 4–14)
Cornered at the temple altar, Sunny offered himself to the forgotten deity almost without understanding what he was doing. Shadow God's response destroyed the Mountain King, and the Spell judged Sunny's impossible victory “glorious,” granting him the True Name Lost from Light and the Divine Aspect Shadow Slave. The reward also reproduced the trial's central danger in permanent form: anyone who learned and spoke his True Name could become his master. His first victory therefore remade his body and awakened a unique Shadow Core while turning secrecy and personal freedom into lifelong necessities. (Chapters 14–17)
Trust and Betrayal on the Forgotten Shore
On the Forgotten Shore, Sunny initially concealed both his Aspect and his inability to lie while traveling with Nephis and Cassie. The Soul Devouring Tree nearly trapped all three in contented oblivion, but pain and Blood Weave helped Sunny resist its influence. Unable to explain the danger directly while the others remained enthralled, he manipulated them into constructing an escape boat, then saved Cassie during the flight. The episode established the paradox that defined his early relationships: he cared enough to protect his companions, yet relied on deception because honest vulnerability could literally enslave him. (Chapters 79–95)
After a rupture with Nephis at the Bright Castle, Sunny lived alone in the Dark City ruins for months and became an accomplished hunter, but the isolation left him dangerously close to losing himself. He transformed the Stone Saint's Echo into his first true Shadow, learned the first steps of Shadow Dance by studying other beings, and found Weaver's Mask, whose concealment supported the masked identity later known as Mongrel. Returning to the cohort required him to choose connection despite distrust rather than pretending solitude was enough. (Chapters 96–109, 217–219, and 277–280)
Sunny became a scout, infiltrator, and fighter in Nephis's campaign against Gunlaug, but he never accepted her willingness to spend lives as casually as the Bright Lord had. During the assault on the Crimson Spire, he fought through the collapsing stronghold and confronted Caster, whose mission was to kill Nephis before she could escape. By then Sunny's loyalty was no longer a temporary bargain: he risked himself to preserve the cohort and ensure that the survivors reached the Gateway, even while remaining wary of Nephis's growing power over others. (Chapters 250–340)
At the Gateway, Sunny tried to remain behind so Nephis would not be abandoned. Their resulting duel was shaped as much by mutual protection as opposition: he used Shadow Dance to follow her swordsmanship, while she deliberately lost because she intended to strand herself instead. Nephis then spoke Lost from Light—knowledge Cassie had given her—and commanded him through the Gateway. Sunny escaped the Shore and became an Awakened, but the cost was the forced activation of Shadow Bond. Cassie's betrayal and Nephis's command made the freedom he had defended throughout the arc feel stolen by the people he trusted most. (Chapters 340–354)
Masks, Mirrors, and the Second Nightmare
Back in the waking world and the Chained Isles, Sunny pursued strength without revealing how vulnerable his True Name made him. He formed additional Shadow Cores, developed Shadow Step, gained Soul Serpent, and used Mongrel as a public combat identity. When a Mirror Beast copied Shadow Bond, Sunny exploited the copied condition to command it, then killed it rather than keep a living slave. Later, when a Gate opened near Rain's school, he could have fled without exposing Mongrel, but chose to defend the city until help arrived—placing the sister who did not know him above secrecy. (Chapters 351–413 and 483–494)
Mordret turned Sunny's fear of invasion into a literal battle for his soul. When the prince entered his Soul Sea, the silent shadows of the beings Sunny had killed rose against the intruder, revealing that his accumulated violence could also serve as a defense. Sunny escaped with Cassie, then entered the Second Nightmare alongside her, Effie, Kai, and Mordret. Before the trial, he finally disclosed his Flaw, True Name, Divine Aspect, multiple cores, daemon lineage, and Mongrel identity to his friends, choosing informed cooperation over the secrecy that had once protected him. (Chapters 592–600 and 682–688)
The Nightmare cast Sunny as a four-armed shadowspawn enslaved by Solvane. Even deprived of speech and treated as a gladiatorial possession, he refused to internalize obedience, attempted to save Elyas, and endured Solvane's lethal punishment through the Undying Chain's protection. His alliance with Noctis required a different sort of trust: Sunny recognized the immortal sorcerer's feints and helped pursue the plan to free Hope, while still judging each apparent betrayal instead of surrendering his will to loyalty alone. (Chapters 601–620 and 688–707)
Sunny and the cohort also accepted responsibility for people who were not part of their trial. They helped evacuate civilians before the war around Hope's prison, even though protecting refugees complicated their plan and exposed them to greater danger. Sunny confronted Mordret without forgetting their personal debt, but resisted allowing vengeance to decide the entire Nightmare's outcome. When the cohort succeeded, he returned as a Master with Shadow Manifestation and a larger family of Shadows, openly acknowledging that he could retire from danger but choosing to continue because unresolved threats, Nephis, Rain, and his friends still mattered to him. (Chapters 707–750)
Command and Loss in Antarctica
As a new Master, Sunny briefly taught at the Academy and used the pause to repair gaps in his training. Nephis returned from the Dream Realm after two years, and their reunion reopened both their attachment and the question of Shadow Bond. She promised never to command him, but also insisted that she could earn his loyalty; Sunny joined the Antarctic expedition partly to escape that gravitational pull and partly because the campaign promised the growth he needed. Before departing, he sent Soul Serpent to guard Rain secretly, sacrificing access to a major source of power for her safety. (Chapters 751–810)
Promoted into command of the First Irregular Company, Sunny selected soldiers for stamina, adaptability, and mental resilience rather than spectacular but short-lived power. The campaign forced him to become responsible for lives beyond his own cohort. After LO49 and the collapse of a siege city, he chose to escort a massive refugee convoy even though doing so endangered his soldiers; abandoning civilians to improve his own odds, he decided, would make him resemble the Sovereigns whose callousness he despised. That choice turned survival instinct into a demanding form of leadership. (Chapters 821 and 880–906)
Sunny repeatedly survived battles that should have killed him, including the fight with Goliath, and refined Shadow Shell until he could assume a four-armed battle form to protect Falcon Scott. He could not, however, defeat the Winter Beast. Samara, Dorn, Belle, and the rest of his company died while following him, and Sunny survived only by escaping through shadow after failing to reach the creature. Their deaths broke any comforting belief that preparation and resolve guaranteed salvation; the commander who had once measured success by staying alive emerged burdened by the fact that he alone had done so. (Chapters 955, 974–975, and 1037–1060)
Sunny crossed the sea with Jet and continued fighting in East Antarctica rather than withdrawing into grief. Reuniting with Effie, Kai, and Cassie made the change in him visible, while the conflict among the Great Clans convinced him that humanity's rulers would sacrifice the evacuation for their own contest. After the Battle of the Black Skull and the disastrous convergence of Nightmare Gates, Sunny joined Nephis, Cassie, Effie, Kai, Jet, and Mordret in challenging the immense Seed in the desert. The Third Nightmare became both an escape from the clan war and an attempt to gain enough power to protect others more successfully. (Chapters 1061–1071 and 1180–1230)
The Great River and the Price of Freedom
The Third Nightmare stranded Sunny on the Great River, where time flowed from future to past and the apparition of the Sin of Solace grew increasingly independent. Exhausted by Antarctica, he defined his aims with unusual clarity: survive, Transcend, protect the people he loved, and become master of his own fate. Traveling with Ananke deepened his knowledge of Weaver and let him develop sorcery learned by studying the Spell itself, while her reverse aging made the River's cruelty intimate rather than merely theoretical. (Chapters 1231–1236 and 1250–1320)
The Nightmare proved to be a cycle shaped by corrupted versions of the cohort. Sunny learned that the Mad Prince was his own future, Defiled self and had created the Estuary Key as part of a design spanning repeated loops. On Wind Flower, Sunny and his companions died and adapted again and again; he eventually granted Wind Flower the death she requested. These revelations recast his apparent improvisations as remnants of a plan made by another Sunny, forcing him to use that plan without surrendering judgment to a self he could no longer regard as trustworthy. (Chapters 1351–1456)
Near the end of the Nightmare, Sunny abandoned the battle at Verge and traveled to the Estuary despite his promises to the cohort. He copied Nephis's protection against corruption long enough to approach forbidden knowledge, rejected the warning of a future version of himself, and persisted because breaking fate seemed like the only permanent way to end Shadow Bond. The Vile Thieving Bird then stole his fate. Sunny gained Soul Weave and Transcendence, but lost his connection to the Spell, his True Name, and many Memories—an outcome that fulfilled his wish far more completely than he had understood. (Chapters 1564–1588)
Shadow Bond became unusable because a Fateless being could not possess the True Name needed to activate it. The immediate exhilaration of freedom collapsed when Nephis asked who he was: fate's removal had erased the world's memories of Sunny, not merely his chains. Rain also no longer remembered him. He left a shadow to guard her, recovered Soul Serpent, and departed alone, understanding that freedom without the relationships that had defined him was another form of exile. The victory therefore ended his enslavement while confronting him with the cost of treating all bonds as chains. (Chapters 1588–1590)
The Forgotten Saint and the Gathering Storm
Four years later, Sunny had learned to inhabit several lives at once. His original body ran the Brilliant Emporium in Bastion as an apparently harmless Memory purveyor; another avatar watched over Rain; and the masked Lord of Shadows ruled the Nameless Temple in Godgrave with Saint, Serpent, Nightmare, Fiend, and the Marvelous Mimic. This division let him care for people who did not remember him while developing his Aspect outside the Spell, but it also made loneliness into a daily structure rather than a temporary wound. (Chapters 1591–1592)
Nephis approached the Lord of Shadows seeking an ally against the Sovereigns. Sunny tested her in a duel, matched her swordsmanship through Shadow Dance, and accepted an alliance after proving that he could stand beside her as an equal. His secrecy created an asymmetry—he remembered the whole history of their bond while she saw a compelling stranger—yet he chose to help her conspiracy rather than punish her for forgetting what fate had removed. He also killed a Great Beast with a colossal Shadow Shell, establishing the masked Saint as a power the Great Clans could not dismiss. (Chapters 1609–1623)
Cassie independently discovered a “man-shaped hole” in the pattern of the past because her former self had left instructions to find Sunless. Sunny allowed her access to memories no one else possessed, turning an old betrayal into a renewed partnership grounded in consent. Through her, he re-entered the cohort's inner circle while preserving the distinction between Master Sunless and the Lord of Shadows. The arrangement was painful and sometimes absurd, but it gave his friends the opportunity to trust the person he had become instead of merely recovering feelings fate had erased. (Chapters 1635 and 1733–1747)
Sunny's public courtship with Nephis began as part of their cover and became genuine, while his masked identity joined her, Cassie, Effie, Kai, and Jet in the conspiracy to destroy the Sovereigns. He eventually revealed that the gentle shopkeeper and fearsome Lord of Shadows were the same person, allowing Nephis to reconcile the two men who had drawn her attention. On the night Ivory Island departed for war, Nephis admitted doubts she could show no follower; Sunny answered as her partner, and their first kiss marked the choice to face the coming war together rather than as master and slave. (Chapters 1743–1747 and 1838–1840)
The War of Domains and Supremacy
When Anvil launched the war between the Sword and Song Domains, Sunny entered as the Lord of Shadows while privately intending to help Nephis overthrow both rulers. His years in Godgrave made him the coalition's indispensable scout: he mapped hidden Citadels, modeled the dead god's skeleton with manifested shadow, and was ordered to disrupt Song's western advance. He complied enough to preserve his position, but never mistook Anvil's proclaimed cause for justice; he recognized the war as an engineered contest in which ordinary soldiers would pay for the Sovereigns' ambitions. (Chapters 1841–1854)
The ambush at the lake Citadel exposed a direct counter to Sunny's Aspect. Revel drowned the battlefield in true darkness, which blinded his shadow sense and cut him off from his source element. Forced to rely on his Shadows and physical skill, Sunny discovered that he could augment his own companions and gained a deeper understanding of their bodies. The Sword expedition won the Citadel but lost seven Saints, leaving Sunny to share Nephis's burden as a commander while converting a near-defeat into new paths for Shadow Shell, Shadow Dance, and weaving. (Chapters 1886–1905 and 1946)
Sunny later entered the Shadow Realm through the Shadow Lantern, accepting the danger that the realm itself would gradually dissolve his soul. He hunted within it, met Eurys, defeated the ancient shadow known as Slayer through coordinated incarnations, and brought her into his Soul Sea despite her continuing hostility. The expedition expanded his understanding of death, shadows, and his own soul, but it also demonstrated that his curiosity routinely outran caution: he returned with profound knowledge and a formidable new Shadow only by surviving restrictions that removed much of his usual versatility. (Chapters 1953 and 2098–2131)
In the final battle, Sunny and Nephis enacted the conspiracy they had spent years preparing. Sunny needed Supremacy before he could defeat Anvil, so he killed himself with Serpent, sending his shadow into his own Soul Sea rather than the Shadow Realm, and used his Will to return from death. The act manifested the legion of those he had killed as his Domain and made him the Sovereign of Death. He then helped end the old order while Nephis defeated Ki Song, turning the survival trick at the heart of his Aspect into a deliberate act of defiance against an absolute law. (Chapters 2247–2258)
Shattered Legacies and the War for Memory
After victory, Sunny staged the Lord of Shadows' death by Nephis's hand so that she could become the uncontested ruler of the Human Domain, then moved the Nameless Temple to the Forgotten Shore. He viewed their celebrated triumph without self-congratulation: their plan had risked millions of lives, and luck had limited the catastrophe. In secret he founded the Shadow Clan, using veterans, Rain, Aiko, and a mobile Citadel to handle threats the visible government could not. His new sovereignty therefore began in deliberate obscurity, protecting Nephis's legitimacy while giving the officially dead “traitor” a community and responsibility of his own. (Chapters 2261–2273)
Sunny continued seeking a route beyond Supremacy rather than settling into rulership. In Ariel's Game he learned truths about Weaver and the gods, acquired Flesh Weave, and mastered the fifth step of Shadow Dance by becoming a genuine Stone Saint deeply enough to reproduce some of that form's Attributes. He also became increasingly aware that controlling many bodies and perspectives was changing the structure of his mind. Nephis served as an anchor to humanity, just as he tried to anchor her against the emotional erosion caused by her Flaw. (Chapters 2335, 2404, and 2411)
His later expeditions joined discovery to public responsibility. Sunny prepared Kai and Effie for future advancement, wrote an account of the world's hidden history rather than hoarding knowledge like the old Sovereigns, and explored the Night Garden to find Weaver's legacy. In the Eternal City, he used authority over shadows and weaving to reattach Nightwalker's severed shadow, choosing duty, trust, and a possible return to fate over the isolation he had once called freedom. He subsequently absorbed Spirit Weave from Weaver's remnant message, strengthening his Will and adding an affinity to Fate beside its established affinity to Death. The decision reflected a mature distinction: accepting a bond by choice was not the same as being placed in chains. (Chapters 2448, 2562, 2591, 2702–2718)
Asterion returned and attacked humanity through thought, memory, and belief, turning direct force into a threat to the very civilians Sunny and Nephis meant to save. Sunny resisted subtle mental manipulation long enough to rush to Cassie's aid, but the crisis spread while Mordret began conquering cities for his own war. Cassie's surviving clues led Sunny and Nephis to conclude that defeating Asterion required leaving the Human Domain and seeking an answer in the Tomb of Ariel. Sunny wounded Mordret's vessels to slow him, then departed with Nephis despite the political cost of abandoning their Citadels. (Chapters 2720–2754 and 2807–2843)
All seven incarnations reunited in the Nightmare Desert, where Sunny deployed his Shadow Legion beside Nephis against armies of Deathless beings. Guided by the temporarily allied Azarax, he began attempting seven intricate Shadow Shells at once while hurrying toward the Tomb as Nephis's Domain weakened behind them. Sunny also theorized that the completed Shadow Dance might one day reproduce the nature of another being's Will and let him become the antithesis of any power, as Shadow God once could. This remains an ambition rather than demonstrated mastery; at the latest direct appearance, he is a Supreme Titan advancing toward the Tomb under worsening pressure from Asterion and Mordret. (Chapters 2845–2859)
Appearance and personality
Sunny begins as an unhealthily thin, pale youth with dark circles under his eyes, cheap clothing, and short stature shaped by chronic deprivation. Awakening repeatedly removes physical imperfections, and by Transcendence he is described as a slender, beautiful young man with alabaster or porcelain skin, long raven-black hair, and onyx eyes. His slight, refined appearance contrasts with both his physical power and the fearsome armor and masks used by the Lord of Shadows. (Chapters 1, 17, 1591, and 1840)
His defining traits are suspicion, resourcefulness, stubbornness, curiosity, and an irreverent sense of humor. Sunny readily deceives, ambushes, and exploits loopholes, yet his claimed selfishness repeatedly yields to responsibility for Rain, his cohort, soldiers, refugees, and eventually humanity. He resents imposed loyalty and authority, but voluntarily keeps promises and accepts burdens when they are chosen freely. Loss makes him more guarded rather than indifferent, while discovery—whether of sorcery, history, or his own Aspect—can still provoke almost childlike excitement. (Chapters 13, 906, 1059–1071, 1946, and 2715)
Abilities and Aspect
Sunny possesses the Divine Aspect Shadow Slave, a shadow-based progression distinct from ordinary Awakened development. Its versatility joins reconnaissance, movement, construction, transformation, combat, sorcery, and command, but several parts carry unusually personal risks: his former True Name could enslave him, manifesting his own shadows could expose his soul, true darkness suppresses his principal senses and source element, and his many avatars still share one mind, soul, and essence reserve. (Chapters 15–17, 749, 1584, and 1886)
Shadow Cores, augmentation, and progression
Sunny's first Shadow Core formed after the First Nightmare. He strengthens it with shadow fragments rather than the ordinary soul-shard path, and Divine Aspect holders can form multiple cores, increasing both reserves and Class. Each core gives him another personal shadow; those shadows can scout independently, extend his perception, or wrap around Sunny, a Memory, or one of his Shadows to augment it. The augmentation is powerful but divided into discrete shadows, so distributing them trades one concentrated source of strength for several weaker ones. (Chapters 16, 351–354, and 1592)
He progresses from Sleeper to Awakened, Master, Transcendent Terror, and finally Supreme Titan with seven cores. Transcendence evolves his governing Attribute into Lord of Shadows, extending control and shadow sense beyond forty kilometers, allowing indefinite incorporeal shadow form, and greatly strengthening all Aspect abilities. Supremacy does not arrive through the Spell: Sunny deliberately dies by his own weapon, preserves his shadow inside his Soul Sea, returns through Will, and manifests the silent shadows of his victims as a Domain. By the Nightmare Desert campaign, that Shadow Legion can be fielded as an organized army. Its shades cannot normally be destroyed permanently, but vanquished shades return to his Soul Sea and require time to repair, temporarily reducing the force he can field. (Chapters 744–749, 1592, 2247, 2285, 2702–2859)
Shadow Control, Shadow Step, and Shadow Manifestation
Shadow Control begins with command of Sunny's unusually independent shadow and later expands into authority over wild shadows. He can reshape them, move them, sense through them, hide within them, and use them for surveillance over enormous areas. Living shadows remain loyal to the beings who cast them and cannot simply be forced to betray their owners; ancient, deep, or distant shadows also demand greater concentration. True elemental darkness is a direct counter because it suppresses shadows, blinds his shadow sense, and separates him from the environmental element that sustains many of these techniques. (Chapters 16, 749, 1592, and 1886)
Shadow Step lets Sunny enter one shadow and emerge from another, providing stealth, escape, and long-distance movement within his range. It can carry equipment and, under established connections, has worked through the shadow of another person such as Nephis. The ability becomes dramatically broader after Transcendence, but usable shadows and perception still matter; forcing himself across a realm boundary as a Supreme is possible only with substantial resistance and strain. His incorporeal form is difficult to harm through ordinary physical means, though powers that attack shadows, souls, darkness, or the governing Will can threaten it. (Chapters 358–359, 1229, 1592, and 2751)
Shadow Manifestation turns controlled shadows into tangible matter sustained by essence. Sunny can create blades, armor, barriers, bridges, ropes, tendrils, models, wings, and complex structures; manifested material can be tuned for rigidity, elasticity, density, viscosity, and surface qualities. Complexity, condensation, distance, force, and the depth of the shadow all raise the cost. His own shadows are easier to manifest but can then be physically damaged, endangering the soul-connected helpers themselves. Shadow Lantern offsets the environmental limitation by carrying a vast supply of shadows, while later mastery supports colossal bodies and fine sorcerous work. (Chapters 749, 1946, and 2404)
Shadow Incarnation and Shadow Shell
Shadow Incarnation allows Sunny's personal shadows to become exact avatars of him. Each has the same body and Attributes and can independently use Shadow Control, Shadow Step, Shadow Manifestation, summon his Shadows and Memories, weave, or construct a Shell. They remain one person rather than separate minds: direct control of many bodies taxes a single consciousness, and all share one soul and essence pool. Soul Weave and Transcendent essence let him sustain some incarnations indefinitely, while full simultaneous use is more costly; equipment does not automatically multiply, and an avatar's loss still returns the associated shadow to danger. (Chapter 1584)
Shadow Shell combines Manifestation with Shadow Dance to build a body modeled on another creature. Early Shells reproduce functional anatomy and movement through a mix of studied structure, improvised shadow matter, and essence, but do not automatically copy an original's Aspect, Attributes, or mystical powers. Sunny used a four-armed shell to fight in Falcon Scott and later refined giant colossi, Stone Saint forms, wings, and many other bodies. The fifth step of Shadow Dance lets him reproduce some Attributes of a deeply understood form, demonstrated with Saint; copying arbitrary abilities or another being's Will remains a future possibility, not a current universal power. (Chapters 974–975, 1037, 1946, 2404, and 2857–2859)
Shadow Dance and Soul Serpent
Sunny derives Shadow Dance from a vision of a slave's mother moving with seven shadows. Its first steps read the rhythm, intent, and essence of an opponent so he can mirror their combat style; he first crystallizes the technique through Nephis's swordsmanship. Later steps deepen the imitation from skill to overall form, then to a Shell's physical nature and selected Attributes. The technique makes Sunny exceptionally adaptable and lets him learn within a fight, but losing himself in a copied identity is a persistent danger—one formerly stabilized by the True Name he no longer possesses. (Chapters 217–219, 340–350, 1946, and 2404)
Each completed stage once yielded an Aspect Legacy relic, most importantly Soul Serpent. Serpent's Rank follows Sunny's Shadow Dance mastery and its Class follows his own. It can act as a companion, become a weapon with a slaying quality that suppresses part of an enemy's resistance, or assume forms among the shadows recorded in Sunny's Soul Sea. Sunny has also transferred its Mark to Rain for protection. Serpent interacts especially well with his death-aligned Will, but sending it away deprives Sunny of one of his strongest weapons and most flexible Shadows. (Chapters 359, 773–810, 1946, and 2247)
Weaver's lineage and sorcery
Sunny acquires fragments of Weaver's forbidden lineage rather than inheriting one complete gift. Blood Weave begins after he consumes Weaver's ichor and grants supernatural blood tenacity along with sight capable of perceiving essence strings. Bone Weave reinforces his skeleton and gives fingers capable of manipulating those strings; Soul Weave strengthens his soul and greatly expands what his avatars can sustain; Flesh Weave rebuilds muscles, tendons, organs, vitality, and healing while integrating the bodily fragments. Later Mind Weave lets him withstand and narrow overwhelming perception. Spirit Weave strengthens his Will, makes reality more responsive to it, and adds an affinity to Fate beside his affinity to Death; Shadow Weave remains unclaimed in the supplied corpus. These upgrades are powerful but often arrive through extreme pain and do not make him invulnerable. (Chapters 79–95, 451, 1580–1584, 2411, 2591, 2718, 2846)
By observing the Nightmare Spell, Sunny learns to weave Memories from essence and later from shadow strings. He can inspect enchantments, repair or alter existing patterns, craft original Memories, create a substitute interface for some lost Spell functions, and forge soul- or shadow-bound artifacts. Complex weaving requires exact knowledge, materials or suitable vessels, sustained concentration, and great essence; failure can collapse a pattern, while working across several bodies increases mental strain. His most demanding demonstrations include reforging Nephis's Dream Blade simultaneously in reality and dream, and sewing Nightwalker's severed shadow back to him through force of Will. (Chapters 1320, 1592, 2055, and 2702–2715)
The lineage ultimately lets him perceive and touch Strings of Fate under tightly controlled conditions, but this is neither safe nor comprehensive command over fate. Looking at the full tapestry nearly overwhelms him even after Mind Weave, and he must restrict his perception to a tiny subset before interacting with a single golden string. His later ability to preserve dangerous knowledge and publish a filtered account likewise reflects disciplined use of understanding, not omniscience. At the latest point, reclaiming his own stolen fate remains a chosen future objective rather than an accomplished ability. (Chapters 2562, 2591, and 2715)
Shadows, death, and Supreme Will
Sunny can transform certain Echoes or compatible beings into Shadows, soul-bound companions that grow through mechanisms specific to each of them. His principal retinue includes Saint, Soul Serpent, Nightmare, Fiend, the Marvelous Mimic, and Slayer. They are not interchangeable equipment: each has its own capabilities, temperament, advancement requirements, and vulnerabilities. Sunny can augment or incarnate through them, study their structures to improve Shells, and coordinate them across avatars; after losing the Spell, he must discover their natural growth methods instead of feeding them through its interface. (Chapters 104–109, 652–655, 1592, and 1946–2131)
As a Supreme, Sunny's Will initially bears the quality of death; Spirit Weave later adds an affinity to Fate without replacing that death-aligned nature. His Domain consists of shades of beings slain by him and, after its manifestation, by his Shadow forces, which remain in his Soul Sea rather than passing to the Shadow Realm. He can summon that legion and impose his authority on shadows, but conceptually powerful enemies can resist or bypass ordinary destruction, while vanquished shades need time to recover before returning to battle. His self-resurrection was possible because he killed himself and redirected his own shadow into his soul; it is a specific feat of preparation and Will, not proof that every death is reversible. Encounters with the Deathless and Sacred shades continue to test the limits of that authority. (Chapters 2247, 2285, 2702, 2718, 2845–2859)
Flaw, Fatelessness, and combat skill
Sunny's Flaw, Clear Conscience, prevents him from lying and can force an answer when he is directly pressed, though he becomes adept at omission, misdirection, technically truthful phrasing, and silence. Weaver's Mask reverses the Flaw through Simple Trick: while wearing it he can lie, but cannot tell the truth. The mask also conceals identity and supernatural scrutiny, yet mundane mannerisms and context can still reveal him. Extraordinary Rock can replay prepared speech, helping him communicate behind the mask without accidentally violating its reversed condition. (Chapters 17, 277–280, and 1854)
Fatelessness removes Sunny from the tapestry, breaks his connection to the Spell, erases others' memories of him, and prevents him from possessing a True Name. Shadow Bond still exists in his Aspect, but without a True Name its activation condition cannot be met, leaving no master able to command him. The same state costs him the Spell's appraisal, reward, and Memory systems and makes his past hard for others to retain. It also deprives Shadow Dance of the identity anchor his old True Name provided, increasing his caution around deeper imitation. (Chapters 1588–1592 and 2335)
Apart from supernatural power, Sunny is an elite swordsman, ambusher, scout, survivalist, and battlefield commander. He studies anatomy, material properties, runic languages, history, and practical engineering because his Shells and sorcery depend on knowledge rather than intent alone. Multiple bodies let him coordinate as a formation with perfect timing, but experience does not eliminate tactical counters or moral costs: true darkness, mental influence, overwhelming Will, protection duties, and concern for allies have all constrained his choices. His latest fighting style integrates weapons, avatars, Shadows, legion tactics, Shells, sorcery, and death-aligned Will rather than relying on one decisive technique. (Chapters 821, 1037, 1946, 2121, 2751, and 2859)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |

Relationships
- Nephis: Sunny's closest partner, rival, and lover. Their bond develops from wary cooperation to devotion, is poisoned by involuntary Shadow Bond, erased from her memory by Fatelessness, and rebuilt by choice until they become co-conspirators and fellow Supremes. (Chapters 79–95, 340–350, 1588–1590, 1840, and 2247–2258)
- Cassie: Cassie's disclosure of Sunny's True Name enables his enslavement and causes a lasting rupture. She later helps him through multiple Nightmares, discovers the gap left by his erasure, and becomes a confidant who can inspect selected memories while reasoning around the history that Fatelessness prevents her from retaining directly. (Chapters 340–350, 592–600, 1351–1456, and 1635–1648)
- Rain: Rain is Sunny's younger sister, although separation in childhood and later Fatelessness keep her from remembering him as family. He watches over her, lends her Soul Serpent, teaches her through an avatar, and builds the Shadow Clan partly as a home and shield around her future. (Chapters 1, 483–494, 773–810, 1590–1592, and 2273)
- Effie and Kai: They become Sunny's trusted cohort mates through the Forgotten Shore and Second Nightmare. Their humor and loyalty reconnect him to ordinary companionship, while his later efforts to prepare them for Supremacy show that he sees their survival as essential to humanity's future, not merely his own plans. (Chapters 250–350, 600–744, and 2448–2562)
- Jet: Jet greets Sunny after his First Nightmare and becomes a pragmatic mentor, commander, and peer. They share the government's Antarctic burden, survive the sea crossing after Falcon Scott, and later cooperate as members of Nephis's conspiracy and as unusually death-aligned champions. (Chapters 17, 1061–1071, 1743, and 2583)
- Mordret: Mordret is a recurring enemy and reluctant ally whose invasions of souls and bodies mirror Sunny's own multiplicity while violating the autonomy Sunny values. They cooperate when survival requires it, but Sunny repeatedly opposes his willingness to turn people into vessels or sacrifice cities, most recently slowing his conquest before leaving to confront Asterion's threat. (Chapters 592–600, 735, 1229–1230, and 2807–2808)
Items
- Weaver's Mask: Divine mask that conceals Sunny's identity, reverses his Flaw, and later supports the Lord of Shadows persona. (Chapters 278–280, 1840)
- Soul Serpent: Aspect Legacy relic and Shadow that serves as companion, weapon, transformer, and, for a time, Rain's guardian before returning to Sunny. (Chapters 358–359, 773–810, 1590–1592, 2247)
- Shadow Lantern: Stores a vast reserve of shadows and opens a gate into the Shadow Realm. (Chapters 653–655, 1953, 2098–2131)
- Covetous Coffer: Dimensional storage Memory later transformed into the Marvelous Mimic, Sunny's mobile home and Shadow. (Chapters 428, 1592)
- Cruel Sight: Versatile weapon Memory used in Sunny's earlier campaigns and lost with the Spell-awarded Memories destroyed after his fate was stolen. (Chapters 415, 1582)
- Midnight Shard: Early sword Memory used during the Forgotten Shore campaign and likewise lost after Sunny became Fateless. (Chapters 74, 1582)
- Mantle of the Underworld: Armor converted from a Memory into the soulbound Attribute that later evolves into Sunny's Onyx and Jade Shell. (Chapters 310, 972–976, 1592, 2253)
- Sin of Solace: Powerful jade sword whose increasingly autonomous apparition torments and advises Sunny in the Third Nightmare. Sunny destroys the Memory in the Estuary and then eliminates the apparition separately. (Chapters 869, 1231–1236, 1534, 1576)
- Chain Breaker: Flying ship used by the cohort on the Chained Isles, Great River, and latest voyage toward the Tomb of Ariel. (Chapters 599–600, 1230–1231, 2845)
- Endless Spring: Water-producing Memory retained among Sunny's practical supplies after he becomes Fateless. (Chapters 104, 1582, 2854)
- Extraordinary Rock: Talking and recording Memory used for misdirection, communication, and prepared speech while masked. (Chapters 695, 1592, 1854)
