Caster
Caster is a Legacy Sleeper of the Han Li clan and one of the strongest members of his Academy cohort. His Ascended Aspect grants extreme speed at the cost of rapidly consuming his lifespan. Sent by the Sovereigns to kill Nephis, he joins her Forgotten Shore cohort, cultivates trust, and waits for a chance to complete his mission before Sunny exposes the cost of his power and kills him.
Biography
Academy prodigy
Caster enters the Academy with an “excellent” First Nightmare appraisal and an Ascended Aspect, results exceptional enough that other Sleepers defend him when Sunny mocks them. As a Legacy trained from childhood, he combines inherited preparation with polished manners and formidable martial skill. He places second in the Academy ranking behind Nephis, strikes the strength machine too quickly for Sunny's ordinary sight, and becomes the only trainee to defeat Nephis in their spar. (Chapters 21, 24, and 26–27)
The spar exposes both his advantage and its limits. Caster moves at least ten times faster than Nephis, circling beyond normal perception, but her anticipation nearly catches him despite that gap. He avoids the counterattack by a hair, wins cleanly, and prevents her fall from becoming painful. His courtesy preserves the image of an honorable peer, while his private trembling before entering the Dream Realm hints that the confident prodigy is carrying fears and obligations the other Sleepers do not understand. (Chapters 27, 29, and 70)
Independent hunter at the Bright Castle
Caster reaches the Bright Castle separately and maintains nominal independence from Gunlaug. His speed helps him escape Nightmare Creatures more reliably than it helps him kill them, while ancestral Memories let him pay for safety by selling equipment and soul shards. His reputation is already strong enough to deter Guards. When Sunny and Cassie arrive, Caster defuses a confrontation and presents himself as a friendly Academy acquaintance rather than a rival. (Chapters 137–141)
After Nephis challenges the Castle's order, Caster volunteers for her hunting party. His speed and Legacy training make him the cohort's principal executioner when Nephis exposes a monster's weakness, and their compatible education produces efficient teamwork. He earns public admiration beside Nephis and Effie, but his complex reaction to Nephis's identity and his habit of remaining near her acquire a darker meaning once his assassination mission is revealed. (Chapters 154–158 and 207–214)
Leverage over Sunny
Caster discovers Sunny standing over Harper's body after Sunny kills the informant to protect the secret of Nephis's lineage. He helps clean the scene, bribes observers, and arranges a safe hour to remove the corpse. Sunny reads the offer as calculated leverage rather than simple kindness: Caster repeatedly emphasizes the expense and now possesses a secret he can use to control a cohort member who distrusts him. (Chapters 162–164)
Sunny refuses to remain within that pressure and leaves the Castle for months. When he returns, Caster greets him amiably but with concealed hostility, watches his renewed closeness to Nephis, and continues hiding his own objective. Caster correctly deduces that Sunny masks his strength and misunderstands Sunny's Flaw as a compulsion to lie; the insight is sharp enough to be dangerous but incomplete enough to fail when the two finally confront each other. (Chapters 168, 175–178, and 338)
Expedition and civil war
Caster contributes throughout the expedition beyond the Dark City. He fights the Lord of the Dead's awakening body, protects the party from flying abominations, maps the route for their return, and repeatedly uses bursts of speed to exploit openings created by the others. The long campaign also gives Sunny evidence of a crystal hourglass charm and Caster's subtly increasing apparent age, clues that reveal the exchange underlying his Aspect. (Chapters 188–202, 222–236, 231, and 258–280)
When Gunlaug dies and the Bright Castle descends into civil war, Caster immediately rushes toward the briefly vulnerable Nephis. Sunny trips him with the Prowling Thorn before the attempt succeeds. Caster remains with the army afterward and participates in the assault on the Crimson Spire, preserving his cover and waiting until escape is within reach before pursuing Nephis away from the Gateway. (Chapters 297–301 and 313–336)
Failed assassination and death
Caster's final explanation is explicit: he believes the Immortal Flame clan must be destroyed because that is the will of the Sovereigns. He frames obedience as duty, loyalty, and honor, and dismisses Sunny as someone concerned only with survival. The corpus does not identify which Sovereign personally gave the order or what exact instructions reached the Han Li clan, so his statement supports the mission's political source without resolving its full chain of command. (Chapter 338)
Sunny intercepts him high inside the collapsing Spire. Caster's speed and swordsmanship overwhelm Sunny's reactions, but Sunny anticipates attacks using the lesson Nephis demonstrated at the Academy and deliberately takes a wound to seize the hourglass charm. Once the charm is shattered, accumulated age overtakes Caster while continued use of his Ability consumes more life. Sunny distracts the aged Legacy with Extraordinary Rock imitating Nephis and pierces his heart. (Chapters 337–340)
Caster dies insisting that Sunny has no honor. Sunny rejects the idea that honor means allowing powerful people to bind the young to lethal orders and feels vindication rather than joy. Caster's death gives Sunny the final fragment needed to become a Devil and removes the immediate assassin pursuing Nephis, but the Sovereigns behind the Immortal Flame clan's persecution remain beyond both young men's reach. (Chapters 340–341)
Appearance and personality
Caster is tall, broad-shouldered, muscular, and dark-skinned, with brown hair, a gentle handsome face, and humorous green eyes. His strong build and graceful bearing embody the ideal of a young Legacy warrior. After prolonged use of his Ability, he begins to look older than his peers; when his hourglass breaks, he visibly passes through maturity into frail old age within the span of his duel with Sunny. (Chapters 137–140, 207, and 338–340)
Publicly, he is calm, humble, courteous, humorous, and careful even when defeating an opponent. Those qualities win genuine respect among other Legacies and the inhabitants of the outer settlement. Privately, he is proud, class-conscious, manipulative, and committed to hierarchy. Under pressure he calls Sunny a mongrel and worm, revealing that the friendliness he extends downward depends on others remaining in what he considers their proper place. (Chapters 21–27, 137–164, and 338)
Caster is not motivated only by personal malice. He accepts a mission that may consume his life, speaks sincerely of duty and loyalty, and expects Awakening to restore the years his power has taken. Yet he never critically examines the Sovereigns' right to demand Nephis's death. His tragedy lies in converting real courage and discipline into obedience to authorities who remain safe while he dies as their teenage instrument. (Chapters 29 and 338–340)
Abilities and Aspect
Extreme acceleration
Caster's Aspect Ability accelerates him until unaugmented human sight perceives only a blur or nothing at all. It multiplies movement, attacks, and repositioning sufficiently for him to circle Nephis between heartbeats and dominate most Forgotten Shore fighters. Inertia, prediction, terrain, and the need to choose an attack still constrain him: Nephis and Sunny counter by acting before he reaches the position their combat reading predicts. (Chapters 26–27, 70, and 338–340)
Lifespan cost and Flaw
Each use of Caster's power shortens his lifespan. A crystal hourglass charm reverses or suppresses the visible aging, but does not erase the underlying cost; when Sunny destroys it, time catches up and further acceleration ages Caster from a young man into an old one. Caster believes Awakening would return the stolen years, but he dies before testing that belief. The corpus does not provide the formal name of either his Aspect or Flaw. (Chapters 258–280 and 338–340)
Swordsmanship and tactical discipline
Caster is one of his generation's finest swordsmen, trained in Legacy combat from childhood. He uses a slender jian, rapid footwork, precise targeting, and a prepared arsenal of Memories. Speed magnifies this foundation rather than replacing it: he coordinates smoothly with Nephis, exploits fleeting vulnerabilities, cuts Sunny's invisible Prowling Thorn, and repeatedly aims for decisive wounds. Predictable confidence and emotional provocation nevertheless let Sunny shape the final battle around Caster's habits. (Chapters 27, 155–158, 202–236, and 337–340)
Limits outside direct combat
Caster admits that speed is more reliable for escape than killing Nightmare Creatures alone. Powerful monsters still require knowledge, weapons, teamwork, and enough endurance to survive a prolonged exchange. Maintaining extreme speed taxes both body and mind, while its lifespan cost makes attrition especially dangerous. Caster's best results therefore come when a cohort creates a precise opening rather than when he tries to solve every threat through acceleration. (Chapters 140, 155–158, 202–236, and 339–340)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeper / Ascended Aspect | 21–27 | An excellent First Nightmare grants an unusually high-quality Aspect whose speed Ability makes Caster an Academy prodigy despite its hidden life-cost. |
| Lifespan accelerated by repeated speed use | 258–280 | The expedition exposes his increasing apparent age and dependence on an hourglass charm that delays the Ability's accumulated cost. |
| Charm destroyed / rapid aging / death | 337–340 | Sunny breaks the hourglass and forces continued acceleration; Caster ages catastrophically and loses all power when Sunny kills him. |
Relationships
Nephis
Caster begins as Nephis's Academy rival, then joins her cohort under orders to kill her. Their shared Legacy education makes them effective partners and lets each read the other's technique, but neither trusts the relationship: Nephis hides her true battle art because she knows why he was sent, while Caster stays close and waits for vulnerability. His assassination attempt fails before he can reach her in the Spire. (Chapters 24–27, 154–158, 214, 298, 336–340, and 1620)
Sunny
Caster initially treats Sunny's provocations with amused restraint, later uses Harper's death as leverage, and gradually identifies him as an obstacle. Sunny watches Caster's charm, aging, and combat habits while pretending to be weaker and less perceptive than he is. Their final duel is both practical defense of Nephis and a conflict between imposed hierarchy and self-made power; Sunny wins through preparation, deception, and endurance rather than speed. (Chapters 21, 137–168, 258–280, and 337–341)
Cassie, Effie, and Kai
Caster hunts and travels beside Cassie and Effie for months, relying on Cassie's warnings and Effie's knowledge while contributing frontline speed. Kai later joins the broader cohort during the expedition. None is shown learning Caster's full mission before his death, and their cooperation remains operationally real even though its foundation is false. Later recollections treat him as part of the formative Forgotten Shore company, not as a surviving companion. (Chapters 155–158, 188–268, and 333–341)
Items
Crystal hourglass charm
Caster's sandglass charm suppresses or reverses the age imposed by his Ability, allowing repeated acceleration without immediately looking elderly. Sunny notices it during the expedition, tears it from Caster's neck in their duel, and destroys it before Caster can dismiss it back into his soul. Its formal name, Rank, tier, maker, and ultimate balance of stored lifespan are not stated. (Chapters 258–280 and 338–340)
Ghostly green jian and Legacy arsenal
Caster's principal sword is a ghostly green jian sharp enough to cut the Prowling Thorn's invisible tether and pierce Sunny's Awakened armor. He also enters the Dream Realm with multiple ancestral Memories supplied by the Han Li clan, some of which he sells to finance life at the Castle. The sword's formal name and enchantments are not disclosed, and no surviving custodian is established after Caster's death. (Chapters 140, 337–340)
