Effie

Effie, also called Athena and known by the True Name Raised by Wolves, is a founding member of Nephis's cohort, a government Saint, and the ruler of Bastion. Her Aspect grants overwhelming physical power and lets her strengthen everyone who can see her, making the independence that sustained her on the Forgotten Shore the basis of an increasingly public role as pathfinder, commander, mother, and protector.

Biography

The independent huntress of the Dark City

Effie met Sunny, Nephis, and Cassie after surviving nearly three years on the Forgotten Shore. She guided them to the Dark City, explained that its Citadel had no working Gateway, and warned them about Gunlaug's tribute system. Although she despised his rule and lived outside the castle as an independent hunter, she initially believed that his authority prevented worse chaos and cautioned Nephis against trying to destroy that precarious order. (Chapters 126–131 and 151)

Her independence was costly rather than effortless. Effie's physical enhancement made her an exceptional fighter, but her Flaw magnified every bodily need, especially hunger, forcing her to hunt more often than anyone else in a land where food was scarce. Years of solitary expeditions nevertheless gave her a pathfinder's knowledge of safe routes, shelters, and creatures. She became the chief pathfinder for Nephis's hunters, and her warning and spear work helped the group survive encounters including the Spire Messenger. (Chapters 130–159)

Effie ultimately joined Nephis's campaign against the Crimson Spire and commanded the army's first melee line during its siege. When the horde broke around her, she continued fighting after being wounded and buried under Nightmare Creatures, then tore her way free with her hands. By holding the mass of enemies long enough for the human formation to recover, she turned her personal refusal to submit into protection for the whole army. She escaped the Forgotten Shore as an Awakened and became one of its celebrated survivors. (Chapters 316–333 and 373)

A healthy body and the Second Nightmare

Awakening exposed the contrast between Effie's Dream Realm body and her waking one. In reality she had always lived with a twisted spine and nearly motionless legs, relying on a wheelchair and on a family whose care strained their modest finances. She rejected sudden recruitment interest from Great Clans that had ignored her before she became famous, and chose a more dangerous route: becoming a Master, when the fusion of body and soul might heal her disability. While preparing, she lived with Sunny, helped train his spear technique, and entered the Second Nightmare with the cohort. (Chapters 373–375, 461–475, and 2517)

Inside the Nightmare, Effie was trapped in a child's body at the Temple of the Chalice. The War Maidens starved, beat, and trained her, ordering her to kill Sunny and Kai for food; she instead recognized her friends and escaped with them. The ordeal added their lethal martial tradition to her existing strength. Later, she took the Ruby Knife and faced the Sun Prince largely alone, using the Dusk Shard's tremendous variable weight to force the giant from the island and returning badly burned after killing him. The exact final blow is not shown. (Chapters 661–672, 715, and 724–729)

Conquering the Nightmare made Effie a Master and transformed her waking body into the strong, healthy form she had possessed in dreams. Her first response was the exhilaration of walking under her own power. Ascension also expanded her role beyond personal combat: her new Ability allowed her to share a portion of her physical enhancement with any number of allies who could see her, creating the foundation for the mass battlefield tactics she would later employ as a government commander. Commander in Antarctica

Effie and Kai joined the government's Second Army and deployed in the first wave to East Antarctica, each commanding a large detachment. Effie's company, the Wolves, combined elite Awakened, mundane soldiers, vehicles, and war machines; soldiers fighting in her sight received her physical augmentation. She found the administrative and emotional demands of command harder than simply fighting, but accepted Kai's advice and grew into a leader who could translate personal courage into the survival of a formation. (Chapters 1068–1085 and 1160)

At the Battle of the Black Skull, Effie fought beside Morgan, Seishan, Kai, and Jet, then refused Beastmaster's offer of escape and entered the Third Nightmare despite being secretly pregnant. On Wind Flower, Jet guarded her while the cohort broke the repeating cycle. They also encountered Effie's corrupted future self, the Devouring Beast, whose giant form revealed both the eventual scale of her Transformation and the fate awaiting them if they failed. Effie later admitted that she had endangered her child, but could not raise that child to value loyalty after saving herself by abandoning her friends. (Chapters 1215–1230 and 1417–1422)

Effie went into premature labor during the final approach through the abyss. The birth lasted days, but she and her son survived; the infant was already roughly twice an ordinary newborn's size. Effie placed him inside the Black Beast Locket for safety and insisted on joining the last battle once she recovered, reasoning that mere survival was insufficient unless the cohort also created a world in which he could live. Her choice reframed her usual fearlessness as a parent's deliberate acceptance of risk. (Chapters 1545–1550)

Because he was born in the Tomb's central void, Little Ling was treated as a challenger when the Nightmare ended and became Transcendent as an infant. Effie reunited with his father, a mundane Evacuation Army soldier she had met during the Antarctic campaign, and married him; he entered his First Nightmare only after her return and became an Awakened. She consequently emerged from the Nightmare not only as a Saint but as the mother of a child Saint, balancing public celebrity and military duty with a family whose ordinary warmth became one of the things she most fiercely protected. The Wolf Army and the fall of the Domains

In the years after the Nightmare, Effie remained with the government and expanded the Wolves from an Antarctic company into an elite army. She carried thousands of soldiers and their equipment in the Black Beast Locket, entered battle as a colossal giantess, stunned nearby creatures with her roar, and deployed the formation at strategic points. Her shared augmentation and elevated vantage let the troops fight as an extension of her own strength, while her experience with Kai and Jet turned improvised tactics into repeatable military doctrine. (Chapter 1722)

During the war around Bastion, Effie served under Morgan against Mordret's Transcendent vessels. She strengthened every allied Saint in sight, transformed into an armored giantess at least a hundred meters tall, and fought Typhaon in shallow water where the creature could not exploit the lake's depths. She later remained behind as bait while her allies removed Morgan, then released a sleeping Cursed Demon supplied by the Lord of Shadows. The trap cleared the way for Effie to seize the Great Citadel and helped Nephis's faction overthrow the old Sovereigns. (Chapters 1985–1987 and 2227–2233)

After the war, Effie became Steward of the East and took responsibility for Bastion under the new Human Domain. Seeking the power to protect her family, city, and soldiers, she agreed to prepare for a Fourth Nightmare and entered the Palace of Imagination. There, she lived as Detective Athena, retained enough identity to investigate the Nihilist, and ultimately left behind the children and peaceful family Mirage City had given her. She accepted that personal grief rather than allow the false city to consume everyone trapped inside it. (Chapters 2262, 2447–2450, and 2517–2527)

Effie appealed to the Castellan through the aspirations that had shaped her own life. As a disabled child she had imagined health, movement, and strength; after attaining all three, she learned to imagine a world where children could grow and thrive. Her argument helped the Castellan resist stagnation, while Effie and Sunny exposed the Great Mirror and defeated Mordret's invading vessel. By claiming authority over the Palace, she gained the chance to replace Mirage City with an illusion designed to train future Awakened for Nightmares or large-scale war. (Chapters 2548–2550)

The siege of Effie's family

When Asterion returned, Effie was ruling Bastion and the former Wolf Army had become the city's independent peacekeeping force. She destroyed a Great Monster at Rivergate with her bare hands, then met the Dreamspawn at Bastion's northern gate. He carved and destroyed a little wolf figurine in front of a child, an unmistakable threat to Little Ling. Effie recognized the provocation and refused to attack on his terms, but the encounter left her uncertain whom his spreading influence had already compromised. (Chapters 2765 and 2778–2780)

Her suspicions focused on her husband after he hired a new tutor for Ling without consulting her and evaded her questions. Rather than wait for certainty, Effie secretly gave the Black Beast Locket to her son, hid him inside it, and entrusted both to Sunny's Shadow, Nightmare, with orders to reach Aiko on the Forgotten Shore unseen. She then returned to defend Bastion, knowingly leaving herself exposed so that Asterion could not capture Ling with her. (Chapters 2800 and 2830)

Asterion's thralls imprisoned Effie in a runed stone cell beneath Mirage Castle and tried to extract Ling's location by starvation. Even when gaunt, chained, and confronted by her enthralled husband, she refused to answer. Realizing that Asterion could read through him, she deliberately reduced her thoughts to the hunger caused by her own Flaw, turning the torture into mental cover for her son's escape. The latest report leaves Raised by Wolves alive but still chained while her captors continue trying to break her resistance. (Chapters 2800, 2865, and 2877)

Appearance and personality

Effie is very tall, with olive skin, hazel eyes, a robust and powerfully athletic build, and a deep, smoky voice. On the Forgotten Shore her Dream Realm body looked hale while her waking body was frail, with a twisted spine and weak, lifeless legs. Ascension fused body and soul and gave her the same healthy physique in both worlds. As a Saint she remains statuesque in human form, while her Transformation is a human-shaped giantess at least one hundred meters tall; the polished-steel appearance seen in later battles comes from her Supreme armor. She is candid, irreverent, and relentlessly sociable, using teasing and appetite-driven humor even in dangerous situations. That ease coexists with sharp judgment: she survived the Dark City by knowing when not to fight, learned to command despite disliking its burdens, and resists enemies who weaponize her loyalties. Effie's early dependence on her devoted family taught her to trust others rather than equate strength with isolation; as an adult, that lesson appears in her fierce loyalty to the cohort, the Wolves, her husband, and Little Ling. Abilities and Aspect

Effie is a Transcendent battle specialist whose unnamed Aspect develops from personal physical enhancement into protection and empowerment on an army-wide scale. Physical augmentation and hardened body

Effie's Dormant Ability enhances her strength, speed, agility, endurance, and resilience together. Even as a Sleeper she could move multi-ton stone and overpower many Nightmare Creatures; each Ascension magnified the same foundation until she could tear apart a Great Monster bare-handed. Her Awakened Ability makes her body comparatively invulnerable, with skin hard enough that an ordinary dagger slid across it without leaving a scratch. Shared augmentation

Her Ascended Ability grants a portion of her full physical enhancement to allies who can see her. The number of recipients is not presented as limited, and adding more observers does not increase the essence cost, though the boost each receives is weaker than Effie's own. She used it first as the organizing power of the Wolves and later invigorated multiple Saints simultaneously. Transcendent Transformation

Effie's Transformation turns her into a human-shaped giantess at least one hundred meters tall. The form elevates her other Aspect Abilities, supplies colossal reach and mass, and lets entire armies see and benefit from her augmentation; she can carry soldiers in the Black Beast Locket, deploy them from the front, and use large Nightmare Creatures as projectiles. Her polished-steel battlefield appearance is supplied by the Supreme armor inherited from the Sun Prince rather than by the Transformation itself. The Defiled version of Effie deliberately returned to human size against an intangible enemy, while Effie later fought Typhaon in shallow water rather than concede the enemy's advantage in the depths. Martial skill, fieldcraft, and command

Effie is an expert spear-and-shield fighter and pathfinder. Her Dark City experience taught her to read hostile terrain, establish routes and shelters, and judge threats before committing to battle; the Temple of the Chalice later imposed the War Maidens' refined killing style on that practical foundation. As a commander she combines her Aspect with formation tactics, mobile storage, vehicles, and other Saints' powers. Her growth from a solitary hunter to ruler of Bastion is organizational as much as supernatural, although she continues to prefer direct action and sometimes fights bare-handed. Flaw

Effie's Flaw intensifies all physical needs, especially hunger. On the Forgotten Shore it compelled her to secure far more food than other Sleepers and take risks simply to remain functional. The burden persists after Ascension and scales into a severe vulnerability: Asterion's forces exploit it by starving her until her enhanced body consumes itself. Effie counters their thought-reading by filling her mind with the resulting hunger, but doing so protects her secret rather than stopping the physical deterioration. • Sunny: Effie first guided Sunny through the Dark City, later trained his spear work, fought beside him through two Nightmares, and remained one of the friends whose memory of him was severed when he lost his fate.
