Midnight Shard

The Midnight Shard is an austere single-edged sword given to Sunny by Nephis. Its near-unbreakable blade and last-stand enchantment made it Sunny's defining early weapon on the Forgotten Shore and the foundation of the swordsmanship he continued to favor long after stronger weapons replaced it. History

Nephis's gift beneath the Soul Devouring Tree

Nephis received the sword from the Carapace Demon and transferred it to Sunny after their victory beneath the Soul Devouring Tree. The Awakened Memory manifested as a slightly curved tachi with a long, bright blade, black wooden hilt, round guard, and no ornament beyond its purposeful construction. Sunny immediately found it light, maneuverable, and reliable, a dramatic improvement over the scavenged Azure Blade with which he had begun learning Nephis's combat principles. (Chapters 73–76)

The Memory's full appraisal identified it as third-tier and revealed why the weapon seemed to possess a deep reserve of power. Its Unbroken enchantment made the blade extraordinarily durable and empowered a wielder who was close to death but still refused to surrender. Sunny disliked needing failure and mortal injury to access its strongest effect, yet recognized that the condition could turn an otherwise hopeless defeat into a chance to survive. (Chapter 83)

The blade of the Forgotten Shore

Midnight Shard became Sunny's main weapon through the Dark City, the hunting expeditions, and the siege of the Crimson Spire. He used it for precise ambushes, formation fighting, and close combat against Awakened creatures, while its resilience meant that devastating impacts did not leave him disarmed. Its rank still mattered: against Fallen hides on the Chained Isles, the sword had increasing difficulty penetrating targets that had outgrown an Awakened blade. The enchantment reached its clearest expression in Sunny's final duel with Nephis. Already grievously wounded and unwilling to yield, he triggered Unbroken, which strengthened his body and also magnified Blood Weave's restorative effort. The interaction created a temporary cycle in which greater power helped drag him away from death's edge. It let him approach Nephis's strength but did not guarantee victory; she remained stronger, and his survival also depended on augmentation, other Memories, skill, and the developing Shadow Dance. Outgrown but not discarded

After becoming an Awakened, Sunny continued to carry the tachi despite acquiring higher-rank weapons. Its emotional value came from having fought through his darkest year with it, while its design became the basis of the sword form he instinctively preferred. He eventually selected Cruel Sight as a more suitable primary weapon because the Midnight Shard struggled against Fallen enemies and offered its greatest advantage only after a battle had already gone badly. Even as an Ascended, Sunny returned to the feel of a long single-edged blade while sparring with Nephis and described the Midnight Shard as the weapon with which he had learned swordsmanship. He also studied the Shard Memory's unusual weave and understood enough of Unbroken to apply part of its structure to the Siege Souvenir. The old sword therefore influenced both his martial style and his emerging craft after it ceased to be his strongest armament. (Chapters 1255 and 1344)

When the Vile Thieving Bird stole Sunny's fate and severed him from the Nightmare Spell, the Midnight Shard disappeared with most Memories he had not created or modified. Sunny explicitly found it gone and treated those losses as destruction rather than temporary failure to summon. No later passage shows the sword restored. (Chapter 1582)

Abilities and properties

Unbroken

Unbroken makes the blade durable beyond reason and opens a hidden reserve of power when its wielder is close to death and genuinely refuses to surrender. The empowerment can reinforce the wielder's body and interact with other Attributes, as when it strengthened Blood Weave during Sunny's duel with Nephis. It is conditional rather than freely activated: ordinary competent fighting leaves its greatest benefit dormant, and a determined last stand can still fail against a superior enemy. Blade and fighting style

The tachi's seventy-to-eighty-centimeter curved blade is sharp, light, and suited to one- or two-handed use. Its balanced simplicity supported the fluid techniques Sunny learned from Nephis and refined through combat and Shadow Dance. Exceptional durability kept the weapon intact against repeated Awakened-level punishment, but durability did not raise its cutting power enough to make Fallen and stronger targets easy to wound. Shard Memory weave

As a Shard Memory, Midnight Shard possessed a spellweave more labyrinthine than that of an ordinary Memory. Sunny eventually isolated and partly understood the sections responsible for Unbroken, using that knowledge in later crafting, but he did not reproduce the entire sword. The demonstrated transfer of insight therefore reflects partial technical study rather than a recreated Midnight Shard or permanent acquisition of its power. (Chapter 1344)
