Shadow Lantern
The Shadow Lantern is a Divine Memory claimed by Sunny from his Aspect Legacy. Rather than producing light, it consumes it and provides access to an apparently limitless repository for shadows—an enchantment whose name, Gates of Shadow, eventually proves far more literal than its modest form suggests. History
A relic of Shadow God
Sunny claimed the lantern after advancing his Aspect Legacy and received it as a Divine Memory of the first tier. Its description recounts Shadow rising against the Goddess of Life and blotting out the world, while its sole enchantment reverses the ordinary purpose of a lantern: the small, black vessel swallows light and can receive or release shadows. Sunny immediately recognized its value in places where usable darkness was scarce, but also learned that shadows possess agency. Wild shadows generally answered his authority and entered willingly, while especially old ones could refuse, and the shadows of living beings could not simply be compelled to abandon their owners. (Chapters 653–654 and 749)
The stored darkness became a portable reserve for Shadow Manifestation, protecting Sunny from dependence on the surrounding terrain and allowing him to conceal allies or attacks inside a dense cloud. In Antarctica, Saint fired a lethal arrow from the darkness surrounding the manifested lantern during the army's battle against a bone Tyrant. The Memory nevertheless remained a tool rather than an independent source of victory: Sunny still needed essence and his own control to shape shadows, and other wielders still supplied the force behind attacks launched from its cover. (Chapters 749 and 1089)
A gate larger than the vessel
After losing the Nightmare Spell's interface, Sunny retained the lantern among the small set of Memories bound to him. Trying to fuse an incarnation with the Divine Memory exposed how misleading its size was. Even the first-tier lantern contained a spellweave and underlying concept too vast for his mind to embody safely, almost displacing his sense of self. The failed experiment still gave him a deeper impression of its nature: Gates of Shadow was not merely a storage space for darkness but a passage associated with Shadow God and the Shadow Realm. (Chapters 1592 and 1951)
Sunny had already tested the lantern's purportedly infinite capacity with a Fragment of the Shadow Realm. It accepted the fragment but would not release it, distinguishing that piece of a divine Domain from ordinary stored shadows. His later understanding suggested that the lantern did not compress an infinity inside its material shell at all; it opened elsewhere, which explained both its impossible capacity and the fragment's refusal to return by the normal method. The conclusion remained Sunny's source-grounded interpretation of the enchantment rather than an explanation supplied by the Spell. (Chapter 1951)
The shadows of the Eternal City
In the Eternal City, Sunny used the lantern to receive shadows liberated from the Demon of Repose's ancient prison, including Nightwalker's severed shadow. He separated that living shadow from the rest and used his own authority and Weaver's Needle to stitch it back to Nightwalker. The countless dead shadows required a different fate: Sunny opened the route into the Shadow Realm, recruited as many powerful shades as his authority could command, and allowed the remainder to pass into death and dissolve into essence. (Chapters 2702–2707)
The release also destabilized the Demon of Repose's failing palace. The open gate and the Shadow Realm's annihilation of the ancient dead reduced the vast structure to a compact mass before it fell. Once the last shadows crossed, Sunny dismissed and resummoned the lantern without damage, then brought his avatars back through its gate. The small relic therefore remained intact after serving as the focus of a catastrophic transition large enough to destroy the palace's sorcery. (Chapters 2704–2707)
Abilities and properties
Gates of Shadow
The lantern's single enchantment devours nearby light and can contain and release an unlimited quantity of shadows. Sunny can invite wild shadows inside, call stored shadows back out, and use the accumulated darkness as material for his own powers. The enchantment does not erase the distinctions between kinds of shadow: deep and ancient shadows may resist Sunny's authority, a living being's attached shadow cannot be casually stolen, and the Shadow Realm fragment could enter but not be retrieved like an ordinary shadow. (Chapters 654, 749, and 1951)
The gate can lead into the Shadow Realm, allowing dead shadows to complete their passage into death and permitting Sunny's shadow incarnations to travel through it. This access is immensely powerful but not benign. The Realm destroys dead shadows into essence, and the resulting essence storm endangered even Sunny's avatars; he withdrew them and closed the route once the transfer was complete. The lantern survived the event, but survival inside the space beyond its gate depends on the nature and strength of whatever enters. (Chapters 2704–2707)
Physical form and limits
When manifested, the Memory is a palm-sized lantern made from an unidentified black, stone-like substance, decorated with serpent-scale patterns, a short chain, and a gate of glossy black morion. Darkness deepens around it instead of light shining out. Its compact exterior does not make its Divine essence safe to assimilate: even after becoming a Saint, Sunny judged direct fusion with its weave capable of overwhelming his mind and replacing his identity with the relic's far greater conceptual weight. (Chapters 654 and 1951)
