Noctis

Noctis is an immortal Transcendent sorcerer charged with keeping Hope imprisoned beneath the Chained Isles. Charming, theatrical, and dangerously unstable, he becomes Sunny's healer, patron, and principal ally during the Second Nightmare while secretly arranging the deaths of his fellow Chain Lords. His bargain with Weaver reveals that rebellion is also a desperate search for meaning and an end to an immortality distorted by duty and Hope's influence. (Chapters 631–733 and 2729–2730)

Biography

The Beast of Twilight questions his duty

Sun God made Noctis one of seven immortal Chain Lords whose lives and wills formed Hope's shackles. Noctis accepted the task when its purpose seemed clear, but a millennium of guarding the daemon eroded that certainty. Hope's power fed madness throughout the kingdom, and even Noctis recognized that his own judgment could not be trusted. He therefore placed the Ruby Knife, the weapon containing his fate, with an ancient creature in the lake at his Sanctuary. (Chapters 649–650 and 658)

Noctis's doubts led him to summon Weaver long before Sunny's arrival. He asked why Sun God had imprisoned Hope instead of killing her and learned that the Chain Lords' continuing desire to keep her bound, rather than their lives alone, sustained the prison. The answer deepened rather than resolved his crisis: the knives that could end the wardens also looked like keys deliberately left for mortals to break the chains. (Chapters 2729–2730)

Exhausted by immortality, uncertainty, and Hope's pressure, Noctis asked Weaver to help kill the other Chain Lords, release Hope, and let him die. Weaver accepted only after changing the price: she rewrote his closed divine fate so that Sun God's will no longer determined it, then condemned him to live, hope, and serve her together with the immortal in the north. Noctis gained freedom from one bond by entering another whose later demands remain unrevealed. (Chapter 2730)

Meeting Sunless and mending a shadow

Noctis first meets Sunny's Second Nightmare vessel beside a fire after divination guides him to a wounded shadow creature. His bright silks, delicate appearance, and friendly hospitality conceal the pressure of a Saint and the blood on his diamond sickle. Once Sunny inadvertently reveals an obsidian knife capable of killing a Chain Lord, Noctis abandons an unspecified “drastic” alternative and treats their encounter as the opportunity he had been seeking. (Chapters 631–632)

Sunny is dying because the Shadowspawn body has lost one of its two hearts and the remaining heart is failing. Noctis promises to construct a replacement, but first sends him against the black stallion Nightmare in exchange for the necessary heart and for answering a secret hidden by the deceased Shadow Lord. The bargain is coercive and misleading, yet Noctis keeps its essential medical promise: he retrieves Sunny, replaces the heart and lost fingers, and nurses him aboard his flying ship. (Chapters 632–633 and 645–648)

Noctis then explains the Kingdom of Hope and asks Sunny to join a war against the remaining wardens. He wants four other Chain Lords dead so their knives can be used, while he and the immortal in the north already favor Hope's release. Sunny is horrified by the planned bloodshed, but the sorcerer neither seizes the obsidian knife nor forces an immediate answer. His patience mixes genuine need for Sunny's cooperation with confidence that Hope's influence and the Nightmare leave few neutral choices. (Chapters 648–651)

Sanctuary alliance and the seven knives

At the Sanctuary, Noctis reunites Sunny with Kai, then shelters the rest of the cohort after their separate ordeals. He has replaced Kai's burned skin and muscles with enchanted wood and bark, restoring the archer after Sevras's betrayal. Noctis also provides rooms, food, information, and the time needed to recover, while his Sailor Dolls operate the estate and the original Chain Breaker serves as his flying vessel. (Chapters 656–657, 661–662, and 684)

Noctis lays out the seven knives and the practical architecture of his rebellion. Some knives were destroyed with their wardens, the Obsidian Knife was placed in the Sanctuary as a reward for collecting Noctis's coins, the Ruby Knife was hidden with his lake-dwelling confidant, and the remaining blades had to be stolen or recovered. He shares real intelligence while preserving leverage, making Sunny's knowledge of the Shadow Lord and the cohort's mobility indispensable to the plan. (Chapters 658–666)

His help is not limited to war. He identifies the sorcery protecting against Mordret as runic work based on names, gives Sunny lessons that advance his understanding of enchantment, and allows the cohort to retrieve the Ruby Knife after they satisfy the lake creature's moral test. The Sanctuary scenes also expose his vanity, drinking, capricious humor, and artistic incompetence, humanizing him without making his power or manipulation less dangerous. (Chapters 690–700)

Turning deception into open war

The arrival of Sun Prince as a herald forces Noctis to act before every preparation is complete. He pretends to surrender Sunny and the cohort, calculating that Sun Prince's programmed obedience and literal reasoning can be exploited. Sunny recognizes that betraying the people carrying three knives would undermine Noctis's own objective, so he waits rather than attacking. The ruse lets Noctis close the distance and carve away one of the colossus's hands. (Chapters 705–708)

That strike ends any possibility of returning to covert maneuvering. Noctis has attacked a fellow Chain Lord, declared his alliance, and ignited a conflict that will drown the kingdom in blood. The decision is strategic—he needs Sun Prince weakened and Sevras provoked—but it also fulfills the rebellion he had contemplated for centuries. His outward composure after the clash cannot conceal that the war of the immortals has finally begun through his deliberate choice. (Chapters 708–712)

Noctis sends the cohort to steal Sun Prince's knife and divide enemy attention while he prepares for the other wardens. He supplies runic siege weapons, Sailor Dolls, the flying ship, and knowledge of the Chain Lords' opposing cycles of strength. His plans depend heavily on Cassie steering the vessel through an enemy fleet and on comparatively weak challengers completing tasks that immortal combat alone cannot solve, creating a collaboration built as much on trust as manipulation. (Chapters 712–719)

War beneath the crimson moon

Noctis confronts Solvane while Cassie draws Sun Prince's attacks and Sunny's party tears through the aerial fleet. The battle turns with the eclipse: as the moon enters the world's shadow and glows crimson, Noctis's suppressed power surges. Solvane continues to batter and mutilate him, but his immortality denies her a decisive death, and his moon-linked sorcery attacks her from within until the cohort can bring her wooden knife to the battlefield. (Chapters 719–727)

Sunny uses the knife and kills Solvane before Noctis can finish the personal reckoning he has prepared for centuries. Noctis reacts with genuine anger because the act steals the culmination of his vengeance, yet he does not turn on Sunny. The broken shackle matters more than wounded pride, and his body rapidly restores itself under the moon. This restraint shows the line between his volatile emotions and his sustained commitment to freeing Hope. (Chapters 726–730)

Dawn reverses the balance of power. Noctis weakens while Sevras, Child of the Sun, reaches his greatest strength and transforms into an ivory dragon maddened by his brother's death. Noctis nevertheless engages him, alternating between ghostly light and a vast wolf, seeping between scales and accumulating small wounds while cunning compensates for the overwhelming difference in raw power. The struggle drives both immortals toward the Ivory Tower as planned. (Chapters 730–733)

Noctis finally tears open Sevras's neck and breaks a wing, accepting severe and seemingly permanent loss to his own luminous form in the process. Sunny uses the matching knife to make the dragon's wounds fatal. By the time the last chain must be broken, Noctis has vanished from the battlefield; whether he was recovering, answering Weaver's claim, or already displaced by Hope's release is not narrated. His part of the rebellion succeeds, but he does not share the cohort's visible escape. (Chapters 732–733 and 741)

An absent founder's enduring Sanctuary

Thousands of years later, Noctis's home, coins, constructs, and stories remain embedded in the Chained Isles. Sunny encounters the ruined flying ship, the future Covetous Coffer, the coin-operated Sanctuary, and records whose details only make sense after the Nightmare closes the causal loop. These remnants confirm his lasting craft and influence, but none establishes his death or explains what service Weaver demanded after the Kingdom of Hope fell. (Chapters 386, 428, 434, 474, and 515–563)

The Sanctuary grows into a major human city protected by the White Feather clan. During the War of Memories, its population is evacuated aboard the Night Garden just before Mordret descends on the Chained Isles; later reports call the Sanctuary lost. Those events concern the Citadel bearing Noctis's name, not Noctis personally. At the end of the supplied corpus, his rewritten immortality suggests survival was possible, but his location, condition, and relationship to Weaver remain unresolved. (Chapters 2821 and 2861)

Noctis's historical bargain also reframes his apparent disappearance. He did not receive the death he wanted; Weaver explicitly made his life the price of assistance and included the northern immortal in the same claim. The corpus never identifies a later character as Noctis, never shows him die after the chains break, and never narrates his service. Any stronger claim about his present identity would therefore go beyond the local evidence. (Chapters 2729–2730)

Appearance and personality

Noctis appears as a stunning, slender young man with pale skin, immaculate raven-black hair, luminous grey eyes, and smooth, uncalloused hands. He favors extravagant silk garments and carries a diamond sickle. His delicate, pampered appearance sharply contradicts the vast pressure of a Saint. When injured, the attractive facade becomes horrific—missing flesh, bone, and eyes eventually restore because ordinary violence cannot grant him death. (Chapters 631, 645, and 724–730)

He performs cheerfulness as both genuine temperament and camouflage. Noctis loves wine, fine food, beautiful objects, teasing wordplay, dramatic hospitality, and calling Sunny his friend. He can also be vain, lazy, deceitful, vindictive, and casually coercive. His humor frequently remains intact during catastrophe, yet the smiles conceal exhaustion and madness produced by a thousand years of immortal duty under Hope's influence. (Chapters 631–632, 649–650, 657, 662, 693, and 2729–2730)

Despite manipulation, Noctis is capable of care and restraint. He heals Sunny and Kai, protects the Sanctuary, honors the useful core of his bargains, teaches sorcery, and does not punish Sunny for taking Solvane's death. He also willingly risks devastation across the kingdom to release Hope and satisfy a desperate interpretation of divine intent. His compassion and cruelty coexist rather than cancel each other, making simple labels such as benevolent patron or mad villain inadequate. (Chapters 645–665, 684, 726–730, and 2730)

Abilities and Aspect

Immortal shackle

Sun God removed Noctis's fate from the ordinary tapestry and closed it into a loop, preventing normal death while his knife and shackle endured. Wounds that would annihilate a mortal Saint cause pain and temporary incapacity but heal, sometimes rapidly under favorable lunar conditions. The matching divine knife can make death real by cutting the loop; Weaver later rewrites that arrangement, preserving his life while replacing Sun God's determining will with her own claim. (Chapters 658, 724–730, and 2730)

Lunar cycle and Transcendent form

Noctis is the Child of the Moon and Beast of Twilight. His power wanes in sunlight and swells at night, becoming especially fearsome under the crimson eclipsed moon. His Transformation alternates between a colossal spectral wolf and a fluid mass or river of pale light, allowing flight, rapid changes of shape, infiltration between an enemy's scales, and devastating fangs. Daylight does not make him helpless, but it places him at a severe disadvantage against Sevras's complementary solar strength. (Chapters 700, 719–720, 727, and 730–733)

Sorcery, names, and runes

Noctis is a renowned sorcerer whose work includes runic siege bolts, protective charms, enchanted vessels, coins, communication devices, and constructs. He understands name-based runic sorcery well enough to explain the anti-possession talisman and help Sunny isolate the part of an enchantment associated with a Memory's name. His instruction and craft show broad expertise, but the story does not provide a formal Aspect name or claim that every artifact associated with his Sanctuary was made by him alone. (Chapters 690–695 and 718)

Healing and reshaping bodies

Noctis calls himself the kingdom's greatest healer and demonstrates the substance behind the boast. He creates a new heart suitable for Sunny's Shadowspawn vessel, replaces severed fingers, and reconstructs Kai's burned skin and muscles with enchanted wood and bark. These feats require time, materials, and specialized knowledge; he cannot simply prevent every wound in combat, and his own immortality is a separate divine condition rather than proof that his healing makes others deathless. (Chapters 632–633, 645–648, and 684)

Constructs and autonomous control

Sailor Dolls operate Noctis's household and flying ship, while tools, water, clothes, weapons, and carving implements move at his direction without touch. His ship carries runic artillery and can be controlled through enchanted oars; his Mimic serves as dangerous storage and later becomes the source of Sunny's Coffer. These capabilities combine prepared sorcery with fine remote control, but later repairs and alterations by Cassie's cohort are not automatically Noctis's work. (Chapters 631–632, 645–647, 662, 699, 714–718)

Divination and mental manipulation

Noctis uses divination to anticipate Sunny's arrival and recognize the opportunity created by the obsidian knife. He can also alter or erase memories, having removed Sun Prince's memory of where the Ivory Knife was hidden at that immortal's request. Neither power is presented as omniscient or effortless: divination gives a useful meeting rather than a complete future, and the memory bargain contributes to a century of disastrous consequences Noctis says he did not foresee. (Chapters 631–632, 647–650, and 705–706)

Relationships

Sunny

Noctis treats Sunny as a useful prophesied shadow, a patient, a co-conspirator, and—beneath all the jokes—a friend. He deceives Sunny into dangerous bargains but repeatedly preserves his agency when brute force would be easier. Sunny distrusts and insults him while relying on his healing, knowledge, shelter, and war plan. Their alliance succeeds because both understand the other's self-interest and still choose cooperation at the decisive moments. (Chapters 631–733)

Kai, Cassie, and Effie

Noctis restores Kai's ruined body and gives the cohort refuge. Cassie's foresight makes his flying ship viable against an enemy fleet, Effie's recovery of the knife enables Solvane's death, and all three accept the terrible necessity of his rebellion without fully trusting its architect. Noctis values them as capable agents rather than treating them as interchangeable followers, even though his strategy places each in mortal danger. (Chapters 656–684 and 712–730)

The Chain Lords and Hope

Noctis begins as one of Hope's jailers and ends as the chief mortal architect of her release. He regards the other Chain Lords as victims and enemies distorted by the same duty: Solvane becomes the focus of centuries of vengeance, Sevras the central strategic obstacle, and Sun Prince both an abused colleague and a tool. His desire to free Hope combines pity, madness, rebellion against divine ambiguity, and a longing to end his own life. (Chapters 648–658, 700–733, and 2729–2730)

Weaver

Noctis summons Weaver as the only power capable of changing the divine system that binds him. He offers any price while assuming his intended death will limit what can be collected. Weaver outmaneuvers him by demanding continued life and service, then makes his rebellion possible. Their compact grants Noctis his immediate objective but leaves him subordinate to a daemon whose ultimate purpose and later use of him the corpus never reveals. (Chapters 2729–2730)

Items

Diamond sickle

Noctis carries a diamond-bladed sickle as his signature weapon. It is bloodied when Sunny and Weaver encounter him, and it suits his identity as an immortal plotting the deaths of fellow wardens. The corpus does not provide its Rank, enchantments, origin, or final fate, so its visible association should not be expanded into unsupported mechanics. (Chapters 631 and 2729–2730)

Divine knives and coins

The seven knives hold the Chain Lords' severed fates and can end their divine immortality. Noctis controls or tracks several without treating them as ordinary possessions, and his coins create a public mechanism for claiming the Obsidian Knife from the Sanctuary altar. The knives become inert after fulfilling their purpose. Their distribution limits Noctis: he needs Sunny and the cohort because possessing power is not the same as controlling every key. (Chapters 632, 658, 698–700, and 726–733)

Chain Breaker and Covetous Coffer

Noctis is the original captain associated with the flying ship later named Chain Breaker and keeps the living Mimic whose death eventually yields Sunny's Covetous Coffer. Both survive into the distant future in altered circumstances. The ship is recovered and repaired by Cassie's Fire Keepers, while the Mimic's later Memory form belongs to Sunny; neither should be described as Noctis's continuing property. (Chapters 428, 645–647, 714–718, and 741)
