Sin of Solace
The Sin of Solace is a Transcendent jade greatsword received by Sunny during the Antarctic campaign. It is exceptionally sharp, attacks both body and mind, and grows more powerful as its wielder loses sanity. Those strengths are inseparable from its curse: the sword steadily assaults the wielder's mind and eventually produces a hostile apparition that becomes entangled with Sunny's memories and the Mad Prince's plans. (Chapters 869–872, 1001, 1187, 1352, 2302, 2392)
History
The Jade Queen's sinister gift
Sunny received the Memory after his lingering corrosion finished the Corrupted Tyrant called the Remnant of the Jade Queen, whom Tyris had already grievously wounded. The sword's description calls it a whisper of Ariel, Demon of Dread, and connects it to a beautiful monster made queen and given forbidden knowledge. It does not establish that the physical blade once belonged to that ancient queen; it is a Spell-created Memory whose story reflects her history. (Chapters 867–869 and 2302)
The weapon manifested as a nearly feather-light shuangshou jian: a long, straight, double-edged blade of stark white jade with etched patterns, a narrow guard, and a black obsidian hilt. Its beauty concealed an immediate mental hazard. Touching it produced enticing, indistinct whispers, while defensive armor merely weakened rather than removed the pressure. Sunny therefore often entrusted it to Saint, whose immunity to mind attacks let her wield it safely. (Chapters 869–870)
Antarctica and the Third Nightmare
The sword gave Sunny and his Shadows a Transcendent weapon during the Southern Campaign. Its mental damage was especially effective against intelligent enemies, and its fear aura synergized with Nightmare's powers. Yet its strength did not erase ordinary constraints: it still needed a capable wielder, lesser creatures with little sentience were less vulnerable to the mind attack, and Sunny had to weigh every personal use against the curse accumulating in his own mind. (Chapters 870 and 872)
By the Third Nightmare, the curse had become a visible sword wraith that resembled Sunny and mocked him with private fears, failures, and doubts. The apparition was not a separate corporeal companion but a splinter of Sunny's mind caused by the Memory. It retained information across cycles of the Great River, which made it both a tormentor and an accidental store of knowledge that the Defiled Mad Prince could exploit. (Chapters 1187, 1352, and 1573–1575)
The Sin of Solace preserved a sliver of humanity within the Corrupted Mad Prince so it could torment him, helping drive his elaborate attempt to repair the cycle in which Nephis died. At the same time, the wraith carried memories of forbidden knowledge capable of corrupting Sunny once the Estuary Key's seal broke. Thus the curse's unusual continuity supplied knowledge and resistance while also becoming the mechanism through which the Mad Prince hoped to overwrite his uncorrupted self. (Chapters 1573–1575)
Destruction in the Estuary
Sunny first tried to break the jade sword himself, but Perfect Jade withstood his six-shadow-augmented strength. Saint, a Transcendent Devil further augmented by the shadows, shattered it against her shield. The Spell confirmed the Memory's destruction, yet the sword wraith remained because its source was by then Sunny's own divided mind rather than the surviving blade. (Chapter 1576)
Sunny had prepared the Stifled Scream by remaining silent from Verge through the timeless Estuary. His resulting Word of Power ordered the wraith away and erased it along with the Mad Prince's carried memories and forbidden knowledge. Later references describe lessons, history, or revelations left by the Sin of Solace; they do not show the sword restored or still present as an item. (Chapters 1576–1577, 1750, 2302, 2392, and 2836)
Abilities and properties
Sinister Whisper
Sinister Whisper inflicts persistent mental damage on anything the blade cuts in addition to the physical wound. Because greater sentience gives the attack more of a mind to damage, humans and intelligent Demons, Devils, Tyrants, and Terrors can suffer more than simple Beasts and Monsters. The curse can persist after one cut, but resistance, difference in Rank, and the wielder's ability to land a meaningful strike still matter. (Chapters 869–870)
Perfect Jade
Perfect Jade makes the sword's white blade sharp and durable beyond normal logic. Although thin, light, and flexible enough to bend under immense pressure, it returns to a straight form without breaking. Sunny cannot snap it even while reinforced by six shadows; its eventual destruction requires Saint's Transcendent strength, the same augmentation, and a focused blow from her shield. (Chapters 869 and 1576)
Omen of Dread
Omen of Dread carries a remnant of Ariel's presence and passively inspires terror in surrounding beings. It complements Nightmare's fear-centered powers and can weaken an enemy's state of mind before the blade cuts. The enchantment is influence rather than absolute domination: the corpus does not show it compelling every target, overcoming all mind defenses, or distinguishing allies automatically. (Chapters 869–870 and 872)
Hideous Truth
Hideous Truth makes the weapon stronger as its wielder's sanity shatters and offers “revelations of madness” to those who yield to it. This creates a conditional route to power rather than a safe upgrade. The sword's own curse supplies the madness needed to intensify the effect, while the resulting revelations can preserve useful knowledge or expose the mind to truths dangerous enough to enable Corruption. (Chapters 869–870, 1573–1575, and 1750)
Cursed and the sword wraith
Cursed slowly drives the wielder mad through insidious whispers. Mind resistance reduces the pressure, and Saint's immunity lets her wield the blade without the same harm, but Sunny's repeated exposure eventually creates a visible, speaking apparition only he can perceive. Destroying the physical Memory does not immediately remove that entrenched mental fragment; a separately prepared Word of Power is required to erase it. (Chapters 869–870, 1187, and 1573–1577)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Sunny | Recipient and primary bearer — Sunny receives the Memory from the Remnant of the Jade Queen, uses it through Antarctica and the Third Nightmare, and arranges its destruction in the Estuary. (Chapters 867–1576) |
| Saint | Frequent wielder and destroyer — Sunny lends the sword to his mind-immune Shadow for combat; Saint later shatters it at his direction. (Chapters 869–872 and 1576) |
