Covetous Coffer
The Covetous Coffer is a shape-changing storage Memory received by Sunny after killing a Mordant Mimic. Its extradimensional interior, mobility, and appetite made it an unusually capable utility tool; Sunny eventually combined the modified Memory with the dead Mimic's shadow to create the sentient Shadow called Marvelous Mimic. (Chapters 428–432, 538, 959, 1526, 2679–2717)
History
The chest that could bite back
Sunny received the Coffer after defeating the carnivorous treasure chest on Twisted Rock. The Ascended Memory retained the creature's principal traits: it could imitate inanimate forms, hold far more than its exterior dimensions suggested, move on iron legs, and eat would-be thieves. Its description connected the original chest to Noctis's collection, while its four-tier construction made it one of two unusually valuable utility Memories Sunny gained during the expedition. (Chapters 427–428)
The new storage immediately solved a lethal logistical problem. Sunny needed to remove a hoard of ancient coins before Twisted Rock was crushed, and the Coffer could preserve inanimate contents while dismissed into his Soul Sea. When first summoned with his limited Awakened capacity, it appeared only as a mean little jewelry box, yet swallowed his entire pack and followed commands on eight short legs. Stored objects retained their weight, so hiding inside could not protect Sunny from the Crushing and overloading the pocket still remained limited by his soul. (Chapters 428–432)
Portable arsenal and lifeline
Across later campaigns, Sunny used the Coffer for supplies, soul shards, equipment, medical kits, and crafting materials. Its dismissed storage let him carry resources across the Dream Realm and waking world without an external pack, while its ability to walk meant that a heavy manifested load did not always have to be lifted. Access was still tied to summoning the Memory: when his essence was exhausted and he needed the medkit inside, he had to wait until enough power returned to call the Coffer forth. (Chapters 573, 959, and 1526)
The Memory also survived Sunny's banishment from the Nightmare Spell because he had personally modified it. It remained one of the few tools available after the Vile Thieving Bird stole his fate, and he continued to use it during his isolated journeys to carry provisions, relics, and the remains of powerful creatures. Survival after the severing confirmed the stability of his alterations but did not remove the original capacity and weight rules. (Chapters 1582, 1659, and 1750–1763)
From Memory to Marvelous Mimic
Sunny began trying to convert the Coffer into an Echo-like vessel during the Third Nightmare and continued the work while crossing the Hollow Mountains. He combined the modified Memory with the preserved shadow of the Mordant Mimic, attempting the conversion without assistance from the Spell. The completed result became Marvelous Mimic, a Shadow capable of assuming objects and buildings while retaining an independent interior space. The original Coffer no longer exists as a separate standalone Memory after this transformation. (Chapters 1529, 1592, and 1757–1758)
Marvelous Mimic usually served Sunny as the Brilliant Emporium's brick cottage and later as the Dark Castle. Its inner dimension supported living occupants after Sunny altered the old weave to admit them and added light, heat, and air systems. The Shadow could walk, swim, change shape, devour intruders, and produce soul coins, eventually fighting and feeding in its own right. These later capabilities belong to a sentient Shadow companion rather than to an owned piece of furniture, even though the Coffer's structure and the Mordant Mimic's nature are their foundation. (Chapters 1592–1605, 1959–1960, and 2679–2717)
Abilities and properties
Mendacious Coffer
This enchantment lets the Memory imitate any inanimate object. The maximum size and intricacy of the assumed form depend on the capacity of the wielder's Soul Core, which is why Sunny initially summons only a miniature chest. The original effect does not establish living transformation; the later walking house and castle are forms of Marvelous Mimic after the Memory's conversion into a Shadow. (Chapters 428 and 432)
Capacious Chest
The Coffer contains an independent inner space larger than its exterior. It can be summoned or dismissed while preserving inanimate contents, and both the available volume and maximum stored weight scale with the wielder's Soul Core. Objects retain weight and the initial enchantment cannot safely house living beings. Sunny later modifies the inherited structure for Marvelous Mimic, but that enhancement should not be retroactively attributed to the original Memory. (Chapters 428–429, 432, 1605, and 1959–1960)
Locomotive Chiffonnier and Lurid Trunk
Locomotive Chiffonnier gives the Coffer iron legs and lets it follow its wielder, reducing the need to carry a heavily loaded manifested chest. Lurid Trunk defends against thieves by opening a toothed mouth and eating them. Sunny treats it with the wary affection due to a useful but carnivorous tool. The corpus does not show the unconverted Memory independently deciding whom to attack beyond this protective function. (Chapters 428 and 432–538)
Scaling and transformation
The Coffer's capacity and mimicry are soul-scaled, making it a partial model for the bound equipment Sunny later wants to craft. Turning it into Marvelous Mimic required more than increasing those existing enchantments: Sunny created a vessel, incorporated the original creature's shadow, and changed the Memory's nature. The result is not merely an upgraded chest and should not be described as current property or custody. (Chapters 1529, 1592, 1690, 1757–1758, and 1959)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Sunny | Former holder, modifier, and creator of the successor Shadow — He receives and repeatedly alters the Memory, then uses it as the vessel from which Marvelous Mimic is born. (Chapters 428–432, 1529, 1582, and 1757–1758) |
| Marvelous Mimic | Sentient successor, not property — The Shadow inherits the Coffer's form-changing and extradimensional traits together with the Mordant Mimic's shadow, but exists as Sunny's companion rather than as a cataloged item. (Chapters 1592–1605 and 2679–2717) |
