Rain
Rain, whose True Name is Promise of a Distant Sky, is Sunny's younger sister, the first human of the modern world known to Awaken naturally without the Nightmare Spell, and a member of the Shadow Clan. Her development turns a life shaped by other people's attempts to protect her into an independent pursuit of power, sorcery, and constructive work. By the latest supplied chapter, she has naturally Ascended, possesses an Aspect centered on Names and the spirits of things, and has never entered a Nightmare. (Chapters 1, 163, 1827–1831, 2030–2040, 2291–2296, 2862–2882)
Biography
The sister Sunny could not reclaim
Rain was an infant when her biological father died in a work accident and about three when illness killed her mother. She and four-year-old Sunny entered government care, but her age and temperament made her adoptable while his behavior and years in foster homes pushed him onto the streets. Sunny survived partly by imagining that Rain needed him to find and save her. When he eventually observed her adopted family, however, he saw a secure, affectionate home and decided that inserting himself into her life would answer his need rather than hers. (Chapter 163; Chapters 404–405)
As a fourteen-year-old, Rain attended an elite school, studied diligently, and trained with an Awakened combat instructor. Sunny moved into the neighboring house and secretly assessed whether she could survive infection by the Nightmare Spell. He found her swift, versatile, and tactically clever, especially at range, but thought that she lacked the viciousness the First Nightmare might demand. Rather than reveal their kinship, he arranged to enter her life as an Awakened tutor who could improve her chances without disturbing the family that had raised her. (Chapters 404–406, 481–486)
Their first period of training coincided with a Gate opening near Rain's school. Sunny intervened as the masked Mongrel and protected the evacuees, after which Rain's fascination with the unknown warrior complicated her view of her unassuming tutor. She later learned that Sunny was a formidable Forgotten Shore survivor and asked why he hid his strength. His answer—that people had killed more Sleepers there than the Nightmare Creatures had—became part of a harsher education in survival, while his departure for the Second Nightmare made her concern for him increasingly personal even before she knew he was her brother. (Chapters 481–502, 528–558)
Training across years of separation
Sunny returned from the Second Nightmare as a Master and resumed teaching Rain while keeping their biological relationship secret. Their lessons covered weapons, wilderness survival, preparation, and the Dream Realm, and both grew attached while pretending that the arrangement was merely professional. When Sunny left for Antarctica, limited messages and long silences placed Rain in the familiar position of waiting for a mentor who repeatedly vanished into lethal conflicts. She worried, followed news of the campaign, and continued preparing rather than allowing his absence to end her training. (Chapters 748–760, 782–810, 986, 1026–1036)
The Third Nightmare separated them again, and Sunny's later erasure from fate removed Rain's memory of him. After returning as a Saint, he nonetheless placed an incarnation in her shadow and rebuilt their relationship through the persona of “Teacher.” Rain interpreted the shadowless, reflection-avoiding man as a ghost or vampire and dismissed his truthful claim to be her forgotten brother as one more absurd story. For four years he trained her in hunting, weapons, dead languages, essence control, and fieldcraft while urging her to reject the Spell and Awaken naturally. (Chapters 1237, 1586, 1624–1634)
Rain accepted the natural path but resented its cost. She remained mundane while her peers gained enchanted equipment and superhuman bodies, hunted Dormant and Awakened creatures with ordinary weapons, maintained her own gear, and risked death for the foreign essence released by each kill. Teacher offered covert protection but deliberately cultivated uncertainty about whether he would always intervene, forcing her to plan pits, choose reliable equipment, account for wind and terrain, and fight at close range when a bow failed. Her progress therefore depended on both Sunny's guidance and years of disciplined action that no one else could perform for her. (Chapters 1624–1634, 1706–1718)
The long road to natural Awakening
Natural Awakening occurred in the reverse order from the Spell-assisted process familiar to modern Awakened. Rain first absorbed the essence of slain Awakened beings, then learned to sense and consciously circulate her own essence. The final stage required sustaining that flow as a whirlpool until essence solidified and a chain reaction formed a soul core. Progress was slow, difficult to describe in language, and materially dangerous: Rain needed years of killing creatures above mundane human limits, and no Spell supplied instructions, translations, Memories, or a trial calibrated to her. (Chapters 1624–1634, 1827–1829)
Sunny accelerated the final stage by arranging an ordeal around an Awakened Tyrant. Rain and the injured Tamar spent seven days escaping through hostile territory while Rain pulled a stretcher, found shelter and food, crossed a waterfall, and kept the Tyrant's minions from reaching them. Sunny secretly removed threats beyond their ability, but their exhaustion, fear, choices, and final battle were real. Rain completed her core while fighting and killed the Tyrant, proving that her years of control could culminate in Awakening under mortal pressure. (Chapters 1776–1788, 1815–1828)
The newborn core tempered Rain's body and destroyed the dormant seed of Corruption in her soul. She became an Awakened without challenging a First Nightmare, receiving the strength and essence control of the Rank but none of the Spell's automatic support. Rain told Tamar because she wanted the method shared: if others had a choice, fewer children would be forced to die in Nightmares or be stranded as Sleepers in Death Zones. Tamar warned that Sovereigns and institutions might suppress or monopolize the knowledge, so Rain reluctantly agreed to conceal it until the approaching war changed the political order. (Chapters 1827–1832)
Rain then learned that Teacher truly was her forgotten brother. The revelation explained his familial care but also exposed the pressure built into his mentorship: he had decided that she should take an unprecedented path and created a controlled imitation of a First Nightmare to force its completion. Rain did not reject him or the achievement. Instead, she asserted a choice he disliked—joining the Song army—because her friends, neighbors, adoptive family, and the ordinary people of Ravenheart would bear the costs of conquest if she remained safely outside the conflict. (Chapters 1829–1837)
The Seventh Legion and the Crown of Thorns
Rain enlisted as a member of Tamar's cohort in Seishan's Seventh Legion. Before deployment, Sunny brought her into the Shadow Clan and gave her the Mark of Shadows, which helped disguise her lack of an Aspect while granting shadow senses, stealth, improved essence control, a manifested weapon, and access through which Sunny could defend her Soul Sea. Equipped as an Awakened for the first time, she crossed Godgrave as an archer and soldier, initially fighting Nightmare Creatures while wondering how she would respond when the targets became human. (Chapters 1844–1858)
The Domain war tested Rain's decision without making her a loyal instrument of Ki Song. She fought for the people around her, carried out reconnaissance and battlefield duties with Tamar, Ray, and Fleur, and confronted Valor soldiers as the Song army advanced and retreated. Her independent judgment survived divided loyalties: when Sunny fought Song's Saints, she feared for her brother; when Nephis healed Song soldiers, Rain recognized aid from an official enemy; and when she defeated Telle, she refused the seemingly necessary killing blow. (Chapters 1878–1924, 1995–2034)
Sparing Telle unsealed Rain's Flaw, Crown of Thorns: she cannot kill. The prohibition is mediated through her own understanding rather than an external assessment of consequences. Her body refuses an action when she believes it will take a life, but she can fight, wound, immobilize, or redirect force, and a distorted belief can circumvent the protection. In battle the Flaw invalidated the lethal endpoint of much of her training, yet it also fixed her rejection of needless killing into the structure of her power rather than punishing her for remaining compassionate. (Chapters 2030–2034, 2865)
Rain survived the final battle beside Tamar and openly identified the returning Shadow Legion as belonging to her brother. Sunny and Nephis attained Supremacy and killed the old Sovereigns, ending the war Rain had entered to prevent the subjugation of her home. Her service protected people and deepened friendships, but it also left her tired of bloodshed and destruction. Rather than turn her war record into a permanent military identity, she chose the work that had sustained armies without requiring another death: rebuilding the road across Godgrave. (Chapters 2181, 2197, 2204, 2216–2255)
Names, roads, and the Shadow Clan
Rain remained on the Collarbone Plain after the war and helped complete the route connecting the former Song and Sword Domains. Her Aspect unsealed when the road was finished, not during a duel. Its timing clarified the underlying direction of her life: Rain preferred making durable things to destroying them, and the culmination of a great construction project expressed her identity better than a battlefield revelation could. She named the route the Road of Shadows, causing the abandoned Shadow Realm Fragment to stretch along it and protect travelers from Godgrave's deadly sky, then collapsed from expending her entire reserve of spirit essence. (Chapters 2261, 2291–2292)
As the Shadow Clan's princess, Rain held a recognized place in Sunny's hidden organization but refused to live as ornamental royalty. She returned to road work, later joined Chief Beth's civil-engineering team at the Rivergate Dam, and studied Shaping under Nephis. The choices united her three inheritances without making any one of them absolute: her adoptive upbringing gave her a civilian vocation, Sunny's clan gave her protection and responsibility, and Nephis's instruction developed the sorcerous affinity revealed by her Poet Attribute. (Chapters 2269–2280, 2290–2300)
Rain also worked with Tamar and other young operatives during Shadow Clan missions. Her inability to kill made direct assassination unsuitable, but Names, Epithets, Shaping, archery, and careful coordination let her restrain stronger enemies and support lethal teammates without personally ending a life. The most visible heir of this period was not a body count but a growing body of infrastructure, sorcerous knowledge, and field experience. While her friends considered the Second Nightmare, Rain accepted that natural advancement placed her on a different and less mapped road. (Chapters 2291–2296, 2417–2424)
Natural Ascension and refuge in the Ebony Tower
Years later, Rain pursued Ascension by studying how an Awakened core made from solidified essence could be reforged to contain the more potent essence of a Master. She identified a slow method—gradual replacement over years or decades—and a radical method: destroy the existing core and immediately construct a new one from Ascended essence. The latter normally causes the soul to collapse, so she combined her construction-based model of the process with Epithets meant to make herself enduring enough to survive the interval. (Chapters 2860–2864)
Rain chose the radical method while Asterion's followers closed around the Ivory Tower. She named herself Long-Lasting, Enduring, and Ascended, shattered her soul core, and successfully shaped a new one while a violent storm gathered around the Citadel. The achievement made her a Master without a Second Nightmare just as her Awakening had made her an Awakened without a First. It dramatically improved her physique and essence control, but the timing was not wholly independent: Asterion had already influenced her and used the dangerous attempt to distract Cassie. (Chapters 2862–2865)
Under Asterion's distortion, Rain assigned debilitating Epithets to Cassie and stabbed her while believing the act would not kill, demonstrating the subjective limit of Crown of Thorns. Cassie survived, entered Rain's memories, and purged the contamination, but the cleansing erased Rain's memory of how she had Ascended. Rain then helped reopen the portal to the Ebony Tower by Shaping the True Names of Fire, Divinity, and Stepping Across Thresholds, enabling Cassie and the Hollow remnant of Smile of Heaven to escape the falling Ivory Island. (Chapters 2865–2870)
At the Ebony Tower, Rain tested a body whose strength and precision she had not yet learned to control, explored Nether's workshop, and met the gentler imprisoned shard of Mordret. He offered to reconstruct the natural Ascension method she had lost and to teach her Transcendence. Cassie subsequently identified Rain's new Ascended Ability as communication with the spirits of things: a capacity to understand languages, sense the nature and truth of living or inanimate subjects, and potentially combine that insight with Naming and building. The latest chapter leaves her alive, naturally Ascended, and still outside the Nightmare Spell—not inside or preparing for a First Nightmare. (Chapters 2879–2882)
Appearance and personality
Rain has pale skin, black hair, and sharp dark eyes, visibly resembling Sunny and their biological mother. At fourteen she was slender and awkward in the way of a growing teenager, while years of field labor and combat made her poised, athletic, and proficient with a wide range of weapons. Natural Awakening removed her calluses and scars and tempered her into a striking young woman; natural Ascension later increased her physical strength by orders of magnitude and forced her to relearn fine control over movement and essence enhancement. (Chapters 404–406, 1624–1626, 1828, 2879)
She is hardworking, resourceful, observant, and possessed of a dry humor that survives exhaustion and danger. Rain plans traps, maintains equipment, studies languages, and accepts unglamorous labor, yet she also enjoys fashion, pastries, and the chance to feel like an ordinary young woman. Her compassion is not ignorance of violence: she understands why people kill and can fight ruthlessly, but refuses to let necessity become an automatic excuse. Crown of Thorns formalizes this disposition, while her decision to join Song shows that kindness does not make her politically passive. (Chapters 406, 1624–1634, 1829–1837, 1844–1858, 2291–2293)
Building is Rain's clearest positive ambition. She returns to construction after war because she is tired of watching lives and cities be destroyed, studies civil engineering under Beth, and admires Nether as a creator whose works still shelter humanity after civilizations have vanished. Her metaphors for Awakening and Ascension are architectural because she understands the soul as something that can be shaped, reinforced, dismantled, and rebuilt. This practical imagination links her profession to her Aspect rather than separating a civilian career from supernatural growth. (Chapters 2269–2274, 2291–2296, 2862, 2879–2882)
Abilities and Aspect
Natural Awakening and essence control
Rain's Awakening was achieved without the Nightmare Spell. She absorbed essence released by slain Awakened beings until her own essence awakened, learned to sense and circulate it consciously, then maintained a whirlpool that solidified into a soul core. The process gave her no convenient runes, automatic translation, starting Aspect, or supplied Memories. It also offered no guaranteed safety: the essence had to come from dangerous prey, sensing it took years, and a mistake while mundane could be fatal. Sunny's instruction and hidden protection made the feat possible, but Rain performed the control and combat herself. (Chapters 1624–1634, 1815–1829)
Natural Ascension likewise depended on control rather than a Nightmare. Rain shattered her Awakened core and built an Ascended core before her soul collapsed, using three self-applied Epithets to endure the transition. The result multiplied her physical ability and refined her essence control, but it was a near-lethal approach chosen under outside mental influence. Because Cassie erased the contaminated memories, Rain cannot currently reproduce her own complete experience; Mordret's surviving shard offers relevant knowledge, but the supplied corpus ends before any lesson or independent verification occurs. (Chapters 2862–2865, 2879–2881)
True Name, Attributes, and Flaw
Rain's True Name is Promise of a Distant Sky, earned through the distinction of natural Awakening and interpreted by Cassie, Sunny, and Nephis. Her Poet Attribute attunes her soul to Names and gives her an innate talent for Shaping. Godheart bonds her heart to the world, enabling a separate reservoir of spirit essence and causing weather to react to strong emotion. Mark of Shadows is externally bestowed, granting affinity with shadows, nocturnal perception, stealth, improved control, a weapon manifestation, and a channel through which Sunny can enter and defend her Soul Sea. (Chapters 1844–1845, 2030–2038)
Her Flaw, Crown of Thorns, prevents her from killing when she understands an action as lethal. It does not prevent combat, injury, indirect support, or every action that might eventually contribute to death. The restriction is also not an infallible protection for others: Asterion bypassed it by changing Rain's perception until she believed stabbing Cassie would not kill her. Conversely, Rain can stop at the decisive moment even under battlefield pressure, as she did with Telle. The Flaw therefore depends on sincere belief and creates both moral clarity and exploitable uncertainty. (Chapters 2030–2034, 2865)
Names and Epithets
Rain's Dormant Aspect Ability bestows permanent Names on things by spending spirit essence once. The Name is more than a label and gives the named subject a measure of power or identity proportional to the investment. Naming the Road of Shadows consumed Rain's accumulated reserve but drew the Shadow Realm Fragment across most of the route. Names expressed in the Spell's runic language are more efficient, while something that already possesses a True Name cannot be Named by this Ability. Her unresolved limit is replenishment: Rain accumulates spirit essence through her bond with the world, but has not established a predictable method for doing so. (Chapters 2037–2038, 2291–2292)
Her Awakened Ability assigns temporary descriptive Epithets sustained by soul essence. At Awakened Rank she could maintain two at once; after Ascension she can maintain three. A fitting descriptor costs less than one that contradicts the subject's nature, living beings are more expensive than objects, and knowing a subject's Name or True Name improves efficiency and effect. Representative uses include making a shield durable and magnetic, rendering an opponent briefly immobile, reinforcing allies, suppressing herself with useful states, and making herself enduring enough to survive the destruction of her soul core. (Chapters 2292, 2417–2424, 2864, 2882)
Shaping and communication with spirits
Poet allows Rain to learn the Sorcery of Names from Nephis. A Shaper speaks True Names and combines them into Verses that alter the world, a process requiring accurate knowledge, endurance, essence, will, and creative construction. Names strain to escape human memory, a faltering invocation can injure the sorcerer, and Rain's capacity is far below Nephis's raw will and reserves. Rain is nevertheless a quick learner who finds Verses intuitive, prefers noncombat applications, and has invoked Fire, Divinity, and Stepping Across Thresholds to reopen the portal between the Ivory and Ebony Towers. (Chapters 2295–2296, 2869)
Rain's Ascended Ability lets her communicate with the spirits of things and know something of their truth. Universal language comprehension is a side effect; the deeper function may let her intuit the nature of a living being, weapon, material, mountain, or collective entity, although Cassie and Rain do not yet know the full scope. This insight can make Epithets more accurate and efficient, help a Named thing develop and disclose identity, and reveal structural weaknesses in metal or stone. These applications are Rain's reasoned expectations in the latest chapter, not yet demonstrated feats, and the corpus does not establish which ordinary objects possess spirits strong enough to answer. (Chapter 2882)
Combat, survival, and construction
Rain is an accomplished archer trained by Sunny and, for a period, Kai, and she can also use swords, spears, javelins, and improvised traps. Before Awakening she killed Dormant and Awakened creatures through preparation, terrain, precise shots, and physical discipline rather than superior attributes. After Awakening she served through a Domain war and coordinated Names, Epithets, Shaping, and the Mark of Shadows against stronger enemies. Crown of Thorns prevents lethal finishes, so her latest combat role emphasizes restraint, fortification, control, and support rather than assassination. (Chapters 406, 1624–1634, 1706–1718, 1844–2034, 2324, 2417–2424)
Her mundane education is part of her effective power. Rain understands equipment maintenance, logistics, roads, structural work, and civil engineering; she has helped build the Godgrave road and Rivergate Dam and uses construction principles to reason about soul cores. The combination of engineering, Names, and spirit communication has unusually broad promise, but current evidence remains early-stage. She can identify plausible applications and has one monumental success in the Road of Shadows, not yet effortless command over structures or the world. (Chapters 1625–1626, 1776–1788, 2269–2274, 2291–2296, 2862, 2882)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Natural Awakening / first soul core | 1825 | She maintains an essence whirlpool until it solidifies into a core, becoming Awakened without a Nightmare or Spell-provided advancement. |
| Aspect and Flaw naturally unsealed | Before Chapter 2292; foreshadowed Chapter 2249, revealed Chapter 2292 | Her dormant Aspect finishes awakening outside the Nightmare Spell and supplies both Dormant and Awakened Abilities; its unsealing also brings the Flaw that prevents her from knowingly killing. |
| Natural Ascended Master | 2864 | Under hostile mental influence, Rain shatters her Awakened core and builds an Ascended one while three self-applied Epithets keep her soul from collapsing. |
Relationships
Sunny
Sunny is Rain's biological brother, first secret observer, long-term teacher, clan leader, and most powerful protector. He initially respected her adopted life by remaining outside it, then entered as a tutor because he feared the Nightmare Spell would reach her. His later insistence on natural Awakening placed an extraordinary burden on her, while his hidden interventions made that burden survivable. Rain ultimately accepts him as both brother and teacher without surrendering autonomy: she joins a war he dislikes, chooses construction over prestige, and continues on a path he can guide but no longer fully explain. (Chapters 163, 404–406, 481–502, 1624–1634, 1827–1837, 2027–2040)
Rain's adoptive family gave her the safety and education Sunny had imagined he needed to provide. The supplied chapters show her parents as loving, reasonably prosperous people connected to government life, and Rain treats their interests as part of her reason to resist a future in which one Great Clan absorbs every independent institution. The corpus does not name them or explore their later activities in comparable depth, but their home remains essential to why Sunny approached cautiously and why Rain grew into someone capable of trust rather than merely survival. (Chapters 404–406, 1832–1837)
Tamar and Telle
Tamar becomes Rain's friend, comrade, first witness to natural Awakening, and later fellow member of the Shadow Clan. Rain drags the injured Legacy through the ordeal that creates her core, trusts her with the method, and joins the war partly because Tamar and her people would suffer from conquest. Tamar in turn protects the secret, serves beside her, and eventually accepts a role that includes acting as Rain's bodyguard. Their bond crosses class and family differences through shared labor, danger, and grief. (Chapters 1776–1832, 1844–2034, 2290–2293)
Telle begins as an enemy soldier whom Rain defeats but refuses to kill. That choice reveals Crown of Thorns and later becomes the basis of friendship rather than a permanent wartime grievance. After the Sovereigns fall, Telle socializes with Rain and Tamar and considers challenging a Nightmare with Tamar's cohort. Their relationship embodies a consequence Rain hoped for when she stayed her hand: an enemy survives long enough to become a trusted companion in a political order no longer divided by the old Domains. (Chapters 1995–2034, 2290–2293)
Nephis, Cassie, and Mordret
Nephis moves from distant hero to battlefield enemy, Sovereign, and teacher. Rain feels shame fighting on the opposing side after receiving the cohort's kindness, but Nephis's rescue of Song soldiers confirms that official allegiance does not exhaust personal loyalty. After the war, Nephis teaches her Shaping. Cassie interprets Rain's Attributes, True Name, Flaw, and Ascended Ability, then protects her even after an enthralled Rain stabs her, cleansing the influence and guiding their escape. (Chapters 1180–1202, 2027–2040, 2295–2296, 2864–2882)
Mordret is both the dangerous Sovereign sheltering Rain at the latest point and the source of a possible replacement for knowledge Asterion caused her to lose. Rain distrusts the King's polished normality, but the gentler shard imprisoned in his Mirror Realm presents himself as another naturally advanced carrier of the Spell and offers to teach her. She accepts with humor rather than confidence. The relationship is only beginning by Chapter 2882, so neither the effectiveness of his instruction nor the King's tolerance of it is established beyond the immediate conversation. (Chapters 2879–2882)
Items
Rain's early equipment was deliberately mundane: a modest recurve bow, arrows tipped with Awakened fangs, a repaired military bodysuit, light armor, a sword, and a javelin. Their limits shaped her combat method—one clean hit could kill her, the bow could not overpower every creature, and each item required maintenance—but they also taught reliability, preparation, and field repair before enchanted equipment could conceal mistakes. (Chapters 1624–1634)
After Awakening, Sunny supplied the Puppeteer's Shroud, the Beast of Prey, and an inexhaustible Essence Quiver. The armor improves durability, mental endurance, and resistance to mental attacks; the bow can enhance arrows and discharge a devastating essence-heavy shot, with stored essence allowing preparation for another; the quiver supplies silent, armor-piercing arrows. These Memories make Rain more capable but remain bounded by her essence, accuracy, and Crown of Thorns. (Chapters 1844–1845, 2036–2038)
Her broader toolkit includes the Mark of Shadows, a storage bag, canteen, emergency positioning sash, protective utility Memories, and the black-silver bracelet Sunny built to display a limited imitation of the Spell's runes. The bracelet identifies her state, Attributes, Flaw, and equipment but is not omniscient; it provides information Sunny wove into it rather than the full guidance of the Nightmare Spell. No single catalogued item is required for Rain's article inventory, and her most consequential creations remain the Names and structures she makes rather than an artifact she carries. (Chapters 1844–1845, 2036–2038, 2284, 2292)
