Soul Serpent
Soul Serpent is the living Shadow awarded to Sunny for mastering the first step of Shadow Dance. It is not an ordinary owned object or a Spell Memory: it is a sentient, loyal companion that can rest on a bearer as a serpent tattoo, become a weapon or enormous beast, imitate the shadows of slain creatures, guide essence, and share aspects of its power with others. Its Rank follows Sunny's mastery of Shadow Dance, while its Class follows his number of shadow cores. (Chapters 358–359, 376, 434, 543, 721, 1731, 2573, 2608–2636)
History
First relic of Shadow Dance
Sunny claimed the first relic of his Aspect Legacy after mastering Shadow Dance's first step. Instead of receiving a Memory, he received a second Shadow alongside Saint. Soul Serpent initially appeared as an intricate black tattoo coiling over his torso and arms. Its runes described it as a Dormant Monster, matching the first Rank and Sunny's then-current Class rather than Sunny's Awakened Rank. (Chapters 358–359)
Even in that initial state, Serpent strengthened Sunny's control of shadow essence and could flow from the tattoo into a black odachi. When Sunny's Class advanced to Demon it learned to take the shape of any weapon, although the quality of a chosen configuration depended on how thoroughly Sunny understood that weapon. Mastering Shadow Dance's second step raised Serpent to Awakened and unlocked a separate serpent body and essence returned from its kills. (Chapters 359, 527, and 549)
Growth, independence, and Rain
The third Shadow Dance step raised Serpent to Ascended. Grace of Shadows then allowed Sunny to entrust the companion to another bearer. Before leaving for Antarctica, he secretly transferred Serpent into Rain's shadow and ordered it to remain concealed unless she faced mortal danger. Rain was mundane and possessed no core at the time, showing that Grace differs from transferring an Echo or Memory. (Chapters 653 and 810)
This decision deprived Sunny of Serpent's essence guidance and combat forms throughout much of Antarctica, but he repeatedly judged Rain's safety more important. Serpent continued to grow with Sunny despite the distance and could use Formless to imitate eligible shadows contained in Sunny's soul. After Sunny returned from the Third Nightmare, the companion was again with him and helped him cross the ocean, defeat the Winter Beast, and rebuild his strength in isolation. (Chapters 1027, 1036, and 1649–1653)
Transcendent and Supreme companion
As a Transcendent Terror, Serpent gained or revealed Spirit Guide, Soul Companion, Mark of Shadows, and Slaying Blade. Because Sunny was cut off from the Nightmare Spell, the labels and descriptions recorded at this stage were his own interpretation rather than authoritative Spell text. He expressly remained uncertain whether some traits were new, evolutions of older powers, or more complex than his provisional explanations. (Chapter 1731)
Serpent later rose with Sunny to Supreme Titan. It fought as a separate colossal sea serpent beside Sunny, Naeve, and Bloodwave, and served as a vast slaying weapon against the Flesh of Kanakht and the fallen immortals. These scenes demonstrate Supreme power but not limitless lethality: even Slaying Blade could cut beings whose Will resisted ordinary weapons, yet it could not permanently kill creatures whose immortality was sustained by an external phenomenon. (Chapters 2608, 2636, and 2709)
In the latest Nightmare Desert campaign, Serpent remains one of Sunny's three foremost Shadow champions. Through Formless it assumes Anvil's armored form, commands seven swords, and manipulates nearby weapons while fighting the Deathless. A later lesser serpent associated with Rain is a product of Serpent's marking powers, not evidence that the original Supreme Shadow has split custody or ceased accompanying Sunny. (Chapters 2797, 2846–2848, 2851, and 2866)
Abilities and properties
Shadow Guide and Spirit Guide
As a tattoo, Shadow Guide improves the circulation, control, expenditure, and recovery of Sunny's shadow essence. Spirit Guide later improves absorption of elemental essence even when Serpent is not in tattoo form. Sunny is unsure whether Spirit Guide is truly separate or an evolution of the original trait, and its presence does not make his reserves infinite; maintaining demanding forms and borrowed abilities can still exhaust Serpent and its master. (Chapters 359, 376–377, 549, 721, and 1731)
Soul Weapon, Serpentine Steel, and Slaying Blade
Soul Weapon turns Serpent into an armament whose Rank rises with Shadow Dance. Serpentine Steel expands that form from the original odachi to any weapon Sunny can accurately conceptualize, making familiar swords and spears more effective than poorly understood shapes. Slaying Blade embodies Shadow God's association with death and can bypass some of the Will by which greater beings resist harm, but Sunny's account is observational and does not claim that it ignores every defense or guarantees death. (Chapters 359, 527, 653, 1731, 2636, and 2709)
Soul Beast, Soul Reaver, and Soul Companion
Soul Beast manifests Serpent as an independent onyx snake whose size and power scale with its Rank and Class. Soul Reaver returns a portion of essence from beings slain in beast or weapon form. Soul Companion can fuse Serpent with Sunny's Shadow Shell, adding traits such as Soul Reaver and Slaying Blade to the constructed body. Kills are required for replenishment, and both transformation and copied powers consume essence. (Chapters 549, 620, 1649–1653, and 1731)
Formless
Formless allows the Soul Beast to assume the shape of any shadow preserved in Sunny's soul, inheriting that creature's traits and abilities. The chosen shadow is not consumed, but it must be of the same or lower Rank and Class than Serpent. This makes the Shadow extraordinarily versatile while tying its available forms to Sunny's actual slain enemies and Serpent's current level. Its late imitation of Anvil demonstrates how formidable the power becomes at Supreme rank. (Chapters 702, 721, 1036, and 2846–2848)
Grace and Mark of Shadows
Grace of Shadows lets Sunny entrust Serpent's companionship to anyone who possesses a shadow, even a mundane human, but its description warns that doing so exposes part of his soul and removes Serpent's direct aid from him. Mark of Shadows later creates lesser soul-serpent marks for vassals without transferring the original companion. Sunny initially could not mark Rain before her Awakening and remained uncertain whether each mark was a new being or a manifestation; later clan members use the marks as a sign of loyalty and resistance to infiltration. (Chapters 653, 810, 1027, 1731, and 2829–2830)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Sunny | Master and bonded companion — Serpent is Sunny's first Aspect Legacy Shadow, grows with his Class and Shadow Dance, and normally accompanies or fights beside him. (Chapters 358–359, 1731, and 2608–2851) |
| Rain | Temporary protected bearer — Sunny entrusts Serpent to mundane Rain before Antarctica; the companion later returns to Sunny. Rain's later lesser serpent is associated with Mark of Shadows rather than custody of the original. (Chapters 810, 1027, 1731, 2797, and 2846) |
