Cruel Sight
Cruel Sight is an Ascended weapon received by Sunny after killing a mirror-like Fallen Devil in the Chained Isles. It shifts between sword and spear, manipulates light, strikes incorporeal beings, and can permanently hold an elemental charge copied from damage suffered by its wielder. (Chapters 415–417, 455, 552, 781, 1582, 1766)
History
A weapon for the Chained Isles
Sunny received Cruel Sight when his Awakened Midnight Shard was becoming inadequate against the Fallen creatures of the Chained Isles. The new weapon was Ascended and fourth-tier, giving it enough inherent sharpness and durability to confront enemies that resisted his older blade. Its story described a king's bargain with a Dreamspawn and the feared return of the child taken as payment, connecting its mirror-bright blade to unease about perception and identity without explaining the weapon's maker. (Chapters 415–416)
The Memory's two forms immediately expanded Sunny's options. As a short, double-edged sword it was swift and suited to stealth or confined spaces; as a long spear it gave him reach and allowed both thrusts and cuts. Sunny initially lacked polearm mastery, so the transformation offered potential rather than instant expertise. He practiced and later incorporated spear work into his broader martial development. (Chapters 415–417 and 552)
Borrowing the force that hurt him
Sunny charged Dark Mirror by briefly entering the soul-eroding field of Broken Oath. Because the enchantment could adopt an element that had damaged its wielder, the weapon then carried soul damage in addition to physical force. The method gave him a rare answer to protected or unusual enemies, but required that he first survive exposure to the same harmful element and recover from the wound to body, mind, or soul. (Chapter 416)
The light-channeling enchantment also let Cruel Sight transfer divine flame into the Ebony Tower's dormant portal. Sunny activated Dark Mirror, filled the blade with incandescent white light, and pressed it to the obsidian arch. The weapon emptied his essence into the structure and made its runes glow without opening the gate, proving it could serve as a conduit while also showing that its wielder's reserves and the target's requirements remained hard limits. (Chapter 455)
Divine augmentation and destruction
After Nephis returned, Sunny and Nephis tested how their Divine Aspects combined. Concentrating white flame and multiple shadows on Cruel Sight made the Ascended weapon roughly fifteen times deadlier and temporarily comparable to a Transcendent armament. That extraordinary result came from external augmentation by both wielders, not from a permanent evolution of the Memory. It also showed why the adaptable spear remained useful even after Sunny's personal power advanced. (Chapter 781)
Cruel Sight disappeared with Sunny's unmodified Memories when the Vile Thieving Bird stole his fate. Sunny later remembered Shapeshifter, Light Eater, and Ghost Blade while considering enchantments for future soulbound weapons, preserving their design in his knowledge. A later myth calling truth “the most cruel sight of all” is unrelated wording and does not show the item restored. (Chapters 1582, 1766, and 2500)
Abilities and properties
Shapeshifter
Shapeshifter changes the Memory between a light one-handed sword and a long spear. Both forms retain the same mirrored leaf-shaped blade, with the black wooden hilt extending into a shaft for the spear. The sword favors speed, flexibility, and close quarters; the spear adds distance and leverage. Switching form does not supply the martial skill needed to use each configuration well. (Chapter 415)
Light Eater
Light Eater allows the blade to reflect, absorb, and expel light. Sunny can use those changes to affect nearby illumination, create or alter shadows, blind an opponent, or channel stored radiance into another structure. The corpus does not establish infinite storage or independent generation of light, and the Ebony Tower test exhausted Sunny before it opened the portal. (Chapters 415 and 455)
Ghost Blade
Ghost Blade lets Cruel Sight strike incorporeal targets that ordinary physical weapons cannot harm. The effect gives Sunny a direct answer to wraiths and similar beings but does not automatically locate, bind, or overpower them; he must still perceive the target, land a blow, and supply enough force to defeat its Rank and defenses. (Chapters 415–416)
Dark Mirror
Dark Mirror augments every attack with an elemental damage type previously suffered by the wielder. The charge is persistent until replaced and can encompass unusual “elements” such as soul erosion, greatly broadening the weapon's applications. Acquiring a charge requires genuine exposure to harm, making preparation costly, while the resulting damage can still be resisted by sufficiently powerful enemies. (Chapters 415–416)
Construction and combined augmentation
Cruel Sight's polished silver blade is both weapon and perfect mirror, joined to engraved silver fittings and black wood. Its Ascended rank and four enchantments made it formidable in its own era, while shadows, Nephis's flames, or the Crown of Dawn could amplify it further. Those enhancements came from external powers and did not prevent the weapon's destruction when Sunny lost his Spell-bound Memories. (Chapters 415, 781, and 1582)
Ownership and custody
| Holder or custodian | Relationship to the item |
|---|---|
| Sunny | Sole holder and wielder — He receives Cruel Sight from a Fallen Devil, learns both forms and charges, and loses it after his banishment from the Spell. (Chapters 415–781 and 1582) |
