Ning Wan

Ning Wan, also known as Qiuhu and the Autumn Lake Fairy, is a Ning Family cultivator whose ties to the Li Family begin when she is a young Azure Pond official. She becomes a skilled formation master and develops the Cold Essence Fate Divine Ability Clear Hearing. Her friendship with the Lis and her responsibility for Azure Pond repeatedly place her between people she wishes to protect and authorities she cannot safely oppose.

Biography

A sect official watches the Li Family rise

Ning Wan initially serves at Moon Lake Peak, which governs the region around Moongaze Lake. When Li Chejing learns that she will collect tribute in Lixia Prefecture, he asks her to look after his family. She accepts the request as an ordinary duty between fellow disciples and carries his spirit stones home. This connection gives the farming household a personal channel to Azure Pond while it is still dependent on distant sect officials. Her consideration does not free the family from tribute, but it makes the institution less wholly impersonal. (Chapters 46–50)

At the tribute gathering, Ning Wan conducts the business of thirty-four families without the hostility shown by some local intermediaries. She accepts the Xiao Family's account without inspection because she trusts its reputation, and her exchanges with Xiao Chuting are relaxed. Her authority already rests on unusual talent: at twenty-four, she has reached the eighth heavenly layer of Qi Cultivation and is noted for formation skill. Yet her early dealings show that competence and sect standing need not require gratuitous humiliation of weaker households. (Chapters 48–50)

The limits of that restraint become clear during Situ You's massacre. Ning Wan is troubled by the killing of civilians and privately rejects the idea that every possible future threat justifies slaughter. She nevertheless understands the danger of interfering with her sect's operation. Having attained Foundation Establishment more than a decade earlier, she is the strongest concealed cultivator present; she deliberately leaves the arrow aimed at Situ You unintercepted, satisfied that his death will not disrupt the wider plan. Her sympathy remains constrained by institutional loyalty, but the Li Family's violent opposition does not automatically become a personal grievance against them. (Chapter 163)

Warnings, hidden origins, and an earned respect

As the Lis grow stronger, Ning Wan tries to restrain provocations from her own side. During the Fei investigation, she rebukes Ning Heyuan for confronting the family instead of waiting at the lake. Privileged descent cannot guarantee safety after a faction loses its protection, and she treats his recklessness as a danger to the Ning Family's position. Her attitude combines loyalty with a practical recognition that former tributaries can become powerful enough to resist their patrons. (Chapter 336)

Her exchanges with Li Xuanfeng are more complicated. She respects his abilities, remembers Chejing warmly, and does not treat Situ You's death as a reason for revenge. At the same time, she probes the family's extraordinary succession of Foundation cultivators and its account of mortal spiritual orifices. She warns that such an explanation, if passed to a Daoist Master, could have serious consequences. Her gentle manner therefore accompanies political scrutiny: she can be a sympathetic acquaintance and still occupy a position through which the family's secrets might become dangerous. (Chapters 432–433)

By the time she reaches peak Foundation Establishment, this wary relationship has developed into mutual assistance. She gives Xuanfeng information about the ambush of Guo Hongyao and recognizes that a shortage of resources has restricted his advancement. When he lacks a ship for a sect escort mission, she lends him the Everflowing Jade Cloudliner while she remains secluded. Xuanfeng later trades Suyuan Hua for Winter Cold Qi to help her breakthrough preparations. Neither assistance makes the other a subordinate; their exchanges establish a history of practical goodwill that survives the sect's changing fortunes. (Chapters 548–552 and 789)

Cold Essence attainment and an inherited sect crisis

Ning Wan's breakthrough comes after a prolonged ordeal at the Ignorance stage. Yuansu has prepared a method with Tianwan and left spirit-pill assistance, but his death deprives the Ning Family of its principal protector before she emerges. Frost extinguishes the lamp sealing her cave, allowing Ning Hemian and Li Yuanqin to enter. On the day she attains divine ability, Ning Wan confronts the empty dwelling and the deaths that occurred during her seclusion. Advancement brings responsibility and bereavement together. (Chapters 1284–1285 and 1601)

She takes the twenty-eight white banners and inherited formation plate, then goes to Si Boxiu, also known as Yuanxiu. The missing Xinyou Pristine Marsh Seal troubles her, but his explanation exposes a larger problem: Azure Pond cannot simply detach itself from Pristine Cadence Heaven. Accepting leadership means inheriting those connections as well as the sect's treasures. When his final attempt ends in catastrophe, she carries Tantai Jin away from the danger of the Metallic Essence demon. Her new cultivation gives her a chance to rescue someone, without making her capable of controlling the disaster. (Chapters 1285–1290)

The encounter with Chi Buzi, whose approach she cannot detect, further qualifies the apparent security of Clear Hearing. Among weaker petitioners, the ability exposes enough selfishness to make sect life exhausting; against stronger cultivators, its safeguards are uncertain. She turns toward Tinglan and the Supreme Yang alliance, and renews the Li connection through help for Li Xizhi. Her first response to greater authority is to seek reliable companions and fulfill inherited obligations, rather than assume that divine ability has made her independent. (Chapters 1293–1301)

Rescue becomes a durable alliance

A shift of fate toward the Northern Buddhists leaves Ning Wan and Tinglan trapped at Mount Xiaoshi. Tinglan's protection prevents Ning Wan from suffering the worst injuries, but seriously harms Tinglan herself. Li Ximing, Kuiqi, and Ling Mei help break the encirclement. Ning Wan lends Ling Mei the Frosty Absolute Sword, whose performance rises dramatically in the hands of a genuine swordsman. The rescue demonstrates how much her survival depends on allies with abilities different from her own. (Chapters 1351–1353)

She answers that debt with sustained assistance. While Tinglan recovers, Ning Wan takes over work on the Li grand formation. She also gives Ximing Yuansu's Surging Separation Treasure Leaf: its Radiant Fire nature does not suit her cultivation, whereas it is valuable to him. Her generosity is purposeful, intended to preserve an enduring relationship rather than settle the rescue with a token reward. The personal bond inherited from Chejing now acquires a new foundation in reciprocal aid between Daoist Masters. (Chapters 1353–1355)

Working with Kuiqi and Tinglan's design, she completes the thirty-two-pin Zhaoguang Profound Purple Spirit Formation and hands its control to Ximing. She explains the balance between cultivating land, securing a treasury, and defending the island instead of presenting the structure as an invulnerable wall. She sends Chu Minglian to assist, arranges mutual warnings, helps Ximing find southern contacts, and guards the lake during his absence. These choices turn a desperate rescue into a durable alliance with shared defenses and obligations. (Chapters 1355–1377)

Northern war tests the limits of protection

The collapse of the Golden Tang position and the growing strength of the Buddhists threaten the alliance's northern flank. Ning Wan helps release captives and gives Ximing a way to remove Situ restrictions, while asking that Situ Ku be spared. She also returns to check on Ximing rather than treating the Li alliance as a completed transaction. Her protective impulses extend beyond convenient allies, but require practical decisions about who can be saved and what a rescue will cost. (Chapters 1387–1401)

When the northern position becomes increasingly dangerous, she refuses to abandon it. She works with Tinglan and the allied Daoist Masters, contributes formation expertise, and recognizes that an illusion is inadequate before her Fate Divine Ability. Their defenses still depend on coordination, available troops, and stronger front-line combatants. Her anger at Yan Jianxiao's betrayal reflects the same sense of obligation: a cultivator nourished by a sect owes it more than obedience until a stronger patron appears. (Chapters 1408–1416)

The ordinary inhabitants complicate any easy distinction between victims and enemies. Ning Wan recognizes that their attachment to the Buddhist regime is sincere, rather than a spell that can simply be removed. She opposes a proposed resettlement that would endanger or destroy the people it claims to help. Preserving lives can therefore require resisting an apparently benevolent intervention. This recognition becomes especially painful when Azure Pond's own later conduct leaves it branded a devil sect. (Chapters 1413–1431)

A perfected ability cannot free her from Pristine Water

The Chi inheritance offers Ning Wan resources for future advancement. Through Lin Wuning, she receives a Moon Glazed Tree fruit that can support her perfected Clear Hearing or aid the development of a later divine ability. She distinguishes that usable gift from Supreme Yin methods she lacks the conditions to practice, and stores the fruit carefully. Such opportunities give her reasons to plan ahead, but do not amount to an attained second ability. (Chapters 1488–1489)

Suiguan's undetected arrival reveals how little that progress changes Azure Pond's dependence on Pristine Water. He takes her to Pristine Cadence Heaven, and his authority increasingly overrides her judgment. During the northern fighting she binds Helian Wumeng with her banners and reinforces a strained formation with Frosty Absolute, yet the conflict rises beyond what she can manage. She asks for relief for Tinglan and Houfu rather than pretending that persistence alone can overcome the difference in strength. (Chapters 1489–1490 and 1526–1533)

The slaughter at Turbid Slaughter Mausoleum leaves her ashamed and isolated. Acting under orders, she deceives Zhusheng and damages the trust her earlier alliances had built; afterward, her memory of Suiguan's role is itself obscured. The Ning cultivator who could hear hostile thoughts is made a participant in plans she cannot openly resist or fully retain in memory. Azure Pond acquires a devil sect's reputation, allies view her uneasily, and she retreats into seclusion. Later revelations of concealed and distributed Pristine Water karma deepen the implications of this apparent withdrawal. (Chapters 1533–1535, 1600, and 1623)

Seclusion, constrained compassion, and a narrowing escape

Seclusion gives Ning Wan a temporary shelter rather than a solution. With Yuanqin also secluded, the remaining Ning descendants struggle to manage even ordinary affairs. During an exchange within Si Yuanli's sphere, she questions a casually promised arrangement concerning Li Queyi, whose connection to Li Xuanxuan she recognizes. She also objects to the miserable treatment of former Purple Smoke disciples. Compromised by past obedience, she nevertheless continues to argue for specific people who have little power of their own. (Chapter 1601)

She understands that destroying one estate cannot end the authority behind Pristine Water. Worship can be resumed, another enlightened family can be selected, and the lineage can be rebuilt. Her account leaves little room for a decisive escape through local rebellion. She admits that her apparent retreat merely postpones decisions whose outcome will depend on Azure Pond, while the Ning Family's limited administrative capacity increases its reliance on existing arrangements. (Chapter 1601)

The family's receipt of southern Yi Mountain City territory and later accounts of Yuansu's preparations reveal the survival planning beneath that retreat. Protection and reward remain available within the hierarchy, but offer no independent route away from it. Ning Wan increasingly aims to preserve limited goods—descendants, dependable friends, and people she can still help—while the prospect of leaving every future path open becomes less credible. (Chapters 1640–1641)

Binding the Ning Family's fate to Great Song

As Great Song consolidates its authority, Ning Wan arrives at Li Zhouwei's investiture as both Azure Pond Mountain Master and a Daoist Master of the Immortal Administration Bureau. She carries the imperial decree and royal garments, using her divine ability when the edict unexpectedly becomes heavy and hot in Zhouwei's presence. Years of serving coercive powers and approaching death have left her noticeably melancholy. Her new title gives her an official place in the settlement without undoing those experiences. (Chapters 1689–1690)

Zhouwei questions her surrender of a dragon tendon from Yuansu's legacy. Ning Wan identifies it as the True Essence tendon of the White Dragon Dongfang Ai, intended for the Emperor of Song's Profound Whip of True Devotion. Once someone has exposed its nature and life-preserving use, refusing to present it will only bring someone else to seize it. She cannot explain with certainty how Yuansu obtained such a treasure, admitting that he may have acted under higher guidance. Her decision arises from an unequal struggle for survival rather than a free choice between equally safe patrons. (Chapter 1691)

Handing over the tendon deliberately closes the Ning Family's remaining path of retreat. They can no longer hope to withdraw overseas without facing the dragons, and must flourish or perish with Great Song. Ning Wan accepts that consequence as the slightest chance of survival she can secure. She continues her service after further fighting, and she and Tinglan are charged with guarding the realm. The gentle young official has become a leader who understands the price of protection and still acts to keep her dependents alive. (Chapters 1691, 1707, and 1724)

Appearance and personality

Ning Wan is repeatedly described as beautiful and youthful in appearance. As a Foundation cultivator she wears a blue dress and carries a refreshing, bitter pine scent. After her Purple Mansion breakthrough, she appears tall and slender, with long black hair, gently curved brows and eyes, and a vertical snow-white mark at the center of her forehead. Her white robes have gold embroidery at the sleeves, and she stands upon white mist as the scent of pine resin fills her cave. (Chapters 336, 432, and 1285)

Her manner is usually gentle, composed, and courteous, but she is capable of cold anger at cruelty, betrayal, and reckless conduct. Compassion coexists with an early awareness that she would choose her sect's interests in a true crisis. Clear Hearing makes the selfish thoughts of petitioners wearying, while her friendships with the Li cultivators and Tinglan give her reasons to trust particular people. Later coercion and repeated danger add melancholy to her temperament without removing her resolve to protect the Ning Family. (Chapters 163, 336, 1293, 1416, and 1689–1691)

Abilities and cultivation

Ning Wan cultivates the Cold Essence Dao through Clear Hearing and is particularly accomplished in formations. Her Fate perception, elemental manifestations, formation control, and inherited sword provide different kinds of protection; none grants her unrestricted knowledge or independence from stronger cultivators.

Clear Hearing and Cold Essence cultivation

Ning Wan first refines Pine Forest Wind and later develops the Clear Hearing immortal foundation. Her transition into Purple Mansion is supported by Yuansu's preparations and a method selected with Tianwan, but follows an unusually long ordeal at the Ignorance stage. Clear Hearing becomes her Cold Essence Fate Divine Ability and is perfected by the time she receives the Moon Glazed Tree fruit. The fruit may assist a future ability; no second attainment is established. (Chapters 48, 432, 1285–1288, 1489, and 1601)

Clear Hearing responds automatically to malicious thoughts directed toward her. Ning Wan compares this protection to a defensive spell reacting to an attack: merely approaching her does not trigger indiscriminate reading of every person's mind. It enables her to hear hostile intentions and perceive the selfishness concealed beneath polite appeals. An illusion that might satisfy another observer is inadequate before it. These uses aid both personal caution and sect governance, although discovering a person's intentions does not itself provide a way to change them. (Chapters 1293 and 1409)

The ability has significant limits. Chi Buzi conceals his approach, Suiguan arrives without her detecting him, and stronger cultivators can bypass her safeguards and interfere with her recollection. Its exact range and the extent of deliberate mind-reading are unknown. It does not make her immune to coercion or guarantee that she can detect every concealed influence; The apparent interference with her recollection of Suiguan's role in the northern disaster is a particularly consequential failure of such protection. (Chapters 1293, 1489–1490, and 1535)

Her Cold Essence mana also produces frost, snow, mist, and pine-resin manifestations. The frost of her breakthrough extinguishes the Dry Fire lamp used to seal her chamber, while later manifestations accompany movement and spellwork. Her circulation of divine ability steadies the burning imperial decree at Zhouwei's investiture. These elemental effects belong to her Dao, whereas Frosty Absolute's stored sword power and her formations' engineered defenses remain distinct. Radiant Fire is incompatible with her use of Surging Separation Treasure Leaf, explaining why she passes it to Ximing. (Chapters 1285, 1353, and 1689)

Grand formations and battlefield control

Ning Wan's formation talent is recognized before Foundation Establishment and becomes one of her principal contributions to the Supreme Yang alliance. For the Li grand formation, Tinglan supplies the design, Kuiqi contributes knowledge and mana, and Ning Wan completes and explains its installation. Thirty-two Purple Stable Valley Penetrating Mountain Profound Pins form its nodes, sixteen on Pingya Island and sixteen along the surrounding lake. Their positions and heights respond to the earth veins, producing an enclosing dome. The installation requires evacuation and replaces the old buildings and formations. (Chapters 48 and 1353–1355)

The resulting Zhaoguang Profound Purple Spirit Formation has complementary functions. Earth Anchoring stabilizes earth veins, gathers spiritual qi, and permits thirty-two distinct cultivation lands. Purple Rite draws on the island's spiritual qi and treasury reserves to form Vast Valley Purple Rite Light against enemies. Separate enclosures protect the disciples and treasury, while the formation isolates the great void. Ximing refines its control after the plate is integrated into the central pillar; it becomes a Li defense rather than Ning Wan's retained portable possession. (Chapter 1355)

These benefits involve tradeoffs. Ning Wan judges its direct defensive power as fairly standard, and explains that Tinglan's innovations have reduced some of its conventional resistance. Its operation depends on prepared components, a correct understanding of earth veins, and available reserves. Her twenty-eight inherited banners provide more mobile combat control: suspended like a furnace, they draw in blood light and demonic qi and bind Helian Wumeng. A stronger opponent can nevertheless push that formation toward failure, forcing her to supplement it with Frosty Absolute and the assistance of other combatants. (Chapters 1355 and 1526)

Frosty Absolute and inherited sword power

The Frosty Absolute Sword is a snow-white Purple Mansion spirit sword engraved with snow and Supreme Yin imagery showing autumn passing into winter. Its inherited sword power offers Ning Wan a serious additional defense, but does not establish personal attainment in Sword Aura, Sword Qi, Sword Essence, or Sword Intent. She explains that sword intent can remain within a weapon and pass between generations, making such swords a contingency for their sects. (Chapters 1352–1353)

The Mount Xiaoshi rescue makes the difference between weapon and wielder especially clear. In Ling Mei's hands, Frosty Absolute disperses the Buddhist land and injures Maha Daisi with a strike; its effect is vastly stronger than in Ning Wan's hands. Ling Mei returns it afterward, and she later draws it when Helian Wumeng threatens her banners. Those uses demonstrate valuable equipment-supported protection, while the greater rescue feat belongs to Ling Mei's sword cultivation working through the weapon. (Chapters 1352, 1356, and 1526)

Administration and alliance building

Ning Wan's competence also rests on knowledge of sect inheritances, tribute procedures, correspondence, and reciprocal aid. She arranges introductions and deploys skilled helpers when personal intervention is unnecessary or unsafe. Her work for Ximing combines formation construction, medicinal information, southern contacts, and mutual warnings, giving a practical structure to friendship. Her technical knowledge does not imply that she can practice every method she identifies; she explicitly distinguishes the Chi inheritance's unsuitable Supreme Yin techniques from resources she can use. (Chapters 46–50, 1353–1377, and 1489)

Neither technical expertise nor formal office gives her political independence. She cannot safely counter Situ You as a junior, resist Suiguan's authority, or retain the exposed dragon tendon against the Song emperor's demand. Her later leadership therefore consists partly of choosing among constrained options and securing protection for people whose survival depends on her. The Ning Family's final commitment to Great Song is the most consequential example of that work. (Chapters 163, 1535, and 1691)

Power progression

Qi Cultivation, eighth heavenly layerBy48At twenty-four, she has already reached the eighth Qi Cultivation layer, refined Pine Forest Wind, and developed formation skill.
Foundation EstablishmentBy163She attained Foundation Establishment more than a decade earlier. The exact timing and sublevel at this meeting are unknown.
Mid-stage Foundation EstablishmentBy336Her middle-stage cultivation is explicit when she rebukes Ning Heyuan; later exchanges identify Clear Hearing as her immortal foundation.
Peak Foundation EstablishmentBy548She is at the peak and approaching Purple Mansion. The later general description of prolonged late-Foundation cultivation does not establish a regression.
Purple Mansion; Clear Hearing, Cold Essence Fate Divine Ability1285 (method named1288; Ignorance passage revealed1601)Her emergence follows the snow phenomenon. Yuansu’s pill and the selected Clear Hearing method support her attainment; the prolonged Ignorance ordeal is an obstacle to breakthrough.
Clear Hearing perfected; early Purple MansionBy1489; late-state comparison1724Clear Hearing has reached perfection. The Moon Glazed Tree fruit may assist a future divine ability, but a second attainment is unknown. She remains in the early Purple Mansion stage.
