Xiao Chuting
Xiao Chuting is the powerful ancestor whose pill craft lifts his declining family into prominence and whose Purple Mansion advancement gives it independence from Azure Pond Sect. As a twelve-year-old, he wanted to free commoners from an abusive order; managing the Xiao family later taught him how readily another clan could take its place. His patience and courtesy conceal hard calculations about influence, kinship and the limits placed on Purple Mansion cultivators. When he consumes his dying brother to develop a complementary path, that calculation becomes inseparable from grief. Later, as a Grand Daoist Master of restored Pit Water, he advises younger allies that power and friendship both carry obligations they may not yet understand.
Biography
A child’s anger and a family’s survival
At twelve, Chuting hears Xiao Xianyou describe how Azure Chi Gate drains mortals, rogue cultivators and subordinate families. Chuting asks whether the old battle between immortals and demons really destroyed the celestial order, then proposes that cultivators free the people and build a different society. Xianyou takes a drink and says that such an upheaval is exactly what should happen. When Chuting realizes he has boasted too far, Xianyou offers only a smile. (Chapter 238)
After Xianyou dies and Xiao Chuchou leaves in anger, Chuting inherits a declining clan and discovers that the Xiao also “drink the people’s blood,” though less openly. He concludes that destroying his own relatives would leave space for new families to exploit people even more blatantly. Instead, his pill craft saves the household, and he manages its tribute obligations and protects the Cloud Crowned Market from robbery and forced trade. His public care for the market coexists with his decision to preserve a hierarchy he once hoped to overthrow. (Chapters 49–50, 238) At a later tribute gathering, Chuting recognizes Li Tongya as Li Chejing’s elder brother and invites him for tea. He gives Tongya Bright Spirit Powder to help him advance, reminding him that one family member’s success belongs to the whole household. The offer is warm, but it also begins a patronage that Chuting later turns into reciprocal service. (Chapter 50)
Independence and the price of patronage
Chuting possesses Purple Mansion power before he announces it publicly. Once he does, he proclaims the Xiao family’s independence from Azure Pond Sect and establishes it as a Purple Mansion clan. The new status gives his relatives greater standing, but it also subjects him to rules and scrutiny imposed by stronger Purple Mansion cultivators. He can threaten, bargain and provide indirect help; openly using his own power to kill another clan’s member would cross a line that the Azure Pond masters watch closely. (Chapters 210, 238–239, 255)
He applies that distinction when the Li family asks for help against the Yu family. Chuting acknowledges the importance of Xianyou’s footwork and supports Li Tongya, but refuses to personally kill Yu Yufeng. Instead, he uses guest cultivators and pressure to make the Yu apologize, and he requires the Li family to send a junior into Azure Pond Sect after his own informants withdraw. The arrangement protects the Li while ensuring the Xiao can still learn what happens inside the sect. His kindness to Tongya is real, but patronage brings a reciprocal duty and keeps the younger clan useful to him. (Chapters 254–256)
Complementary foundations and a brother’s sacrifice
Xianyou’s family plan assigned complementary foundations: Chuting follows Man On Creek, Chuchou Darkening Clouds, and Xianyou himself cultivated Boundless Ocean, also called Jing Dragon King. Tongya’s own Boundless Ocean matches Chuting’s path, leading Tongya to suspect a connection to Xianyou’s design; no such connection is known. Chuting’s intended further development is Sexagenary Pit Water Thousand Slow Essence, a goal distinct from his partial second foundation. (Chapters 254, 293, 295)
After Chuting and Chi Buzi kill Yu Yufeng in the sect’s political struggle, Xiao Chuchou returns old and near death. The brothers reflect on how their lives may have been arranged by Xianyou, and Chuting consumes Chuchou in a sacrificial transformation rather than let his brother’s remaining life pass without purpose. Within fifty years of his Purple Mansion breakthrough, Chuting begins developing a second immortal foundation. A later account separately describes Chuchou’s consumed essence as one of Chuting’s half-realized divine abilities; it does not say that the essence completes the second foundation. Grief and cultivation remain entangled in the act. (Chapters 295, 323, 410)
During Tongya’s trial among Purple Mansion powers, Tongya resists the assembled cultivators’ attempt to manipulate him. They suspect Chuting, who has already withdrawn his own ability; he exploits that suspicion by suggesting that a senior intervened. The claim keeps the patron’s identity unclear, while Tongya’s matching foundation remains a coincidence that arouses suspicion, not proof that he shared Xianyou’s plan. (Chapter 323)
Zhang Tianyuan later confines Chuting below the Hunyi Immortal Wall and presses him to identify the senior who helped Tongya. Chuting gives little away and recognizes Zhang’s threat to leave him trapped as a bluff: with Chen Taojing dead and the devil plague spreading toward the seven gates, Azure Pond needs him to help mobilize Foundation cultivators. He directs suspicion toward himself to shield the Li family’s hidden pawn. Zhang understands the maneuver, accuses him of targeting the Zhang family and using Azure Pond, and leaves as an enemy. Chuting returns exhausted by the contest and thinks again of the brother whose essence became part of his power. (Chapters 400, 410)
Between old debts and the Northern Sea powers
When Yuanwu confronts Daoist Master Yuan Su (Ning Tiaoxiao) over a disciple’s death, Chuting arrives beside Yuan Su and offers Yuanwu an apology on behalf of a Xiao junior, saying that the killer has already paid with their life. Yuan Su adds a promised compensation. Their words give Yuanwu a graceful exit from the immediate confrontation, though he remains suspicious and says he will return to discuss compensation. Chuting’s intervention is a diplomatic settlement, not the end of the grievance. (Chapter 615)
During a major gathering around a Purple Mansion cultivator’s attempt to reach Golden Core, other powers speculate that Chuting has gone with Yuan Xiu to Cangzhou, where the strong Pit Water offers an opportunity for his path. He later arrives at the Northern Sea with Changxi and asks Li Xuanfeng to wait while the senior cultivators depart. At Yuan Su’s passing, Chuting is among the Daoist Masters who witness the contest over the Xinyou Lucid Marsh Seal; he does not claim it. These scenes place his personal cultivation among competing lineages and show him observing how the stronger sects decide who may keep a senior’s legacy. (Chapters 711, 716, 720–721)
Guiding the next Li generation
Chuting’s concern for the Li family carries the same calculations as his earlier patronage. When Xiao Yuansi delivers a pill to the Li family before Chuting’s intended timing, Chuting tells Yuansi that he delayed the refining tasks so the pill would reach Li Zhouwei only after Li Ximing entered seclusion, because Ximing would risk a near-certain-death breakthrough with the Radiant Sky Stone and leave the treasure unavailable to Zhouwei. He feigns disappointment at Yuansi’s intervention, then privately reveals its purpose: the apparent rebuke is a probe of Zhouwei, while Yuansi’s direct lineage makes him a useful, unsuspected messenger. (Chapter 975)
After Ximing reaches Purple Mansion, Chuting receives him with the Tongming tea he once served Tongya and redirects his first visits. Ximing planned to see Tu Longjian and Changxi before Si Boxiu; Chuting warns him to visit Si first because the elder’s lifespan and political position are precarious and his sense of protocol matters. Ximing changes his plan, recognizing that courtesy toward senior cultivators can stabilize his family’s standing. (Chapters 1018–1019)
When Si Boxiu later refers the injured Ding Weizeng, Ximing initially suspects Chuting is refusing help. Chuting explains that Si Boxiu is testing whether he has mastered Holding the Ridge, whose source-dependent water can heal injuries, then points Ximing to Changxi’s treatment method. By explaining the political test as well as the art’s healing principle, he turns the referral into practical instruction. (Chapter 1051)
Pit Water restored in the Lower Luo Plains
Chuting intervenes in the struggle with Wei Xuanyin because the Xiao family owes a debt to Xiukui. Using his fishing line and Holding the Ridge, he creates steep, overlapping ridges around Wei’s drifting boat and restrains the sleeve with which Wei directs his divine ability. Wei recognizes that Chuting’s Pit Water has been restored, showing that Chuting has prepared a strength capable of affecting a Grand Daoist Master. (Chapters 1430–1431)
Wei asks which side Chuting serves, and Chuting answers that his family cannot ignore the help it once received from Xiukui. He acts to repay that debt, not because the Xiao family has entered Wei’s cause. Wei eventually breaks the restraint with radiance from his sleeve and forces the ridges apart, so Chuting changes the confrontation without defeating him. (Chapters 1430–1431)
A warning about paths that cannot be taken
At Baier Mountain, Chuting explains the history behind Cangzhou’s Pit Water. A former Grand Daoist Master’s influence once transformed the region into a land of Supreme Yang Radiant Fire, but as that fire was consumed, the enduring Pit Water returned. Even a Purple Mansion cultivator can alter a place only temporarily when a True Monarch’s Fruit Position determines its deeper nature. Chuting’s explanation shows how a True Monarch’s Fruit Position can outlast a Purple Mansion cultivator’s alteration of the land. (Chapter 1603)
Chuting then speaks candidly about cultivation paths and patronage. Some positions are effectively reserved for their established masters; others can be contested, but timing and identity may still prevent a seemingly attainable path. He warns Ximing to be careful in friendship and patronage. The advice reflects his own history: he has preserved his family through alliances and calculated obligations, but he has also seen how inheritance, debt and superior powers can narrow a cultivator’s choices. He remains alive and active in the Northern Sea in this latest account. (Chapters 1603–1604)
Appearance and personality
Chuting is introduced as an elderly Xiao family cultivator and remains composed and unhurried in later decades. He is shown in white robes with a white jade fishing rod, often at a cold pool or among the clouds above a battlefield. His calm demeanor persists even when other Purple Mansion cultivators suspect or challenge him. (Chapters 49, 323, 1430, 1603)
He is courteous, patient and protective of his family, but his kindness usually has a political purpose as well. He enforces rules at the Cloud Crowned Market, advises Tongya without promising unrestricted help, and steers the Li toward obligations that protect Xiao interests. His early concern for commoners has matured into a more guarded pragmatism; he knows that removing one ruler does not necessarily end exploitation. The sacrifice of Chuchou remains a personal grief beneath that calculation. (Chapters 50, 238, 255, 410, 1604)
Abilities and cultivation
Man On Creek and complementary foundations
Chuting cultivates the Life path through Man On Creek, deliberately paired with Xiao Chuchou’s Darkening Clouds and Xianyou’s Boundless Ocean. Tongya’s matching Boundless Ocean makes Chuting suspect a connection to Xianyou’s plan. Within fifty years of his Purple Mansion breakthrough, Chuting begins developing a second foundation. Chuchou’s consumed essence becomes one of Chuting’s half-realized divine abilities, while his second foundation remains incomplete. His intended further development is Sexagenary Pit Water Thousand Slow Essence. (Chapters 254, 293, 295, 323, 410)
Holding the Ridge and Pit Water
Holding the Ridge is a Pit Water ability whose source-dependent water can restore injuries and form constraining ridges of water and mountain. At the meeting over Ding Weizeng, Chuting explains its healing principle and recognizes Si Boxiu’s test, then directs Ximing to Changxi for treatment. In the Lower Luo Plains he uses the art to confine Wei Xuanyin’s boat until Wei’s released radiance forces the ridges apart. Chuting’s Pit Water has been restored by the time of the battle, which Wei explicitly recognizes. (Chapters 1051, 1430–1431)
Fishing-rod investigation and pill refinement
Chuting uses a white jade fishing rod to retrieve objects from pools and extend a line through the great void. He uses the rod to examine artifacts and apply Holding the Ridge at range. Before his Purple Mansion rise, his pill-refining skill also helped rescue the Xiao family from decline. He remains an influential clan elder and advisor, though his power does not let him disregard higher authorities. (Chapters 49, 295, 1430–1431, 1603–1604)

Relationships
- Xiao Xianyou: His second uncle, whose teachings first expose him to Azure Chi’s exploitation and whose later foundation plan shapes the Xiao family’s inheritance. Chuting only understands the family’s own role in that hierarchy after Xianyou dies and he must manage the clan. (Chapters 238, 293, 295)
- Xiao Chuchou: His brother and confidant, whose Darkening Clouds foundation was deliberately paired with Chuting’s Man On Creek. Chuting consumes him in a sacrificial transformation; his essence becomes a half-realized divine ability, and Chuting continues to grieve the cost. (Chapters 295, 323, 410)
- Xiao Yuansi: A junior of the Xiao family who remains devoted to the Li family. Chuting claims that he delayed Yuansi’s pill refining to protect Zhouwei’s prospects, then privately reveals that he feigned disappointment to probe Zhouwei’s position. (Chapters 954–955, 975)
- Ning Tiaoxiao (Daoist Master Yuan Su): A fellow Daoist who stands with Chuting when they offer Yuanwu a face-saving exit after a disciple’s death. (Chapter 615)

- Li Xuanfeng: A Li elder whom Chuting meets again in the Northern Sea proceedings and asks to wait while senior cultivators handle a nearby matter. (Chapter 716)
- Li Tongya: A younger ally whom Chuting supports against the Yu family while requiring the Li to return useful intelligence from Azure Pond Sect. Tongya’s matching Boundless Ocean foundation makes Chuting suspect a connection to Xianyou’s plan. (Chapters 254–256, 295)
- Li Ximing: A later-generation ally whom Chuting guides through Si Boxiu’s political test, senior visitation protocol, cultivation paths and the risks of patronage. (Chapters 1018–1019, 1051, 1603–1604)
- Zhang Tianyuan: A political rival who detains Chuting under the Hunyi Immortal Wall and presses him to name the senior who intervened for Tongya. Chuting protects the Li family’s hidden ally by drawing Zhang’s suspicion toward himself, further antagonizing him. (Chapters 400, 410)
- Wei Xuanyin: A powerful rival whom Chuting confronts because the Xiao family owes Xiukui a debt. Their struggle tests the limits of Holding the Ridge against stronger radiance. (Chapters 1430–1431)
- Xiukui: A benefactor whose earlier help binds Chuting to intervene in the Lower Luo Plains conflict. (Chapter 1430)
Items
Chuting carries a white jade fishing rod that serves his investigation and long-range use of Holding the Ridge. He also cultivates Man On Creek and uses the alchemical craft that once rescued the Xiao family. The rod and his foundations are part of his established practice rather than evidence of a separate advancement beyond the milestones above. (Chapters 49, 254, 295, 1430–1431)
