Ning Tiaoxiao

Purple Mansion Daoist Master whose cultivation stalled in the early stageAzure Pond Sect

Biography

A disillusioned elder who chose a quieter life

Ning Tiaoxiao represented the Azure Pond Sect when he congratulated Xiao Chuting on her Purple Mansion breakthrough and presented her with five western towns of Lixia. He later lived under the name Daoist Master Yuan Su. A cultivation method had prematurely checked his progress at the early Purple Mansion stage, and he had chosen a quiet life on the southern border rather than continue forcing his advancement. His experience made him a measured adviser: he explained the Li family’s descent from the Li of Wei and warned younger cultivators not to let old grievances govern them. (Chapters 239, 412–433, 580)

Final counsel and repose

After the True Monarch Shangyuan struck him, Ning Tiaoxiao’s right eye was hollow and green water poured from the wound. He said the Metallic Essence backlash had nearly turned him into spring water and that his lifespan was nearly spent. At final repose he placed the Xinyou Lucid Marsh Seal in Li Xuanfeng’s hand, urged him not to hate, and transformed into clear water that became a spring. After Ning Tiaoxiao’s death, Zipei gave the same seal to Ning Heyuan, a descendant of Yuan Su’s lineage. (Chapters 718, 720, 729)

Appearance and personality

As Yuan Su, Ning Tiaoxiao appeared round-faced and youthful, without the imposing air of an elder cultivator. He was reflective and restrained, and his final advice turned on the danger of allowing resentment to govern one’s choices. (Chapters 433, 720)

Abilities and cultivation

His encounter with Shangyuan left him severely injured; he also said that Metallic Essence backlash nearly transformed him into spring water, a risk he faced alongside his already exhausted lifespan. (Chapters 412, 718, 720)
