Si Yuanli
Si Yuanli first appears as a late-stage Foundation Establishment cultivator whose easy chatter makes him seem rash. In the Great Ning Palace, he reveals that the timidity is a mask: he is a calculating heir with years of peak cultivation and Sword Essence. He later uses that political instinct to secure the Azure Pond Sect and protect the Sima family through successive upheavals. His Purple Mansion breakthrough comes only after long preparation by his ancestor, Si Boxiu. Yuanli becomes a useful ally to Li Ximing and Li Zhouwei, but his attachment to the inherited Huai River Map makes him hesitate at a decisive moment in battle. He survives, remains politically involved and is still weighing the risks of a second divine ability. (Chapters 833–843, 881–888, 1025–1027, 1556–1560, 1642–1655, 1704–1724)
Biography
A concealed Sima mission inside Great Ning Palace
Si Yuanli enters the Great Ning Palace as a seemingly unremarkable companion to Li Xuanfeng. He is already at late Foundation Establishment, but speaks gently and at length, explaining the palace and its history while hurrying toward every apparent cache of treasure. Xuanfeng is unsure whether Yuanli is sheltered by his powerful ancestor or merely careless. Yuanli uses that assumption to conceal his real purpose: Si Boxiu sent him to retrieve an inheritance from a small hall while many Purple Mansion cultivators watch the expedition. (Chapters 833–837)
When they find a hall protected by an ancient formation, Yuanli pretends to study it idly and keeps Xuanfeng waiting until the moment he has planned. He then produces two precisely matched talismans and uses them to reverse the remaining formation aspects without triggering its destructive restrictions. Inside, he passes over the other treasures and takes the scroll from the ancestral seat, while Xuanfeng collects a jade box containing the Supreme Yang Sun Essence. Yuanli urges a quick escape, offering Xuanfeng the choice of other contents as pursuers converge. (Chapters 839–840)
Outside, Yuanli’s stance changes with his performance. He draws his sword and uses true Sword Essence against the pursuing cultivators, fighting alongside Xuanfeng rather than hiding behind him. He also accepts the jade box when Xuanfeng realizes the Sun Essence is likely Sima property and dangerous to keep. Yuanli admits that northern cultivators already know about the southern conflict and are watching his family. The expedition has secured its target, but it has also exposed the Sima inheritance and drawn the attention of enemies neither man can defeat alone. (Chapters 840–841)
Afterward Yuanli tells Xuanfeng that his family originally bore the surname Sima and was a powerful northern house, with Purple Mansion ancestors reaching back to the Zhou dynasty. The family fled south when Wei fell and settled in Jiangnan. The “Sima” inscription on the palace’s great seat confirms Xuanfeng’s inference that Yuanli had feigned ignorance to reach his ancestral hall. The family continues to be known as the Si in Azure Pond, while Yuanli later publicly resumes the Sima name. (Chapter 862; Chapter 1635)
Survival and a ruthless transfer of power
The palace’s strongest cultivators turn the expedition into a battlefield. Yuanli and Xuanfeng are badly injured by powers far beyond them; Yuanli knows that Foundation cultivators cannot escape the palace without Purple Mansion help. Xuanfeng pulls Yuanli’s bleeding lower body free from the rubble, and Yuanli’s wounds begin to close once he can circulate mana again. Even after they reach the river, two monks with artifacts that absorb sharp energy can tie him down. His Sword Essence is formidable at his realm, but does not make him safe from higher cultivation. (Chapters 843, 872)
When the riverbank survivors ask whether he will send aid to the besieged Mount Bianyan, Yuanli initially means to delay and make only a limited inquiry. Lingu Lanying’s question places him under public scrutiny. He answers that the fortified mountain should be safer than the exposed riverbank, blames the Chi family for the danger and promises to lead an investigation. The answer protects his position while making the Chi leadership carry responsibility for its own forces. He recognizes that the families and sect members around him are watching to see whether he will keep serving the Chi faction or take the chance to realign. (Chapter 881)
Yuanli’s private conclusion is harder than his public assurance: the Chi juniors at Bianyan have been deliberately caught in Si Boxiu’s larger design, and there is no room left for a neutral bargain. He resolves that shifting power rewards speed and ruthlessness. He returns the Great Ning cauldron and the recovered scroll to Si Boxiu, and learns that Chi Buzi has withdrawn from sect affairs. His ancestor points him toward the Moon Glazed Tree on Azure Pond Peak as a possible aid to Purple Mansion cultivation, giving Yuanli a personal reason to secure influence over the sect. (Chapters 881–887)
Yuanli’s grief for Xuanfeng is sincere when he arrives at Moongaze Lake after the river battle. He recognizes the loss of a cultivator who fought to protect Jiangnan, even as Xuanfeng’s death leaves the Li family weakened and the Azure Pond Sect’s older order unsettled. The mixture matters: Yuanli can feel genuine affection and still calculate how a political opening may help his family and his own advancement. (Chapter 888)
Patronage and factional maneuvering before seclusion
Yuanli builds influence inside the Azure Pond Sect by rewarding capable allies and shifting responsibility away from corrupt or unreliable officials. He praises Xuanfeng’s ability and accelerates plans for Li Xizhi to oversee Eastern Sea affairs, where the family needs a dependable defender. He targets Ning Hejing’s subordinates through misconduct investigations, but withdraws the campaign after Chi Buzi’s reappearance strengthens the Chi faction. Yuanli is not simply a caretaker for the sect: appointments, favors and outside connections strengthen the Si family’s place in the factional contest. (Chapters 916, 938)
That influence does not make his position secure. When Chi Xuxiao raises Chi Fubo’s faction, the Si lose most of their sect offices and Yuanli enters seclusion. Even while absent, he retains channels for intelligence and keeps his family’s interests in view. He values the ability of his juniors to serve under Li Jiangliang and later takes pains to protect them from the sect’s political liabilities. His network lets him bargain and gather information, but cannot prevent a stronger power from rearranging the board. (Chapters 959, 962, 1009, 1600)
Yuanli underestimates Li Ximing’s breakthrough. After Ximing enters seclusion, Yuanli calculates that the transition to Purple Mansion should take far longer than the time available and tells Li Xizhi that Ximing has probably failed. The announcement that Ximing has attained Bright Yang catches him in the middle of painting; shock ruins his work and breaks his brush. He immediately visits Xizhi to offer congratulations and reinforce ties. His mistake shows that he is politically alert but not all-knowing, and that he can change course quickly when events prove his expectations wrong. (Chapters 1016, 1025–1027)
Qinghu returns to a world his ancestor anticipated
After many years in seclusion, Yuanli emerges in the Purple Mansion Realm with his first divine ability fully realized. His ancestor’s preparations—rare methods, treasures and the Bright Truth Harmonizing Divine Pill—have supported a breakthrough that he admits he could not have achieved alone. He receives a jade pendant carrying Si Boxiu’s final words and breaks down in tears. He also recalls his ancestor’s earlier instructions to avoid Supreme Yang entanglements, remain within the mainland and protect the family. (Chapters 1556–1557)
Yuanli returns to a sect and region transformed by the years he spent away. Several old allies have vanished or entered seclusion, while the Azure Pond Sect has lost much of its former strength. He replaces the ineffective Lin Wuning with Qin Xian, sends younger Si family members away from sect offices toward the Southern Sea, and adopts the Dao title Qinghu. These choices consolidate the institution under his leadership while limiting the danger to his own family. His ancestor’s advice is a guide to survival, not a promise that he can remain outside every conflict. (Chapters 1556–1557)
He visits Li Ximing before announcing his breakthrough within the sect, bringing Si Xunhui as a bridge between their families. Ximing tests him with a story about a powerful figure noticing a painting Yuanli had made, unsettling Yuanli and reminding him that even private choices can attract attention from much stronger beings. Yuanli asks after the changing political order and negotiates a possible match for Xunhui without forcing a family arrangement. He accepts that the younger pair should decide whether they suit one another. The visit combines real respect, political probing and practical work to deepen Li–Si ties. (Chapter 1559)
The failed escape from war’s karma
Yuanli considers leaving the mainland as the Azure Pond Sect begins to break apart, but rejects the idea. He believes a family that withdraws from the political field risks losing both its standing and any protection against later retaliation. Instead, he has already arranged positions for younger relatives under the rising Yang-aligned power, while preserving the option to shelter them elsewhere. His strategy is to remain useful in the mainland’s new order rather than try to escape it. (Chapters 1599–1600)
His later dealings with Ximing rely on favors and technical knowledge as much as friendship. Yuanli helps arrange access to Zhusheng, promises that Li Quantao can be transferred to an outer-sea posting and discusses the danger surrounding Ning Wan’s lineage. He also uses his inherited pill stock and family connections to secure cultivation resources. The agreements give the Si family opportunities, but Yuanli cannot promise safety for everyone connected to the old sect or Supreme Yang order. (Chapter 1600)
When the conflict intensifies, Yuanli joins Li Zhouwei and Ximing in defending the lake. The Huai River Map helps confine Nuxiao beneath the Heaven-Venerating Gate, and Yuanli contributes information about the northern powers and their likely aims. The map is an inherited spirit treasure, not an innate divine ability. His analysis helps the Li understand why the danger is gathering, but he recognizes that the conflict’s karmic reach may also draw the Sima family into it. (Chapters 1623–1624)
Yuanli later acknowledges the Sima name publicly while congratulating Yang Zhuo on his divine ability. The old family identity becomes an open political commitment, not simply a concealed inheritance from the Great Ning Palace. Yuanli believes he can preserve his lineage by aligning with the rising court and taking part in its campaigns, but the choices increasingly bind the Sima family to powers beyond its control. His attempt to keep a safe place on the mainland does not let him remain an uninvolved observer. (Chapter 1635)
Alliance, inheritance and the Changxiao spoils
Yuanli offers Ximing a Bright Truth Harmonizing Divine Pill in exchange for borrowing the Rising Warmth Stone. He wants the stone to prepare for the Orthodox Wood divine ability Back Facing South, which he believes will benefit from the way Dry Fire disperses dampness and rain. Back Facing South remains a goal rather than an attained ability. He also shares inherited knowledge about spirit incense and the lineages that can use it, turning rare family records into leverage for the alliance. (Chapter 1642)
During the campaign against Changxiao Gate, Yuanli’s formation knowledge complements Zhouwei’s strength. After destroying the inner formation, he uses Displacement Mulberry Wood to deceive the grand formation’s plate and prevent the larger formation from destabilizing. His methods help secure the gate’s resources, which he and Zhouwei divide according to their agreement. Yuanli’s contribution is technical and material; it does not give him the ability to control the entire campaign or claim the Upper Rite inheritance as his own. (Chapters 1651, 1654–1655)
Yuanli later introduces Guo Nanwu, a cultivator of outer-sea ancestry, to Ximing and brings a partially reconstructed design for the Heavenly Rite Brilliance Spirit Formation. His family’s formation cultivators pieced together about half the design using records from Changxiao Gate. Yuanli explains that the formation can gather spiritual qi, nurture vitality and support a Dao lineage, though it is weak in direct offense. He presents the reconstructed design and the recovered formation plate to Ximing, who negotiates the exchange and hands the plate to Guo Nanwu. The arrangement gives Yuanli’s family influence while leaving him dependent on the stronger cultivators whose favor he is trying to preserve. (Chapters 1675–1676)
A hesitation that costs the alliance and a guarded aftermath
When Buddhist forces converge on Zhouwei, Yuanli joins the fighting without waiting for an imperial order. Zhouwei urgently asks him to lend the Huai River Map. Yuanli hesitates because he fears that once Bright Yang takes control, the map’s ownership could become difficult to reclaim. He fears that fate may make the loan difficult to reverse. (Chapter 1704)
Yuanli does deploy the map, unfolding it into a vast city tower to block an enemy artifact, but his pause costs Zhouwei the best opening in the battle. He continues fighting and later apologizes, calling his hesitation a grave failure. Zhouwei accepts part of the blame for asking abruptly and treats Yuanli without retaliation. Yuanli uses a Green Grace Profound Gourd to help treat Zhouwei’s injuries, another practical contribution that does not undo the battlefield consequence. (Chapters 1704, 1711)
After the battle, Yuanli guards the lake and studies the threat from the north. He arranges the capture of Zhao general Li Ju for intelligence; after Ximing subjugates the captive with Radiance Under Heaven, Yuanli examines him but detects only a faint Bright Yang trace. He admits he has not mastered a Fate Divine Ability of his own and cannot confidently awaken Li Ju. His concern shows the limit of both his current cultivation and his ability to read another power’s effects. (Chapters 1721–1723)
Appearance and personality
Yuanli first appears middle-aged, dressed in a green robe and carrying a sword. He has a gentle, chatty manner that makes him seem less guarded than he is. In the Great Ning Palace his slouch and eager interest in ordinary loot conceal the practiced cultivator beneath; when the formation opens, he straightens and moves with speed and confidence. After reaching Purple Mansion late in life, he appears older and more weathered than Ximing, usually with a sword and scroll at his side. (Chapters 833, 839–840, 1559, 1600)
He is cautious, ambitious and skilled at reading a political room. He values the Sima family’s survival, uses favors and appointments to build influence, and knows when to support a stronger faction. His affection is real: he grieves Xuanfeng and Si Boxiu without pretending. But his attachment to family treasures can compete with loyalty to allies, as the Huai River Map incident shows. He can act decisively when a factional opening demands it, yet still hesitate when the risk falls on something he considers his own. (Chapters 881, 888, 1556, 1704, 1711)
Abilities and cultivation
Orthodox Wood cultivation and inherited preparations
Yuanli cultivates the Si family’s Wesang Scripture, a rare Wood Virtue inheritance containing four ancestral secret arts. He remains at Foundation Establishment for a long time and is already at the peak by the time he reveals his skill in the Great Ning Palace. Si Boxiu deliberately delays his Purple Mansion breakthrough while asking him to refine his Dao conduct; Yuanli later suspects the delay also kept him out of a catastrophe until the ancestor’s preparations were ready. He enters Purple Mansion with his first divine ability fully realized after extended seclusion, supported by inherited methods and treasures. (Chapters 840, 887, 1556, 1600)
Yuanli’s first divine ability has no known name. After his breakthrough, Yuanli uses Orthodox Wood mana in combat and to support defensive effects, and later clears residual formation restrictions with a divine ability. Back Facing South remains a goal; he plans to cultivate it with Dry Fire and a borrowed Rising Warmth Stone. Nor has he mastered a Fate Divine Ability by his latest appearance; he remains unsure whether he can meet that path’s demands. (Chapters 1583, 1642, 1655, 1722–1723)
Sword Essence and practical combat
Yuanli’s swordsmanship is another capability he keeps hidden behind his mild demeanor. When he leaves the Great Ning Palace, his sword gathers true Sword Essence and produces elegant, powerful attacks against pursuers. He later fights at the riverbank and uses sword and mana in the larger campaigns. No personal Sword Aura, Sword Qi or Sword Intent attainment is confirmed beyond the Sword Essence he demonstrates at Foundation Establishment. (Chapters 840–841, 872)
Sword Essence makes him a dangerous opponent at his own level, but cannot overcome higher-realm divine abilities. Powerful cultivators injure him in the palace, and monks carrying bottles that absorb sharp energy can pin him down. His combat style works alongside allies: Xuanfeng’s arrows create openings, while Yuanli’s attacks occupy enemies. It does not replace the protection and leverage he gains from inherited artifacts. (Chapters 841, 843, 872)
Formation knowledge, talismans and political networks
The Great Ning mission shows how much Yuanli relies on Sima family preparation. Two talismans supplied through Si Boxiu’s plans let him reverse the remaining aspects of an ancient Supreme Yin and Supreme Yang formation, opening the ancestral hall without triggering its restrictions. Later, he uses the Deadly Thunder Formation Destroyer to break seals, but its force leaves residual restrictions that require further work. For Changxiao Gate, he destroys the inner formation and uses Displacement Mulberry Wood to deceive the grand formation’s plate, preventing the larger formation from destabilizing. These are inherited tools and technical knowledge, not a personal ability to break any formation. (Chapters 839, 1654–1655)
He also understands how information, appointments and favors work as instruments of power. Family records let him identify old lineages and match resources to allies; contacts help him arrange meetings and commission medicines. Those networks are useful but bounded: they cannot protect him from sect-level political upheaval or remove the karmic consequences attached to greater powers. His knowledge of a target’s background can guide a decision, but cannot guarantee the outcome. (Chapters 938, 1600, 1642, 1675–1677)
The Huai River Map and item-derived effects
The Huai River Map is an inherited spirit treasure recovered from the Great Ning Palace. At Si Boxiu’s instruction, Yuanli temporarily gives it to Xuanfeng during the river conflict; it returns to Boxiu by 887, and Yuanli later inherits it. It can unfold into a radiant city tower and isolate an area from outside interference. Yuanli presses it against the Heaven-Venerating Gate to help confine Nuxiao, and later uses it to block an attacking artifact. The map’s effects belong to the treasure and its current holder; they are not an innate mystic or divine ability. (Chapters 840–841, 887, 1559, 1623–1624, 1704)

- Li Zhouwei: An ally whose strength complements Yuanli’s knowledge and artifacts. Their cooperation survives the Huai River Map incident, though Zhouwei makes clear that Yuanli’s hesitation cost him a battle opportunity. (Chapters 1654–1655, 1704, 1711)
- Si Yuanbai: Yuanli’s elder brother, whose principled opposition to Chi Wei led Si Boxiu to keep him apart from the family. Yuanli once hoped to bring him back into the Sima line. (Chapters 833, 887)
- Si Xunhui and Si Tongyi: Younger family members whom Yuanli protects from dangerous sect appointments. Xunhui also helps build connections between the Si and Li families through his ties to Xizhi. (Chapters 1556–1559, 1600)
- Ning Wan and Tinglan: Former ties to the Supreme Yang lineage that have grown distant as Yuanli separates the Sima family from it. He remains troubled by Ning Wan’s disappearance and by the harm coming to old associates, but has limited freedom to intervene. (Chapters 1556, 1600, 1723–1724)

Items
- Huai River Map: Yuanli recovers the map from the Great Ning Palace. At Si Boxiu’s instruction, he temporarily lends it to Xuanfeng during the river conflict; it returns to Boxiu by 887 before Yuanli later inherits it. He uses it to confine Nuxiao and block an enemy artifact, then hesitates before lending it to Zhouwei because he fears losing control of it. (Chapters 840–841, 887, 1559, 1623–1624, 1704)
- Great Ning bronze cauldron: Yuanli retrieves the cauldron from the palace and refines it to a smaller size before returning it to Si Boxiu. It is family inheritance delivered to his ancestor, not a permanent personal possession. (Chapters 835, 887)
- Bright Truth Harmonizing Divine Pill and Rising Warmth Stone: He draws on the Sima family’s inherited pill resources and trades a pill to borrow Ximing’s stone for Back Facing South. The ability remains a goal, and the stone remains a loan. (Chapters 1556, 1642)
- Empty Sleeve Profound Dao Powder: Yuanli commissions the medicine from Li Ximing using Hollowheart Profound Mulberry. He values its ability to aid spirit and Immortal Foundation cultivation and renews the request later; it supports his training but does not mark a realm breakthrough. (Chapters 1600, 1607, 1723)
- Changxiao spoils: Yuanli keeps the Majestic Blossom Pearl for a senior, gives the Hundred-Ridge Profound Stone Umbrella to Zhouwei, and receives a Radiant Essence spirit material in the agreed division of Chengyan’s belongings. His selection reflects the material’s use for Orthodox Wood; it does not turn the entire cache into his property. (Chapter 1654)
- Formation tools: The Deadly Thunder Formation Destroyer breaks the inner seal but leaves residual restrictions, while Displacement Mulberry Wood deceives the formation plate during the Changxiao operation. These are tools used for specific tasks, not innate abilities. (Chapters 1654–1655)
- Healing water and gourds: Yuanli draws pale gray Valley Water from a gourd and applies Azure Blaze Pure Essence to Zhouwei’s fire wounds. After the later northern battle, he brings out the Green Grace Profound Gourd to treat Zhouwei again. These are item or stored-material effects, not personal Valley Water cultivation. (Chapters 1623, 1711)
