Chi Buzi
Chi Buzi is a gifted Chi family cultivator whose early mastery of the Pristine Water path gives him authority in the Azure Pond Sect and the confidence to use weaker people as tools. He searches the Li family for Supreme Yin Moonlight, but his interrogation of Li Yuanjiao gives Lu Jiangxian an opening to enter his soul. Lu restrains Buzi and implants a Jinlian-derived fragment with false memories of an Immortal Court official called Dangjiang. Buzi later mistakes assimilation for victory, gains Chougui Hidden Form, and bargains with the same hidden power that still holds leverage over him. His latest aim is a Mansion Water path around the advancement Pristine Water controls. He has four abilities and several conditional patrons, but has not attained Golden Core or completed his new path. (Chapters 247, 401–407, 725–727, 850–851, 1135–1140, 1715–1720)
Biography
An inherited path and an appetite for forbidden moonlight
Buzi’s cultivation began unusually early: his spiritual orifice opened while he was young, and Chi Wei taught him through the doctrine of Fruition Attainment. Later, Buzi recognized that his teacher had used those teachings to justify consuming Li Chejing himself. That history helps explain his resentment toward Pristine Water’s incomplete inheritance, but it does not make him reject the Chi order’s exploitation of outsiders. He admires power and believes that the path to it matters more than the people harmed along the way. (Chapter 850)
By his first appearance he is already a Purple Mansion Daoist Master. He uses coercive questioning and a bewitching divine ability against Li Xizhi, then follows the evidence toward Li Yuanjiao and the Supreme Yin Moonlight once associated with Li Chejing. Rather than accept the Li family’s secrecy, he seeks to take the inheritance for himself. Li Yuanjiao’s resistance leads Buzi to use a heart-questioning spell, bringing him into contact with the hidden mirror power that he cannot identify or control. A later account clarifies that Heavy Murk was his breakthrough ability, followed by Spring’s Echo and Clear Dusk Rain within a century; the dates of those early attainments remain unknown. (Chapters 247, 394, 401–402, 847)
The soul search that makes the predator a prisoner
Buzi’s heart-questioning spell has served him reliably, and he expects Li Yuanjiao’s memories to reveal the family’s secrets. The Li’s talisman seed instead connects Yuanjiao’s consciousness to Lu Jiangxian and the Immortal Mirror. Lu enters Buzi’s sea of consciousness through that opening, overwhelms him, and reads Buzi’s own memories. The reversal leaves Buzi physically damaged, including his eyes, and turns his own intelligence-gathering method into a vulnerability. (Chapters 402–405, 407)
Lu cannot simply kill Buzi without risking Pristine Water’s notice, so he installs a destructive shamanic restriction and links it to a purified fragment of Maha Jinlian. The fragment receives fabricated memories of immortals and courts and emerges as the self-styled official Dangjiang. Buzi leaves after bargaining for what he thinks may be a route to higher cultivation; he reconstructs his eyes from mud through a divine ability, but Lu can still perceive and read his thoughts through the imposed soul link. Dangjiang’s supposed office is a manufactured identity, not evidence that Buzi or the fragment once held a real Water Mansion appointment. (Chapters 406–407)
A fourth ability and the discovery that Dangjiang survives
For years, Buzi struggles against the fragment inside him while trying to benefit from its talisman qi. By chapter 725 he believes he has devoured Dangjiang and presents the result to Li Qinghong as a fourth divine ability, Chougui Hidden Form. He also tries to negotiate with the Li’s concealed patron for a Golden Core position, saying he could serve as a useful blade. His apparent composure masks fear: once away from Qinghong, his hands tremble as he weighs the risk of bargaining with a True Monarch or immortal. Lu later confirms that the fragment’s radiance has not disappeared, so Buzi’s claim of victory is premature. (Chapters 725–727)
The truth becomes impossible to ignore during the staged audience in Anhuai Heaven. When Buzi asks the figure he believes to be Yingze for guidance, Dangjiang takes control of Buzi’s body; Buzi realizes that the official survived and had been contesting him from within. He still turns the humiliation into another bargain, accepting the Heavenly Glyph Bright Profound Sacrificial Method and a conditional channel to the hidden realm. Buzi and Si Boxiu destroy nearby texts to conceal the method’s source. He has advanced to four abilities, but the soul restriction remains, Dangjiang survives, and the identity Buzi assigns to Lu is not confirmed fact. (Chapters 847, 850–851)
Captives as currency and a choice against the fifth Pristine ability
The sacrificial method gives Buzi access to a hidden audience only when he can provide a suitable offering and earn the right to return. He spends years trapping a Purple Mansion spirit sparrow: first baiting it toward his seclusion ground, then keeping it confined while strengthening the formation. Chougui Hidden Form distorts the scale of the trap, while his artifact and divine abilities help hold the captive. Buzi treats the creature as payment for advancement, not as an ally, and patiently waits until it can no longer escape. (Chapters 1135–1136)
When the sparrow’s Lesser Yin cold-dry fire resists his rain, Buzi recognizes the gap in his Pristine Water set: Purifying Dew would be the ideal counter, but he has not obtained it. The hidden audience explains that completing the fifth Pristine ability could expose him to the lord who controls that path. Buzi therefore considers Mansion Water as an alternative, and Zhen’gao outlines how Morning Cold Rain could connect to his existing abilities. Buzi continues capturing valuable creatures, including a peacock, for further consultations. The choice is still a gamble between powerful patrons; it does not mean he has attained the fifth ability or escaped Pristine Water’s influence. (Chapters 1136–1140, 1223–1225)
A safer foundation, sect secrets and the problem of memory
Buzi’s new cultivation plan creates a different danger: if Pristine Water searches his soul, the hidden realm and its forbidden techniques could be exposed. He questions Ning Wan about a lost Feathered Serpent seal but leaves her alive for strategic reasons, expecting that her presence may draw Du Qing’s attention away from him. He then works through Dangjiang and Chunyi to obtain the complete Chougui Water-Seeking Method, giving an externally recognized basis for an ability he had first gained through talisman resonance. When the Supreme Circuit Spirit Mirror examines him, his Fate ability repeatedly warns him of danger. (Chapters 1289–1290, 1382)
Buzi bargains with a rare branch of Supreme Yin laurel for a revised Mansion Water method and a way to control what a soul-searcher could find. He receives the Morning Rain Clear Cloud Technique, the Borrowed World Heart-Binding Shamanic Art and the Dao-Encouraging Yin-Soul Profound Blade. The art can strip and store memories, while the blade can hold what is removed; their arrangement would let Lu control the hidden memories outside Buzi’s soul. Buzi receives these tools, but does not complete a memory-removal or restoration. His apparent acceptance of the method gives him another option while keeping its most important safeguard in someone else’s hands. (Chapters 1457, 1461–1462)
The seal that opens a path while tightening the net
Wei Xuanyin gives Buzi the Xinyou Pristine Marsh Seal, an old Feathered Serpent artifact tied to Metallic Essence and recognition from the Pavilion of Profound Order and Mount Luoxia. The seal may provide political shelter and access to future opportunities, but it does not grant Buzi a Golden Core position. He accepts the protection while continuing to conceal his motives and assess whether any patron can be trusted. (Chapter 1549)
Buzi later enters the Wanlin struggle with Chougui Hidden Form and strikes Daisi while seeming to remain motionless. He also takes the gains Si Yuanli recovered and forces Yuanli to disclose the location of Spring Branches. The episode shows that Buzi has moved from being the target of a hidden soul trap to exploiting weaker parties in his own bargains; survival has not made him benevolent. His new allies and the seal increase his leverage, but his information and advancement remain entangled with other powers’ plans. (Chapter 1584)
Mansion Water, the turtle’s horns and a borrowed patron
Buzi’s latest strategy is to cultivate Morning Cold Rain and pursue a Mansion Water Intercalary Position, because he believes it may let him advance without completing the Pristine Water path. He admits the new method is slow. To improve its prospects, he bargains with Zeng Zan for a pair of the turtle elder’s shed horns, intending to grind them into yearly decoctions. Buzi threatens eventual revenge rather than offering a convincing promise of help, then probes whether he might take more by force. Zeng Zan’s own horns remain intact, and Buzi withdraws when he sees the elder is not helpless. The shed pair is material for future cultivation, not proof Buzi has consumed it or mastered Morning Cold Rain. (Chapters 1715–1716)
When Dongfang Dingjiao visits, Buzi tries to present himself as backed by a stronger patron. He assumes Dingjiao’s references to Lord Xuan’an confirm a relationship with the hidden figure behind his laurel branch, but that conclusion is an inference, not an established identity or alliance. Dingjiao asks him to act as a concealed trump card in Jiangbei; Buzi weighs the offer while suspecting that the dragons and Pristine Water may both understand how uncertain his path is. He remains a late Purple Mansion cultivator with four abilities, holding the Pristine Marsh Seal and developing an unmastered Mansion Water technique; neither Golden Core nor a fifth ability is confirmed. (Chapters 1716, 1719–1720)
Appearance and personality
Buzi has pale cyan eyes and a refined, handsome appearance that supports the immortal composure he performs in conversation. After Lu damages his eyes, he uses mud as a temporary substitute and restores their appearance through a divine ability. His calm exterior does not signal trust or restraint: he is observant, proud of his education, and comfortable using deception, coercion or force when they advance his cultivation. (Chapters 407, 725, 1716)
He resents Pristine Water for withholding what he believes is the knowledge needed to advance, yet he benefited from family privilege and does not object to exploiting people with less power. He can patiently wait years to trap an opponent, bargain with an elder, then openly threaten revenge if the deal fails. His fear of superior powers makes him strategic rather than repentant; even apparent respect for a patron is part of how he tries to survive and gain leverage. (Chapters 850, 1135–1136, 1716)
Abilities and cultivation
Pristine Water cultivation and four divine abilities
Buzi’s spiritual orifice opened early, and Chi Wei introduced him to Fruition Attainment. He had reached Purple Mansion by the time he first appears and was a mid-stage cultivator with three abilities by chapter 401. A later retrospective establishes the sequence: Heavy Murk formed his Purple Mansion breakthrough, then he cultivated Spring’s Echo and Clear Dusk Rain in under a century. The exact dates of those three achievements are not stated. He adds Chougui Hidden Form as his fourth ability by chapter 725, but this does not complete the orthodox Pristine Water set or establish Golden Core. (Chapters 247, 401, 847)
Heavy Murk is also described as a Fate divine ability. It produces gray mists that, together with a Pristine Water spirit artifact, shroud a broad stretch of sky and sea and turn the environment into a rain-filled enclosure. Its earth-control aspect lets Buzi condense a physical cave dwelling. Clear Dusk Rain is the ability that briefly suppresses the spirit sparrow’s flames; the cold-dry fire surges again during the downpour. Buzi says Purifying Dew would be the ideal counter, but he has not obtained it. He still has four abilities in his latest appearance and is pursuing another path rather than claiming the Pristine fifth. (Chapters 1136, 1140, 1715–1716)
Spring’s Echo and combined water defense
Spring’s Echo is a combined Life and Body divine ability. When the spirit sparrow unleashes her deep-white light, Buzi transforms his body into flowing spring water and merges with a cauldron, resisting her attack for a time. After roughly fifteen minutes, her attack overturns the cauldron, but his spring water presses the deep-white light down and the vessel descends again to renew the suppression. This use shows a bodily transformation distinct from Heavy Murk’s shrouding mist and Clear Dusk Rain’s temporary suppression of flame. (Chapter 1136)
Chougui Hidden Form
Buzi’s fourth ability develops when he assimilates the talisman qi attached to Dangjiang. He already had the Chougui foundation and an Immortal Foundation cultivated without the complete Purple Mansion method; the resonance activates the ability before he acquires the orthodox Chougui Water-Seeking Method from Chunyi. Its concealment hides dharmas and distorts how observers perceive his position and the size of a formation. The ability can make his movement or a close-range strike difficult to register, but it does not make him invulnerable to higher powers or remove Lu’s soul restriction. (Chapters 725, 1139, 1382)
He uses the distortion to conceal a capture formation from a Purple Mansion creature and later approaches Ning Wan and Daisi without being perceived in time to prevent his actions. Its usefulness depends on positioning, preparation and a target entering a trap or coming within reach; against a greater spirit treasure or a direct True Monarch investigation, concealment is not a guarantee of safety. By the Wanlin episode he is exceptionally practiced, while his realm and four-ability set remain unchanged. (Chapters 1135, 1290, 1584)
Heart questioning and the imposed soul restriction
Buzi’s Yin Quarters Nine Hills Heart Questioning Spell lets his spiritual sense enter another person’s sea of consciousness and bring memories to the surface. He uses it successfully on Li Yuanjiao, but the connection also lets Lu reach Buzi through the linked talisman seed and mirror. Lu overwhelms his consciousness, installs a destructive restriction and makes him subject to remote observation. The technique is therefore an effective tool for coercive intelligence, not protection against another cultivator who can exploit the same mental link. (Chapters 402–407)
Lu also attaches a purified fragment of Maha Jinlian with fabricated Immortal Court memories, from which Dangjiang’s apparent identity develops. Buzi’s claim to have devoured the official gives him Chougui Hidden Form, but Lu’s later staging proves that Dangjiang survived. Buzi’s agency remains contested: the imposed restriction can punish him, and Lu can observe his thoughts. Buzi can repair his damaged eyes with mud and a divine ability, but that bodily recovery does not free his soul. (Chapters 406–407, 725–727, 850)
Heavenly Glyph Bright Profound Sacrificial Method
Lu gives Buzi this method during the staged Anhuai audience. With a formation, prayer and suitable offerings, Buzi can communicate with the hidden realm and receive guidance or techniques. The method permits actual bodily entry for the first visit, but Dangjiang later explains that an ordinary return visit can only project Buzi’s consciousness; merit and access are recorded through a command token. His later offerings of powerful creatures show that the arrangement has practical consequences, but it is a conditional channel managed by Lu and Dangjiang, not an independent Immortal Court office or an Immortal or Golden Core advancement. (Chapters 851, 1138–1140, 1222–1225)
Mansion Water cultivation and memory management
Buzi pursues Morning Cold Rain as a possible fifth ability connected to Mansion Water. Its proposed relationship to his existing Pristine Water abilities offers a route around the path controlled by Pristine Water, but the method is compatible rather than exceptionally powerful and Buzi says his progress is slow. The Morning Rain Clear Cloud Technique supplies a revised foundation; the shed turtle horns are intended to support decoctions that may improve his Mansion Water affinity. He has not demonstrated mastery, a fifth ability, an Intercalary Position or a Golden Core breakthrough. (Chapters 1223, 1461, 1715–1716)
The Borrowed World Heart-Binding Shamanic Art and Dao-Encouraging Yin-Soul Profound Blade are meant to let memories be removed from Buzi’s soul and stored in the blade, reducing what a future soul search could expose. After receiving the tools, Buzi entrusts them to Dangjiang until he reaches the formation; a later retrieval is not shown. The arrangement could protect Buzi from one danger by giving others power over what he remembers. His receipt of the art and blade is confirmed; the extent of any later memory removal or restoration is not. (Chapters 1461–1462, 1584)

Relationships
- Lu Jiangxian: A hidden patron who can read Buzi’s thoughts through an imposed soul restriction, implanted Dangjiang, and later supplied methods and conditional access. Buzi believes he recognizes Lu as Yingze, but the novel does not confirm that identification. (Chapters 403–407, 850–851, 1461–1462)
- Dangjiang: A Jinlian-derived fragment with fabricated memories that first shares Buzi’s body and later takes control of it while speaking as a separate identity. Buzi’s belief that he devoured Dangjiang is disproved; years of conflict turn into a grudging, opportunistic partnership. (Chapters 406–407, 725–727, 850, 1138)
- Li Yuanjiao, Li Xizhi and Li Qinghong: The Li family members he questions or threatens while hunting Supreme Yin Moonlight. Qinghong later becomes an intermediary to the hidden power he hopes to use, although she does not control the patron he is addressing. (Chapters 394, 401–407, 725)
- Chi Fubo and Pristine Water: Buzi’s family and sect inheritances give him an early advantage, but he resents the incomplete path controlled by Pristine Water. He seeks another route without renouncing the same coercive methods he used against outsiders. (Chapters 850, 1136–1140, 1715)
- Ning Wan: A former junior he intimidates and keeps alive as a diversion for Du Qing. His decision protects his own plans, not Ning Wan from the wider conflict. (Chapters 1289–1290)
- Fuxuan, Wei Xuanyin and Dongfang Dingjiao: Negotiating partners who provide a Chougui method, the Pristine Marsh Seal and a possible political role. Their offers create useful shelter while leaving Buzi unsure who truly stands behind the opportunities. (Chapters 1382, 1549, 1719–1720)
- Si Boxiu and Si Yuanli: Boxiu helps conceal the source of Buzi’s sacrificial method in Anhuai; Yuanli later becomes a target when Buzi takes his recovered gains and extracts formation knowledge. (Chapters 851, 1584)
Items
- Xinyou Pristine Marsh Seal: Accepted from Wei Xuanyin and still treated as in Buzi’s hands in the latest account. It offers political recognition and access to Metallic Essence-related opportunities, not a Golden Core breakthrough. (Chapters 1549, 1720)
- Profound Supreme Yin White Laurel Branch: An offering from the hidden realm that Buzi uses in bargaining over his revised Mansion Water method. Later dragon testimony says the branch was placed in Chunyi’s hands; that account does not establish Lord Xuan’an as Buzi’s patron. (Chapters 1140, 1457, 1720)
- Dao-Encouraging Yin-Soul Profound Blade: Received with the Borrowed World Heart-Binding Shamanic Art as a possible vessel for removed memories, then entrusted to Dangjiang until Buzi reaches the formation. Later retrieval or use for memory storage is not confirmed. (Chapters 1461–1462)
- Profound Softshell Turtle horns: The pair he obtains from Zeng Zan are shed horns intended for future decoctions, not the elder’s living horns. Dingjiao later attributes the grant through Zeng Zan to Guang Fou. (Chapters 1716, 1720)
- Rain-Viewing Precious Cauldron: Buzi displays a named cauldron among his artifacts; whether it is the same green cauldron shown later is unclear. (Chapters 1382, 1716)
