Tinglan
Tinglan is an outsider who rises to govern the Purple Smoke Blessed Land through a combination of formation expertise, institutional inheritance and careful alliances. Born with the surname Yi in Bo Lie Prefecture, she reaches Purple Mansion under Daoist Master Zipei’s guidance. She bargains with Li Ximing as a capable peer, later gains control of the blessed land’s grand formation, and defends her allies with the Purple Throne Serene Spirit Pavilion and Boundless Water-Fire. Her loyalty can be brave, but it also binds her to the consequences of political settlements she helped create. After two serious injuries, she remains an early Purple Mansion cultivator; the later damage to her divine-ability foundation remains unresolved through Chapter 1726. (Chapters 1121–1122, 1276–1281, 1306, 1352, 1420, 1518, 1724–1726)
Biography
A northern outsider makes a reciprocal alliance
When Tinglan first meets Ximing, she explains that she is Yi by birth, a former rogue formation master from Bo Lie Prefecture who attained divine abilities under Zipei in the blessed land. She appears in an autumn-yellow gown embroidered with butterflies, markedly unlike the Purple Smoke Gate’s usual purple robes. Her position does not make her self-sufficient: she needs a high-grade pill, while Ximing needs a formation. She offers an exchange and explains that a grand formation requires suitable materials, a sound foundation and an expert able to work with it. (Chapters 1121–1122)
Ximing is cautious about her convenient return after Changxi’s fall, and Tinglan does not ask him to accept her on rank alone. She distinguishes herself from the Kan and Gao lineages, describes her practical limits as a divine-ability cultivator who has not trained in alchemy, and answers his questions directly. Their alliance grows from complementary skills: her formation knowledge and institutional access meet his unusual ability to refine pills. (Chapters 1121–1122)
Territorial bargaining and the shelter of a dangerous friend
The collapse of Profound Peak leadership leaves its land and succession open to dispute. Tinglan works with Ye Hui and Sword Gate to secure an arrangement for the mountain gate’s return and the Li family’s withdrawal. The settlement offers the Li family room to maneuver while placing the gate under useful allied authority. Tinglan’s calculations also account for the possibility that a nearby Purple cultivator could become a future threat and for Ye Hui’s intolerance of such a danger. (Chapters 1131–1133, 1192, 1204)
Zhugong’s place in the settlement later complicates what initially appears to be a strategic success. Tinglan supports her as an ally and arranges orthodox protection through Zhugong’s role, but this does not guarantee kind treatment for the former Profound Peak disciples. Tinglan’s own interests, the Li family’s safety and the survivors’ welfare do not always point in the same direction. (Chapters 1132–1133, 1158–1159, 1204, 1518)
Outer-sea medicine, gifts and uncomfortable truths
The promised medicine remains unfinished, so Tinglan seeks Ximing in the outer sea. She supplies Boundless Water-Fire and Heavenly Origin Essence, lends the Profound Owl Crossing Scene Furnace for his work, and arranges the other resources he needs. Ximing returns the borrowed furnace after refining her pill. He refines six pills, gives Tinglan four and retains two; she gives him the Treasure-Elephant Furnace in return. The exchange is generous, but still rests on explicit debts and valuable expertise rather than effortless trust. (Chapters 1276–1279, 1281)
Their work also gives them room to discuss the history and identities surrounding Profound Peak. Tinglan acknowledges that Ximing’s alchemy exceeds her own and that her special cultivation makes high-grade pill refinement dangerous to her Shenyang balance. She becomes more candid and personally embarrassed by the uncertainty and risk around her earlier arrangements, while remaining a careful ally rather than a source of infallible knowledge about fate. (Chapters 1122, 1277–1281)
Inherited authority and stewardship in Jiangbei
When Zimu leaves the gate’s future unsettled, Tinglan assumes greater responsibility for Purple Smoke’s inheritance. For years she has been able to open and close the blessed land’s grand formation, but not truly command it. The Purple Essence Immortal Origin Profound Canopy grants the formation’s recognition and control of the Radiant Purple Profound Illumination Grand Formation. This is a major gain in access and authority, not a new cultivation realm. (Chapters 1292–1306)
Tinglan also receives Qiushui’s Thunder Palace mirror and coordinates formation work with Ning Wan. When Cui Jueyin escorts Chen Yang and Fei Tongcai back, Li Jiangqian requests Tinglan’s help. She uses paper-shaped eyes to help Chen Yang recover. Tinglan has not attained a Fate Divine Ability, and she cannot save Fei Tongcai, whose original mind has been annihilated. Her remedy is a precise workaround for one injury, not a general power to restore minds or reverse the True Monarch’s influence. (Chapters 1306–1307, 1316)
Entrapment, injury and a divided shadow
Northern Buddhist forces trap Tinglan and Ning Wan in the Huixu Demon Subduing Grand Formation despite the defenses of the Purple Throne Serene Spirit Pavilion. A collective effort involving Ximing, Kuiqi, Ling Mei and other allies frees them. Tinglan leaves the formation work in Ning Wan’s hands and withdraws to recover. The ordeal damages her Purple Essence dharma body; she later explains that she must refine again the Immortal Foundation within her qihai and carefully restore her body. (Chapters 1352, 1415)
While her true body heals, Tinglan uses the Migration Command Token to project a divided shadow from a distance. The projection can read and handle gate affairs but has no offensive power, and it does not let her injured body cultivate. She also shares with Ximing the pill’s administration method, repaying his help with knowledge she could otherwise keep to herself. This remote presence sustains the institution without pretending that she has recovered. (Chapters 1362, 1415)
Recovery and a northern counteroffensive
After years in seclusion, Tinglan looks well enough to resume public work, though she says that she still needs more days to recover. She uses Boundless Water-Fire in counterattacks and works with Ning Wan on changes to the formations. She exchanges the method Radiance Under Heaven for resources from Ximing, who is seeking knowledge related to the Fate art. Tinglan warns him about the preparation that path demands rather than claiming the method as her own attainment. Chapter 1420 explicitly describes her as recovered before the defense at Mount Xiaoshi. (Chapters 1410, 1414–1416, 1420)
At Mount Xiaoshi, Tinglan and the Purple Throne Serene Spirit Pavilion withstand five Merciful Ones. Five sealed strands of Purple Essence anchor the treasure’s defense; they belong to the Pavilion and do not represent five divine abilities Tinglan personally attained. Even so, their local resistance cannot prevent the wider coalition’s defeat. Kuiqi’s death and the loss of strategic position force the allies to withdraw, showing the limit of a powerful defensive treasure when the war turns against the whole coalition. (Chapters 1420, 1427, 1449)
Loyalty to Zhugong meets the consequences of patronage
Tinglan’s personal loyalty to Zhugong becomes costly when she suffers a delayed Veiled Yin injury. While others hesitate to enter another dangerous affair, Tinglan supports Zhouwei diplomatically and seeks help from Shanbai and Ximing to stabilize Zhugong. Her resolve is sincere; she is willing to risk her life for a friend. (Chapters 1506–1509)
The return of Kong Tingyun and the complaints about former Profound Peak dependents make the other side of her earlier political choices harder to ignore. Tinglan cannot honestly answer the survivors’ reported suffering with hypothetical claims that the settlement might have been worse under another ruler. She is left isolated and bitter, while the survivors credit Ximing’s compassion. Her loyalty remains admirable, but it does not erase the harm suffered under an arrangement she helped sponsor. (Chapter 1518)
An injured mountain master learns to bow
After a later defeat, Tinglan’s body and soul are injured again while she retrieves the sealed Pavilion from Ch’i Lanyan’s Clearcliff Brilliant Branch. By 1724, she explains that the Majestic Earth punishment has damaged her divine-ability foundation and that the wound has persisted despite the years since the battle. She is still only an early Purple Mansion cultivator, even though her techniques and treasure can let her hold off a mid-stage opponent. (Chapters 1688, 1724)
As imperial authority reshapes the balance of power, Tinglan chooses the gate’s survival over inherited pride. She explains Zimu’s waiting condition to Wenqing, accepts imperial command, enters the Immortal Administration Bureau while retaining her mountain leadership, and asks Ximing for help with the lingering injury. He sends medicine by Chapter 1726; whether Tinglan recovers remains unknown. She bends politically to preserve the gate and its juniors, without giving up the personal obligations that made her an ally in the first place. (Chapters 1688, 1724–1726)
Appearance and personality
Tinglan’s first appearance is distinctive: an autumn-yellow silk gown embroidered with vivid butterflies, delicate features, slender brows and cyan at the corners of her eyes. Later, she wears purple robes for formal occasions. Her manner is usually gentle and courteous, and she prefers to explain limits and obligations plainly. When a friend is in danger, the softness gives way to visible resolve; when confronted with the consequences of her own policy, she does not find a satisfying excuse. (Chapters 1121, 1507, 1518)
She combines patience and calculation. Tinglan can negotiate territory, medicine and formations without confusing a title with independence, and she understands when to give an ally room or when to ask for help. Her political judgment is not morally flawless: she can defend an arrangement as useful to the coalition while underestimating what it costs people placed beneath it. Her personal loyalty is real, but so are the consequences of using patronage as a political shield. (Chapters 1132, 1276–1281, 1518)
Abilities and cultivation
Purple Essence cultivation and spell arts
Tinglan cultivated divine abilities in the Purple Smoke Blessed Land under Zipei and attained Purple Mansion before her introduction. The cited chapters do not name her personal foundational ability. She can travel through the great void, shape spell arts and fight Purple Mansion opponents, but there is no verified sequence of individually numbered divine abilities or dated lower-realm stages for her. She remains at early Purple Mansion in Chapter 1724. (Chapters 1121, 1724)
Her cultivation also places limits on her work. Because refining high-grade pills with divine abilities can disturb the balance of her Shenyang Mansion, she trades with cultivators who have trained in alchemy rather than attempting such refinement herself. Later injuries can damage her dharma body and divine-ability foundation without establishing a loss of her Purple Mansion realm. (Chapters 1122, 1352, 1415, 1724)
Formation mastery and the blessed-land grand formation
Tinglan’s original expertise is formation design and operation. She understands how a grand formation depends on materials, a foundation and a skilled practitioner, adapts its layout and coordinates defensive changes. The Purple Essence Immortal Origin Profound Canopy earns her the Radiant Purple Profound Illumination Grand Formation’s recognition and genuine control, expanding her earlier ability merely to open or close access. She works with Ning Wan on wartime formations and can maintain them while under pressure, but she does not claim to build every Purple formation independently. (Chapters 1121, 1306, 1352, 1414)
Defensive treasures and Boundless Water-Fire
The Purple Throne Serene Spirit Pavilion is Purple Smoke’s inherited defensive treasure. Five Purple Essence strands are sealed inside as its foundation, letting it anchor a region and sustain powerful defenses. It can suppress Tinglan’s injuries temporarily and help her hold off stronger attackers, but it cannot prevent entrapment or save the larger coalition from defeat. (Chapters 1352, 1427, 1724)
Tinglan also uses Boundless Water-Fire, a spiritual flame she lends Ximing for his pill work and later uses in battle. Its interaction with other spiritual energy makes it valuable for counterattacks; its alchemical use depends on Ximing’s unusual control, not on it being a universally suitable refining flame. After the great True Essence transformation, Tinglan says its power has increased. (Chapters 1277, 1410, 1724)
Healing, diagnosis and the divided shadow
Tinglan can use paper-shaped replacements for Chen Yang’s destroyed eyes, but she has not attained a Fate Divine Ability. She recognizes when Fei Tongcai’s original mind has been erased and does not mistake an apparent personality for a restored person. Her knowledge and intervention have limits: they cannot reverse every injury caused by the True Monarch. (Chapter 1316)
The Migration Command Token projects a divided shadow while the great void remains unbroken, allowing Tinglan to read and administer affairs from a distance of up to fifty kilometers. The shadow has no offensive power and does not let her injured true body cultivate. It is an inherited artifact’s function, not a new personal cultivation stage. (Chapter 1362)
Power progression

Items and inherited formations
Tinglan’s important equipment is tied to Purple Smoke’s inheritance and does not add personal divine abilities. The Purple Essence Immortal Origin Profound Canopy grants recognition by the Radiant Purple Profound Illumination Grand Formation. The Purple Throne Serene Spirit Pavilion provides regional defense and contains five sealed Purple Essence strands. Boundless Water-Fire is a combat resource she also lends for pill refinement; the Migration Command Token permits a limited remote shadow. None of these artifacts makes her early Purple Mansion cultivation a higher stage. (Chapters 1277, 1306, 1362, 1427, 1724)
