Kevin Voss

Kevin Voss is the system-bearing swordsman whom the Akashic Records create to oppose Jezebeth. He begins as Lock Academy's first-ranked student and the apparent hero of the age, but his advantages are instruments of a mission he did not choose: quests accelerate his growth, the Time Codex binds him to Ren Dover's deaths, and Synchronization returns memories of repeated failed worlds. Kevin ultimately turns those instruments against their maker, builds the Human Alliance, transfers his power and plan to Ren, and accepts death so that someone else can reach the Records. Ren later restores him and offers the ordinary human life that the Records denied him.

Biography

The first-ranked student and the system's price

Kevin enters Lock Academy as the first-ranked student of his year, already distinguished by exceptional training discipline and a background with no prestigious bloodline. His prominence makes him a target for students and factions that resent an unaffiliated prodigy. What appears from the outside to be effortless talent is supported by a private system that assigns quests, awards ranks and resources, and had already sent him through lethal missions before enrollment. The scars across his torso and back record those ordeals more honestly than his public ranking does (Chapters 7–59).

The system does not remove Kevin's agency, but it repeatedly makes advancement inseparable from violence. In Hollberg, he accepts a quest to eliminate a corrupt official for a D- breakthrough, investigates rather than relying blindly on the prompt, and confronts guards strong enough to force him into Overdrive. Victory leaves his muscles spasming and his body barely functional. His response is not triumph: he recognizes how dependent he remains on the system's emergency power and measures strength by whether he can survive without invoking it (Chapters 59–61).

The wider Hollberg disaster forces Kevin beyond the cleaner morality of a quest target. He fights beside Emma Roshfield, Amanda Stern, and Ren Dover when villains and demons turn the academy exercise into a massacre. Kevin protects others and uses Overdrive despite the exhaustion it causes, but he also learns that Ren has manipulated events around their group. Rather than accept being guided as an unthinking protagonist, he insists that his decisions and their consequences remain his own, establishing the moral independence that later lets him resist both Ren and the Records (Chapters 62–74).

Levisha's inheritance and partnership in Immorra

Kevin's first decisive partnership with Ren grows out of humiliation and need. After Professor Gilbert overwhelms him, Kevin accepts Ren's offer of a five-star sword art even though the promised payment is a dangerous expedition to Immorra. He does not receive the art as a gift: he enters the hidden dungeon, survives its trials, and witnesses Grandmaster Levisha execute all sixty-four linked movements. Kevin initially understands only the first eight and rejects the founder's fatal endpoint, resolving to perfect the style without surrendering his life to its last movement (Chapters 115–130).

That bargain carries Kevin into Immorra, where his system provides a map but not a complete understanding of the occupied orc world. Ren uses him to poison demon supplies and help open the castle while Silug leads the rebellion. Kevin follows the plan because freeing the prisoners and weakening the occupiers are goals he can endorse, yet he continues questioning Ren's secret knowledge and refuses excessive rewards after already receiving Levisha's legacy. By making the operation a chosen collaboration rather than passive obedience, he begins turning Ren from a suspicious benefactor into a trusted partner (Chapters 161–186).

Back at the Lock, Kevin remains the standard against which the other students measure themselves. He competes, trains, and participates in the inter-academy tournament while his bonds with Emma, Amanda, Jin Horton, and Melissa Hall become less like a predetermined protagonist party and more like a group built through shared danger. His rivalry with Aaron Rhinestone and his public results reinforce the expectation that he will become humanity's champion, but the chapters do not give him knowledge of the larger mechanism yet. He is still living the heroic role that others see, unaware of who designed it (Chapters 187–293).

The Time Codex and the choice to save Ren

The red Time Codex appears in Kevin's room after Ren has been missing for years. Touching it forces Kevin into a reconstructed Lock timeline and then a vision of a ruined world in which he faces Jezebeth. When he wakes, the book shows obscured scenes from Ren's present and the system reports twenty-two-percent Synchronization alongside a shortened countdown to the Demon King's ascent. Kevin is frightened by the involuntary experience, but curiosity and concern overcome his caution; he continues reading because it is his only direct evidence that Ren is alive (Chapters 310–324).

Kevin uses that knowledge constructively. Seeing Ren advance and remain hunted, he plans to join the Union and acquire enough authority to protect his friend when he returns. The Codex also sharpens his competitive drive, since Ren's C-rank breakthrough places the formerly weaker student ahead of him. Kevin deliberately limits how often he watches because monitoring Ren feels like an invasion of privacy, an important boundary in a relationship where both men possess books that expose the other's life (Chapters 324–341).

That restraint ends when the system shows Ren dying during the Inferno operation. Kevin has ten minutes to change the Codex, but the book rejects a vague command and requires C-rank mana for the precise alteration that could save him. Still C-, Kevin consumes Sky Grass without preparation, forces a breakthrough that damages his internal organs, and changes the dampening system's completion from ninety-four to one hundred percent. He falls into a two-week coma, but the quest completes and Ren survives. Kevin's first deliberate use of temporal revision is therefore an act of friendship purchased with bodily harm rather than an abstract exercise of fate (Chapters 356–370).

Truth, rivalry, and the Issanor conference

As Synchronization rises, Kevin and Ren finally compare secrets. Kevin explains his system, identifies the red volume as the Time Codex, and admits that it showed Ren's death; Ren reveals that his own version once displayed Kevin's immediate future. Their discovery gives each man proof that the other has already altered death on his behalf. It also creates a basis for trust strong enough that Kevin shares the mechanism which had defined his entire life, even while neither yet understands why the Records connected them (Chapters 397–408).

That trust is tested by Aaron's attack on Emma. Kevin recognizes Aaron's message to Ren, concludes that Ren concealed involvement, and confronts him in fury. Ren answers by revealing his memories of writing The Luminescent Swordsman, Kevin's role as its protagonist, and the manipulation he committed to keep the imagined plot intact. Kevin rejects the idea that his world and losses were merely authored events, but he listens, recognizes how Ren's impossible knowledge now fits, and accepts that the system may be the Records' way of selecting him to fight Jezebeth (Chapters 422–423).

The conference tournament turns that revelation into an honest rivalry. Kevin demonstrates the Levisha Style's accumulating movements against stronger opponents, then fights Ren without the false distance that characterized their early relationship. Overdrive and the chained style let him keep pressing even as ribs crack and internal damage mounts, while Ren's fourth Keiki movement eventually defeats him. Kevin later wins against Vaalyun by sustaining Overdrive long enough to match an A- opponent, accepting another serious internal injury. The tournament proves both his extraordinary ceiling and the recurring cost of trying to reach it immediately (Chapters 424–460).

Regression memories and the end of the apparent hero

Kevin reaches A- after the conference period and joins Ren's portal mission when the system begins malfunctioning. Jezebeth interferes with the formation and scatters the linked groups across a demon world, where Kevin and Emma fight toward a mana compressor while Ren's other companions regroup elsewhere. At the compressor's white core, Kevin is drawn into preserved memories rather than merely destroying machinery. The mission changes from escape to an encounter with the hidden history that the system had denied him (Chapters 538–590).

Inside those memories, Kevin witnesses repeated regressions, Ren's accumulated deaths, and the other Ren engineering an author identity to make the latest loop develop differently. He sees trials in which people close to him are killed to test whether grief will make him capable of defeating Jezebeth, and learns that his own failure is the anchor around which worlds have been reset. This knowledge reframes Ren's worst manipulations as consequences of a much older cycle without excusing them, while forcing Kevin to recognize his own unremembered responsibility for the suffering (Chapters 591–597).

Kevin escapes with the group and continues seeking the missing context through Synchronization. When the process completes, the system advances him from A- to A+ and returns enough memory for him to understand why neither he nor Ren could end the cycle as expected. His response is a hollow acceptance rather than relief: he concludes that he is “worse” than Ren and that he has passed the point of retreat. From this moment, the apparent chosen hero begins acting as a planner preparing his own replacement rather than as the Records' obedient final weapon (Chapters 598–607).

Alliance Head and rebellion against the Records

Kevin begins absorbing the Time Codex and receives more prior-loop knowledge while constructing a human coalition that can function without him. He supports the war in Immorra, coordinates with Octavious Hall, and uses his growing Union authority to remove Monolith agents. The political work matters because his goal has expanded beyond defeating one enemy: humanity must survive the institutional collapse that will follow. His increasing command is paired with a private dilemma, since Synchronization grants power and certainty while making him less sure which version of Kevin is acting (Chapters 617–664).

His attack on Malik Alshayatin shows how completely memory and preparation have changed him. Kevin buys Mirage Cloak and Permeation from the system, coats the SS-ranked Nillinham Dagger with mana-severing poison, activates Overdrive to reach SS-, and passes through Malik's defenses. When Everblood reverses the apparent assassination, the reversal is part of Kevin's trap rather than a failure of foresight. The operation helps break the Monolith and gives the new alliance room to consolidate, but Kevin's reliance on items and surprise also shows that temporary SS- output does not make his ordinary body equal to the highest-ranked enemies (Chapters 665–672).

Synchronization then exposes Kevin's true origin. The Records created him with knowledge of his mission from birth, placed him with Margaret and Jonathan Voss, and repeatedly allowed the parents he learned to love to die as each regression returned him to the same beginning. Over centuries of loops, he changes from an emotionally detached instrument into someone capable of love, grief, rage, and resentment toward the source code he cannot directly disobey. His seventy-nine-percent state brings more power, but also threatens the boundaries of the current self who formed at the Lock (Chapters 678–691).

Sacrifice, inheritance, and an ordinary life

As Alliance Head, Kevin defeats the Monolith's remaining leadership and accepts the backlash of compulsory evacuations because civilians would otherwise obstruct the coming battle. He reunites privately with Ren, shows him the ruins of his childhood home, and describes the centuries in which every person he loved died regardless of his intervention. These disclosures are not simply a farewell: they prepare Ren to understand that Kevin's apparent obedience has concealed a long plan to injure the Records' control and create a successor capable of choosing differently (Chapters 707–724).

Kevin removes part of his Protector power, plants it to construct the alternate world and its path to the condemned sword grandmasters, and arranges for Ren to enter it after the transfer. He also prepares to use the Protectors themselves as fuel for Ren's eventual assimilation, knowingly choosing a method that will cause further suffering. Kevin admits the selfishness of placing the burden on his friend, but believes Ren's removed talent limit gives him the one chance Kevin never possessed: the possibility of preserving the people he loves while still reaching the Records (Chapters 725–726).

At full Synchronization, Kevin reverses the relationship imposed on him. Memories show that in an earlier loop he bound the other Ren with law-like chains, refused to finish Jezebeth on command, and killed himself to reset the world at the required moment. In the present, Synchronization falls from one hundred percent to zero as he transfers his accumulated power and memories into Ren. Kevin dies after expressing that he never wanted death, erases himself from most ordinary memories, and leaves Ren both the means and the staged alternate-world lesson needed to assimilate Protector power (Chapter 727).

Kevin continues to affect the story after his physical disappearance. Ren inherits his Akashic abilities, follows his preparations through the alternate world, becomes SSS-, and eventually reaches the Records. A remaining projection of Kevin guides Ren at the final threshold, confirming that the sacrifice was not submission to the old order but the means of producing a new Overseer. Once Ren holds that authority, he can restore Kevin in a qualified form and offer him the choice the Records never did: remain an immortal Protector or surrender the office and its power (Chapters 728–858).

Kevin chooses rest and an ordinary human future. He initially asks whether Emma could share Protector status, but accepts that imposing immortality on her would repeat the same denial of choice that defined his own existence. He relinquishes the compulsory role and returns to Emma at the orphanage, nervous enough that his prepared speech collapses into an offer to help. The final scene resolves his arc through limitation rather than supremacy: Kevin is alive, finite, remembered by the person he loves, and finally able to decide what his life is for (Chapter 861).

Appearance and personality

Kevin is introduced as exceptionally handsome, with a well-conditioned, scarred body shaped by years of dangerous training. His most persistent features are crimson eyes, broad shoulders, and red mana that envelops his body and broadsword. His hair is initially black; at the height of his recovered Protector state, black dye falls away to expose white hair that flickers between white and black as he expends his power. After restoration he again appears with the crimson-eyed human form Emma remembers (Chapters 7–59, 665–726, 861).

His public manner is calm, earnest, and disciplined, but he is intensely competitive and socially awkward. He trains for hours, treats being surpassed by Ren as motivation, and tends to express affection through action rather than easy conversation. He can be morally direct to the point of confrontation, especially when Emma is endangered or Ren withholds responsibility. Yet he also respects secrets, limits his use of the Codex when it feels intrusive, and is capable of revising his anger after hearing an explanation (Chapters 59–63, 324–341, 408–443).

Recovered memories add strategic coldness without wholly replacing the present Kevin. As Alliance Head he accepts unpopular orders, deception, and sacrifice on a scale his academy self would have resisted. The change comes from centuries of repeatedly losing his parents, Emma, and Ren, not from simple corruption. His final choices retain both sides: he manipulates Ren into a brutal succession plan, but does so because he wants someone to escape the binary of killing Jezebeth or losing everyone, and ultimately gives up cosmic power for a finite relationship (Chapters 607–727, 861).

Powers and abilities

The system and its resources

Kevin's system is an Akashic mechanism more advanced than the ordinary status interface available to every human. It issues quests, displays private objectives and countdowns, stores items in a dimensional space, awards direct rank increases, and supplies materials or skills through a credit-based shop. Early rewards accelerate a talented but otherwise unaffiliated swordsman; later purchases such as Mirage Cloak and Permeation allow him to infiltrate Malik's hiding place. The system can also answer narrowly framed operational questions, as when it specifies the rank needed to edit the Codex (Chapters 20, 59–60, 123, 357, 408, 665).

Its benefits are neither autonomous nor benevolent. Missions can demand assassination, punish failure by advancing Jezebeth's arrival, or go silent when the Records' design requires Kevin to develop differently. Rewards may force mana through his body rather than representing trained growth. Most importantly, the system belongs to the Records that created him; its apparent guidance is a control structure aimed at producing Jezebeth's killer. Kevin can exploit its shop and prompts, but cannot simply command it to free him from that purpose (Chapters 59–61, 356–370, 561, 607–618, 685–691).

Swordsmanship and the Levisha Style

Before inheriting Levisha's art, Kevin uses Everlasting Sunset and Sky Steps. Everlasting Sunset is a four-star sword manual built around feints that conceal the true sword intent under multiple false attacks; by Chapter 59 he has reached greater mastery. Sky Steps is a three-star movement art at minor mastery that raises agility and, at higher development, permits steps through the air. His fine mana control lets him wrap a stable, thin coating around a weapon, increasing force while reducing wasted mana (Chapters 59, 356).

The five-star Levisha Style becomes his signature art. Its movements form an escalating chain: every executed movement increases the precision, speed, and power of the next, allowing a B-ranked Kevin to drive a thirtieth strike at A-rank force. The inheritance shows sixty-four movements, but Kevin can initially visualize only eight safely and later reaches much longer chains through training. It favors a broadsword and sustained initiative; disruption before the chain builds limits its advantage, while continuing toward the highest movements inflicts escalating bodily damage and can become fatal (Chapters 126–130, 413, 443, 684).

Overdrive and supporting skills

Overdrive pushes Kevin's bodily functions to extremes. Its initial E-ranked description grants approximately double strength for one minute and raises his other physical statistics, making it an emergency bridge against opponents above his base rank. The cost begins as hours of extreme fatigue, muscle spasms, and impaired concentration. Repeated or prolonged use escalates that harm to cracked ribs, damaged internal organs, and—within regression memories—consumption of his lifespan. It supplies output, not safe durability, so victory can leave him unable to continue (Chapters 37, 59–61, 69–72, 443–460).

As Kevin's base strength and Synchronization grow, Overdrive's ceiling grows with them. In Chapter 665 it rapidly raises his A+-confirmed body to a temporary SS- state, enough to deliver the prepared dagger attack against Malik. That leap should not be read as a permanent rank: stealth, Permeation, poison, a specialized dagger, and surprise remain necessary, and Everblood's counter still endangers him. Mind Cleansing briefly accelerates analysis at risk of brain trauma, while Mana Coating improves mana replenishment by opening the body's pores; both likewise exchange immediate performance for physiological strain (Chapters 59, 356–357, 665–667).

Time Codex and Synchronization

The Time Codex links Kevin to Ren and the history of the regressions. In Kevin's custody it displays Ren's experiences, replays deaths, and—when system permission and sufficient mana align—accepts precise changes to a possible outcome. Broad revisions are rejected as too vague or too expensive; changing a single completion percentage requires C-rank mana and leaves Kevin injured and comatose after his forced breakthrough. The book cannot be stored in his ordinary dimensional inventory and may appear or disappear according to its Akashic function (Chapters 310–312, 341, 356–370, 397–408).

Synchronization is the process by which Kevin reconnects with knowledge, identity, and power accumulated across prior loops. It begins at twenty-two percent, advances through system rewards and Codex absorption, and reaches seventy-nine percent after more memories return. Greater synchronization makes him stronger and more strategically complete, but destabilizes his sense of which Kevin he is becoming. The visions can reproduce pain and emotions from prior worlds, while full completion restores the terrible context of what he and Ren did across centuries (Chapters 312, 370, 397, 457, 594–618, 678–691).

At full Synchronization, Kevin can separate and transfer Akashic power. He creates a condensed orb whose removal weakens him, seeds an alternate reality and training path, imposes chains that seal even the other Ren's mana in regression memories, erases himself from ordinary memory, and passes his remaining abilities into Ren as the meter drains to zero. The corpus does not catalogue every inherited skill as a discrete Kevin technique, but Ren later gains broad access to Kevin's former powers, including law-linked tracking and the route to Protector assimilation (Chapters 725–727, 758, 777, 810).

Leadership, planning, and portal work

Kevin develops from a capable team fighter into a political and strategic commander. At the Lock he assigns opponents according to each teammate's strengths and coordinates seamlessly with Jin against an A- enemy. Later he joins the Union specifically to gain the authority needed to protect Ren, eliminates infiltrators, recruits Octavious into a coalition, directs wartime evacuations, and becomes Alliance Head. His recovered-loop knowledge makes the later plans unusually predictive, but their success still depends on other people choosing to cooperate (Chapters 324, 413, 462, 625–672, 707–723).

He can also create and operate portals with appropriate cores and preparation. A portal formation lets him return a limited number of people from the demon world, while an A-rank core powers the formation used in the compressor mission. These workings are vulnerable to Akashic interference: Jezebeth detects Kevin's connection through the formation and redirects its linked destinations, scattering the party. Portal use is therefore a technical application of mana and resources, not unrestricted spatial travel (Chapters 560–561, 598–600).

Relationships

• Ren Dover: Kevin moves from barely knowing Ren to accepting his secret bargains, watching over him through the Codex, and treating him as his closest friend and rival. Each saves the other's life by altering the red book. Kevin later condemns Ren's manipulations, hears the truth, and ultimately makes Ren his inheritor—an act of trust that also burdens him with a deliberately brutal plan (Chapters 115–186, 310–460, 591–727).
• Emma Roshfield: Emma is Kevin's closest companion and eventual romantic partner. They repeatedly protect each other in battle, and danger to her can break Kevin's composure. Across regressions she is among the people whose inevitable loss teaches him love and grief. After Ren restores him, Kevin gives up Protector immortality rather than impose it on Emma and returns to help at her orphanage (Chapters 37–74, 413–460, 585–600, 723–727, 861).
• Jin Horton: Jin is Kevin's academy rival and one of his most compatible combat partners. Their personalities clash, but years of training let Jin create openings while Kevin builds the Levisha chain against stronger enemies. Kevin later brings him on the compressor mission and entrusts him with high-risk operations despite the rivalry (Chapters 7–74, 413, 558–585).
• Amanda Stern and Melissa Hall: Both are part of Kevin's central Lock cohort and later alliance. Amanda's experience inside the compressor memories exposes her to the consequences of the regressions, while Melissa's inventions support the society Kevin is trying to preserve. Kevin treats them as capable partners rather than satellites of his assigned protagonist role (Chapters 7–74, 161–254, 558–607, 661–723).
• Donna Longbern: Donna is Kevin's instructor and one of the adults who recognizes both his talent and work ethic. She teaches him refined psyon control, intervenes when Gilbert nearly kills him, and later measures the extraordinary distance between his academy rank and wartime strength (Chapters 7–11, 74, 117, 356, 708).
• Jezebeth: The Records create Kevin specifically to kill Jezebeth, making the Demon King both his assigned enemy and the measure of every failed regression. Kevin eventually refuses the forced conclusion, binds the other Ren, and transfers the problem to a successor capable of reaching the Records. Jezebeth's inability to sense Kevin after the sacrifice confirms that Kevin has escaped their former Akashic link (Chapters 312, 457, 618, 685–691, 727, 755).
• Octavious Hall: Kevin uses recovered knowledge to secure Octavious's political and military backing for the Human Alliance, offering a route toward SSS- in exchange. Their agreement gives Kevin enough institutional strength to challenge the Monolith and govern the wartime human domain (Chapters 661–672, 707–723).
• The Akashic Records: The Records create Kevin, supply his system, reset his life, and define him as a tool for eliminating Jezebeth. Kevin cannot attack their control directly, so his rebellion takes the form of exploiting their own mechanisms: Synchronization, regression, Protector power, the Codex, and a successor whose choices the old plan cannot fully constrain (Chapters 618, 685–691, 725–758).
