Amanda Stern
Amanda Stern is an archer, the daughter of Demon Hunter Guild master Edward Stern and Natasha Stern, and one of the principal fighters of the human alliance. Childhood kidnappings and family losses teach her to hide feeling behind a reserved exterior, but her choices repeatedly reveal loyalty, caution, and an unusually strong sense of responsibility. From a top Lock Academy student, she grows into a guild board member, Ren Dover's partner, and the battlefield commander whose final arrow creates the opening needed to defeat Jezebeth.
Biography
Lock Academy and the first deviations
Amanda enters Lock Academy as the eighth-ranked student in her class and the sole archer able to strike the range's five-hundred-meter target reliably. Her aloofness is defensive rather than contemptuous. She has been used as leverage against her father since being kidnapped at seven, while Edward's work keeps him away and the death of the nanny who raised her removes her last dependable source of warmth. By eleven, Amanda has trained herself not to expect, grieve, or form unnecessary attachments; reading becomes the private refuge behind her severe public composure. (Chapters 7–45)
That composure is tested when Elijah Turner lures her to an after-party with a photograph of the mother she believes abandoned her. Amanda attends because she wants an explanation, he drugs and traps her, and Ren secretly kills him after she loses consciousness. Ren arranges the scene so that her arrows receive public credit, but Amanda remembers enough to know she did not win that fight. Rather than accepting the convenient account, she studies her masked rescuer and begins tracing the contradiction between Ren's careless classroom image and the calculating fighter she witnessed. (Chapters 45–49)
Amanda gradually allows her academy circle past the defenses built in childhood. Emma Roshfield, Kevin Voss, Jin Horton, and Melissa Hall visit her after the party, and she later fights with them through Hollberg and academy exercises. She accepts Ren's tactics during tournament tryouts, but being disarmed at close range teaches her that precision and talent do not remove an archer's positional vulnerability. She continues training, evaluates Ren and Melissa's Magic Cards proposal on its merits, and reaches E rank by the end of the academy interval. (Chapters 48–160)
The banquet, the tournament, and guild responsibility
As Demon Hunter's heir, Amanda cannot treat her school friendships as separate from guild politics. She presents the Magic Cards project to the guild, defends its practical value before the board, and becomes the channel through which Ren's commercial idea acquires institutional support. At the elite banquet, she also functions as a battlefield coordinator: protected by a student line, she surveys the entire engagement and fires wherever an ally is threatened. The scene demonstrates the model that defines her later warfare—distance gives her broad control of a field, but it also makes suppressing or reaching her a priority for every opponent. (Chapters 192–210)
The inter-academy tournament brings Amanda closer to Ren while exposing the cost of his secrecy. She competes with her friends, helps protect Nola Dover, and is present when Ren is abducted and apparently killed. Only after his supposed death does she admit to herself that her attachment is romantic. Remaining at Lock becomes unbearable because every familiar place recalls him, so she leaves the academy and assumes work in Demon Hunter instead. Her withdrawal is not a surrender of responsibility: she accepts the guild role while privately carrying nightmares and grief she cannot express. (Chapters 230–268)
Demon Hunter's elders and resources raise Amanda to D-, while day-to-day board work teaches her the institution she is expected to inherit. Work also becomes an avoidance mechanism until Nola casually says she met her brother. Amanda uses guild surveillance rather than hope alone, identifies the disguised man visiting the Dover family, and proves to herself that Ren survived. She shares the evidence only with Melissa, orders the trail deleted, and protects Ren's concealment instead of exposing him for leaving her uninformed. When the guild weakens, she likewise asks Melissa to shield the Dovers, turning private loyalty into a concrete use of her office. (Chapters 268–297)
Issanor and the interspecies tournament
Amanda rejoins her former classmates around graduation and the journey to Issanor, now carrying the authority and habits of a guild executive. She cooperates in operations against demon-pill facilities and helps negotiate coordination with Jin rather than allowing old academy rivalries to fracture the group. Her reunion with Ren is complicated by his reaction to Aaron Rhinestone, one of his Monolith torturers. Seeing Ren's panic and instability strips away the illusion that his survival erased what happened in captivity, and Amanda's response becomes patient observation rather than a demand that he immediately explain trauma he can barely control. (Chapters 371–398)
During the interspecies tournament, Amanda fights as a B- long-range contestant and reaches the round of eight. The competition matters less to her than Emma's catastrophic injury: at Emma's bedside, Amanda identifies her as the first friend she ever made and finally allows Ren to see the fear beneath her reserve. That confession marks a reversal of her childhood rule against expectation. She now has people whose loss can hurt her, and she chooses to remain connected anyway, supporting Emma through coma and recovery rather than retreating into the safety of detachment. (Chapters 414–440)
Ren's recovery of a Xurin fruit resolves Amanda's oldest family wound. He gives her the means to wake Natasha, revealing that her mother did not willingly abandon her but had been incapacitated by a curse. Amanda administers the fruit and witnesses Natasha awaken; Natasha immediately recognizes Amanda's B- rank and the extraordinary pace of her growth. The reunion does not erase years of loneliness, yet it restores the parent Amanda believed had rejected her. When the group returns to Earth, Amanda also houses the Dover family in a guarded Demon Hunter building, extending the security of her own family to Ren's. (Chapters 438–461)
Return to Earth and the compressor campaign
Amanda responds to the announced Third Cataclysm with disciplined dissatisfaction. Though already nearing B rank in the guild's training facility, she measures herself against the war rather than against people her age and judges the result inadequate. Edward's rescue later restores her other missing parent, and his return frees her from carrying the guild alone. By the time Ren sees her again she is close to A-, a rise driven by sustained access to guild training but also by her refusal to assume that wealth, lineage, or an exceptional start will be sufficient against the coming disaster. (Chapters 489–545)
With her family restored, Amanda permits her relationship with Ren to become explicit. On their date she challenges his habit of disappearing, asks him to involve her when her strength or guild standing could help, and makes him acknowledge his jealousy rather than accepting emotional ambiguity. She does not demand that he abandon necessary missions; she asks for notice and the chance to choose involvement. Her quiet statement that she is already taken converts years of inference into a public commitment and makes communication, rather than rescue, the central condition she places on him. (Chapters 550–558)
The next portal mission proves why Amanda insists on participation. Scattered onto a demon world with the others, she brings Angelica's group to Kevin, penetrates the pyramid, and covers the assault on the Mana Compressor's core. After Kevin's Codex exposes Ren's erased regressions, Amanda stays with Ren as he explains that another consciousness is consuming him and that he expects to disappear within years. She kisses him, rejects his attempt to make the decision for her, and promises not to repeat the mistake of letting an expected loss prevent a relationship—even though her composure collapses only after she leaves his sight. (Chapters 562–600)
Immorra, Melandoir, and the Demon Domain
Back at Demon Hunter, Amanda investigates the guild's implausibly rapid expansion while concealing her own progress. A rank-suppressing necklace makes her appear A rank when she has secretly reached S-, denying enemies reliable intelligence about the guild's heir. She removes it when Immorra is attacked and fights for roughly eight hours, using Target Lock and mana arrows until her fingers bleed and her reserves fail. Her performance confirms both her value and her limits: she can erase numerous demons and defend a wide sector, but sustained automatic targeting consumes mana faster than even her endurance can replace it. (Chapters 623–657)
Amanda's role in Immorra is not confined to combat. She helps Ren search the captured treasury and insists on maintaining records, shares a home with him while he attempts the dangerous demonic-blood procedure, and later joins Ren, Jin, and Melissa on Melandoir. Under a restrictive contract and in an unfamiliar demon society, she gathers information, fights monsters, and supports the negotiations that secure World Nectar. Her steadiness supplies an ordinary point of reference during Ren's transformation, while her own archery continues to develop toward heavier bows, more powerful shots, and increasingly efficient mana constructs. (Chapters 657–722)
After returning, Amanda supports the alliance's transition from defense to a campaign through the Demon Domain. The peaceful constructed world encountered after Kevin's death contains another Amanda with a different history and sword training; that version is not the principal Amanda and does not establish a change in the real archer's weapon discipline. The actual Amanda is again present when Ren returns, accompanies the strike group into demon territory, and helps prepare Immorra to receive Earth's population. Her practical concern remains survival: family, guild, and alliance are treated as overlapping responsibilities rather than competing loyalties. (Chapters 723–800)
The Seven Pillars and the last battle
When the Third Cataclysm begins, Amanda is twenty-eight, explicitly S+, and close to SS-. Chapter 805 establishes this progression from Amanda's own response after Jin turns from Emma and asks Amanda what she achieved; the following rank assessment therefore belongs to Amanda, not Emma. Transported alone into the Pillar of Wrath, she refuses an apparently helpless stranger because the unfamiliar environment makes unverified trust too dangerous, correctly avoiding a disguised demon. Later, her Split shot turns one mana arrow into thousands, breaks a collapsing front, and gives alliance troops time to reorganize. (Chapters 805–820)
Ren temporarily places law power at Amanda's disposal, magnifying her arrows but imposing a biological cost her rank cannot nullify. Golden-rune shots curve away from allies and devastate demons, yet Amanda becomes pale and visibly ages until Ren coats her body with the laws to reverse the immediate effect. She continues fighting after he leaves, earning the demons' name “Harbinger of Rain” as her volleys kill hundreds at a time. The title captures her battlefield function, but the bleeding fingers, drained mana, and reliance on Jin and Donna's support show that even mass-area archery remains an endurance contest rather than unlimited firepower. (Chapters 824–842)
Before Ren confronts Jezebeth, Amanda assumes command of the surrounding defense, orders barriers raised, uses Ryan's communications to move vulnerable fighters, and selects a high firing position. Ren gives her one law-charged shot and trusts her to determine its moment. Amanda resists firing while Ren is beaten, waits until Jezebeth exposes his back while extracting Ren's laws, and releases. The shot ages her hands, burns her body, disintegrates her bow, and knocks her unconscious, but it wounds Jezebeth and enables Ren's final reversal. One year after the war, Ren climbs to meet Amanda with a ring box and kneels; the corpus ends as he calls her name, before her formal answer is shown. (Chapters 854–857; Epilogue 3)
Appearance and personality
Amanda is a slender young woman with a small, naturally beautiful face, deep phoenix-like blue eyes, and sleek black hair that initially reaches her waist and is often restrained by a simple hairpin. She generally wears little or no makeup, and her quiet bearing makes her appear remote even when she is paying close attention. In battle she ties or frees her hair as needed and favors clothing she can keep orderly; by the final epilogue, her black hair is described as falling to her shoulders. (Chapters 7, 45, 489; Epilogue 3)
Her defining public traits are intelligence, restraint, vigilance, and economy of speech. She reads situations before committing, keeps guild information compartmentalized, and rarely displays panic. The reserve is partly learned survival behavior: repeated kidnappings taught her that visible attachments can be exploited. It does not mean an absence of feeling. Amanda experiences affection, jealousy, grief, and anger intensely, but usually processes them privately and turns them into action—protecting the Dovers, investigating Ren's survival, restoring her mother, or holding a battlefield position long after exhaustion. (Chapters 7–45, 268–297, 419, 552, 600)
Amanda is also exacting toward herself. A near-perfect target pattern can provoke disproportionate frustration, and she repeatedly calls herself weak despite progress that astonishes veteran fighters. That perfectionism supports exceptional practice discipline but can obscure legitimate achievement. She is notably fastidious about cleanliness, shielding her clothes from demonic blood even amid an eight-hour battle, and her orderliness extends to guild records and treasury inventories. With trusted people, the colder manner relaxes into dry humor, small smiles, blunt demands, and occasional bursts of temper that show how much of her earlier silence was protection rather than temperament alone. (Chapters 489, 647, 657, 722)
Powers and abilities
Archery and psyon control
Amanda is an archery prodigy whose fundamental advantage is precision at extreme range. At the beginning of Lock she alone can reliably strike a target at five hundred meters; later she kills moving enemies from hundreds of meters and surveys enough of a battlefield to provide selective cover for many allies. She normally uses psyons to manifest translucent blue mana arrows, allowing rapid multi-shot sequences without a physical quiver. Greater range and destructive force do not eliminate ordinary aiming constraints: wind, sight lines, surprise, and the need to keep her bow remain important, while being disarmed or rushed before she creates distance is a demonstrated weakness. (Chapters 8, 145, 206, 414, 489)
Her basic shots scale from precise penetrations to explosive mana projectiles. She can form several arrows at once, target exposed demon cores, detonate an arrow after impact, or add blade-like mana ends to her bow for emergency close combat. Those adaptations prevent helplessness at melee range but do not turn her into a dedicated close-quarters fighter; the bow's bladed ends are a survival measure after opponents breach her preferred spacing. Prolonged fire abrades her fingers, stresses the bow hand, and drains her core, with Chapter 647 showing her mana constructs flickering out after approximately eight hours of continuous combat. (Chapters 145, 206, 414, 647)
Apollo's Descent
Apollo's Descent is an E-ranked archery skill that gathers atmospheric mana at an arrow's tip before release. The resulting projectile falls with comet-like speed and detonates across the surrounding area rather than behaving as a purely penetrating shot. Because art proficiency survives the virtual exercise's suppression of Amanda to G rank, she can execute it even when raw output is restricted. Its limits are explicit: it consumes large amounts of mana, requires a visible charge interval, and announces enough power for opponents to sacrifice a defender or close the distance after the blast. (Chapter 145)
Target Lock
Target Lock is an S-ranked aiming skill used during Immorra's siege. Once Amanda acquires sight of approaching demons, the skill functions like automated aim assistance: she can twist through the air, loose arrows in rapid succession, and hit skulls or cores without completing a conventional careful aim for each target. This is especially effective against numerous mobile enemies attacking from several directions. The tradeoff is severe mana consumption. It accelerates the very depletion it helps her survive, and it cannot create mana once her constructs begin to fail or substitute for allies when enemies reach her exhausted position. (Chapter 647)
Split and area saturation
Split converts a single launched mana arrow into thousands of descending projectiles at the apex of its flight. Amanda uses the technique over the Pillar of Wrath battlefield to wound or kill hundreds of demons and slow armored scorpions, creating enough space for alliance formations to withdraw and reset. The shot's value is control of a wide front rather than guaranteed destruction of every target: the scorpions' armor deflects some arrows, and the conspicuous mana buildup makes Amanda the enemy's immediate priority. She therefore relocates as soon as the volley begins rather than remaining at its origin point. (Chapter 820)
Borrowed law-charged arrows
During the final cataclysm, law energy lets Amanda imbue volleys with golden runes and curve them around allied troops. The effect vastly increases lethality and discrimination, but it is borrowed power, not a permanent personal realm or proof that she advanced beyond S+. A human body that uses laws it does not own pays with accelerated aging, pain, pallor, and exhaustion. Ren can temporarily restore her condition by coating her with laws, but her last isolated shot burns and ages her hands, destroys the bow on release, and leaves her unconscious. Its decisive success depends as much on Amanda's timing and accuracy as on the lent energy. (Chapters 833, 854–857)
Tactical command and guildcraft
Amanda's noncombat abilities are integral to her effectiveness. She evaluates contracts and technical proposals, manages guild paperwork, uses Demon Hunter's surveillance and security networks, keeps operational information secret, and organizes other fighters around her range. In the final battle she immediately distinguishes shelter, barrier, and communication roles, orders Ryan to direct civilians and weaker combatants, and recognizes that demons will prioritize surviving Ren and Jezebeth's clash over disrupting evacuation. Her command is calm, concise, and grounded in reading a battlefield as a system—the same wide-angle judgment that shapes her archery. (Chapters 158, 210, 293–297, 623, 657, 854)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| E rank, early stage | 49 | Her earliest explicit personal mana rank, established after Elijah's attack. |
| E rank | 160 | Reaches E through the academy training interval alongside Emma. |
| D- rank | 268 | Demon Hunter's elders and resources accelerate her growth after she leaves Lock and assumes guild duties. |
| B- rank | 424, 448 | Tournament records list her as B-, and Natasha independently confirms the rank after awakening. |
| Nearing A- rank | 545, 552 | Ren describes her on the verge of A-, and Amanda shortly afterward says she expects to break through soon. |
| S- rank, concealed as A | 623, 641 | She secretly reaches S- but uses a necklace to project A rank; removing it restores her true output for Immorra's siege. |
| S+ rank, approaching SS- | 805 | At age twenty-eight, Amanda is explicitly S+ and feels one step from SS-; this assessment follows Jin asking Amanda, not Emma, about her progress. |
Relationships
- Ren Dover: Ren first becomes Amanda's unidentified rescuer, then a classmate whose concealed competence she investigates. His apparent death makes her recognize her feelings, while evidence of his survival leads her to protect his secret and family despite anger at his silence. Their later relationship is built around Amanda challenging his habit of deciding alone: she asks to help, accepts the risk of his shortened life, fights beside him, and fires the one shot he entrusts to her. The final epilogue ends with Ren kneeling before her with a ring box, before her reply is recorded. (Chapters 45–49, 139–160, 230–297, 371–461, 538–600, 614–722, 770–857; Epilogue 3)
- Edward Stern: Edward is Amanda's father, guild master, and the source of both protection and absence in her childhood. His work and enemies expose her to repeated kidnappings, while his disappearance later forces her into Demon Hunter leadership before she is ready. His rescue lets her relinquish some administrative burden and train fully; they remain affectionate despite his overprotective security measures and comic hostility toward Ren. (Chapters 7, 45, 187–210, 230–297, 537–545, 623–631, 842)
- Natasha Stern: Amanda grows up believing Natasha chose to leave when she was two. Learning that a curse incapacitated her transforms abandonment into a problem Amanda can act upon; she uses the Xurin fruit Ren retrieves and witnesses Natasha awaken. Their reunion restores a relationship Amanda had treated as permanently lost, and Natasha later fights beside her during the final war. (Chapters 45, 438–461, 537–545, 575, 842)
- Emma Roshfield: Emma is Amanda's first friend and one of the few people who can read emotion through her reserve. They train and fight together from Lock onward, and Emma's tournament injury prompts Amanda's clearest admission that attachment has become worth the possibility of loss. Their temperaments balance each other: Emma talks openly and teases, while Amanda listens, restrains, and supplies practical care. (Chapters 36–70, 139–160, 194–254, 398–460, 562–607, 631–805)
- Kevin Voss, Jin Horton, and Melissa Hall: These classmates become Amanda's enduring operational circle. Kevin coordinates with her during the compressor attack; Jin repeatedly provides close-range support while her arrows control distance; Melissa becomes the confidante to whom Amanda reveals Ren's survival and a partner in Magic Cards and guild work. Their banter is often sharper than Amanda's outward reserve, but repeated campaigns make the group's trust practical and durable. (Chapters 48–70, 139–218, 230–297, 371–460, 562–600, 631–723, 773–842)
- Nola Dover: Amanda protects Nola at the academy tournament and continues visiting her after Ren's apparent death. Nola's insistence that she met her brother is the clue Amanda takes seriously enough to investigate, ultimately proving Ren lives. Their bond also connects Amanda to the Dover household independently of her romance with Ren. (Chapters 235–268, 287–297, 461, 538–558)
- Donna Longbern: Donna is Amanda's Lock instructor and later a battlefield ally. Her early judgment emphasizes effort over lineage, a principle Amanda's relentless training exemplifies. In the final war, Donna uses charm and mental interference near Amanda while Jin guards the close field, giving the archer room to maintain her mass volleys. (Chapters 7–8, 139–160, 631–652, 842)
Items
- Amanda's Bow: Amanda uses bows throughout the corpus, including academy weapons, her personal high-powered bow, and heavier training variants. They serve as frames for physical and mana arrows and can receive bladed mana ends in close combat. Her final bow disintegrates when she releases Ren's law-charged arrow. (Chapters 8, 145, 489, 647, 722, 854–857)
- Amanda's Rank-suppressing Necklace: This artifact forcibly lowers Amanda's displayed strength from S- to A, allowing her to hide her true rank from enemies watching Demon Hunter's heir. Wearing it feels stuffy and leaves a temporary red mark; taking it off restores her unrestricted S- output within seconds. (Chapters 623, 641)
- Xurin Fruit: Ren obtains this curative fruit and gives it to Amanda so she can awaken Natasha. Amanda brings it to her mother's bedside and uses it for the purpose that has driven much of her family search. (Chapters 438–448)
- World Nectar: Priscilla includes a portion for Amanda in the Melandoir bargain. It is a consumable restorative and clarity resource rather than a weapon or permanent source of rank. (Chapters 705–721)
- Mana Compressor: The compressor is an enemy installation rather than Amanda's possession. She helps Kevin, Jin, Emma, and the others breach and defend the device's core operation so it can be destroyed and the planet's mana can no longer be converted into demonic energy. (Chapters 562–587)
