Emma Roshfield
Emma Courtney Roshfield is a gifted human swordswoman whose blunt confidence, fierce loyalty, and refusal to remain dependent carry her from Lock Academy's elite first-year class into the wars against the Monolith and the demons. The daughter of Waylan Roshfield, called Oliver in the human-domain history, she becomes one of the closest friends of Kevin Voss and eventually his romantic partner. Repeated betrayals, a spinal injury, Kevin's disappearance, and the truth about her father turn her early fear of being a burden into a long campaign for strength and, after the final war, a search for a life built around care rather than combat.
Biography
Lock Academy and the first deviations
Emma enters Lock as the fifteenth-ranked student in her class and already carries the public weight of the Roshfield name. Her rough speech and impatience can make her seem arrogant, yet she voluntarily guides the newly arrived Kevin through the academy's faction politics and warns him that even an elective can create binding enemies. Within their dorm group she is the person who can speak comfortably to everyone, easing the hostility between Kevin and Jin Horton and drawing the quieter Amanda Stern and Melissa Hall into a functioning circle of friends. When Fabian Parker harasses her at the elective fair, she refuses to submit even under a much stronger student's pressure and humiliates him publicly rather than accept his entitlement. (Chapters 7, 36–38)
That loyalty becomes operational during the Hollberg attack. Emma fights assassins with paired short swords, helps search for the missing Jin, and initially turns on Ren Dover when she finds him holding Jin by the throat. Once the evidence shows that Ren secretly saved the group from an opponent they could not defeat, suspicion begins to give way to a reluctant reassessment. The incident also exposes both sides of her courage: she reacts immediately when a friend appears endangered, but her first impulse can outrun her understanding of the situation. (Chapters 55–70)
During later team training, Emma is dissatisfied when Kevin carries most of a trial and she concludes that she has made herself helpless by relying on the strongest member. She responds by training with Amanda rather than disguising the failure, refining an alternating two-blade style described as dance-like and pressing until both improve. By Chapter 160 she has reached E rank, but the emotional milestone matters as much as the formal one: strength becomes, for Emma, a way to protect her place beside her friends rather than merely preserve the prestige into which she was born. (Chapters 139–160)
Family pressure, friendship, and Ren's apparent death
As the academy social circle expands, Emma becomes one of the people who pulls Ren into it, helping him find formal clothes and treating him with increasing familiarity despite their abrasive exchanges. At the same time, her uncle Jasper freezes her family card, monitors her spending, and exploits her father's absence to suppress the direct heir. The sudden loss of effortless access to money humiliates and angers her, but it also forces her to recognize that family wealth can be withdrawn as a means of control; years later, that experience is why she still values her own salary and savings after the inheritance dispute is over. (Chapters 194–198, 227, 694)
Her bond with Kevin deepens through ordinary academy life and constant training. Emma makes an effort over his birthday gift, spars with him using her paired blades, and trusts him with details of Jasper's attempts to force her out of Lock. When the Monolith attack makes Ren appear to die, she grieves but also refuses to let Kevin collapse into self-blame. She tells him to turn grief into the strength needed to prevent another loss, then takes his hand and leads him into the funeral. By the end of this period, Kevin is no longer merely the talented classmate she once escorted around campus; he is the confidant she seeks when pressure from her family leaves her unsure what to do. (Chapters 230–254, 290)
Issanor, betrayal, and recovery
At the interspecies tournament, Jasper allies with the Parker family in an attempt to kill Emma and seize the Roshfield household. Emma notices that a stranger's restaurant recommendation and the route outside the city are suspicious, contacts her returning father, and agrees to serve as bait for a counter-plan. Her feigned confusion draws the ambushers into the open, allowing Waylan and her friends to confront them. This is an important correction to the apparent scene: Emma is not carelessly leading her friends into a trap, but knowingly taking the risk after identifying the plot herself. The success reunites her with the father whose unexplained absence had left her isolated and removes Jasper's immediate control over her life. (Chapters 409–413)
Emma then reaches the tournament's round of sixty-four despite Jasper having restricted her resources. Against Aaron Rhinestone, she attacks decisively and initially exploits his unstable mental state, but he bypasses the referee and stabs her through the back. The injury damages her spine, leaves her unable to move her legs, and transforms her existing insecurity into despair: she tells Kevin not to spend the tournament's prize on her because she believes she will only hold him back. Kevin instead resolves to obtain the elven tear, while Ren forfeits after defeating him so that Kevin can still win the tournament. Their choices save Emma, but they also intensify her discomfort with being protected at other people's expense. (Chapters 418–460)
After recovering, Emma does not treat the elven tear as an end to the problem. At C+ rank she asks her father for access to the Fallen Pit, a B-ranked family dungeon whose exit remains closed until half of its stored dungeon energy has been reduced through killing monsters. She accepts his condition that she first reach B- and train under him, showing that her determination has acquired more discipline after the tournament. Her motive is explicit: gratitude toward Kevin and Ren is mixed with sadness that her weakness cost them their rewards, and she wants enough power to stand beside them without requiring another sacrifice. (Chapters 469–475)
The Fallen Pit and the demon-world campaign
Emma spends more than half a year in the family dungeon, accumulating the practical experience that her restricted upbringing had denied her. On returning, she can dispatch B+ creatures that once troubled her and recognizes the distance she has crossed. When she is transported into a demon-controlled mana-compressor facility and her mana is sealed, she continues doing thousands of push-ups rather than remain idle. The captivity changes her understanding of training: a stronger body can withstand more mana and form a better foundation, so physical conditioning is not a distraction from advancement but one of its supports. (Chapters 562, 576–581)
Once freed, Emma shows a more mature version of the team fighter seen at Hollberg. She uses rapid twin-sword attacks in rotation with Kevin, Jin, and Amanda against a Marquis-ranked demon, keeps her attention on the opponent even while checking Kevin's condition, and creates an afterimage that lets her evade a counter-kick before cutting the arm holding him. The group still reaches its limit—Emma admits she cannot face another Marquis after the battle—but she remains useful through exhaustion and later joins Kevin in breaking the compressor's white core so the prisoners can escape. The campaign therefore validates her progress without pretending it has removed the hierarchy above her. (Chapters 585–601)
Alliance war, love, and unremembered losses
Back in the human domain, Emma's bluntness becomes a form of care. She and Amanda find Melissa after the latter's memories and insecurities are exposed; Emma draws on their shared childhood, credits Melissa's inventions with changing civilization, and tells her to value herself rather than live for her father's approval. On Immorra she, Jin, and Melissa investigate enemy movements, and Emma and Jin's S-rank-range speed leaves the B-ranked Melissa struggling to keep pace. Emma drinks one of Melissa's temporary enhancement potions before fighting in the larger defense, but even the combined group is injured by the residual force of top-level attacks, reinforcing that rank and teamwork still have hard limits. (Chapters 607, 631–651)
Kevin's attempt to distance himself from Emma creates a more personal crisis. She confronts him rather than accept silence, demanding to know whether he has stopped loving her and admitting that his avoidance hurts. Kevin explains that he expects a doomed ending and believes proximity to him will make her suffer; their reconciliation turns into an acknowledged romantic relationship, and Emma later works as his secretary after he becomes head of the Alliance. The position is not merely sentimental: she manages his schedule and personnel access, questions policy risks, and insists on being paid because Jasper's earlier financial control taught her not to take security for granted. (Chapters 631–694)
When Kevin disappears and the world's memory of him erodes, Emma cannot name the resulting loss, but her body and habits preserve it. She drives herself through two-sword practice until pain briefly masks an inexplicable emptiness, cries without understanding why, and later experiences recurring fragments of someone she cannot consciously identify. During the same period, Ren kills her father after discovering that “Oliver” is Waylan and the Protector of the Seat of Diligence. Ren conceals both the death and the revelation that Waylan was responsible for mass death and had murdered Emma's mother, leaving Emma to search for a father she believes is on a secret mission. She nevertheless continues field work, accepts a needed rest when demonic energy overwhelms her rather than endanger her team, and later takes charge of an operation during humanity's migration to Immorra. (Chapters 727–800)
The Third Cataclysm and aftermath
In the Third Cataclysm, Emma fights with the Alliance forces but is overpowered and captured by a demon prince. Inside the Pillar of Greed she marks her route, baits a stalking demon into range, locates its core, and kills it when it refuses useful information. A demon then assumes Kevin's appearance and uses the traces left in her mind to destabilize her; hearing his name releases fragments of memories that her conscious mind can no longer organize. After Ryan Polive frees her, the now-confirmed S+ ranker adapts to an ordinary borrowed sword, kills several demons in one pass, and helps the escape group reach the prisoners whose mana is being drained. Her choice to attack the extraction runes buys initiative but also gets her overwhelmed, demonstrating the same courageous impulsiveness that marked her earliest battles. (Chapters 821, 829–840)
Emma finally stops Ren during the Pillar's collapse and demands the truths he has repeatedly withheld: who Kevin is and what happened to her father. Ren restores the necessary memories directly, leaving her to absorb both Kevin's sacrifice and Waylan's crimes amid the final battle. A year after the war, she has rebuilt the Ashton City Community Orphanage associated with her mother and father and uses her wealth to give its children a safe, well-equipped home. The work does not erase her grief or excuse Waylan; it is her first attempt to answer the harm attached to his legacy with care of her own. (Chapters 842–844; Epilogue 3)
Emma remains lonely because the people she loved most are gone, but the children give her purpose and a place where patience replaces the battlefield's urgency. Kevin, revived with the option of remaining a Protector or surrendering that existence, chooses ordinary human life and appears at the orphanage asking to become her helper. Their reunion closes Emma's arc not with another rank or victory, but with the return of a relationship she had refused to let vanish from her memories. (Chapter 861; Epilogue 3)
Appearance and personality
Emma is introduced at sixteen as a striking young woman with short brown-to-auburn hair, crystal-blue eyes, porcelain-white skin, and a well-proportioned athletic figure; the late Pillar battle describes the same hair as orange, a local color-term variant. Her hair rests near her shoulders during her first year, grows down her back during later training, and reaches her tailbone before she ties it into a ponytail while working for the Alliance. By the postwar epilogue, she again wears it short and tousled. In combat she carries one short sword at each hip and favors clothing that leaves her free to move; away from battle, her backward cap, blunt posture, and casual habits reinforce the tomboyish impression established at Lock. (Chapters 7, 36, 409, 581, 678, 821; Epilogue 3)
She is impatient, profane, teasing, and sometimes rash. Emma rebuffs Fabian with theatrical mockery, interrupts plans when she sees a direct route forward, and will jump into a losing fight once concealment has failed. The same disposition can become courage and social leadership: she breaks tension in the academy dorm, notices when friends are spiraling, and says difficult things directly when silence would be easier. Her instincts are often good—she senses surveillance, recognizes Jasper's bait, and lures a demon out of hiding—but her desire not to appear weak can make her overcommit. (Chapters 36–38, 64, 254, 409–412, 829–840)
Emma's central insecurity is dependence. Failing to contribute in training, losing resources to Jasper, being paralyzed, and watching others surrender rewards for her all feed a fear that she is dead weight. She answers that fear through relentless work, though the story repeatedly shows the danger of using pain as proof of worth. Over time she becomes more willing to accept tactical limits and help from others without surrendering agency. Her kindness is clearest when no battle is involved: she supports Melissa without condescension, preserves concern for the wounded even while exhausted, and patiently turns children's mistakes into encouragement at the orphanage. (Chapters 148–160, 198, 419–475, 581, 607, 754, 775, 844; Epilogue 3)
Powers and abilities
Emma is a human mana user on the setting's letter-rank ladder. Her advancement raises her physical performance, mana output, and ability to withstand stronger environments and opponents, but rank is not treated as invulnerability: superior pressure can injure her without direct contact, sealed mana removes most of her combat advantage, dense demonic energy exhausts her, and Prince-level enemies overwhelm her even after she reaches the upper S ranks. (Chapters 38, 69, 581, 651, 775, 821, 839–851)
Dual-short-sword combat
Emma's principal discipline is close-range combat with paired short swords. She alternates the blades in a flowing, dance-like sequence, using one attack to create the angle for the next rather than treating them as two independent weapons. Mana can be redirected into a blade for a heavier opening slash, while her later speed produces afterimages and lets her stab, slash, and reposition through a continuous sequence. These qualities make her especially effective when another fighter controls the opponent's attention: against a Marquis-ranked demon, she enters from behind, withdraws by kicking off its body, and reappears from another angle when it counters. (Chapters 66, 69, 148, 418, 585, 754)
The style depends on proximity, mobility, and sustained physical control. Emma is vulnerable when a stronger enemy's pressure arrests her approach, when surrounding forces deny her room, or when emotion pushes her into a direct attack against an opponent above her tier. She can use a conventional one-handed sword in an emergency—after Ryan lends her one, she tests its balance, decapitates several demons, and disables others for interrogation—but both Ryan and Emma recognize that it is not her preferred weapon. Her latest demonstrated S+ output therefore does not erase the equipment and matchup assumptions of her twin-blade training. (Chapters 37–38, 69, 418, 821, 839–840)
Mana control, speed, and core targeting
Emma's mana initially manifests as a yellow hue during combat. She uses reinforcement to accelerate her body and strengthen her cuts, reaching movement speeds that lower-ranked allies cannot sustain and eventually moving fast enough to leave visible afterimages. Her perception also lets her feel mana and demonic energy in the environment and, at close range, locate a demon's core beside her blade; destroying that core kills the demon. The corpus demonstrates these effects but does not name a unique personal mana manual or explain a separate sensory technique, so they are best understood as applications of her trained mana control rather than an independently established power. (Chapters 64, 69, 418, 581, 634–645, 754, 829, 839)
Speed does not guarantee safe reaction against every tier. Emma can bait and execute ordinary demons, keep pace with other S-rank-range humans, and cross a cell before multiple enemies respond, but Marquis and Prince-class opponents can break her formation or counter her before she completes an attack. Her strongest scenes consequently rely on judgment—choosing an opening, rotating with allies, or attacking a structural target—rather than raw speed alone. (Chapters 585–587, 637–651, 821, 839–851)
Physical conditioning and endurance
Waylan's training and the Fallen Pit turn conditioning into part of Emma's advancement method. The principle he teaches is that a stronger body can tolerate more mana, improving the foundation on which later ranks are built. Emma applies it even when imprisoned with her mana sealed, performing more than a thousand push-ups and continuing to train without access to her usual abilities. The method improves durability and supports rank growth, but it requires time and does not replace mana; when the surrounding demonic energy makes her pale and breathless, rest is still necessary. (Chapters 469–475, 562, 581, 775)
Her endurance is as psychological as it is physical. She survives months in a dungeon that will not reopen until enough monsters are killed, keeps fighting through long operations, and can continue after injury with potions or allied support. That persistence can become self-destructive: after Kevin vanishes, she trains until her lungs and muscles burn because physical pain briefly suppresses grief she cannot remember. The resulting practice is evidence of resolve, not an unexplained power-up, and the corpus does not assign it a named technique. (Chapters 562, 581, 587–601, 645–651, 754)
Tactical awareness and teamwork
Emma is an instinctive but increasingly disciplined battlefield reader. She notices hidden watchers, tests suspicious routes, pretends to accept Jasper's bait, and later lures a stalking demon by feigning frustration. In teams she can switch between assault and support: she helps search for and assess wounded companions, attacks in rhythm with Kevin and Jin, and accepts Amanda's covering fire. Her effectiveness rises when allies create openings, while her major failures occur when she commits before the full threat is known. (Chapters 64–70, 409–413, 576, 585–600, 829–840)
She also develops administrative and field-command competence. As Kevin's secretary she organizes access and scheduling, and in the later migration she is entrusted with an operation of her own. These are practical skills rather than formal power-system stages, but they mark her growth from the academy group's social connector into someone relied upon to coordinate others. (Chapters 678–723, 798–800)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| E- rank, bordering E | 38 | Her earliest explicit human mana rank; she withstands a C-range senior's pressure but suffers internal injuries from the two-rank gap. |
| E rank | 160 | Reaches E after sustained academy and team training alongside Amanda. |
| C+ rank, nearing B- | 440, 469 | Despite Jasper restricting her resources, she reaches C+; after recovery she agrees to attain B- before entering the B-ranked Fallen Pit. |
| S-rank range | 637 | After Waylan's training and more than half a year in the family dungeon, she is grouped with Jin as an S-rank-range fighter; the intervening B- through A-rank attainments occur off page. |
| S+ rank | 805 | First explicit confirmation of S+; at age twenty-eight she is already approaching SS-, and later kills groups of demons with an unfamiliar borrowed sword. |
Relationships
- Kevin Voss: Emma first helps Kevin navigate Lock and becomes the social bridge that draws him into the dorm group. Their friendship deepens through training, grief, and her family crisis; Kevin pursues the elven tear after her spinal injury, while Emma supports him through Ren's apparent death. They eventually acknowledge their love, reconcile after Kevin tries to distance himself, and work together in the Alliance. Kevin's disappearance leaves an absence that survives the erasure of his name from her conscious memory, and his postwar return to the orphanage offers them a second life together. (Chapters 36–38, 230–290, 418–475, 581–601, 631–723, 727–754; Epilogue 3)
- Waylan Roshfield: Emma loves her absent father and knows him in the human domain as Oliver. His return saves her from Jasper's plot and gives her the training and resources needed to enter the Fallen Pit. Ren later establishes that Oliver is the same person he knew as Waylan, the Protector of the Seat of Diligence, and that he killed Emma's mother and valued Emma partly for her talent. Learning this after his death destroys the image on which Emma relied; rebuilding the orphanage becomes her attempt to address the legacy without adopting his choices. (Chapters 290, 301–302, 411–475, 671, 747–770, 798, 842; Epilogue 3)
- Amanda Stern: Amanda is one of Emma's closest friends and describes Emma as her first friend when she fears losing her after the tournament injury. They train together, share the academy dorm, support Melissa, fight across the later wars, and continue to confide in each other. Emma's talkative directness often offsets Amanda's reserve, while Amanda can stop Emma's most dangerous impulses and recognize when rest or caution is needed. (Chapters 36–39, 58–70, 148–160, 194–254, 398–460, 607, 631–680, 747–805)
- Ren Dover: Emma initially treats Ren as an abrasive weakling and later suspects him when Jin is injured, but repeated evidence that he protects the group turns mistrust into durable respect. Ren and Kevin sacrifice tournament rewards to secure her recovery, and Emma later fights in operations under Ren's command. Their trust fractures at the end because he hides Waylan's death and Kevin's identity; Emma finally forces him to restore the memories and truths she needs rather than accept protection through ignorance. (Chapters 7, 69–70, 194–254, 409–475, 562–601, 634–651, 747–842)
- Jin Horton: Jin is a dorm mate, training peer, and later war comrade. Emma's immediate attempt to protect him at Hollberg shows how quickly she accepts responsibility for the group, while their later S-rank-range missions demonstrate a more balanced partnership built on comparable mobility and combat experience. (Chapters 36, 64–70, 148–161, 194–254, 409–460, 576–600, 631–651, 773–805)
- Melissa Hall: Emma has known Melissa since childhood and understands how strongly Melissa seeks her father's approval. Though their exchanges remain sharp and sarcastic, Emma credits Melissa's inventions, takes custody of the potions Melissa wants removed, and fights using Melissa's temporary enhancements. Their relationship combines blunt criticism with a willingness to intervene when the other is in danger of self-destruction. (Chapters 36, 58, 148–254, 398–460, 576–607, 631–651)
- Aaron Rhinestone: Aaron's concealed attack during their tournament match damages Emma's spine and leaves her temporarily unable to walk. The injury is the clearest physical consequence of Emma underestimating an unstable opponent and becomes the immediate cause of Kevin and Ren surrendering their tournament rewards for her recovery. (Chapters 418–469)
- Ryan Polive: Ryan frees Emma from confinement in the Pillar of Greed, supplies a healing potion and temporary sword, and relies on her S+ strength during their escape. Emma trusts his infiltration plan despite finding his methods unsettling, then fights beside him to disrupt the demons' prisoner-extraction site. (Chapters 838–844)
Items
- Emma's Short Swords: Emma's persistent signature weapons. Their paired balance supports her alternating, high-speed style, and she carries them through academy training, the Issanor tournament, the demon-world campaign, and the Pillar of Greed. The supplied corpus does not give either blade an individual name or establish unique artifact mechanics. (Chapters 66, 69, 148, 418, 585–600, 754, 805, 829–830)
- Elven Tear: The tournament prize sought to repair Emma's spinal injury. Kevin resolves to win it, Ren forfeits after defeating him, and Emma later confirms that their sacrificed rewards were used so Kevin could give it to her. It restores her ability to walk, but it is a consumed cure rather than equipment she retains. (Chapters 419, 440–469)
- Borrowed sword: Ryan lends Emma an ordinary sword after freeing her in the Pillar of Greed. Although it is not her preferred short-sword pair, she adapts immediately and uses it during the escape before Ryan temporarily takes it back as part of a prisoner disguise. (Chapters 839–840)
