Octavious Hall

Octavious Hall, also spelled Octavius, is the hero known as the Sovereign and the long-standing public pinnacle of the human domain. His pursuit of power costs him his emotions and devastates his relationship with his daughter, Melissa. The same pride that makes him a ruthless political leader eventually becomes the quality he overcomes when he gives up power, health, and life to save her.

Biography

The Sovereign and the politics of sacrifice

Octavious enters the story as humanity's number-one hero, able to silence the Union's strongest leaders with a word and identify that the Monolith leader before them is only a remote body. Yet he also admits that the enemy leader is stronger. Faced with a proposed truce in exchange for Ren, Octavious treats a D-ranked outsider as an acceptable sacrifice for humanity and tells a dissenting head that sympathy is unnecessary. The decision establishes both his institutional power and the moral cost of reducing every person to strategic value. (Chapters 284–285)

That calculus follows from a deeper personal sacrifice. To pursue power, Octavious gives up his emotions, then leaves himself notes instructing an emotionally empty future self how to smile at his child, pat her head, and show affection. He retains the notes without understanding them and stalls at SS+ because the missing part of his soul blocks further progress. His public listlessness is therefore not simple composure; it is the visible consequence of a choice that won status while hollowing out the man and father who desired it. (Chapters 614–617)

Tournament influence and conflict with Ren

At the interspecies tournament Octavious represents humanity despite being visibly weaker than the other races' leaders. He observes Ren's magic cards, follows the new technology's commercial implications, and later bargains with Ren amid the tournament's political maneuvering. Their relationship remains adversarial: Ren uses information and public leverage to protect himself, while Octavious uses Union authority and Aaron as an expendable asset. The resulting deal helps frame Aaron as 876, but it also gives Ren room to operate rather than delivering him to the Union. (Chapters 403–445, 474)

Ren later publicly exposes the Union's earlier willingness to sacrifice him while Octavious sits beside Douglas. Octavious can silence a hall through pressure, but cannot suppress the disclosure without worsening the institution's position; Ren explicitly relies on allied leaders and public scrutiny to limit retaliation. The confrontation turns their conflict from private bargaining into a challenge to Octavious's legitimacy, while his later reputation as the one human knowledgeable about soul damage reveals how closely his lost emotions, stalled rank, and authority are entangled. Kevin's bargain and the human alliance

By Chapter 614 Octavious remains SS+ and cannot even sense the approach of SSS-. Kevin eventually offers him a path beyond that limit in exchange for support. Octavious helps conceal the purge of Monolith spies, controls the assembly while coordinated explosions damage the enemy through its contracts, and unexpectedly nominates Kevin Voss rather than himself to lead the new alliance. This is a genuine political reversal for a man known to hoard authority, although it still includes his old willingness to risk injured civilians for strategic gain, provoking Douglas's open condemnation. (Chapters 614–617, 664–677)

After Waylan's death releases the Protectors' stored power, a wave of mana reaches Earth and a blue orb restores memories and emotions Octavious had surrendered. He cries, recognizes himself as free, and within a day finally breaks through to SSS-. The breakthrough is not presented as ordinary training alone: the denser mana brings him to the threshold, while the restored soul removes the defining absence that had kept him from feeling the next rank. He then continues to support the alliance in its attacks on the demon domain. (Chapters 769–777)

Pride, Melissa, and death

The restoration forces Octavious to confront what emotional absence did to Melissa Hall. Her memories show a child seeking praise for scientific achievement and receiving contempt, and a student driven to extreme training only to be condemned for placing second. Near the end, Pride amplifies Melissa's resentment until she wants him to beg. Octavious refuses the performance, but finally rests his head on her shoulder and tells her that he has always been proud of her achievements before leaving to fight. The admission is late and incomplete, yet it is the first honest repair he offers. (Chapters 589–590, 832)

Octavious then deceives Prince Adrian by requesting a demonic contract, tears the contract apart once close enough, and shatters an orb containing Akashic laws supplied earlier by Ren. The borrowed laws bind the Prince only briefly and rapidly age Octavious into a frail old man because his body is not suited to them. He spends that remaining interval looking at Melissa, says goodbye, and disappears into the battle. By the second epilogue his grave records a death in 2073; Melissa visits it, rejects the easy claim that he was a loving father, and nevertheless chooses to release the hatred that bound her to him. Appearance and personality

Octavious is introduced with brown hair, languid eyes apparently devoid of emotion, and an aura of oppression and destruction so dense that mana becomes visible with each breath. His controlled posture and low voice dominate rooms without overt motion. After his emotions return, that blankness gives way to tears and ordinary expressions. Borrowed Akashic laws then shrink and age his body within moments, leaving him frail and unsteady. (Chapters 284, 769, 833)

He is proud, ambitious, calculating, and accustomed to treating power as the measure of worth. Those traits make him an effective sovereign and a destructive parent: he accepts sacrifice for aggregate survival, demands first place from Melissa, and initially craves authority. He is not static. Kevin persuades him to support another leader, restored emotions let him recognize the damage he caused, and his final plan rejects both a Prince's temptation and personal survival. His redemption is sacrificial rather than exculpatory; Melissa's epilogue makes clear that one final act does not erase years of neglect. (Chapters 284, 590, 668–669, 769, 832–860)

Powers and abilities

Overwhelming mana and spatial force

As the Sovereign, Octavious can suppress rooms of elite rankers through aura alone, carry a quiet command to every listener, and tear open space for a remote body to enter the Union meeting. He can disintegrate demons with projected mana and physically move a target with a gesture. These displays establish enormous output and control, but not invincibility: the Monolith leader's remote body is already stronger in Chapter 284, SS+ becomes a hard ceiling for years, and foreign racial leaders visibly exceed him at the tournament. (Chapters 284–285, 403, 486, 831)

Soul sacrifice and restoration

Octavious's power pursuit involves surrendering his emotions, a soul condition he later identifies as the likely reason he cannot advance. The sacrifice produces extreme detachment but does not erase buried memory or the practical recognition that Melissa deserves care, hence the old notes he keeps. A Protector-derived blue orb restores his memories and emotions when Waylan's death releases stored power. The restoration coincides with a surge in ambient mana and precedes his SSS- breakthrough, but the corpus does not separate the precise share contributed by the soul repair from the planetary mana wave. (Chapters 614, 769–771)

Borrowed Akashic laws

Ren gives Octavious a small portion of Akashic laws before the migration. In the Pillar, Octavious releases them by shattering a rune-covered orb at close range, flooding the world with golden runes that temporarily immobilize Prince Adrian. The technique is powerful enough to create an opening against a Prince but explicitly temporary: the runes dim each second, and the laws do not belong to Octavious. Using them consumes his vitality, rapidly turning his prime body into that of a frail old man and leaving him unable to sustain the effect. (Chapters 833–834)

Political command

Octavious's non-combat power is control of the Union and its rankers. He can convene the heads, calm assemblies, conceal sensitive operations, and redirect enough support to make Kevin a viable alliance leader. Authority is not mind control and can be resisted: Douglas challenges him, Ren publicly corners him, and the final alliance chooses leaders through a vote. His command works because strength, reputation, and institutional access reinforce one another. (Chapters 284, 486–487, 664–677)

• Melissa Hall: Melissa is Octavious's daughter and the principal victim of his emotional sacrifice. He dismisses her achievements and demands first place; after recovering his feelings, he finally says he was proud of her and spends his borrowed laws to protect her. Her later mourning preserves both the injury and the complicated value of that last choice (Chapters 395, 589–590, 614, 832–860).
• Ren Dover: Octavious first approves sacrificing Ren, then bargains with and politically opposes him. Later Ren supplies the Akashic laws used in Octavious's final act, reflecting a shift from mutual hostility to necessary trust (Chapters 284, 429–487, 669, 833–834).
• Kevin Voss: Kevin offers a path past Octavious's SS+ barrier in exchange for political support. Octavious then abandons his expected claim to leadership and nominates Kevin as Alliance Head (Chapters 668–677).
• Douglas: Douglas cooperates with Octavious in human defense but rejects his willingness to use civilians as instruments, confronting him in the alliance assembly (Chapters 486–487, 668–669).

• Akashic law orb: A white orb with rotating golden runes, containing a small quantity of laws supplied by Ren. Octavious shatters it at close range to bind Prince Adrian; the laws are consumed and exact a fatal physical cost (Chapters 833–834).
• Family photograph and notes: Octavious keeps a photograph of young Melissa over handwritten reminders describing how to care for her after losing his emotions. They preserve the intentions of the self he sacrificed even when he no longer understands them (Chapter 614).
