The S-rank Defensive Artifacts are three small protective pins purchased by Ren Dover as insurance for a dangerous portal journey.

History

Precautions at the unstable portal

Concerned that Kevin's system problems may signal interference with their mission, Ren produces three black pins engraved in gold. He attaches one to himself, hands one to Kevin Voss, and places the third on the unconscious Jin Horton. The artifacts consume most of Ren's proceeds from the magic cards, but he accepts the expense because each could prevent a sudden fatal strike; he asks Kevin to return his pin if the journey proves uneventful. Properties and functions

• Each pin is an S-rank defensive artifact that functions for one activation and then stops working. The triggering condition and exact defensive form are not described. (Chapter 561)
• Ren estimates that wearing one should prevent even an S-rank attacker from killing him in a single blow. This is his assessment rather than a demonstrated durability test, and the corpus does not establish protection against repeated attacks. (Chapter 561)
• The pins are compact black devices with golden engravings and can be attached to clothing, including on an unconscious wearer. (Chapter 561)
