Kang Shin

Kang Shin is Earth's Hero, a spear-wielding dungeon explorer, and the founder of Revival. His childhood desire to become strong enough to protect his family expands into a refusal to let any world be sacrificed for another, ultimately placing him against the enemies of Earth and the design behind the dungeon itself. (Chapters 1, 136, and 348–352)

Biography

Awakening and the First Dungeon

Shin grows up admiring his father, Kang Yungoong, and wanting the strength of a hero, but the training meant to realize that dream isolates him from ordinary childhood. Yungoong subjects him to survival exercises and the Kang family's martial arts from age eight; by fifteen, Shin is more than two meters tall, overwhelmingly muscular, and strong enough to defeat his father, yet he still lacks the qi both of them seek. When Yungoong appoints him as a dungeon explorer, Shin accepts immediately because the dungeon makes their seemingly impossible ambition real. (Chapters 0–2)

His first years expose the difference between raw ability and usable power. Unable to accumulate mana, he repeatedly fails against the Orc Lord and spends three years on the fifth floor rather than abandon his goal. His eventual victory begins a pattern of deliberate repetition: he farms the boss for compressing elixirs, remakes his body, earns the unwanted nickname “Crown Prince,” and chooses rewards that let him keep advancing. The Heroic Spirit Peruta then imprints Peruta Circuit into him, giving him the mana pathway and spear instruction his family could not provide, while contracts with Peika and other elementals broaden his fighting style beyond physical technique. (Chapters 2–18 and 28–30)

Shin initially treats the dungeon as a personal ascent, but the twentieth-floor Lizard Knight raid makes him confront what an explorer owes a party. He studies the boss alone, divides the raiders by function, places himself at the front, and adjusts after Ren's mistimed intervention lets an earthquake kill four members. Rather than reduce the disaster to one man's fault, Shin later trains Ren through repeated battles until strength is governed by timing and judgment. This establishes the demanding but protective leadership he eventually brings to Revival. (Chapters 35–40 and 46)

Field Dungeons and Revival

Shin's early experience outside solitary climbing also changes how he values cooperation. He clears an Event Dungeon beside his father by studying its scoring rules and preventing the boss from evolving, then rejoins Ellos and Palludia for the Giant Ghoul raid. When other explorers seek status while avoiding the risk required to progress, Shin becomes angry, but does not simply discard them: he challenges Ellos to lead more decisively and recognizes Palludia's resolve. These encounters teach him to judge allies by growth and responsibility rather than by a single failure. (Chapters 51–57)

When Event Dungeons begin spilling monsters onto Earth, Shin can no longer keep his two lives separate. He uses Otus' Secret to act publicly as the S-ranker Yeon Hwawoo, reports that dungeon bosses can hide among civilians, and asks Hwaya to corroborate the danger. In Britain he joins her against the Windermere Field Dungeon, rejects Joshua Brightman's attempts to dominate the response, and judges potential allies by what they do under pressure. The disguise protects his family and explorer identity, but the public intervention marks his first deliberate attempt to change how Earth prepares for monsters. (Chapters 84–100)

The fall of the Luka continent turns that responsibility into a cross-world commitment. When Palludia flees after her Hero dies, Shin races to qualify as a Dimensional Mercenary despite warnings that Earth's Hero should not risk himself elsewhere. He enters the occupied world to rescue survivors, discovers that Palludia's sister and many knights chose the Demon Lord, and acts against them when their betrayal endangers Palludia and the remaining mercenaries. Bringing Palludia to Earth cannot restore what she lost, but the mission teaches Shin that a Hero's failure creates political despair, collaboration with invaders, and deaths that strength alone cannot undo afterward. (Chapters 110–125)

Ciara offers Shin funds, followers, and a hierarchy built around protecting the Hero, but he rejects a system that makes other people disposable for his sake. He first forms Revival almost casually, then consciously expands it after missions with Hwaya, Su Ye-Eun, Sumire, Walker, and his father prove that mutual trust makes them stronger. The guild crosses the boundaries between the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Dungeons, and Shin gives members room to volunteer rather than treating his authority as ownership. His answer to the fear of losing Earth's Hero is therefore not isolation: it is to become overwhelmingly strong while helping capable companions grow beside him. (Chapters 127–143)

World Crises and Heroic Growth

Revival's early campaigns force Shin to translate that principle into public action. While he trains in Beyond, he authorizes Hwaya to lead volunteers against hundreds of Event Dungeons; after returning, he uses the guild's record to pressure governments that hoped to preserve profitable gates. He accepts that Revival's strength will attract attention but refuses Ciara's proposed rule through reverence. Instead, he frames the guild as an independent force that will do what official organizations avoid, using its reputation to protect civilians and expose dangerous incentives without claiming their countries or wealth. (Chapters 143–157)

Earth's Double Crisis makes the cost personal. Shin learns that two invading forces are targeting Earth, refuses the possibility of hiding in the dungeon, and states that survival bought by abandoning his family and friends would have no value. When Luca Bruno charms Kang Yua, Shin trusts Walker's protection, breaks the charm, defeats the attacker, and gives the extracted monster-control ability to Yua instead of hoarding it. His concern then widens again on the Panan continent: he prepares specifically for the El Patiz's possession, protects refugees, and helps Ren confront the enemy wearing Panan's former Hero rather than letting his friend carry that burden alone. (Chapters 165–180 and 186–197)

That mission also changes how Shin understands preparation. He synthesizes Absolute Soul not merely to increase his statistics, but to prevent parasites, possession, corrosion, and mental control from turning him against the people he came to save. He uses its hidden protection to bait the El Patiz into exposing itself and combines it with Caduceus to separate the invader from its host. Back on Earth, he expands Revival, trains its members, and tells Ren that a Hero can acknowledge fear without surrendering to it because responsibility is shared through action. His later creation of Overlord gives that belief a power capable of contending with enemies beyond the dungeon's ordinary scale. (Chapters 189–219)

Guardians and World Enemies

Revival's reclamation of the Philippines is Shin's first campaign as the unquestioned leader of a world-scale force. He coordinates Plene's attraction, his Evil Eyes, Yua's beasts, Daisy's undead, and the guild's specialists to clear the archipelago, then refuses to retreat when the Lava King's army gathers inside Bulusan Volcano. Shin screens weaker members out of the decisive fight, depends on Lotte's charge and Hwaya's flames, and activates Overlord against the king. The victory costs succubus lives and nearly kills him; accepting the Guardian title does not erase those losses, so he uses Revival's influence to help Philippine survivors reclaim their country rather than take its resources as payment. (Chapters 221–233)

Learning that the dungeon's administrators are failed Heroes complicates his trust in the institution. Shin sees how dependence on borrowed power, bargains made after defeat, and fear of loss can trap even people who once tried to save worlds. During the Edias mission, Ellos leads him into a trap meant to destroy the enemy with Kahar's accumulated mana; Shin detects the betrayal, freezes Ellos before he can strike, and refuses Hazen's proposed alliance. Ellos ultimately detonates the power himself, and Shin survives by mastering Peruta Circuit amid the catastrophe, but he ends the relationship rather than romanticizing a friend's willingness to sacrifice everyone around him. (Chapters 234–240 and 267–276)

Shin responds by making Revival less dependent on the dungeon. He teaches members mana methods, trains Ren and Paul, and studies how to retain their own strength when administrative support is cut off. That preparation proves essential when the Five Kings manipulate gates and divide the guild: Shin defeats the Beast King without relying on the system to absorb its power, recruits the long-isolated Kain to breach the Fear King's prison, and reaches Hwaya before the king can overwhelm her. The Death King's attack still devastates Vatican City and kills succubi, teaching Shin that superior strength cannot prevent every loss; he moves vulnerable family into the dungeon and changes deployment rather than pretending the same tactics remain safe. (Chapters 276–300)

Final Wave and the Dungeon's End

Facing Crimson Hell and Lilith turns Shin's suspicion of the dungeon into a method. He realizes that Absolute Soul and Overlord are guides toward powers he must understand personally, not finished gifts to be used blindly. He absorbs Crimson Hell's avaricious mana, resists Lilith's authority over desire, and begins making hostile powers obey his own soul and circulation. This growth does not make him indiscriminately cruel: knowledge that invaders were forced into a manufactured struggle changes how he sees many monsters, even as he remains willing to kill world enemies who continue threatening others. (Chapters 301–307)

On Earth, Shin clears monster territories while preparing Revival for a final land transmittance. His visible horn, halo, and overwhelming Evil Eyes lead the public to treat him as something beyond human, a response he finds frightening rather than flattering. He nevertheless uses that credibility to order evacuations, map the danger, and organize guild rotations while continuing Beyond. Battles with the Eliminator and Death Lord refine his control over abilities not mediated by the dungeon, and his confrontation with the hidden dragon finally lets him wield Enigma without activating Overlord, turning a temporary transformation's sample into his own accessible power. (Chapters 308–340)

Shin defeats the Demon Lord with Revival's support and then challenges Sherafina, having concluded that the dungeon and its wars were arranged to concentrate worlds' powers into him. Ciara absorbs Sherafina first, but Shin rejects both women's attempts to decide the fate of worlds around a chosen savior and takes control of the fused power without accepting their intended role. He returns power to Ren, Daisy, and Kain, plans to separate all connected worlds and restore their powers, and cleans Earth's final monster wave with Revival. Alive at twenty-three, he proceeds with weddings on Earth and in Fairy Garden before leaving to continue that work rather than taking permanent rule over the dungeon. (Chapters 341–352)

After the weddings, Peika reveals that an ancient elemental—herself—had connected worlds, selected Ciara as an intermediary, and planned to concentrate their powers in the master she hoped to make immortal. Her contract with Shin changed that priority until his unhappiness mattered more than the plan, leading her to ignore Ciara's dying appeal. The confession places Sherafina and Ciara's schemes inside an older design that Shin had not understood, but he responds by accepting Peika's continued help rather than treating the bond as another authority to seize. (Chapter 352)

Appearance and personality

Shin's childhood training first gives him an extreme physique: by fifteen he is over two meters tall, almost entirely muscle, and repeatedly compared to a gorilla or orc despite inheriting his mother's handsome face. Compressing elixirs later reduce him to roughly 190 centimeters and give him a leaner appearance whose strength is less obvious at a glance. By the final crisis, his absorption of nonhuman powers leaves a reddish-black horn on his forehead and a visible halo-like ring, changes he chooses not to conceal even when they make ordinary people regard him as no longer fully human. (Chapters 1, 8, and 314–337)

He is direct, competitive, and often comically literal, but his apparent simplicity hides acute combat judgment. Shin learns attack patterns quickly, dislikes losing freedom more than he fears danger, and has little patience for prestige unaccompanied by courage. His protectiveness can become controlling when family is threatened, while his habit of carrying responsibility himself worries his companions. Over time he grows from a solitary climber into a leader who delegates to trusted allies, accepts that he cannot prevent every death, and measures power by whether it preserves other people's right to choose their own lives. (Chapters 36, 57, 141–143, 166, and 214)

Powers and abilities

Shin combines inherited martial arts, dungeon advancement, elemental contracts, gods' true names, synthesized skills, and powers taken from world enemies. The dungeon initially translates many of these abilities into skills, but his later development centers on understanding their underlying mana and authorities well enough to function when Sherafina's support is absent. (Chapters 217, 276, 303, and 319–340)

Kang family martial arts and Peruta Circuit

Yungoong teaches Shin spear techniques, jujitsu, survival, and physical conditioning years before he becomes an explorer. These foundations let him read weight shifts, redirect superior force, concentrate power into a single point, and fight even when his mana is exhausted. They also impose real physical demands: early combinations of Heroic Strike and Divine Speed threaten to tear his arm, while reckless training and attacks can drain both health and mana. His technical adaptability, rather than statistics alone, is why he can use a spear, glaive, unarmed throws, and improvised projectiles against opponents with different bodies and defenses. (Chapters 1, 20, 33, and 36)

Peruta Circuit is imprinted into Shin by the summoned spearman Peruta after his first Orc Lord victory. The circuit circulates and gathers mana through a spiral pathway, restores balance after overexertion, supports Tempest's rotating current, and eventually lets him absorb environmental or hostile energy while fighting. It works more slowly outside the dungeon at first, requires long practice rather than automatic levels, and can overload his body when too much energy enters at once. During Kahar's detonation, Shin masters it under mortal pressure and reforges his body; later it coordinates Enigma, world-enemy mana, and his other powers even where dungeon support is suppressed. (Chapters 10–17, 192, 229, and 275–279)

Heroic Strike grows from the Kang family's Heaven Collapsing Strike: Shin concentrates physical force and mana at the spear tip, with cost and power increasing according to charge. The dungeon recognizes it as his unique created skill, but he repeatedly extends it through technique—combining it with Divine Speed, projecting it as a compressed shot, and later forming transparent aura dense enough to contend with world enemies. Its recoil and consumption remain meaningful limits, particularly when amplified by Sacrifice or speed. Wind King's Rage complements it as a sustained charge that gathers wind and lightning until Shin releases a decisive final blow, though continuing the charge exposes him to terrain, restraints, and any failure of his mount or defenses. (Chapters 20–23, 36, 188, 225–230, and 271)

Elemental contracts and combined techniques

As an Elementalist, Shin contracts lightning elemental Peika, ice elemental Ruyue, wind elemental Sharana, and metal elemental Dortu. Spirit Aura infuses an elemental into his weapon or body, consuming mana while adding the elemental's properties; materialization lets an elemental act independently at much greater ongoing cost. Peika supplies lightning and paralysis, Ruyue creates cold domains and layered barriers, Sharana strengthens movement and wind magic, and Dortu transforms and controls metal. Their peak cooperation depends on intimacy and communication, not simple ownership, and Shin regularly withdraws them when continued manifestation would endanger them or exhaust him. (Chapters 28–30, 42–45, 134, 190–192, and 314–330)

Elemental Tempest is Shin's fusion of Peruta's Tempest with his Elementalist class. The circuit forms a rotating mana current around his spear, nearby elementals join it, and the released storm tears through groups over a broad path. It initially consumes half his maximum mana, making repeated use impractical without recovery, and it is less suitable than Heroic Strike for concentrating force on one durable target. Shin later strengthens it with named elementals, Mad Typhoon's rotation, and environmental mana, using it to clear aerial armies and protect allies while they address a stronger enemy. His finest elemental attacks are therefore coordinated applications of the circuit and contracts, not an unexplained innate command over every element. (Chapters 29–30, 36, 189, and 196)

Absolute Soul, Overlord, and Enigma

Shin creates Absolute Soul by synthesizing Soul Guard, Heavy Armor Mastery, Death Counter, and Mana Absorption in preparation for the El Patiz. It raises the “league” of his soul, strengthens physical, magical, and mental offense and defense, makes him immune to mental status effects, possession, parasites, corrosion, control, mutations, and curses, and absorbs a fixed amount of mana through contact or defense. Its protection enables his trap on Panan, but it does not make him omnipotent: stronger opponents can still injure him physically, and before he fully adapts to the skill Sherafina can exploit a direct meeting to plant a mental suggestion. He later recognizes the synthesized skill as a foundation and integrates its function into his own soul. (Chapters 193–197, 291–303, and 351)

Overlord is a transcendent synthesis that originally activates once per day for five minutes. It covers Shin in Enigma, enlarges him and his weapon, triples his health and mana, doubles his statistics, and causes the incomprehensible mana to suppress, dominate, or interfere with other powers. The form is exceptionally strong but was initially temporary, and its multiplication means it benefits greatly from the permanent mana and authorities Shin gains later. Peruta Circuit provides the control needed to shape its amorphous armor into a defensive whirlpool and offensive edge. By the dragon battle, Shin can convert and command Enigma without invoking Overlord, so its defining power is no longer limited to the original transformation. (Chapters 217, 229–230, and 338–346)

Hero's power, gods' names, and acquired authorities

As Earth's Hero, Shin carries part of the world's power and has an instinctive relationship with powers capable of sustaining worlds. The role attracts support and danger but does not automatically make every choice correct; much of his growth comes from refusing the dungeon's assumption that a Hero should be preserved through other people's sacrifices. At the end, after taking the fused powers of Earth, Sherafina, and Lespina, he can separate and reassign worlds' powers, returning them to other Heroes and planning to dissolve the connections that forced worlds into invasion. This latest authority is his own controlled state, while the earlier dungeon titles and borrowed support are distinct from it. (Chapters 127–136, 211, 333, and 348–352)

Shin earns gods' true names through achievements, including Hermes, Zeus, and Shiva. Hermes grants speed, Talaria's flight, and Caduceus, whose paired powers can heal or overwrite damage under strict conditions; Divine Speed multiplies his movement for a short interval but consumes mana and originally lasts less than a second. Zeus contributes lightning and transformation, while Shiva supplies destructive power. These divine powers can be extracted, combined, or surrendered, and the corpus distinguishes them from Shin's innate technique: his finest attacks still require his aim, timing, body, and mana control, and by the conclusion he has returned or outgrown several borrowed forms. (Chapters 49, 112, 177–181, 275, and 343–347)

Shin also accumulates authorities from enemies and allies, including Evil Eyes of Petrification, chaos flame, death energy, Steel, Ultimate Avarice, and the power to control or assimilate hostile mana. The Evil Eyes can petrify living targets within his effective sight and later use Dortu's mirrors to cover vast areas, but sufficiently resistant or higher-league beings can endure them. Chaos flame persists on targets and combines otherwise incompatible energies, while Absolute Soul and Peruta Circuit filter absorbed power before it becomes usable. These abilities grow through interaction rather than replacing one another: by the final battles, Shin concentrates their shared purpose through Enigma and his soul instead of treating every acquired effect as a separate dungeon command. (Chapters 157, 178–181, 211–217, 303–314, and 339–347)

Relationships

  • Kang Yungoong: Shin's father is his first martial-arts teacher, the explorer who appoints him to the dungeon, and a recurring rival and ally. Shin resents the extremity of Yungoong's childhood training but inherits his competitive temperament and repeatedly trusts him in battles where family and world survival overlap. (Chapters 1–2, 40–57, and 331–347)
  • Kang Yua: Shin's younger sister is one of the people he most wants to protect, but he eventually supports her as a capable tamer rather than keeping her outside every danger. Her targeting by Luca Bruno makes the Hero conflict personal, while her later work with Revival shows how far both siblings have grown. (Chapters 1, 177–180, 220–233, and 314–337)
  • Loretta: Loretta begins as the Floor Shop administrator who advises and teases Shin, then becomes his sponsor, confidante, and partner. Their trust survives revelations about her past as a failed Hero and Sherafina's manipulation; Shin gives her the Death Lord's axe for protection, restores her as the temporary Dungeon Lord, and marries her in Fairy Garden. (Chapters 10, 46–50, 234, 300, 331, and 348–352)
  • Hwaya Eleni Mastiford: Hwaya is Shin's first major Earth-side collaborator and Revival's operational leader. Their relationship grows through public interventions, disagreements over risk, and victories neither could secure alone, culminating in mutual romantic commitment and marriage. (Chapters 85–100, 127–157, 221–233, and 335–352)
  • Peika: Peika is Shin's first contracted elemental and the source of much of his lightning power. Their bond progresses from weapon infusion to independent dragon-form combat, and the ending reveals that her concern for him shaped events far beyond what Shin understood during his ascent. (Chapters 28–30, 42–49, 329–340, and 352)
  • Palludia Gren Ehuir: Palludia changes from an argumentative childhood raid partner into a displaced princess who depends on Shin after Luka falls. He rescues her, accepts responsibility for killing her traitorous sister, and gives her a home and purpose within Revival; she later becomes one of his brides. (Chapters 4–7, 50–57, 110–143, and 352)
  • Su Ye-Eun: Ye-Eun is a college acquaintance whose stealth talent and devotion become central to Revival's battles. Shin initially cannot answer her feelings, but he respects her repeated choice to face world enemies and eventually marries her. (Chapters 23–26, 84, 141, 178–180, 314–347, and 352)
  • Daisy Ectradion: Daisy is a fellow Beyond explorer and one of Shin's most dependable specialists against undead and possession. He trusts her with dimensional missions, world-enemy battles, and difficult tactical decisions, later returns her world's power, and includes her among his brides. (Chapters 173, 186–197, 217–240, 284–352)
  • Sherafina: Sherafina presents herself as the dungeon's guiding power, but Shin gradually recognizes that she arranged floors, conflicts, and mental suggestions around cultivating him. He uses the dungeon while learning to function beyond it, then rejects her intended conclusion and takes responsibility for separating the worlds she connected. (Chapters 204–219, 301–340, and 348–352)

Items

  • Orc Lord's Glaive: Shin's first major Floor Master weapon replaces his worn wooden spear and materially improves his ability to lead raids. (Chapters 6–8)
  • Black Earthen Spear: An Arachne reward that increases his physical attributes and adds poison to his attacks; it serves as his principal spear before the Crimson line of weapons. (Chapters 44–57)
  • Crimson Chaotic Spear: The evolved, weapon-consuming Legend spear grows by absorbing other armaments and serves as Shin's main weapon until Lin replaces that stage with an unnamed platinum spear in Chapter 331. (Chapters 151, 227, 328, and 331)
  • Crimson Dragon Scale Armor: A bound armor set that increases his attributes, reduces critical vulnerability, strengthens charging attacks, and grants Crimson Roar. (Chapters 93–105)
  • Pure Black Desire: Shin's later Legend armor, whose Desire Thorn and Sacrifice trade danger and self-damage for recovery and amplified attacks. (Chapters 199–200 and 216–230)
  • Collector's Pocket Watch: The artifact behind his Skill Collector and Skill Mixer paths; it stores extracted skills and enables the syntheses that produce Absolute Soul and Overlord. (Chapters 30, 88, 182–193, and 217)
  • Otus' Secret: A concealing mask that changes identifying features and blocks information reading, allowing Shin to operate publicly as Yeon Hwawoo and Thunder Knight. (Chapters 40 and 84–100)
  • Deathblood Ring: A ring that can steal a portion of an enemy's mana or inflict blood contamination, becoming especially useful against the Mana Eater. (Chapters 149–151 and 190–193)
  • Death Lord's Axe: The weapon containing the Death Lord's surviving consciousness after Shin defeats him; Shin gives it to Loretta, and its resistance to Sherafina later helps protect her. (Chapters 328–331 and 348–352)
