Bai Xiaochun

Bai Xiaochun is the central cultivator of A Will Eternal. His fear of death begins as a determination to live forever, but repeated losses gradually turn that private wish into a resolve to preserve the people, homes, and worlds whose lives give eternity meaning.

Biography

Spirit Stream beginnings

Orphaned and raised in a village that finds his clever troublemaking exhausting, fifteen- or sixteen-year-old Bai Xiaochun leaves after hearing that immortal cultivation may grant eternal life. He repeatedly risks a terrifying lightning storm to summon Li Qinghou, yet keeps an axe ready when the immortal finally appears, establishing the tension that governs his early choices: he genuinely wants immortality, but wants it without surrendering his safety. Li Qinghou honors an old debt to Bai Xiaochun's family by bringing him into the Spirit Stream Sect, where the Ovens' warmth and Big Fatty Zhang's friendship give him his first new home. At the Ovens, Bai Xiaochun turns appetite, ingenuity, and fear into cultivation momentum. He bonds the mysterious Turtle-Wok, learns both Purple Qi Cauldron Control and the first stage of the Undying Live Forever Technique, and helps his elder brothers defend their livelihood from the Supervisors Department. Promotion to Fragrant Cloud Peak separates him from the Ovens, but he continues to support Big Fatty Zhang and pursues the Dao of medicine with competitive intensity. His theft of spirit-tail chickens and his experiments make him notorious, while his plant knowledge, medicine tests, and victories over rivals transform a seemingly weak village youth into a recognized sect disciple. His first mission outside the sect forces him to decide whether survival means fleeing alone. When the Luochen Clan betrays the Spirit Stream Sect group, Bai Xiaochun is terrified, but repeatedly stays to protect his companions, fights while over-drawing his strength, and helps carry the survivors home after Feng Yan's death. The experience gives his proclaimed devotion to the sect real substance: he accepts both grief and responsibility, and the sect honors the fallen rather than treating the mission as a simple triumph. Bai Xiaochun returns with greater prestige, but also with direct knowledge that the cultivation world can take lives he cares about. (Chapters 47–68)

Back in the sect, Bai Xiaochun seeks strength and recognition while preserving his instinctive limits. His medicine, spirit enhancements, and startling speed make him the south bank's little-turtle prodigy; in the Chosen battles, hostility from the north bank draws out his Waterswamp Kingdom and establishes him as a combatant rather than merely an eccentric apothecary. His later transfer to the north bank deepens that rivalry, yet it also leads him to raise Bruiser from the enhanced Beastbirth Seed and to study beast control. By the eve of Foundation Establishment, Bai Xiaochun has become both an institutional favorite and a recurring source of disaster whose need for affection and admiration sits beside genuine loyalty. Fallen Sword and Blood Stream

In the Fallen Sword Abyss, Bai Xiaochun enters the Foundation Establishment struggle wanting the strongest possible path but surrounded by Chosen willing to destroy one another's chances. He protects Spirit Stream disciples, fights off coordinated attacks, opens the first shackle of the Undying Codex, and seizes enough Heavenstring energy to achieve Heaven-Dao Foundation Establishment. The achievement makes him a legacy echelon-designate and a target. Rather than accept the sect's protection while war approaches, he later stages his death and uses the Nightcrypt Mask to infiltrate the Blood Stream Sect, hoping to learn its plans before the two sects annihilate each other. As Nightcrypt, he begins as an outsider whose survival depends on concealment, but his choices bind him to the very sect he entered as a spy. Blood Stream techniques complement his Undying Codex, his medicine causes both calamities and breakthroughs, and his inverse blood ancestral awakening makes him Middle Peak's Blood Master. Song Junwan first treats him as a useful and provocative subordinate, then becomes one of the relationships that complicate his divided loyalties. The Blood Ancestor legacy also reveals that Blood Master authority is not merely ceremonial: it lets Bai Xiaochun command Middle Peak's blood forces, making his disguise a position of real responsibility. Returning openly to the Spirit Stream Sect does not erase what he has become in the Blood Stream Sect. When the invasion begins, Bai Xiaochun exposes that Bai Xiaochun and Nightcrypt are the same person, invokes his Blood Master authority, and places himself between the armies. His refusal to choose one community's survival over the other's forces their patriarchs to negotiate rather than continue mutual slaughter. This is a decisive change in his role: the fearful disciple now uses relationships and legitimacy accumulated on both sides to stop a war, accepting scrutiny from each sect so that neither must be destroyed. He then goes to the front against the Profound Stream Sect because the new alliance still needs a shared future, not merely a ceasefire. Bai Xiaochun's medicine and combat power disrupt the enemy, while his status as both Spirit Stream Heaven-Dao cultivator and Middle Peak Blood Master becomes a rallying symbol. The campaign ends with surrender rather than extermination, and the four lower-reaches sects establish the River-Defying Sect. Bai Xiaochun accepts the burdensome public role of junior patriarch, gaining a home larger than either original sect but also becoming personally answerable for its survival. (Chapters 290–313)

River-Defying ascent

The River-Defying Sect's bid for the middle reaches places Bai Xiaochun in a conflict where the home he helped create can advance only by defeating the Sky River Court. He awakens and wields the Eternal Parasol, helps rouse the Blood Ancestor, and joins the assault rather than sheltering behind his title. Under pressure from Core Formation enemies, his Heaven-Dao Gold Core and Undying Heavenly King Core emerge in succession. These gains make him extraordinarily difficult to kill, but their immediate importance is communal: his breakthroughs help the new sect survive the war and claim a legitimate place in the middle reaches. Victory gives Bai Xiaochun prestige but not peace. He returns to medicine, strained romantic expectations, and Bruiser's growth while trying to enjoy the security his new status should provide. Strange disturbances and Bruiser's tribulation instead remind him that advancement changes the people and creatures around him as well as himself. Bai Xiaochun helps Bruiser reach a Beast King Violet Core and remains personally invested in the companion he raised, even as upstream demands begin to intrude on River-Defying life. The Starry Sky Dao Polarity Sect's legacy competition then pushes Bai Xiaochun into conflict despite his desire to stay safe at home. He uses the Living Mountain Incantation and his accumulated cultivation to survive rivals, cheating accusations, and a hostage crisis, and becomes one of the disciples selected to travel upstream. His departure is both an honor and a separation: the River-Defying Sect gains representation, while Bai Xiaochun loses the institutions that have protected him and must carry his junior-patriarch identity into a hierarchy where it guarantees little. Starry Sky and the Great Wall

Arriving in the Starry Sky Dao Polarity Sect without the resources or standing he enjoyed at home, Bai Xiaochun initially tries to keep his Dao protectors together. Hunger and institutional pressure scatter them, so he answers by building the Azure Dragon Society around his medicine and commercial instincts. The society's success brings money, enemies, and renewed contact with his companions; promotion to the Sky Quarter then gives him formal status but exposes him to the Hall of Devil Slayers. What begins as an attempt to avoid deprivation becomes another demonstration that Bai Xiaochun creates a community wherever an existing hierarchy leaves him insecure. (Chapters 381–416)

The sect's trials force him to measure ambition against danger. He repeatedly challenges the rainbow's tests, melds with a mountain, develops the Soul Convergence Pill, and faces the entity wearing Gongsun Wan'er's identity. During the voyage toward the Wildlands, his comic efforts to advise Zhao Tianjiao coexist with a growing awareness of the ship's supernatural threat. At the Great Wall he is conscripted for ten years, converting a journey undertaken for advancement into military service far from the River-Defying Sect. (Chapters 417–473)

Life in the Skin Flayers' army initially offends both his caution and his desire for comfort, but attacks on his comrades change his calculations. His volatile pill concocting makes him infamous, while the Aphrodisiac Pill and perfected Soul Convergence Pill become weapons against Wildlands forces. When a major battle threatens his unit, he explicitly sets aside fear of death, fights Nascent Soul opponents, and earns promotion through demonstrated command and combat power. By reaching the great circle of Gold Core and completing the True Undying Hex, he becomes a colonel whose reputation as "Devil Bai" rests on both destructive medicine and refusal to abandon his soldiers. The Wildlands and Bai Hao's name

Determined to become major general, Bai Xiaochun leaves the wall to hunt souls and takes command when promotions place the Third Corps under him. The search for a deva soul exposes betrayal from senior cultivators who regard him as expendable; isolated in the Wildlands, he survives by using the Nightcrypt Mask, befriending and competing with Zhou Yixing, and learning that Wildlands flame conjuring and his own spirit enhancement share a foundation. He wins a deva soul, becomes a terrestrial necromancer, and adopts the identity of Bai Hao so pursuers will not recognize him. (Chapters 508–579)

The borrowed name acquires moral weight when Bai Xiaochun reaches the Bai Clan and learns how the real Bai Hao, an exceptionally talented but illegitimate son, was abused and killed. Disguised as him, Bai Xiaochun exposes the clan's contempt, enters its ancestral land, takes a deva soul, and turns on the father who ordered Bai Hao's death. His intervention cannot restore the dead young man, but it prevents the clan from erasing his gifts. Flight to Giant Ghost City changes the disguise from a convenient shield into an obligation to preserve Bai Hao's name and seek justice for him. (Chapters 580–621)

In the Devil Penitentiary, Bai Xiaochun is first an unwilling prisoner and then an inquisitor whose shakedowns and interrogations give him wealth and notoriety. The Giant Ghost King secretly exploits him, then becomes dependent on him when rebellion strips away the king's cultivation. Bai Xiaochun could surrender his weakened captor, but instead shields him, carries him through repeated attacks, and endures a lethal restrictive spell. That choice changes mutual manipulation into tested loyalty; the king rewards him as majordomo, and Bai Xiaochun achieves Heaven-Dao Nascent Soul with the deva soul he had risked so much to secure. Giant Ghost City and Arch-Emperor City

Empowered by the restored Giant Ghost King, Bai Xiaochun settles scores with the rebels but must also negotiate the king's alternating affection, embarrassment, and political demands. During this period Bai Hao's ghost finally appears. Bai Xiaochun accepts him as an apprentice, promises the protection denied to him in life, and begins learning higher flame formulas through their collaboration. The relationship reverses Bai Xiaochun's earlier position as a dependent disciple: he is now responsible for a vulnerable student's safety, education, identity, and hopes, even while continuing to wear that student's face in public. In Arch-Emperor City, Bai Xiaochun and Bai Hao initially survive by opening a spirit-enhancement shop. Commercial warfare and aristocratic attacks push Bai Xiaochun into public contests where his flame skill earns the title Grandmaster Bai. When the Grand Heavenmaster makes him inspections commissioner, Bai Xiaochun uses the office aggressively against entrenched clans and corrupt nobles, carrying out seizures and the Proclamation of Universal Grace. The work gives him enormous authority but also isolates him; protection from the Grand Heavenmaster and Giant Ghost King becomes essential as every prosecution creates powerful enemies. Master and apprentice are reunited after conspirators seize Bai Hao, and Bai Xiaochun responds by forcing his way through the city rather than sacrificing him to political convenience. Bai Hao helps him conjure higher-colored flame and remains his closest collaborator as the Grand Heavenmaster prepares Bai Xiaochun to leave. The Necromancer Kettle expedition then places him amid competing experts and the terrifying Gongsun Wan'er. By the end of the struggle, Bai Xiaochun's Nascent Soul cultivation has advanced and his Wildlands identity is increasingly difficult to maintain, while protecting companions matters more to him than preserving the convenience of the disguise. The loss of the Heavenspan Realm

When the Gravekeeper names Bai Xiaochun the Hell-Emperor's successor, Bai Xiaochun removes the mask and publicly resumes his own identity. He says farewell to the Wildlands roles that protected and empowered him, returns through the bone galleon, and finds the River-Defying Sect in peril. Fighting for home now means confronting devas rather than fleeing them. He saves the sect, reunites with old companions, advances his Undying Codex through bones and blood, and enters the Deva Realm, turning the junior patriarch's symbolic responsibility into the strength to deter institutions that once treated his people as expendable. (Chapters 847–913)

The Gravekeeper's trial draws Bai Xiaochun back into conflict with Du Lingfei, the Celestial's hidden daughter, and with experts competing for advancement. He enters partly to gain the power needed to protect his communities, but the trial exposes divided loyalties, deceptions, and Gongsun Wan'er's possession of Hou Xiaomei. Bai Xiaochun swears to restore Hou Xiaomei, survives the Deadmire, and emerges into an escalating war. His demigod fleshly body and heaven-defying regeneration let him contest enemies beyond ordinary devas, yet power does not give him control over the Celestial's plans or the collapsing world's fate. The final struggle for the Heavenspan Realm turns his fear of loss into catastrophe. Bai Hao sacrifices himself while helping conjure twenty-two-colored flame, saving his master but leaving Bai Xiaochun with a debt grief cannot repay. Bai Xiaochun resurrects the Blood Ancestor and fights Daoist Heavenspan, but the supposed worldgate proves false and the realm is destroyed as its survivors are cast into the void. Reaching the Eternal Immortal Domains therefore feels less like ascension than displacement: Bai Xiaochun arrives with surviving loved ones and enemies, carrying responsibility for a scattered people and the conviction that greater power must prevent another home from being erased. Eternal Immortal Domains

Bai Xiaochun begins in the Eternal Immortal Domains by rescuing and then reconciling with Ghostmother, whose true identity links her to the Gongsun Wan'er he once knew. He reconstructs his damaged Dao heart, enters Saint-Emperor City, and again turns insecurity into both mischief and political leverage, most visibly through disputes involving the imperial lotus and heavenly dragonfish. Celestial tribulation then forces him to forge a personal Dao; with the Live Forever and Undying codices integrated, he becomes a celestial and begins the Time Immemorial Codex rather than remaining dependent on inherited paths. The damaged Sovereign Fan gives Bai Xiaochun a second arena of advancement. He completes increasingly dangerous trials, gains sovereign energy, becomes the fan's guardian, and negotiates with its spirit automaton, Bai Xiaochi, rather than merely possessing it. At the same time he reunites with the Grand Heavenmaster and Heavenspan survivors, accepts responsibility as Lord of the North, and intervenes when rival dynasties threaten them. Conflicts with Daoist Heavenspan remain personal and political: Bai Xiaochun opposes the man's ruthless methods while recognizing the strength and history that make him more than a disposable enemy. After learning of schemes against his family and allies, Bai Xiaochun abandons restraint in Vile-Emperor territory. He rescues companions, executes the Vile-Prince, defends the fan against the Vile-Emperor, and advances through the late Celestial Realm until the sovereign treasure gives him power sufficient to challenge archaeans. He claims an immortal domain and brings his scattered people together there. The births of his children and his reconciliation with old friends make his original wish concrete: longevity is no longer only his own continued breathing, but time shared with descendants, partners, teachers, and companions. (Chapters 1168–1225)

Travel through the void then confronts Bai Xiaochun with civilizations that could not preserve themselves. The Time Hourglass, paper world, Immortal Imperatrix, and ruins of the Immortal World reveal the scale of the Mortal Renegade's destruction. Bai Xiaochun studies gravity, sovereign legacies, and the last qi flow of the Immortal World, while seeing that even archaeans and sovereigns can die with their worlds. These revelations strip away any belief that realm alone guarantees permanence and prepare him to inherit power whose purpose must be measured against extinction. (Chapters 1226–1237)

The Mortal Renegade

Absorbing the Immortal World's qi flow and the Worldly Daoist's memories raises Bai Xiaochun to the Archaean Realm but also shows him the historical chain leading to the Mortal Renegade. He uses the Sovereign Fan's Dao Essence of Life and Death to resurrect Bai Hao and later Song Que, acts from gratitude toward those who saved his family, and pushes into the sealing strips on the sleeping giant despite overwhelming danger. His efforts advance him to sovereign, yet the point of that strength is immediate: repair the failing seal and return alive to the family whose safety depends on it. (Chapters 1238–1269)

At home, Bai Xiaochun briefly regains ordinary happiness before evidence that the Mortal Renegade is awakening forces him back into responsibility. He seeks the Eternal Mother, follows the Eternal River, and confronts both Daoist Heavenspan's lasting ambitions and the history of the enemy's disciple. Bai Xiaochun's Dao becomes associated with rekindling life rather than accepting universal darkness. He scatters portions of life force and divine sense like seeds through ruined worlds, restoring possibility where the Mortal Renegade's path produced only silence, even though doing so leaves him depleted for the coming fight. When the Mortal Renegade awakens, Bai Xiaochun cannot defeat him by force alone. He combines the Sutras of the Former, Present, and Future with Dao clones, the Time Hourglass, medicinal pills, the Eternal Mother, and the full manifestation of his life essence spirit. Time shifts exhaust him, failed negotiations show that the enemy will not relinquish the Eternal Flower, and repeated blows shatter his body. Yet the man who once fled any hint of death now continues without fearing it, because retreat would condemn every person and world whose survival has become the meaning of his own eternity. (Chapters 1293–1303)

Supported by the Essence of the Eternal, Bai Xiaochun spends life force to unleash the Finger of Allheaven and destroys the Mortal Renegade, but the victory leaves him alone after the Eternal Immortal Domains vanish from time and space. His new obsession is not conquest: he waits through ages, guides the return of life across the starry sky, studies the Essences born from living wills, and ultimately retrieves the people he lost. The supplied epilogue shows him later leaving the restored Eternal Immortal Domains with family and friends, his story passing into legend while his journey continues beyond that world's boundaries. Appearance and personality

Bai Xiaochun first appears as a thin, seemingly weak youth with a healthy fair complexion, an innocent, quick-witted expression, and an ordinary green robe worn nearly threadbare. Cultivation greatly strengthens his body and preserves a youthful appearance; late in the final battle, spending life force turns most of his hair gray and dulls his skin. The narrative treats those changes as consequences of exertion rather than evidence of ordinary aging. (Chapters 1 and 1305)

He is openly afraid of pain and death, careful to prepare escape routes, and delighted by status, praise, wealth, and chances to appear senior. Those traits repeatedly create comic trouble, but they do not make him faithless. When companions or a home are genuinely endangered, fear sharpens into anger and persistence; he risks himself for sect brothers, soldiers, disciples, partners, children, and entire worlds. His medicine and pranks often overlook collateral inconvenience, while remorse is clearest when his actions cause suffering he did not intend. (Chapters 1–1315)

Abilities and cultivation

Bai Xiaochun's cultivation develops through two complementary inheritances, extensive medicine and spirit-enhancement practice, Wildlands necromancy, and finally a personal Dao centered on life, death, and time. His most consequential powers often combine rather than operate in isolation. The corpus demonstrates their results and stages in detail, but does not always explain the underlying nature of the mysterious energy he later identifies as the Essence of the Eternal.

Cultivation path and personal Dao

He progresses from Qi Condensation through Heaven-Dao Foundation Establishment, Heaven-Dao Gold Core, Heaven-Dao Nascent Soul, deva, demigod, celestial, archaean, and sovereign. The Heaven-Dao stages depend on rare Heavenstring energy and deva-soul foundations rather than ordinary mortal-grade breakthroughs. At the Celestial Realm he must forge a Daoseed and a personal Dao, integrating inherited methods into a path that can support the Time Immemorial Codex. By the epilogue his cultivation is described as unfathomable, beyond the old boatman's expectations, but the corpus does not assign that latest state a simple conventional realm label. Undying Live Forever Technique

The Undying Live Forever Technique originates in the Spirit Stream Sect as two complementary codices. The Undying Codex strengthens the fleshly body through successive transformations including Iron Skin, Gold Skin, the Heavenly King stage, tendons, bones, and blood. Its training is painful and resource-intensive, and major advances commonly occur under life-threatening pressure. It grants extreme strength, durability, recovery, and longevity, but it does not make Bai Xiaochun impossible to injure; stronger enemies break his bones, drain his blood, and force him to expend life force despite its protection. The Live Forever Codex develops the spiritual side of the inheritance. Its aura can merge with the Undying Codex, and their integration becomes essential when Bai Xiaochun reconstructs his Dao heart and forges his celestial Daoseed. The resulting foundation supports large-scale regeneration and his later life-centered Dao, but the text distinguishes cultivation-derived endurance from temporary item or external support. Even near the end, sovereign attacks can overwhelm his body; survival depends on judgment, allies, the Eternal Mother, and the Essence of the Eternal as well as innate cultivation. Purple Qi arts and the Waterswamp Kingdom

Purple Qi Cauldron Control is Bai Xiaochun's early Spirit Stream foundation, progressing through control of weight, speed, and summoned power. Its signature extension, the Waterswamp Kingdom, creates a vast swamp and calls a life essence spirit whose form depends on the cultivator. At first Bai Xiaochun cannot manifest the whole creature because his cultivation and the available space are insufficient. Later revelations show its crocodilian, turtle-like nature at colossal scale; its bite can affect even the Mortal Renegade, but its emergence is not perfectly predictable and its voracious temperament can surprise Bai Xiaochun himself. Related Spirit Stream methods include the Human Controlling Grand Magic, the Will-Spirit Grand Magic, and the Living Mountain Incantation. Bai Xiaochun uses them for control, pressure, physical transformation, and trial-specific combat rather than as interchangeable attacks. The Heavenspan Dharma Eye, acquired from a hidden legacy, provides potent perception and suppressive force, while the protomagnetic power of the Protomagnetic Wings enhances movement. Their exact late-story relevance varies, and the corpus does not treat every early method as independently decisive after his realm vastly surpasses its original scale. Medicine and pill concocting

Bai Xiaochun studies plants systematically, excels in the 10,000 Medicines Pavilion tests, and develops medicine through repeated experiments rather than effortless intuition. His concocting can produce healing, cultivation, fasting, sensory, attraction, illusion, and soul-affecting effects. It is also hazardous: unstable furnaces, lightning, mass animal incidents, and poorly understood side effects repeatedly endanger bystanders. He improves by testing formulas, observing failures, and adapting medicine to tactical problems, eventually using pills at army and sovereign scale, but the narrative never removes the risk that a new formula behaves differently from his intention. The Fantasy Pill, Aphrodisiac Pill, and Soul Convergence Pill demonstrate different applications of that craft: constructed experience or illusion, involuntary attraction, and convergence or control of souls. Bai Xiaochun uses such products commercially, experimentally, and in battle. Their effects are pill-derived rather than innate mental powers, and targets or circumstances can make their consequences difficult to contain. His later Soulhoarding Pagoda supports soul-related work, but it remains equipment rather than a substitute for his learned medicine and necromancy. Spirit enhancement, necromancy, and flame conjuring

The Turtle-Wok lets Bai Xiaochun perform spirit enhancements by consuming appropriate colored flame and applying successive upgrades to an object. Early experimentation teaches him that enhancements change weight, hardness, potency, and other properties, while excessive or exposed enhancement can attract greed and danger. His Golden Crow Sword, Greatsword of the North, Eternal Parasol, and other equipment benefit from this expertise. These are item-derived combat advantages, not permanent changes to his body, and their effectiveness still depends on the item's quality and the number of enhancements it can bear. In the Wildlands he discovers that necromantic flame conjuring and spirit enhancement use related principles. Guided first by experimentation and later by Bai Hao's formulas, he advances from low-colored flames to the status of terrestrial necromancer and ultimately conjures flames with more than twenty colors. Higher stages require increasing numbers of souls, precise formulas, and control; failure can produce explosive or catastrophic results. Twenty-two-colored flame saves him only through Bai Hao's sacrifice, whereas later thirty-colored flame reflects sovereign-level development rather than an ability he possessed permanently at earlier stages. Time Immemorial Codex

After forging his personal Dao, Bai Xiaochun develops the Time Immemorial Codex through the Sutra of the Former, Sutra of Present Life and Death, and Sutra of Future Paramita. The sutras let him call on past, present, and future states, create or coordinate Dao clones, and bend the timing or recurrence of attacks. He uses these effects defensively and offensively against the Mortal Renegade, but manipulating time consumes enormous cultivation and exhausts him physically and mentally. The Time Hourglass provides additional time-related leverage; it is a precious treasure interacting with his Dao, not proof that every temporal effect originates within him. Essence of the Eternal and final mastery

Near the final battle, Bai Xiaochun repeatedly senses a mysterious energy that can oppose otherwise overwhelming attacks. He eventually understands and articulates it as the Essence of the Eternal, an essence outside time that also creates and contains time. It supports his ascent after near defeat and resonates with life force expended through the Finger of Allheaven. The source establishes its response to Bai Xiaochun and his eventual command of it, but its earliest appearances are unexplained even to him, so they should not be treated as conscious mastery retroactively. After the Eternal Immortal Domains vanish, Bai Xiaochun spreads awareness through the starry sky, guides the development of life, and seeks enlightenment from Essences produced alongside living beings. His projections can appear across worlds, and his will can shape immense cosmic structures. These demonstrations exceed his earlier sovereign combat in scope, yet his central application is restorative rather than destructive: he uses ages of cultivation and observation to retrieve the lost Eternal Immortal Domains and reunite with its people.
