Rivalry, danger, and trust in the Spirit Stream Sect

Du Lingfei begins as one of Fragrant Cloud Peak's most famous Outer Sect disciples, already at the great circle of the fifth level of Qi Condensation and confident that she can win first place in the peak competition. Proud of her cultivation and plant knowledge, she dismisses the seemingly timid Bai Xiaochun and treats him as an unworthy rival. His layered defenses exhaust her, while his correct identification of a medicinal seed and superior analysis of a grafted plant overturn her assumptions. Her resentment remains real, but the contests force her to recognize that his odd behavior conceals genuine competence. (Chapters 30–35)

Her apothecary ambitions are independent of that rivalry. She succeeds with the required batches of Inkspirit Incense and earns promotion to journeyman apothecary, yet Bai Xiaochun's unprecedented run of successful concoctions again places her achievement in his shadow. This competitive period establishes both her discipline and a recurring limit: she can apply demanding techniques effectively, but they drain her spiritual energy, and her desire to prove herself can make her too quick to judge. Even so, astonishment gradually replaces simple contempt as his results become impossible to dismiss as luck. (Chapters 30–45)

The Luochen Clan mission transforms their relationship because its danger makes character more important than reputation. Du Lingfei initially shares the group's frustration with Bai Xiaochun's caution, but Feng Yan's death and the clan's betrayal prove his warnings correct. She helps rescue the weakened Hou Yunfei, fights with her flying sword and mist-beast banner, and continues trying to warn the sect despite severe injuries to her qi passageways. When escape seems impossible, she urges Bai Xiaochun to survive rather than demand that he remain and die with them; his decision to draw away their pursuers gives her and Hou Yunfei a chance to live. Believing Bai Xiaochun dead, Du Lingfei grieves openly and helps ensure that his courage is understood rather than reduced to his former cowardly reputation. His survival leaves them bound by a shared ordeal, and their former hostility becomes affection expressed through teasing, care, and his nickname for her, “boo.” Her service earns an apprenticeship and an appointment as the Spirit Stream Sect's emissary in Eastwood City, where she keeps the local cultivator clans in check. The commission develops her from a competitive disciple into a responsible representative, but at its end she disappears without a trace, leaving the sect unable to find her and Bai Xiaochun without an explanation. Hidden mission and the borrowed Xuemei appearance

Du Lingfei's disappearance is later revealed to be part of a concealed mission for her father, Daoist Heavenspan, rather than an abandonment of her early life. She had entered the Spirit Stream Sect to investigate the surviving legacy of the Frigid School and determine whether her father's former top apprentice, the Frigid Matriarch, had truly died. The later weakening of the formation around the matriarch's soulclone follows Du Lingfei's departure, but the corpus does not specify every action Du Lingfei took or how much she learned there. Her ordinary Outer Sect identity therefore functioned as cover, while the friendships she formed under it became personally real. (Chapters 173, 897, and 973–974)

Her second investigative path leads to the Blood Stream Sect because the Blood Ancestor had been the Frigid Matriarch's Daoist partner. During the Blood Ancestor's blood-master trial, the masked combatant who appears to be Xuemei is suddenly revealed with Du Lingfei's face, and Bai Xiaochun recognizes her. Later, however, the injured Xuemei appears with her own face, bears wounds carried from the earlier stage of the trial, and is confirmed by Patriarch Limitless as his daughter. The evidence establishes a temporary replacement or assumed appearance inside the trial, not that Du Lingfei and Xuemei are one person; the exact method by which Du Lingfei took her place or face is never explained. The encounter replaces Bai Xiaochun's certainty with years of questions. Du Lingfei does not provide him an immediate explanation, and intermediaries can offer only clues associated with the Starry Sky Dao Polarity Sect. From a hidden position as Heavenspan Emissary, she quietly orders Hallmaster Feng Youde to protect Bai Xiaochun and promises to help his advancement, demonstrating that separation has not ended her concern for him. A later retrospective also records that she gifts Bai Xiaochun a deva soul, but the transfer itself and her motive are not shown. Her influence protects and materially assists him even while her identity remains inaccessible to him. (Chapters 354–410 and 669)

Heavenspan Emissary and conflict with her father

When Du Lingfei openly returns, she is the Heavenspan Emissary, a representative whose missions give her standing comparable to a demigod even though the corpus does not state a matching cultivation realm. She supervises the Deadmire trial with Heavenspan Island's special guards and warns Bai Xiaochun of danger involving Hou Xiaomei. She also finally identifies Daoist Heavenspan as her father. Her rank explains her access and earlier protection of Bai Xiaochun, yet her exhausted, forlorn demeanor shows that exceptional status has not brought freedom or contentment. The trial exposes the constraints beneath that authority. Du Lingfei travels beside a young man who is actually her father in disguise, and the Celestial conceals her in his bag of holding when his plan produces a battle with Ghostmother. After Ghostmother departs, he abandons Du Lingfei with the other survivors to chase a separated ghost face. She responds to Bai Xiaochun's grief by taking his hand and offering hope that he will see his missing friends again. Her ability to comfort him while injured and discarded herself preserves the compassion she developed in the Luochen Mountains rather than the aloofness expected from the ruler's daughter. In the north, Du Lingfei uses her institutional standing to restrain cultivators hostile to Bai Xiaochun, while Daoist Heavenspan appoints him her special guard. Their travel together restores the familiarity of their early bond, and she explains that her investigations of the Frigid School and Blood Ancestor came from her father's orders. She also admits that the Spirit Stream experience changed her loyalty: she once told her father everything, but now withholds some observations and secrets. This is an important development from obedient agent to a woman preserving an independent moral and emotional life, even when she cannot openly break from the world's ruler. (Chapters 954–974)

That conflict becomes explicit when the laughing-crying ghost face attacks them. Du Lingfei fights beside Bai Xiaochun with a golden flame phoenix, repeatedly teleports them away, and maintains a golden defense despite wounds that expose her crystal bones. She predicts her father is coming, but trembles in pain because she recognizes his methods. Daoist Heavenspan has concealed himself in her golden light and deliberately used both of them as bait. Du Lingfei's bitter question—whether escape is worth sacrificing family—shows that she now rejects his central obsession, while her confession that she wants peace, family, and friends aligns her values with Bai Xiaochun's. Slave seal, failed fusion, and restoration

After returning to Heavenspan Island, Du Lingfei gradually loses control of herself to a magical slave seal placed by her father. Daoist Heavenspan has cultivated her as the second person to master the Live Forever Codex so that she can be fused with an Undying Codex cultivator and refined into a pill. His earlier alternatives fail, and he chooses escape and longevity over his only child. Du Lingfei remains conscious inside the vacant, puppet-like body; when the Celestial captures Bai Xiaochun and begins the formation, she can only apologize as the seal forces her to act as the “pill furnace” consuming his life force. Her decisive action in this crisis is resistance rather than combat victory. She pulls her hand away from Bai Xiaochun, fights through mind-shattering force, and begs the father she remembers to stop. Even after he intensifies the seals, she refuses to betray her beliefs, tearing her flesh and risking the collapse of her body and divine sense. Daoist Heavenspan must physically force their heads together because her will prevents willing compliance. This refusal completes the independence that began when she stopped reporting everything to him: stripped of rank, movement, and bodily control, she still chooses Bai Xiaochun's life and her own principles over her father's command. Bai Hao's twenty-two-colored flame interrupts the fusion and throws the unconscious Du Lingfei away from Bai Xiaochun. The process nevertheless reaches far enough to leave a scrap of her Live Forever aura within him, which the Gravekeeper later cultivates as part of his own plan. Du Lingfei then disappears during the destruction of the Heavenspan Realm. Daoist Heavenspan insists that she is not dead, but neither he nor Bai Xiaochun can find her in the Eternal Immortal Domains, and the source does not explain where she is held or what condition she experiences during that absence. Years later, the memory of her plea returns to Daoist Heavenspan as his own end approaches, forcing him to confront the human cost of his obsession. Du Lingfei is ultimately among those sealed within the River of Time and Space when the Eternal Immortal Domains vanish. Bai Xiaochun hears her voice there, recognizes that she is alive, and eventually restores the lost people and their world. Her final demonstrated state is healthy and present among the people greeting him in the restored peace. The corpus confirms reunion but does not narrate her missing years, later cultivation progress, or a formal marriage. (Chapters 1290 and 1306–1314)

Appearance and personality

Du Lingfei is introduced as a spectacularly beautiful young woman with snow-white skin and willow-curved eyebrows. As an Outer Sect disciple she wears loose Daoist clothing; when she later visits Bai Xiaochun on Heavenspan Island, she chooses a simple white gown that deliberately recalls her Spirit Stream appearance rather than the more ostentatious dress of her official role. Her bones eventually become crystalline through her cultivation, a hidden physical transformation revealed only when an injury exposes them. During the Blood Ancestor trial, her face appears beneath Xuemei's mask, but that temporary presentation should not be treated as Xuemei's true appearance. (Chapters 30, 257, 922, and 975)

She is proud, ambitious, and initially quick to judge, but she is also disciplined enough to earn apothecary rank and responsible enough to administer Eastwood City effectively. Danger brings out loyalty and endurance: she fights while injured, accepts death rather than abandon companions, and grieves without concern for appearances. With Bai Xiaochun she moves from rivalry to tenderness, retaining a teasing reserve while repeatedly protecting him. Her later secrecy is not simple duplicity; it reflects divided obligations between an authoritarian father and the friends and beliefs she chooses for herself. Abilities and cultivation

Du Lingfei develops from a fifth-level Qi Condensation disciple with sect techniques and apothecary training into the rare successful cultivator of the Live Forever Codex. Her official authority can exceed what her demonstrated cultivation alone would command, so her rank as Heavenspan Emissary and the protections associated with her father must be distinguished from personal power. The corpus never gives a final named cultivation realm for her, and her post-restoration abilities are not shown.

Qi Condensation techniques and apothecary training

At the great circle of the fifth level of Qi Condensation, Du Lingfei uses a banner that becomes concealing or defensive mist and can form two mist beasts. She also controls a flying sword and applies Lightness-in-Heaviness to accelerate it beyond ordinary disciples' control. These techniques let her restrain competition opponents, sever puppet limbs, and defend herself during the Luochen betrayal. Their limitation is spiritual expenditure: repeated tournament battles and Lightness-in-Heaviness leave her depleted, while damaged qi passageways during the mission severely reduce her recovery and combat endurance. Her plant knowledge and medicine concocting are practical sect disciplines rather than innate powers. She can identify medicinal plants, catalyze spirit flowers, and successfully concoct the three required batches of Inkspirit Incense to become a journeyman apothecary. Bai Xiaochun exposes limits in both identification and refinement, but her promotion confirms substantial competence. The corpus does not show her progressing to a higher apothecary rank or using medicine as a major later specialization, so that early qualification is her latest explicit professional level. Live Forever Codex and Celestial Bones

Daoist Heavenspan steals the Live Forever Codex from the Arch-Emperor Dynasty and supports Du Lingfei's cultivation of it. She becomes only the second person in his long experiments to master the codex, after the Frigid Matriarch. Its yin-aligned life-force power complements the yang-aligned Undying Codex, and successful cultivation turns Du Lingfei's bones crystalline. The source says her advancement is rapid with her father's backing but does not describe how she was selected, the stages she passed through, or the daily cultivation method, so those mechanics remain unknown. The codex produces power directly opposed to the Undying Codex: Daoist Heavenspan can draw crystalline force through slave symbols in Du Lingfei and use it to suppress Bai Xiaochun's regeneration. In the fusion formation, her body functions as the living furnace that draws in his flesh, blood, cultivation, and soul before both cultivators would be sacrificed into an Undying Live Forever Pill. This is an imposed application rather than a technique she willingly controls. The interrupted process leaves only a scrap of her aura in Bai Xiaochun, while Du Lingfei herself vanishes; the corpus confirms her later survival but never demonstrates whether the interruption damaged or altered her mastery. Golden light, phoenix, and movement

Du Lingfei can activate golden light through incantation gestures and a touch to her forehead. It envelops chosen people, teleports her first hundreds and then thousands of meters, and can be used repeatedly in flight. The same golden power forms a defensive sphere that withstands attacks from swarms of ghosts and, when it collapses, becomes a lightning strike through the enclosing black smoke. Repeated teleportation while wounded worsens her condition, and even her otherwise exceptional speed and defense cannot escape the laughing-crying ghost face, whose power is comparable to her father's. In direct battle, she shapes the golden light into a phoenix wreathed in golden flames. The construct strikes alongside Bai Xiaochun's strongest attacks and contributes to the pair being nearly invincible below the Demigod Realm, but the ghost face destroys it with a single clawed-hand attack and transfers three severe wounds to Du Lingfei. The corpus does not name the phoenix technique, explain whether its fire comes from the Live Forever Codex or another inheritance, or show a later refinement. Its demonstrated function is therefore a powerful but counterable offensive manifestation, not proof of unrestricted fire control. (Chapter 974)

Some applications of the golden light are entangled with Daoist Heavenspan's authority. He can hide within it, emerge at the moment he chooses, and use Du Lingfei and Bai Xiaochun as bait without her willing consent. Earlier, Du Lingfei also fades by using the power of Heavenspan Island. These scenes establish access to movement and protection tied to her identity and surroundings, but they do not show whether she could reproduce every effect away from her father or the island. Her latest independent combat use remains the northern pursuit before the slave seal takes control. (Chapters 923 and 974–976)

Authority, investigation, and will

As Heavenspan Emissary, Du Lingfei can command special guards, supervise trials, summon or direct sect officials, and invoke her father's decrees and her own status among his disciples. She protects Bai Xiaochun indirectly by ordering Feng Youde to watch over him and directly by challenging northern devas through their demigod patriarch. This influence is institutional rather than a cultivation technique: it depends on recognition of Heavenspan Island and Daoist Heavenspan, and her father can override her interests whenever his plans demand it. (Chapters 410, 918–956)

Her investigative ability is demonstrated through long undercover assignments in the Spirit Stream and Blood Stream sects, selective reporting, and years of inquiry into the Frigid Matriarch's survival. The precise disguise or substitution mechanism used during the Xuemei incident remains unexplained, so it should not be generalized into a transformation power. Her strongest non-magical capability is her will: she remains conscious under a slave seal, briefly moves against it, and continues resisting even when doing so tears her body and threatens her divine sense. She cannot break the seal completely, but she forces Daoist Heavenspan to intervene personally, making her resistance consequential despite physical defeat. • Bai Xiaochun: An early rival who becomes her trusted companion and love interest after the Luochen mission. She protects him from afar, shares secrets and values with him, and nearly destroys herself resisting her father's order to consume him; he later searches for and restores her.
• Daoist Heavenspan: Her father, patron, ruler, and eventual captor. His backing gives her exceptional cultivation and authority, but his obsession with leaving the world leads him to use her as bait, enslave her, and attempt to refine his only child into a pill.
