Kong Tingyun
Kong Tingyun is a cultivator of Profound Peak Gate whose friendship with Li Yuanjiao grows into a lasting connection with the Moongaze Li Family. An accomplished negotiator and artifact wielder, she supports several generations of the household before attaining Purple Mansion. Her breakthrough brings the opportunity to recover her ruined sect, but also makes her ancestral lineage a means for northern powers to control her future. (Chapters 450–455, 627, 1514–1518, and 1707)
Biography
A Bargain at Lake Xian
Tingyun first approaches Yuanjiao while serving Yunyue Peak, where she is the only Foundation Establishment cultivator. She wants the poisonous tail hooks of a Hooked Serpent in Lake Xian, but keeps a second objective—the Nascent Origin True Water beneath it—concealed. Her choice of an outsider reflects the politics within Profound Peak: seeking help from another peak could compromise the neutrality she has carefully maintained. Yuanjiao agrees to cooperate, and her formation, golden mountain and pearl help him subdue the creature. When the serpent exposes her hidden purpose, their cooperation becomes a tense negotiation. Yuanjiao takes control of the formation plate as security; Tingyun admits the deception and promises to arrange a fire vein for his family in return for the treasures. (Chapters 450–455)
The bargain creates respect between two people who recognize each other’s caution. Tingyun calls Yuanjiao exceptionally cunning, but also asks whether his family has another suitable unmarried Foundation cultivator. Her question reveals the loneliness of years spent cultivating and the difficulty of trusting a Dao companion; it does not develop into a partnership with Yuanjiao. She later fulfills her practical promise, directing Kong Gusun to open the fire vein on Mount Wutu and reclaiming her Emerald Jade Plate. Discovering that the captured serpent has become the human-shaped Li Wushao unsettles her, but she observes the courtesy appropriate to a fellow cultivator. (Chapters 455 and 481–482)
Alliance against the Golden Tang Gate
Overseas, Tingyun faces Situ Mo, whose deceitful conduct threatens Profound Peak’s interests. She welcomes Yuanjiao, Li Qinghong and Kongheng, bringing the Li alliance into this struggle. Her easy conversation and explanations of sea travel accompany a calculated operation: Yuanjiao conceals himself beside her, while the remaining companions provide support. When Situ Mo and the monk Mutuo attack, she meets them without panic. Her golden mountain pins Mutuo and removes his ability to speak, while the serpent hooks pressure Situ Mo and Yuanjiao’s hidden sword attack forces him into retreat. (Chapters 523 and 525–528)
Tingyun reinforces the mountain with a golden talisman, but remains cautious about claiming to have killed a Buddhist cultivator. The battle nevertheless suppresses her rivals and strengthens her relationship with the Lis. Yuanjiao also reassesses their first encounter: her displayed power against Mutuo is far greater than the help she seemed to need against Wushao. He concludes that Changxi, her ancestor and patron, may have deliberately used their earlier cooperation and the extended formation loan to offer goodwill. Tingyun’s warmth thus works alongside both personal calculation and her family’s wider diplomacy. (Chapters 528–529)
Friendship across the Li Generations
In the Green Pine Grotto Heaven, Tingyun is glad to find Yuanjiao amid dangers she cannot safely handle alone. She warns him about the powerful Tu Longjian and chooses observation over an imprudent contest for Supreme Yin Moonlight. His later death does not end her bond with the family. At his memorial she pays her respects without forcing the mourners into a discussion of the past, and privately postpones Changxi’s request for a meeting with Li Xuanfeng, judging the timing insensitive. Her alliance has become personal enough for her to temper an ancestor’s instructions with concern for bereavement. (Chapters 595–597 and 627)
She continues that relationship through Qinghong and Yuanjiao’s son Li Xizhi. When Xizhi needs help, she invokes her connection with his father and provides an opportunity to gather Dawn Colored Qi for Changxi. At the Beihuan gathering she also shares observations about the Li Family’s possible northern ancestry with Xuanfeng. These exchanges preserve a useful channel between the households, while showing that her regard for the Lis extends beyond the man who first negotiated with her. (Chapters 701, 706, and 715–716)
Ruins, Leadership and Bright Yang Counsel
Benefits from Dongning Palace accompany Tingyun’s advancement to late Foundation Establishment and a more dignified bearing. She shares intelligence about the dangers facing the Li Family and identifies a Radiant Sky Stone held by Yu Fuzi. Her own grudge against its holder influences the possibilities she raises, but she acknowledges the difficulty of acting against his powerful lineage. During the Great Ning Palace crisis, she warns Qinghong that Azure Pond’s weakened defenses invite attack and supplies the timing of the palace’s return, allowing her friend to hurry home. By the time Moongaze is unified, Tingyun has gained the leadership of Profound Peak through Changxi’s favor. The office is a hard-won political achievement rather than a new cultivation realm. (Chapters 789, 859–860, and 908–909)
Her concern for the Lis also produces a consequential mistake. She gives Qinghong Bright Yang teaching materials, including Heavenly Radiance, Hidden Light, but urges that the Radiant Sky Stone be reserved for Li Zhouwei rather than Li Ximing. She judges the family’s secret techniques and breakthrough prospects too cautiously to recognize Ximing’s eventual success. Their friendship remains comfortable during an overseas journey: she arranges an opportunity to see Xizhi and prevents her attendants from killing cultivators whose stray spells accidentally strike their boat. Much later, however, Ximing’s attainment makes her fear that her well-intentioned warning has been understood as an obstruction. (Chapters 946–947, 951–955, and 1518)
A Hidden Breakthrough and a Claimed Ancestry
Tingyun’s Purple Mansion breakthrough depends on arrangements made before Changxi’s death. Deep within the earth veins of Xuanmiao Temple, the borrowed Wind-Listening White Stone Mountain keeps those veins stable, while Changxi converts his remaining cultivation into spiritual energy to aid her. The Treasure Earth spirit item she consumes resonates with Sumian’s Concealed Containment Palace, further protecting her seclusion. These precautions preserve her chance at divine ability while Profound Peak loses its protector and is divided among other interests. She emerges stronger, but finds no intact gate able to defend her independence. (Chapter 1514)
Ch’i Lanyan immediately claims her as a fellow Tongxuan cultivator and compels her to travel north. Before Wei Xuanyin, she presents the history of the Profound Light Peak Moving Great Dao, tracing it to Luo Yuan and Grand Daoist Master Lü Bai. Recognition of the ancestry Changxi had struggled to establish is inseparable from the northerners’ intention to use her. They possess the matching divine inheritance and can restore her gate, leaving refusal a dangerous prospect. When they return south to reclaim her relatives, she finds Kong Guxi, Kong Qiuyan and Kong Xiaxiang profoundly changed by hardship. She thanks Tinglan formally, but privately asks who truly protected her kin. Guxi credits Ximing with shelter when their household collapsed. (Chapters 1515–1518)
Restoration under Northern Protection
Northern intervention recovers Tingyun’s territory, but its violence and demands leave little room for uncomplicated gratitude. She accepts superior pills without knowing how to repay them and later remembers the despair of those defeated in the restoration. While thanking Ch’i Lanyan, she still acknowledges the Sword Gate’s kindness in lending the White Stone Mountain. The return of mountains and family members gives Profound Peak a chance to recover; it also confirms that her success now depends on patrons whose strength greatly exceeds her own. (Chapters 1526 and 1536)
The continuing conflict makes that dependence harsher. She participates in northern operations and recognizes land once belonging to her family in territory now held by the Lis. During the struggle involving Song and Moongaze, she stands among northern allies while her recovering gate suffers renewed devastation. Refusing to fight has never been an available choice. She understands that Song cannot spare a strategically placed Profound Peak, while the Pavilion of Profound Order needs her grievance to justify its influence. Her deepest fear becomes a northern withdrawal that would leave her without protection: even a dangerous path through the conflict seems preferable to losing the only path her family still has. (Chapters 1622 and 1707)
Appearance and personality
Tingyun is petite and refined, with a round face, almond-shaped eyes and, after her breakthrough, delicately arched brows. Her robes vary from pale yellow feathered garments to violet, indigo and richly ornamented Xiang attire. Treasured medicines preserve a youthful appearance; when she welcomes Qinghong after a long separation, she looks no older than her early twenties. Her gate-leader robes bear golden mountain patterns and gold-and-jade fasteners. (Chapters 450, 454, 595, 701, 859, 909, and 1515)
She combines an affectionate, playful manner with careful bargaining and sharp political perception. She can conceal an objective or arrange an ambush, yet her consideration for Yuanjiao’s mourners and her restraint toward accidental offenders show that calculation does not exclude sympathy. The loss of her household changes her confidence into a more strained composure. Her later smiles conceal grief, fear and a clear awareness that stronger powers determine the terms of her restoration. (Chapters 455, 527–529, 627, 952, 1518, and 1536)
Abilities and cultivation
Profound Light Peak Moving Great Dao
Tingyun inherits the Kong Family’s earth-associated transmission, whose claimed Tongxuan ancestry passes through Luo Yuan and Lü Bai. She is already a Foundation Establishment cultivator when she meets Yuanjiao, and later reaches late Foundation after the Dongning Palace expedition. Her Purple Mansion attainment produces Stable Earth divine ability through the method called Fool’s Mountain Chase. This personal advancement should be distinguished from Changxi’s cultivation and from the promised, more complete inheritance held by the Pavilion of Profound Order. (Chapters 450, 789, and 1514–1516)
Her hidden breakthrough demonstrates how spiritual resources and lineage support shape access to power. The White Stone Mountain stabilizes earth veins and shields her seclusion; Changxi supplies spiritual energy of the same lineage, while the Wandering Pass Treasure Earth she consumes resonates with Sumian’s divine ability. The Treasure Earth aid does not make her own Stable Earth attainment identical to his. Her later prospects remain constrained because the northerners control matching divine techniques as well as political protection. (Chapters 1514–1516)
Golden Mountain, Pearl and Serpent Hooks
Tingyun’s Foundation-era combat relies on powerful artifacts suited to defense and suppression. The golden mountain pins Wushao and later restrains Mutuo, interfering with the monk’s speech and slowing his efforts to escape. A golden talisman strengthens the suppression. Her pearl blocks incoming attacks and can be sent in pursuit, while the twin serpent hooks acquired from Wushao circle like black crescent moons with poisonous turquoise smoke. Against Situ Mo, these tools work together with Yuanjiao’s concealed sword attack rather than replacing an ally’s contribution. (Chapters 455, 527–528, and 596)
The effects belong to the artifacts she activates, and the mountain’s material is unknown. Tingyun herself recognizes the difficulty of permanently killing Buddhist enemies even after crushing them. Yuanjiao’s comparison between their first expedition and the later ambush also shows that an observed performance need not reveal everything she can do: he judges that she held back earlier while Changxi cultivated relations with his family. (Chapters 528–529)
Formation Control and Water-Vein Travel
The Emerald Jade Plate enables Tingyun to control a substantial formation through hand seals. She uses it to enclose Wushao, then leaves it with Yuanjiao as security for their bargain. Its durable defensive effect reaches the level of mid-stage Foundation Establishment even in different environments; that rating describes the formation, rather than establishing her own substage. She reclaims it after arranging the Li Family’s fire vein, whose physical work is performed by Kong Gusun under her direction. (Chapters 454–455, 475, and 481–482)
Her familiarity with the Eastern Sea also has practical value. She times the surge of marine water veins and uses the Water Command Technique to ride them toward the Scarlet Pristine Sea, conserving mana and avoiding a much longer flight. This knowledge makes her a useful guide as well as an ally with access to protected marketplaces and sect contacts. (Chapter 526)
