Ch’i Lanyan

Ch’i Lanyan is a northern Daoist Master whose support for Kong Tingyun’s return also serves his contest with the Supreme Yang Dao lineage. Tinglan later says he led forces against her side, but his fate afterward is unknown. (Chapters 1516, 1518, 1724)

Biography

Turning Kong Tingyun’s return into a political opening

Lanyan first appears as a member of the Pavilion Viewing faction, questioning Maha Fachang about the burden of killing karma. Later, he brings Wei Xuanyin the Zhaoyao Mountain Secret Immortal Genealogy and helps establish the legitimacy of Kong Tingyun’s lineage. In private, however, he is candid that her arrival is the most suitable orthodox pretext for undermining the Supreme Yang Dao and disrupting its cohesion; Wei accepts that she can also serve as a counterweight in Jiangbei. Lanyan still guides Kong toward her family and publicly recognizes her as a Tongxuan disciple, making a useful political arrangement coincide with the restoration she seeks. (Chapters 1501, 1515–1516, 1518)

Building a coalition and facing the limits of his authority

Lanyan invites northern cultivators to support Kong, then says he will guard Xuanmiao Temple while the conflict unfolds. Afterward, he argues that his intervention prevented a wider slaughter and arranges to return seized mountains to Kong’s side. His influence has limits: Yang Ruiyi rebukes him as a minor mountain cultivator without the standing of Wei Xuanyin, and Lanyan leaves in anger rather than answering. Wei later stresses that Lanyan is also head of the Ch’i Family and may act from his own principles. Tinglan later says he led forces against her group and that his Clearcliff Brilliant Branch gravely wounded her; Lanyan’s fate afterward is unknown. (Chapters 1526, 1536, 1543, 1707, 1709, 1724)

Appearance and personality

Lanyan commonly presents a courteous, faintly smiling manner, but he is willing to make instrumental use of people and disputes. When accompanying Kong, he watches the downcast Tinglan with cold mockery; when Yang Ruiyi publicly diminishes his authority, his smile fades and he can only grit his teeth before withdrawing. (Chapters 1518, 1707)

Abilities and cultivation

Fate Divine Ability

Lanyan cultivates a Fate Divine Ability. He notices Kong’s unease before she meets her family, but the ability’s precise effect and range are unknown. He holds the title of Daoist Master; his cultivation realm is unknown. (Chapters 1518, 1707)

Tinglan identifies the Clearcliff Brilliant Branch as the spirit treasure Lanyan wielded in battle. She says it only brushed her, yet still left her gravely wounded; how Lanyan acquired or controls it is unknown. (Chapter 1724)
