Cai

Caitlin “Cai” Von Kaizer is the High Priestess of the Rowan Tribe, a therianthrope who usually travels in the form of a talkative boar. Her comic bravado conceals both a disciplined close-range fighter and a leader willing to exhaust her rank, reveal her hidden identity, or place herself between an enemy and the people she loves. She begins as Iris’s closest friend and an ally of Lux, then becomes Lux’s fiancée, wife, and one of the central members of Heaven’s Gate.

Cai’s unusual progression combines ordinary practitioner ranks with monster-form transformations, a Celestial Maiden Physique, and the Rowan priesthood’s spirit arts. Those systems do not always advance together: one of her Gear forms can temporarily produce Initiate-level power before her own Initiate breakthrough, while Celestial Burst can briefly lift her still higher by destroying the cultivation she has already earned. Her development is therefore defined as much by the costs she accepts as by the strength she displays.

Biography

The Lionheart Tournament and the Hidden Domain

Cai enters the Lionheart Tournament publicly as an obnoxiously confident boar, boasting even when an opponent concedes rather than fight someone protected by the Rowan Tribe. Her private purpose is much more serious. A royal decree would force Iris to marry the champion, so Cai intends to win and marry her best friend herself rather than let Iris be bound to someone she does not love. Her final against Lux exposes the strength beneath the disguise: Immovable Mountain checks Orion, Hildisvíni destroys Lux’s golems, and Cai tries to reach her unrevealed Third Gear before their combined finishing attacks leave both contestants unconscious. Once Lux wins and Cai recognizes Iris’s feelings for him, she gives him the wedding rings she had prepared for Iris and recruits him and Keane for the Rowan expedition instead of resenting the result. The Hidden Domain changes Cai from a formidable tournament surprise into a companion whose power has direct consequences for her people. She seeks the Sacred White Lotus so Maximilian can cure her grandmother and the other victims of the Purple Plague, and she accepts Lux as expedition leader despite her usual insistence on having the last word. Against the Monstrous Terror Death Tyrant, Cai finally uses Third Gear: Ysgithyrwyn’s anti-magic body lets her close through lethal eye rays, break the central eye, and create the opening that the surviving expedition can exploit before her ten-minute limit expires. The group conquers the Domain and carries the Lotus home, laying the foundation for a cure eventually distributed beyond the Rowan Tribe. Her willingness to subordinate pride to a shared objective also makes her bond with Lux and Keane durable rather than merely convenient. (Chapters 269–293, 325, 365, 528, 1080)

Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars

As Heaven’s Gate takes shape, Cai becomes one of Lux’s earliest dependable guildmates rather than a ceremonial ally from an influential tribe. She and Keane return home to check whether the White Lotus has produced a cure, then join the next Sacred Dungeon campaign and break through to Initiate alongside the other young fighters. When the dungeon assigns their party to the Ammarian side against former Yelan allies, Cai objects to killing Watson and Sherlock and follows Lux when he changes sides. Her most consequential battlefield work is opportunistic but calculated: she uses a limited poison from Maximilian to paralyze Rankers, kills General Phobus after the group extracts him, and later risks a tusk strike against Second so the same poison can disable him. Her choices show loyalty to people over a quest’s original faction labels, while her willingness to evaluate Lux’s dangerous plan before accepting it distinguishes judgment from empty fearlessness. That loyalty becomes self-sacrifice when General Revon targets Lux with a Ranker-killing spear. Although the spirits warn Cai not to approach, she invokes Fourth Gear, Twrch Trwyth, because Lux’s death would devastate Iris. The Argonaut spirit gives her temporary Ranker strength, but it cannot erase the gulf between her and a C-Ranker: her barrier, tusks, and transformed body break while absorbing the attack, leaving her near death in human form. Lux, Fei Fei, Xander, and the others suspend their own plans to stabilize and protect her, turning Cai’s earlier claim of friendship into a reciprocal obligation. After recovering, she returns to the Rowan Tribe, where Maximilian recognizes Lux’s promise to protect her and her people, while her sister Rose confronts Cai over neglected priestly responsibilities. The episode exposes both sides of her maturation: she will die for her companions, but her wandering also leaves duties that her family must carry in her absence. (Chapters 486–492, 525–530)

The Dragon kingdoms and the Abyss

During the campaign around the Dragon factions and the Gate of Famine, Cai’s place in Heaven’s Gate expands beyond simply following Lux. When Lux is separated from the group, she helps interpret Eiko’s message and accepts Cethus as temporary leader because his political standing can hold the mixed expedition together. After Lux returns, Cai contracts the Winged Serpent Coatl as her mount and battlefield partner. She fights inside the threatened Yelan city, helps its soldiers withdraw, and allows Coatl to deal with stronger aerial threats rather than chasing every enemy herself. Lux assigns her and Xander together against a Deimos-Ranked monster, reflecting both her real combat value and the need to manage risks she once met through bravado alone. In private, she and Lux warn each other against overextension, and their engagement begins to resemble a partnership built around mutual survival rather than a family arrangement. The Abyss forces Cai to act without guild functions, spirits, or stronger protectors. When Satyrs overwhelm the displaced expedition, she uses Celestial Burst even though it will burn away her accumulated rank, orders Astra to carry Iris to safety, and spends the short burst killing weaker captors and freeing allies rather than trying to defeat the Empyrean leader. Queen Rhiannon saves her from the Satyrs but then tries to prove that Lux values Cai only as a source of power. Cai permits the Demigod to possess her, uses her own spirit-possession training and bond with Lux to trap Rhiannon inside her body, and creates a narrow period for negotiation. The ordeal deepens Cai and Lux’s relationship: after rescue, she openly admits her fear of losing him in the coming war and asks for a future child, while accepting his promise that they should first survive and finish their remaining obligations. Abyssal invasion and broken memories

After returning from the Abyss, Cai’s Celestial Maiden Physique accelerates her cultivation through her bond with Lux. She reaches peak C-Rank and is identified shortly afterward as a B-Ranker, then uses that growth to settle an older grievance against Twilight Rain, the organization that once abducted her. She accompanies Lux and Keane willingly, fights through the underground force with Cleo and Maeve guarding the group against opponents far above its level, and helps end the faction’s presence in Gweliven. Her return to the Rowan Ancestral Land then places her strength beside her family role: she reunites with parents kept apart from her by the Purple Plague, introduces Lux to the household, and tends his injuries after her father tests him. These events move Cai from a granddaughter roaming under Maximilian’s protection toward an adult partner connecting her tribe, family, and guild. (Chapters 1031, 1034–1041, 1076–1080)

During the Abyssal invasion, Cai remains with Iris and Aurora as a final defense for the civilians beneath Barbatos Academy. The divine intervention that saves both worlds from Daniel then erases Lux from her conscious memory. Attempts to force remembrance cause crippling headaches and unconsciousness, but her emotions survive the removal: she is drawn to Lux, resents seeing Aurora kiss him, and proposes that she and Iris both accept him as their fiancé even while believing they have only just met. Lux stops trying to restore the past by force and instead begins creating new memories that can serve as anchors. Cai’s response demonstrates that the relationship is not sustained only by remembered promises or family pressure; stripped of their shared history, she still chooses the same people and the same future. Open Heaven’s Gate

Cai’s sealed memories are eventually freed, after which she joins Iris, Aina, and Aurora on the Floating Island of Edea for the final campaign. The war makes her watch friends fall despite Heaven’s Gate’s preparations: Keane sacrifices himself to block Daniel’s attack, and Cai can only grieve from within the headquarters as the people who shaped her journeys die around Lux. At the battle’s conclusion, the Pillars of Eternity restore Keane and the other fallen allies to life rather than undeath. Cai’s long arc of protecting companions at ruinous personal cost thus ends with the guild surviving together, while Lux rejects godhood in favor of returning to the family waiting for him. In the aftermath, Cai is initially wary of Queen Rhiannon but softens when she meets Lux’s infant daughter, Dia, and immediately begins treating the child as family. That acceptance turns a former captor and rival into part of the household without pretending their history never happened. Cai is escorted by Maximilian at the mass wedding, exchanges vows with Lux, and becomes his wife alongside Iris and their other partners. Two years later, she remains part of the shared Heaven’s Gate household, coordinating family life with the other wives rather than withdrawing into a separate Rowan sphere. Her latest status is therefore not simply that of a surviving fighter: she is a bridge between the Rowan Tribe, Lux’s reconstructed guild, and the deliberately chosen family that outlasts the wars. Appearance and personality

Cai’s original form is a beautiful young woman with long brown hair and sun-kissed skin. Her public identity for much of the story is a light-brown boar, while her Gear transformations alter her size, fur, tusks, and markings. Hildisvíni is a four-meter black boar patterned with golden streaks and defensive spikes; Ysgithyrwyn is a three-meter white boar with massive tusks; Twrch Trwyth grows beyond five meters. In private or while serving ceremonially as High Priestess, she returns to human form and wears Rowan priestess clothing. (Chapters 260–267, 292, 486, 873)

In boar form, Cai is loud, boastful, food-motivated, and fond of exaggerating her accomplishments. The transformation also makes her more talkative and reduces her judgment somewhat, but her comedy does not make her foolish: she recognizes political necessities, studies plans before risking her life, and knows when an opponent is beyond her. Her deepest traits are loyalty and an aversion to seeing loved ones forced into unwanted choices. Those qualities motivate her attempt to protect Iris from a political marriage, her repeated defense of Lux, and her insistence that friends such as Henrietta be spared even while Cai is exhausted and captive. Cai can be irresponsible about routine obligations. Rose has to perform duties Cai misses while adventuring, and Cai often hides serious concerns under jokes or threats. Over time, however, the same impulsive affection becomes steadier responsibility. She supports soldiers during retreats, judges the emotional and political consequences of Lux’s other relationships with Iris, and accepts Queen Rhiannon and Dia into the family after the war. Her confidence remains shameless, but it increasingly serves collective survival rather than only her own amusement. (Chapters 529, 695, 900, 1044–1046, 1225–1233)

Therianthropy and abilities

Therianthrope shapeshifting

Cai learns Therianthropy easily because Rowan blood runs through her, but she can shapeshift only into a boar. Maximilian explains that her childhood admiration for his own giant-boar transformation imprinted that shape on her inner core. The form also accommodates her dislike of clothing and conceals her human identity. It is not permanent: at least once every three days, she must return to her original body for roughly thirty to sixty minutes, during which she locks herself away. Maximilian’s detection spell marks anyone who sees that true form, making secrecy a family-enforced protection rather than an inherent invisibility effect. (Chapter 277)

The ordinary boar body is more than a disguise. It supports powerful charges, tusk attacks, and the larger Gear transformations, and it lets Cai travel without revealing her status as a young High Priestess. Its drawbacks are behavioral as well as social: the narrative states that her intelligence regresses somewhat in boar form, which contributes to her heightened activity and chatter. Some priestly work also calls for human form; when warning Lux through the spirits, Cai indicates that she cannot conduct the necessary communication publicly while maintaining the boar disguise. Gear transformations

First Gear, Immovable Mountain, anchors Cai against incoming force and enlarges her body, allowing her tusk to stop Orion’s opening punch with little damage. Second Gear, Hildisvíni, reproduces a Rank 4 Mutated Field Boss: its tough hide shrugs off most attacks below Initiate Rank, while Giga Slam, Giga Impact, Grand Charge, and related collision attacks turn mass and momentum into destructive force. Hildisvíni’s specialty is physical endurance and close-range pressure, not universal immunity; the later anti-magic form is explicitly described as its complement. (Chapters 260–261, 280, 293)

Third Gear, Ysgithyrwyn, temporarily gives Cai the body and power of an Initiate-Ranked white boar. Its tusks project a roughly 150-foot cone that suppresses magic, letting hostile rays disappear on contact and allowing Cai to close on spell-dependent targets. Demolition Crash briefly makes her nearly invulnerable to damage and disabling effects so the charge can complete, but the attack places heavy strain on her. The entire form lasts only ten minutes and leaves her severely weakened afterward, so Cai must either finish the engagement or escape before the transformation fails. (Chapters 292–293)

Fourth Gear, Twrch Trwyth, channels the spirit of an Argonaut-Ranked boar given to Cai by Maximilian and temporarily raises her to a Ranker’s level. She can form a tusk-supported barrier capable of reducing an attack meant to kill Lux. The transformation does not make every Ranker equal: as an E-Ranker using it against a C-Ranker’s technique, Cai loses both tusks, her barrier, and eventually the transformed body, suffering injuries that nearly kill her. This makes Twrch Trwyth an emergency defense with a demonstrated catastrophic cost rather than a sustainable combat state. (Chapters 486–492)

Celestial Maiden Physique and Celestial Burst

Cai’s Celestial Maiden Physique lets her and an intimate partner accelerate each other’s cultivation. The stronger Lux becomes, the faster Cai’s rank rises, while their union also increases Lux’s strength. Their bond leaves a spiritual mark and synchronization that Cai later uses to resist Queen Rhiannon from inside her own spiritual world. The mechanism depends on their connection and does not automatically protect either partner from all mental or divine effects; Cai is still charmed by Rhiannon, and the gods’ later intervention can seal her memories of Lux. Celestial Burst converts that physique into immediate combat power. It raises Cai’s statistics by 2,000 percent for approximately five to ten minutes, allowing her Initiate-level self to fight at B-Rank and contend with Dreadnaught-Ranked monsters. The cost is extreme: when the burst ends, it burns away her current cultivation and regresses her to Beginner, below Apostle Grade. In the Abyss she accepts that loss to extract Iris and kill weaker Satyrs before the time limit expires, but the subsequent collapse leaves her unable to resist Ampelos. (Chapters 873–875)

Spirit arts, possession, and close combat

As High Priestess, Cai senses and communicates with spirits, receives warnings from them, and can allow a spirit to possess her so she can borrow its power for defense or self-defense. Training since childhood lets her retain a possessing spirit for days or even weeks. She weaponizes that discipline against Queen Rhiannon by deliberately allowing the possession, then using her synchronized bond with Lux to regain control and imprison the Demigod inside her. The containment is temporary—Cai estimates no more than a week—and her spirit access can be disrupted by planar law; immediately after entering the Abyss, she cannot sense the spirits that accompany her in Solais and Elysium. Cai is also an accomplished unarmed fighter trained by Maximilian alongside Rose. During Celestial Burst she combines speed with punches and kicks, targets enemies she can kill within the limited duration, and avoids wasting the burst in a prolonged duel with the Satyr leader. Her martial discipline supplements the Gear forms when she must fight as a human, while the Ranker-paralyzing poison used through her tusks demonstrates tactical use of external support. The poison is explicitly scarce, and Cai’s successful strikes depend on teammates creating openings against opponents who would otherwise kill her. (Chapters 468–469, 873)

Power progression

Cai’s formal practitioner rank must be separated from the temporary ranks of her transformations. Ysgithyrwyn produces Initiate-Rank power before Cai herself becomes an Initiate, and Celestial Burst briefly reaches B-Rank only by consuming her accumulated cultivation. Her own stable advancement reaches Initiate in Chapter 448 and peak C-Rank in Chapter 1031; after further physique-assisted growth, Chapter 1034 identifies her as a B-Ranker. The finalized landmarks below record each explicitly tracked advancement and regression without treating a temporary Gear form as stable cultivation.

• Lux: Cai first treats Lux as a tournament rival and useful expedition partner, then entrusts him with the rings she had prepared for Iris. She repeatedly risks herself to preserve his life because of what he means to Iris, and that protective friendship develops into mutual love. Their Celestial Maiden bond links emotional, spiritual, and cultivation growth; after losing all conscious memory of him, Cai chooses him again and ultimately becomes his wife. • Iris: Iris is Cai’s first best friend and the original reason she enters the Lionheart Tournament. • Fei Fei: Fei Fei is Cai’s contracted Golden Slime, constant companion, and trusted sounding board.
