Maximilian

Maximilian is the Saint who leads the nomadic Rowan Tribe and raises Cai as his granddaughter. He protects his people through personal deterrence, political judgment, and careful cultivation of younger fighters, while his warmth toward Cai often sits beside an alarming willingness to retaliate against anyone who harms her. (Chapters 276, 277, 311, 531)

Biography

Awakening and Leaf Village

Chapter 80 credits Lux’s honorary knighthood to “King Maximilian von Gweliven,” but the later corpus identifies Gweliven’s king as Uther and introduces Cai’s grandfather Maximilian as the Rowan chief in Chapter 276. No supplied passage securely equates those figures, so the early royal attribution is treated as a homonym or continuity ambiguity rather than evidence that the Rowan Saint ruled Gweliven. (Chapters 80, 276)

Once clearly introduced, Maximilian evaluates Lux and Keane as recruits for the Hidden Domain, promises fair compensation even if the expedition fails, and shields Gerhart by naming him his disciple. His motivation combines protection of the Rowan Tribe with the search for a cure to the Purple Plague. His Saint-ranked deterrence makes Cai politically untouchable and gives the nomadic tribe leverage against larger kingdoms. (Chapters 276, 311)

Open Heaven’s Gate

By the postwar wedding, Maximilian’s public role narrows into the familial responsibility that motivated many of his earlier choices. He escorts Cai down the aisle to marry Lux, placing his approval behind the union and entrusting his granddaughter to the ally he had assessed, tested, and repeatedly cooperated with. The gesture closes their long negotiation over Cai’s safety without diminishing Maximilian’s place as her protective elder. (Chapter 1232)

Appearance and personality

The corpus emphasizes Maximilian’s status and manner more than fixed physical detail: he is Cai’s grandfather and an older tribal chief whose smiles, teasing, and relaxed hospitality can quickly give way to lethal seriousness. He is perceptive enough to assess recruits beneath a fond expression and playful enough to embarrass Cai, yet outsiders regard him as a “powder keg” because devotion to his family and tribe overrides diplomatic restraint. (Chapters 276, 277, 311)

Abilities and skills

Maximilian is a Saint, a rank whose overwhelming statistics make his defection or anger a strategic threat to kingdoms. He practices Therianthropy and teaches the Rowan family art; Cai’s boar transformation develops partly from admiration of him. He can place a tracking spell that reveals anyone who sees Cai’s human form, and he helps prepare medicine from the Sacred White Lotus. These capabilities mix combat power, transformation lore, surveillance, and practical tribal leadership. (Chapters 277, 311, 531)

His power is not unrestricted across every domain. Entering the Domain of the Fallen wounds him and seals much of his strength, reducing him to S-Rank there and forcing him to use Rejuvenation Potions. The restriction shows that Saint status remains subject to spatial laws and hostile barriers; the corpus does not present a later formal advancement beyond Saint. (Chapter 661)

  • Vera: An old friend whose connection to Lux helps Maximilian place the Half-Elf within a trusted family network. (Chapter 277)
