Paired Wedding Rings

The Paired Wedding Rings are a matched set crafted by Maximilian and inscribed with the words “Forever by your side.” Beyond their ceremonial purpose, they connect their bearers across distance, reveal each other's locations, and protect their minds from hostile influence.

History

Cai's commission and gift

Cai commissions the rings from Maximilian while expecting to win the tournament and marry Iris rather than let her be forced into an unhappy match. After Lux wins, Cai offers the ornate box to him as part of a proposed dungeon alliance. Lux accepts, and Maximilian later recognizes one ring on his hand, confirms that Iris holds its pair, and converts the original commission into a congratulatory engagement gift. (Chapters 267, 277)

From engagement to marriage

The pair's inscription and effects make it both a promise and a protective tool during Lux and Iris's engagement. At the later group wedding, Eiko and Fei Fei carry a box from which Lux places rings on all ten brides. The scene does not identify that larger wedding set as the original pair, so the original rings should not be conflated with every ring used in the ceremony merely because Lux gives Iris a ring there. (Chapters 267, 1232)

Abilities and properties

  • Lets the two wearers speak to each other when they are in the same plane of existence; Cai's explanation further describes communication while both are on the same continent in Elysium. (Chapter 267)
  • Reveals the exact location of the other bearer regardless of where that person is in the world. (Chapter 267)
  • Prevents mind-affecting magic such as Charm, Fear, and Confusion from taking hold. (Chapter 267)
  • Grants limited resistance to Abyssal Corruption and slows its spread rather than curing it, while allowing the wearer to enter dense miasma without harm. (Chapter 267)
  • Its full properties initially exceed Lux's Appraisal ability and appear only as question marks; Cai supplies the functional explanation. (Chapter 267)
