Cethus
Cethus is a black-scaled Dragon Born Royal Guard assigned to supervise Lux in Karshvar Draconis. He initially treats lowlanders as inferiors and uses the reputations of his grandmothers, Lady Faustina and Lady Augustina, to hide his insecurity about falling behind other Dragon Born. Defeat, travel, and membership in Heaven’s Gate gradually turn that borrowed authority into genuine responsibility. Although his boasts and survival instinct never disappear, he ultimately holds the line for weaker guildmates, dies protecting them, and returns through true resurrection to build a life with Emma. (Chapters 418–419, 539–543, 1206–1221, 1234)
Biography
Heaven’s Gate and the continental wars
The Dragon King assigns Cethus to escort Lux to the Outer Reaches, observe his new guild, and apprehend him if he acts suspiciously. Cethus welcomes the duty as a chance to earn royal approval and acquire the subordinate that every other Royal Guard seems to possess. His position is fragile beneath the performance: he is only a middle-ranked Initiate, is disliked in the capital, and owes his place in the guard to Faustina’s service. When Lux reaches Initiate far faster than he did, Cethus insists on accompanying him to learn the secret of that growth. Lux makes him earn the place through a duel, and the resulting defeat strips away his claim that race, inherited equipment, and flight make him naturally superior. Cethus finally states his real motive without posturing—he wants to become strong too—and Faustina lets him leave because the setback may help him find both his own path and real friends. (Chapters 418–419, 535, 539–543)
Travel with Lux turns Cethus from an unwanted supervisor into an active member of the company. He helps defend the refugees of Abingdon Town, obeys Asmodeus when an enemy beyond their strength forces an evacuation, and uses the rewards of that rescue to build a gravity-based combat style. During the Haca war, he and Gerhart fight beside Heaven’s Gate but retreat when Lux warns that Great General Garret is approaching, showing that Cethus’s growing courage has not erased his desire to live. The deeper change appears at the Domain of the Fallen: despite being only an Initiate facing Rankers and High-Rankers, he invokes his royal status and his bond with Piccoro to protect Lux’s party from the Vahan Empire and the Crystal Palace’s coercion. He calls them servants in public, but tells Piccoro plainly that they are his guildmates and must not be harmed. (Chapters 558, 566, 585, 613, 629, 659)
The Dragon kingdoms and the Abyss
Inside the Domain of the Fallen, Cethus keeps Crystal Palace affairs confidential while rejecting its willingness to use other factions as cannon fodder. He defends Lux’s right to address Aur directly and heeds Lux’s warning about an invisible Argonaut-Ranked predator. When Lux is separated from the expedition, Cethus claims temporary leadership before the mixed group can splinter. His swagger helps, but his reasoning is practical: rival factions will not accept one another’s candidates, whereas his Royal Guard status can hold them together. He sends teams to gather information, forbids unnecessary engagements, and tells them to prioritize escape. Their first assault on the Gate of Famine ends in a one-sided defeat, and Cethus admits that Initiates cannot overcome its Dreadnaught-led force. Yet he returns once Lux arrives, not because his own power has changed, but because experience has taught him to trust Lux’s preparations and allies. (Chapters 660, 663–664, 682–690)
After the Gate is conquered, Cethus leaves to undertake his Ranker trial and later confirms that he has passed it. His first use of that new status is not a challenge or a boast: when Heaven’s Gate needs sanctuary from the Divine Army of Light, he offers to petition Augustina and argues that her protection can deter the faction threatening his guild. His family ties again provide political leverage, but this time he spends that leverage for other people rather than merely shielding himself. Faustina independently judges that guild life has made her grandson a better person, and Cethus stands openly in Karshvar Draconis colors when Heaven’s Gate relocates to the hostile territory of the Crystal Palace. He does not join the later rescue into the Abyss. Gaap selects five Dragon Born Saints because their racial resistance to charm is useful against a Demigod; Cethus’s new Ranker strength is still far below the mission’s combat threshold. (Chapters 711, 751, 787, 810, 813, 826, 877)
The Divine Army reckoning
Following Lux’s return from the Abyss, Cethus comes home as a D-Ranker and expects to celebrate reaching that rank before Gerhart. Discovering that Lux has already advanced to C-Rank converts pride into renewed urgency: Cethus insists on accompanying him because every dangerous journey seems to push the Half-Elf further ahead. He travels through Agartha and the Pantheon of Exile, accepts shelter inside Eiko when an acid storm exceeds his defenses, and flees immediately when Lux warns that two Calamity-Ranked monsters are escaping confinement. During the Xeno Kingdom’s Beast Tide, however, his specialization makes him useful against an opponent far beyond D-Rank. Cethus condenses Gravity Domain onto a Calamity-Ranked Roc so Avernus can drag it down, maintaining the restraint even while openly begging the Dracolich to protect him from the creature’s retaliation. (Chapters 915, 920, 935, 960)
Cethus, Gerhart, and Keane later follow Lux into the Lost Ark despite learning that a Demigod occupies its center. Cethus recognizes the Domain’s increasing gravitational pressure, calculates where his companions’ bodies will fail, and warns them not to cross that limit. When a Peak Empyrean World Boss deploys its own Gravity Domain, he focuses his ability against it so the two fields nullify one another. This does not make him the monster’s equal: concentration ties him to the contest, the raptor can still attack him, and Avernus must take over the direct battle. After the Divine Army conflict, Cethus admits his frustration at being unable to help and volunteers for Lux’s campaign against Twilight Rain. There he and Cai use comedy and borrowed Saint-level protection to rout immobilized High-Rankers, but his Gravity Domain materially compounds their restraint and helps clear the underground passages. The campaign shows both his limits and his place in the group: he is no independent answer to High-Rankers or Empyreans, yet his control ability creates openings that stronger allies can exploit. (Chapters 968–970, 1034–1041)
The rescue from the Abyss and the final war
As Abyssal Gates spread across Elysium, Cethus and Emma are the first Heaven’s Gate members to reach the Blackrock Clan before its portal is destroyed. Emma begins assembling a replacement while Cethus holds back the invading trolls. He expands Gravity Domain to cover a defensive line, uses gravitational spears to pin and crush a Dreadnaught-Ranked troll, and orders the local forces to reinforce a failing gate. Repeated bombardment breaks his domain, armor, and body, but he activates the field again instead of abandoning Emma. Gerhart and the guild arrive only after Cethus has exhausted himself to the edge of consciousness. In the final Void Battlefield, that same former weakling fights beside Gerhart in the sky and helps kill an Empyrean-Ranked Abyssal Wyvern. His private fear remains real, but he now approaches an impossible war beside people he trusts rather than using his grandmothers’ status to stay removed from danger. (Chapters 1115, 1182, 1203)
The decisive proof of that change comes when the Gyrocopter Legion begins falling around Heaven’s Gate’s floating island. Cethus uses Gravity Domain to pull Baby Slimes, dwarves, and kobolds out of exploding machines, then returns repeatedly because he cannot accept guildmates dying around him. When a Calamity-Ranked demon attacks the evacuees, his first impulse is to dodge, but he instead sends the others to safety and exhausts every life-saving artifact from Faustina and Augustina while taking the blast himself. Half his body is destroyed and he dies, leaving Gerhart, Keane, and their companions to avenge him. As a soul, Cethus finally admits to Lux that jealousy and hatred had accompanied their friendship, but also that Lux taught him strength is more than rank and made him capable of standing in a battle he once would have fled. He joins the dead in overwhelming Daniel, then receives true resurrection through the Pillars of Eternity and returns home alive rather than as an undead servant. (Chapters 1206–1208, 1211, 1216–1217, 1221)
Open Heaven’s Gate
Peace reveals relationships Cethus kept private during the invasion. Emma explains that they began speaking through Guild Chat after the two of them completed the mission that opened a teleportation route for Heaven’s Gate’s reinforcements. Their bond is serious enough to cross a boundary neither their companions nor their cultures expected: a Dragon Born and a dwarf had not formed such a relationship before. The guild nevertheless accepts them, and Cethus’s curiosity about other worlds soon returns in familiar form when he complains that Lux visited Earth without taking him. These developments preserve the loud, demanding companion the guild knows while showing that his most important choices no longer revolve around prestige in the Dragon capital. (Chapters 1115, 1224, 1229)
Cethus also joins the interplanetary Iron Man race, where flight cannot solve the swimming and cycling legs. He trains for those weaknesses, avoids the pirate bombardment through his own reactions, and ties Psoglav for first place after the final sprint is restarted. The Baby Slimes spare him during an earlier bombardment because he cared for them at headquarters and protected them during the war, turning an apparently comic advantage into a retrospective judgment of his conduct. At the joint wedding arranged by Lux, Cethus is more frightened of marriage than he had been before the battle with Daniel and wants to run, but Gerhart’s presence keeps him at the altar. Emma rejects the guild’s suspicion that Cethus manipulated her and says their feelings grew naturally from enjoying each other’s company. He therefore ends the supplied story not as the Royal Guard who wanted a subordinate to validate him, but as Emma’s chosen husband, surrounded by friends who know both his flaws and his loyalty. (Chapters 1230–1231, 1234)
Appearance and personality
Cethus is a Dragon Born whose entire body is covered in black scales. He has sharp, intimidating features, clawed hands, and broad dragon wings that support sustained flight and rapid aerial movement. His Royal Guard armor carries the insignia of Karshvar Draconis; his original armor and weapon are Legendary equipment inherited from his family, and both grandmothers later provide additional defensive artifacts. His armor can withstand ordinary combat but is not indestructible: concentrated magical attacks crack his barrier during the duel with Lux, and sustained Abyssal bombardment eventually shatters the armor entirely. (Chapters 418–419, 541, 826, 1115)
His habitual arrogance is both cultural prejudice and personal defense. Cethus grows up watching siblings, friends, and acquaintances outpace him, is bullied for his weakness, and learns to answer humiliation with the political power of his grandmothers. That history explains but does not excuse his early treatment of lowlanders and weaker people. He remains boastful, competitive, sensitive to ridicule, and quick to retreat from enemies he cannot defeat. Over time, however, he becomes more honest about danger and more willing to put himself between it and others. The friends who mock him also trust him with their lives, while his tenderness toward Baby Slimes and his private courtship of Emma reveal a patience that his public persona usually hides. (Chapters 419, 535, 810, 1203, 1206–1207, 1229–1231)
Dragon Born abilities
Dragon Born physiology and aerial combat
Cethus has the physical power, senses, wings, and breath weapons associated with Dragon Born. He can fight with claws, kicks, and a spear while airborne, and usually opens a duel by taking the sky so close-range opponents cannot reach him. His enhanced senses detect hidden observers and incoming attacks, while his wings give him speed, vertical mobility, and the ability to intercept flying monsters. These advantages remain conditional. Taunting or disabling magic can drag him from the air, stronger flying enemies can chase him, and injuries to his wings eventually end his mobility. His black scales and inherited armor improve his durability, but neither prevents paralysis, broken ribs, or lethal damage from opponents several ranks above him. (Chapters 419, 540–541, 545, 558, 585, 970, 1115)
Dragon Breath is his standard ranged attack. He exhales concentrated flame strongly enough to disperse some Rank 5 crescent attacks and later combines aerial breath pressure with allied attacks. It cannot be fired continuously: after one major blast in the Shaufell Plains, he needs approximately a full minute before he can use it again. The breath can also damage the group’s own battlefield conditions, as the combined blasts that block the mosquitoes temporarily open a gap in Ithaqua’s protective blizzard. Cethus separately projects an acid spray and aims it at a Rank 5 monster’s eyes to blind it, but the faster target dodges. Those encounters establish useful elemental reach rather than guaranteed control over stronger enemies. (Chapter 558)
Gravity manipulation and Gravity Domain
Cethus’s innate specialty is gravity manipulation, initially limited to his equipment. He reduces a weapon’s weight to accelerate a swing or throw, then sharply increases it at impact so an opponent must absorb much greater force. After the Abingdon rescue rewards him with a Rank 5 Skill Book, he selects Gravity Domain because it extends that personal talent to the surrounding battlefield. The early form creates a black dome and raises gravity throughout it to six times normal, grounding flying attacks and burdening every target caught inside. He can later condense the field onto one creature, as he does to force a Calamity-Ranked Roc downward, which reduces collateral pressure and lets a stronger ally capitalize on the opening. (Chapters 575, 585, 960)
Domain against domain is a contest of sustained control. Cethus can cancel the matching field of a Peak Empyrean World Boss by concentrating his own dome against it, but doing so occupies his attention and leaves him vulnerable to direct attacks. His sensitivity to gravitational changes also lets him identify a naturally doubled field, forecast its increase every two miles, and estimate the point at which his companions’ bones will fail. By the Abyssal invasion, he can raise his area to ten times normal gravity, form black gravitational spears that pin limbs, and apply roughly twentyfold pressure to crush a restrained Dreadnaught-Ranked troll. The stronger field has a severe endurance cost: ranged attacks still penetrate, repeated punishment shatters the domain, and maintaining it leaves him leaning on his spear before collapse. His latest major application uses the same force defensively, wrapping allies in black domes and carrying them away from explosions, though a second activation against a Calamity’s barrage leaves him unable to protect himself. (Chapters 969–970, 1115, 1206)
Spear technique and combined tactics
Cethus receives the sentient black spear Oblivion, the Impaler of the Forsaken, after the Abingdon mission. The weapon can communicate through its hum and coordinate the timing of a prepared attack. With Gravitas Dominion, Cethus first nullifies the spear’s gravity so it travels at the speed of sound, then increases its weight tenfold just before contact. He is accurate enough to choose a nonlethal shoulder strike during a duel, but the technique can still be defeated by a timed invulnerability effect; when Flamma’s artifact negates the impact, Cethus has no immediate answer and is knocked unconscious. The spear therefore magnifies his timing and control rather than bypassing defensive artifacts or rank differences. (Chapters 575, 585–587)
His most effective later tactics combine flight, the spear, and gravity with stronger partners. Against the Lost Ark’s World Boss, Cethus suppresses the enemy domain while Avernus handles close combat; against the Roc, he concentrates pressure so the Dracolich can force a crash; at the Blackrock fortress, he anchors a line long enough for Emma to construct a portal. These battles show his mature role as a controller and defender rather than a solitary duelist. He can immobilize or redirect forces stronger than himself for a limited period, but allies must finish those enemies, guard his exposed body, or arrive before exhaustion breaks the field. (Chapters 960, 969–970, 1115)
Notable encounters and deeds
- Duel with Lux: His air superiority, barrier, and Dragon Born confidence fail against coordinated taunts, magic, and undead attacks. The defeat makes him ask to travel with Lux and begins his break from racial superiority. (Chapters 539–543)
- Defense of Lux’s expedition: He confronts Vahan Rankers and uses his connections to Piccoro and the Crystal Palace to keep Lux’s coalition from being coerced, despite lacking the rank to defeat those opponents himself. (Chapters 658–660)
- Gate of Famine command: When Lux disappears, Cethus keeps multiple rival factions together, orders reconnaissance rather than blind combat, and accepts the limits revealed by their failed first assault. (Chapters 663, 682–683)
- Lost Ark gravity contest: He identifies the Domain’s escalating gravity and nullifies a Peak Empyrean World Boss’s matching field long enough for Lux’s force to win. (Chapters 969–970)
- Blackrock rearguard: He defends Emma while she rebuilds a teleportation gate, repeatedly restores a shattered Gravity Domain, and holds until Heaven’s Gate arrives. (Chapter 1115)
- Sacrifice at Edea: He rescues guild civilians from destroyed aircraft, refuses to evade a Calamity-Ranked barrage that would kill them, and dies after sending them to safety. His soul later joins the final attack on Daniel before Lux restores him to life. (Chapters 1206–1207, 1216–1221)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Middle Initiate | 419 | Cethus arrives as Lux’s Dragon Kingdom supervisor at the middle of Initiate Rank. |
| Ranker | 787 | Cethus confirms that he completed his Ranker Test and became a Ranker. |
| D-Ranker | By 915 | He returns boasting that he reached D-Rank before Gerhart. |
Cethus is already identified as a middle or intermediate Initiate when he meets Lux and again before their duel. He later completes a formal Ranker breakthrough and explicitly confirms passing his Ranker Test before the narrative next identifies him as a D-Ranker. The chapters do not isolate a lettered stage between that breakthrough and D-Rank, so the table records only the confirmed milestones rather than inventing an intermediate promotion. No chapter in the supplied corpus explicitly confirms a formal stage above D-Rank for him; his desire to reach B-Rank and his stronger gravity techniques are goals and ability development, not proof of a further rank advancement. (Chapters 419, 539, 659, 787, 915, 1084, 1115)
Relationships
- Lux: Cethus begins as Lux’s hostile supervisor and intends to make him a subordinate. Defeat makes him a traveling companion, and shared wars turn the relationship into loyalty strong enough for Cethus to defend Lux politically, trust his plans against impossible odds, and die protecting their guild. Cethus later credits Lux with teaching him that strength is not measured only by rank. (Chapters 418–543, 659, 683, 915, 1216–1217)
- Gerhart: Their insults and competition conceal one of Cethus’s closest friendships. They pursue Ranker breakthroughs in parallel, compare advancement, and repeatedly fight side by side. Gerhart retrieves Cethus’s body and avenges him after his death, while Cethus draws courage from Gerhart’s presence both in the final war and at his wedding. (Chapters 539, 629, 751, 915, 1115, 1182, 1207, 1234)
- Lady Faustina and Lady Augustina: His grandmothers protect and spoil him, enabling his early arrogance but also keeping him safe from those who mocked his weakness. Faustina welcomes his defeat as a needed correction, and both women later supply defensive artifacts that preserve him through increasingly dangerous battles. Cethus eventually uses their political influence to secure protection for Heaven’s Gate rather than merely advancing himself. (Chapters 418, 540–543, 659, 787, 813, 1115, 1203, 1206)
- Piccoro: Cethus calls the Crystal Palace Saint his uncle and relies on that relationship to deter the Vahan Empire. Piccoro constantly rebukes his mouth and exposes his bluffs, but honors Cethus’s request not to harm his guildmates and later participates in the Abyss rescue. Their arguments express a real family trust across the divided Dragon kingdoms. (Chapters 659, 683, 712, 826, 877)
- Emma: Cethus and Emma grow close while privately speaking through Guild Chat after their joint teleportation-gate mission. He nearly exhausts himself defending her while she rebuilds a gate during the invasion, and their relationship later becomes the first known romance between a Dragon Born and a dwarf. Emma insists that neither coercion nor trickery was involved, and they marry at the joint wedding. (Chapters 1115, 1229, 1234)
- Cai, Keane, and Eiko: The three are frequent targets of Cethus’s banter, but they become part of the circle that accepts his leadership, fights beside him, and mourns his death. Eiko and the Baby Slimes especially reveal his private gentleness: he cares for them at headquarters, sacrifices himself to protect them, and is rewarded by their affection after the war. (Chapters 659, 663, 1034–1041, 1206–1207, 1216, 1231)
