Huai River Map
The Huai River Map is a Si Family spirit-artifact scroll depicting the Huai River and bearing Cui Yan's inscription. It manifests Bright Yang river passes and provides powerful support, confinement, and defensive functions. Its loans and use in the Li Family's wars repeatedly distinguish the help it can provide from permanent transfer of the Si inheritance.
History
An ancient inheritance deployed at the river
Yuanxiu orders Yuanli to lend the map to Xuanfeng. Yuanli traces it to an ancestor who guarded the riverbank for Wei and identifies True Monarch Shangyao Cui Yan as its maker. The scroll itself bears the inscription naming Boye Cui Yan and the year 317 of Zhenghe. Its antiquity and Bright Yang nature make it particularly significant to cultivators defending the boundary between north and south. (Chapters 841, 862, and 869)
Xuanfeng unfolds it before the assembled northern forces and pours in spiritual sense and mana. Red light streams emerge, the sky brightens, the river becomes golden, and a white-brick pass rises from the water beneath him. Both of his Immortal Foundations receive a blessing, amplifying the position from which he uses his bow. Ximing's own foundation responds to the Bright Yang manifestation, giving him insight that later supports his secret-technique studies. The artifact's presence helps make Xuanfeng a formidable river guardian without making him its owner. (Chapters 869–880, 954, and 1010)
At the end of that deployment, the radiant pass vanishes back into the scroll as streams of golden light. Xuanfeng returns the map directly to Yuanli. The loan therefore ends with an explicit physical handover, preserving the Si Family's custody despite the map's importance to the Lis. (Chapter 880)
A retained treasure and a qualified alliance
Yuanli continues carrying and manifesting the map in later conflicts. Its enclosure isolates sounds from within and without when Nuxiao is confined, while Yuanli, as its master, can still hear what occurs inside. This combination gives him knowledge and control unavailable to people caught within the artifact's boundary. (Chapters 1559, 1583, and 1623–1624)
When Zhouwei requests its use during another battle, Yuanli hesitates over the possibility that Bright Yang power could wrest control from him. He ultimately uses the map himself to block the hostile spirit artifact and support Zhouwei, rather than surrendering its operation. Zhouwei later acknowledges the map's value and the abruptness of his request. Their exchange demonstrates that an ally can provide substantial help while still protecting an irreplaceable inheritance and retaining the ability to withdraw it. (Chapters 1704 and 1711)
Abilities and properties
River and pass manifestation
The apparently ordinary scroll opens through an ivory-white hook fastener and depicts five thousand kilometers of the Huai River, including vivid birds, beasts, banks, and its course into the Eastern Sea. Infusion of spiritual sense and mana releases light and forms a radiant river with a towering, intricately patterned white-brick pass. Its Bright Yang blessing reinforces Xuanfeng's foundations during the river defense. The depicted geographic reach is not a stated universal operating radius for every use of the artifact. (Chapter 869)
Enclosure, perception, and custody
The map can isolate sound around confined occupants, while its master remains able to hear events within. It also blocks a hostile spirit artifact during support for Zhouwei. These functions depend on the controller and circumstances; its owner's concern about Bright Yang wresting control is a practical limitation of lending it to a sufficiently powerful ally. Ximing can gain cultivation insight from it, but studying that insight does not transfer the artifact or prove that he can independently reproduce every function. (Chapters 1623–1624, 1684, and 1704)
