Li Chengliao
Li Chengliao is the capable family administrator who succeeds his father, Li Xicheng, as head of the Li family and later yields much of the household’s authority to his son, Li Zhouwei. He treats cultivation as a means to protect people and govern well, rather than as an end in itself. His judgment helps resolve a fraught marriage dispute, guide expansion into Mount Yue and Milin, and sustain the family through conscription and war. When he finally enters seclusion to attempt Foundation Establishment, he dies. The cause becomes clearer in Chapter 1084: the Azure Pond Sect’s pill supplied to him contained ingredients at odds with his Bright Yang Dao foundation. (Chapters 533–537, 617, 704, 726, 790, 959, 1023, 1084)
Biography
An heir learns to balance courtesy and danger
At sixteen, Chengliao is already the eldest among Xicheng’s children and a conspicuous young cultivator. He looks up to Li Yuanjiao, while his father prepares a marriage alliance with the Liu family. When Chengliao meets Liu Lingzhen, he recognizes that she loves Xu Xiao. Rather than force the match or turn the situation into a public contest, he acknowledges the mistake and encourages the Liu family to let the pair marry. His measured response wins the elders’ approval and prevents a personal choice from becoming a lasting grievance. (Chapters 496–497, 533–536)
The meeting also makes him curious about Xu Xiao’s unusual strength. Soon afterward, a black-flame incident kills Liu Yi and exposes a danger beyond Chengliao’s authority. He insists that Li Xijun be awakened and accepts responsibility for acting quickly. Courtesy serves him in ordinary disputes; when the family faces a threat, he can recognize the limits of his position and escalate the matter instead of pretending he can handle it alone. A later suggestion that his son’s destined birth might limit fate’s influence on Chengliao remains speculation, not proof that he was naturally immune to fate or divine abilities. (Chapters 534–537, 623)
Cultivation as a tool of governance
Chengliao reaches the fifth stage of Embryonic Breathing before Li Xijun entrusts him with the Golden Palace Radiant Origin Manual and a secret pill. By Chapter 617 he has entered Qi Cultivation; his first numbered heavenly layer is unknown. He applies himself to family affairs: inspecting flood embankments, arranging relief for commoners after disastrous rain, and quietly restoring Chen Mufeng to useful service after Mufeng’s demotion. (Chapters 533, 582, 617, 622, 650)
He does not treat advancement as a duty that outranks every personal bond. Chengliao says that cultivation is a tool for governing, and prefers teaching children or speaking with his wife to spending every day in seclusion. At this stage he doubts his prospects of Foundation Establishment, so his choice to prioritize the family and its people reflects both his practical nature and his understanding of his limits. (Chapters 617, 629–631)
A father prepares an exceptional heir
Chengliao’s wife, Madam Hu, survives a difficult pregnancy and gives birth to a son whose golden eyes alarm the elders. Chengliao takes the newborn to Qingdu so Li Xuanfeng can examine him; the reassurance and the name Zhouwei help him accept that the child is truly theirs. He is proud of the boy but careful about what his unusual traits might mean. Political examples become lessons for his son, and he arranges instruction and protection rather than assuming talent alone will keep Zhouwei safe. (Chapters 623–629, 673)
As Zhouwei grows, Chengliao lets him choose the halberd he favors, but starts him with a wooden weapon and an instructor. He seeks ways to conceal the boy’s striking eyes and accepts Li Xizhi’s advice about ancient taboos around body-and-soul cultivation, including caution over the child’s name and ritual bows. The family assigns Li Wushao as Zhouwei’s guardian. These precautions arise from the elders’ uncertainty, not from any confirmed explanation of Zhouwei’s gifts. (Chapters 645, 651, 654, 657, 673)
Expansion, succession and the cost of power
As the Li family takes control of Milin and extends into Mount Yue, Chengliao plans how to settle captured branches and govern newly acquired territory. He proposes relocating seven captured Yu families to the former shamanic strongholds, hoping they will restrain one another and deter blood sacrifices. Li Xijun cautions him to plan for the family’s next hundred years, and Chengliao adjusts his approach as they consider the risks of expansion and resettlement. He is a capable planner, but his proposals still require correction from elders with a longer view. (Chapters 668, 689, 704–708)
The family’s growth continues while older leaders die or retreat from public duties. By the time Xicheng dies during Foundation seclusion, Chengliao already holds the family headship. He grieves and handles his father’s remains while continuing to oversee the Milin branches and choose sites for new peak offices. His responsibilities include maintaining the household’s ties across generations as well as caring for his father’s final arrangements. (Chapters 704, 726)
Delegation and a household held together
Northern conscription strains the family, and Chengliao prepares provisions and pills while deciding which cultivators can be sent without leaving the household undefended. He takes on more administration as others are injured, absent or engaged in dangerous work. His stewardship includes representing the family at Tu Longjian’s celebration, traveling with the White Ape, and calmly handling tense visits and reports. (Chapters 747, 779–781, 795–796, 895)
Chengliao gradually delegates authority to Zhouwei as his son proves capable. By Chapter 790 he has reached late-stage Qi Cultivation and handed over most family affairs before returning to cultivation. He can resume public responsibilities when the household needs him: he reports on reorganized western-shore families, performs formal rites, and receives visitors. In Chapter 917, following an elder’s instructions, he lifts White Lightning from the ritual table and presents it to Li Yuanqin. This is a formal handoff on behalf of the family, not evidence that the bow belongs to Chengliao. (Chapters 790, 907–908, 916–917)
The last administration and a fatal breakthrough
After further conflict and loss, Chengliao continues managing the family’s settlement and succession. He studies how new households are gaining strength, allocates dwellings and cultivation resources to promising youths, and welcomes Zhouwei home after a long absence. His careful administration leaves the island with a more settled, organized character, though his concern for the future also makes visible how much the household relies on a small number of capable leaders. (Chapters 935, 940–941, 955)
Chengliao enters seclusion to prepare for Foundation Establishment, leaving authority once again in Zhouwei’s hands. The attempt fails, and his death is reported by Chapter 1023. Later, in Chapter 1084, Li Ximing examines the Azure Pond Sect’s Essence Gathering Pills and finds that the main ingredients given to Chengliao were Veiled Yin or Radiant Essence, incompatible with his Bright Yang Dao foundation. The mismatch compromised his breakthrough attempt. Who chose the ingredients and whether the mistake was deliberate remain unknown. (Chapters 959, 1023, 1084, 1159)
Appearance and personality
As a young man Chengliao is described as thick-browed and outwardly unremarkable, yet he commands attention while training. Later he is shown riding the wind, dressed in formal robes and carrying himself with a stern, radiant bearing after retraining in the family’s Radiant Essence Scripture. He is warmest in private with his wife and children, and openly delighted when Zhouwei returns after a long absence. (Chapters 496, 629, 704, 907, 916, 955)
He is measured, observant and responsible. He prefers workable compromises to displays of authority, as when he supports Lingzhen’s choice, and he takes personal responsibility for public services such as flood relief. He can be pragmatic to the point of proposing risky policies, but listens when an elder identifies longer-term consequences. As a father and leader, he is protective without demanding that his son remain dependent: he equips and guides Zhouwei, then lets him assume authority when ready. (Chapters 534–537, 622, 650, 668–708, 790)
Abilities and cultivation
Immortal Dao cultivation
Chengliao follows the Golden Palace Radiant Origin Manual and receives a secret pill before entering Qi Cultivation. His Bright Yang Dao foundation is later identified when the ingredients of his failed Foundation Establishment pill are examined. He reaches late-stage Qi Cultivation but dies during his attempt to establish a Foundation; no successful Foundation advancement is recorded. (Chapters 582, 617, 790, 959, 1023, 1084)
He can ride the wind and condense true essence. By Chapter 916 he has retrained in the Li family’s Radiant Essence Scripture, whose radiant, dazzling essence gives him a stern presence. His personal spell set and later cultivation stage remain unknown. (Chapters 704, 916)
Administration and leadership
Chengliao’s clearest strength is practical judgment in family affairs. He organizes relief, manages territory and branches, prepares for conscription, allocates resources, and delegates when Zhouwei becomes more capable. His work helps turn expansion into functioning governance, though his plan to resettle captured Yu families shows that effective policy can still create risks and needs scrutiny. (Chapters 622, 650, 704–708, 726, 747, 790, 940–941)
Sword and weapon practice
As a young cultivator, Chengliao trains with a sword and later carries the Dragon Coiling Pillar at his waist while reporting to Xijun. Carrying the pillar does not establish Sword Dao mastery or a separate divine ability. His fighting capability is not presented as the source of his family’s standing; his administrative decisions and cultivation are better-attested. (Chapters 496, 704)
