White Ape

The White Ape begins as an injured, collared spirit monkey pulled from the ruins of the devil plague. Li Xuanxuan treats it with compassion, and the ape repays that care with protection, medicinal skill and generations of service to his family. It becomes more than a fighter: it records plant knowledge, guards the Wanglin Blossom, watches over Li Chengliao and Li Zhouwei, and helps the clan endure threats. At age 453 it unexpectedly completes its hereditary Stone Embrace Slumber foundation, gaining a longer life and a human form. Its longevity brings perspective rather than invulnerability; even as a trusted elder it can be gravely wounded, and it remains a guardian rather than a leading power. (Chapters 383–389, 427–438, 536–650, 781, 1114–1176, 1389–1499)

Biography

Rescue from the devil plague

The spirit monkey survives the destruction of a marketplace by hiding in a fire vein, but the heat, poison and injuries leave it trapped beneath a boulder and close to death. When Li Xuanxuan finds it, he breaks the rock, returns the jade pestle and tends the creature instead of treating it as loot. The ape’s lucid, aged gaze reveals intelligence despite its inability to speak; its burned vocal cords limit it to gestures. (Chapters 383–389)

Once it recovers, the ape fights beside Xuanxuan against a devil cultivator and helps prevent a reincarnation remnant from escaping. Its violence is purposeful protection, shaped by gratitude toward the person who saved it. It flees the ruins with Xuanxuan and Li Qiuyang, then asks through gestures to remain with the Li family. The household gains a fourth-layer Qi cultivator and medicine expert, while the ape finds a refuge where it can turn survival into service. (Chapters 384–389)

Medicine, literacy and dependable service

The ape’s long experience as a spirit beast gives the Li family practical knowledge that its combat strength alone could not provide. It recognizes the Wanglin Blossom’s need for a steady spiritual supply and warns that unsuitable spring water would poison its roots. It records plant properties and supplies the family with knowledge gathered through centuries of tending herbs; Li Yuanjiao values these notes as an inheritance for future cultivators rather than a cache to strip and sell. (Chapters 390–396, 411, 422–429)

The ape learns to write and contributes the Travel Notes and detailed medicinal observations to the family’s records. It accepts cultivation resources and joins campaigns when needed, but its most durable value is the dependable support it provides between battles: tending plants, helping preserve rare knowledge and protecting the spirit root on which clan income depends. Its role grows through trust and repeated competence, not through an imposed collar or fear of punishment. (Chapters 395–396, 423–438)

Guardian of Chengliao and Zhouwei

By the time it reaches the eighth layer of Qi Cultivation, the quiet ape is assigned to guard Li Chengliao. It rarely speaks or seeks company, but watches closely enough to intercept a threatening seal during a household crisis. Its restraint suits Chengliao: the ape can stand guard without turning every perceived slight into a fight. (Chapters 536–541)

Later it sweeps the courtyard where the young Li Zhouwei practices calligraphy, lights lamps and asks visitors to let the child rest. When Zhouwei suddenly seizes Chen Yang by the throat and knocks him down, Li Xuanxuan tells the ape to carry Chen away and use the Meditation Spell to calm him. It rarely gives long speeches, but it can produce a hoarse voice by resonating mana through its damaged throat. These acts make it both a discreet defender and a familiar presence in the family’s private life. (Chapters 645, 649–650, 654–665)

An unexpected foundation and the duties of age

After a long life and prolonged seclusion, the ape completes its Stone Embrace Slumber foundation at age 453. The breakthrough transforms it first into a huge white ape and then into a white-haired old man. Its increased lifespan is expected to exceed four centuries, a startling reprieve for a creature that had assumed its prospects were poor. The transformation brings strength and a fuller capacity to serve, but the ape does not mistake a long life for freedom from loss or danger. (Chapter 781)

Its clear qi can nourish Li Xuanxuan’s aged body, and Xuanxuan greets it as an old friend rather than a beast to command. Li Ximing trusts it with lake patrol and later with messages and journeys alongside Zhouwei. The ape accompanies Chengliao, meets Tu Longjian, welcomes Li Xijun back and helps Zhouwei travel to Mount Dali. At a gathering after a stag’s ordeal, it gently strokes the crying animal’s back, then condemns Zhao Xie for using karmic retribution to toy with people’s lives; the exchange shows its sorrow for victims and its impatience with cruelty disguised as moral judgment. (Chapters 781, 858–909, 954–989)

The lake’s patient defender

The Li family’s expansion places the ape among the guardians who face dangers beyond their personal strength. It helps hold Mang Huazi in custody, fights Golden Tang forces with the other defenders and reports the capture of An Siwei. Its most sustained duty is the Wanglin Blossom: after returning to heal from the river battle, it resumes guarding the tree and continues that work for decades. The tree’s survival provides medicine and recurring income, so patient stewardship matters as much as any single victory. (Chapters 1077–1114, 1160–1164)

During the Situ family’s assault the ape takes its enormous true form to protect its companions. A golden hook pierces its chest, and torn flesh leaves bone exposed, showing that its foundation does not make it immune to stronger attackers. Miaoshui directs Sun Bai to treat the ape even while suffering her own severe wounds. It recovers and returns to its post. Later the ape accompanies Zhouwei, gathers uncertain reports about a hidden white-furred ruler and makes a courtesy visit that doubles as a diplomatic test; the intended host has entered seclusion and refuses to meet. The ape continues to serve without presenting rumor as fact or allowing its service to make it the region’s foremost power. (Chapters 1175–1176, 1287, 1389, 1437, 1464–1466, 1499)

Appearance and personality

When first found, the ape is soot-covered, exhausted and badly burned. After recovery its fur is snow-white, its face wrinkled and intelligent, and it stands only about five chi tall. Its vocal cords are ruined, so it relies on gestures until mana resonance gives it a sparse, emotionless hoarse voice. After its foundation breakthrough it can take a hall-sized ape form with gray eyes, massive fists and pale auras around its wrists, as well as the form of a white-haired old man. (Chapters 383, 389, 395, 650, 781, 1176)

The ape is quiet, loyal and observant. It repays Xuanxuan’s compassion, accepts the family’s responsibilities and treats dependents gently. Its judgment is not blind obedience: it recognizes manipulative cruelty and speaks against people who use moral or Buddhist language to disguise harm. Hundreds of years of experience make it patient and useful, but do not make it all-knowing or too strong to need protection. (Chapters 650, 781, 989, 1499)

Abilities and cultivation

Stone Embrace Slumber

Stone Embrace Slumber is the ape’s hereditary True Essence foundation among the Twelve Essences. The ape completes it late in life, at age 453. The transformation strengthens the body, extends its lifespan and allows it to assume a massive ape form or a human form. The foundation also restores flesh and bone toward their truest state, lets the body merge with True Essence, pierces illusion and can provide insight into hearts. Its effects are not a license for unlimited mind-reading or invulnerability. (Chapter 781)

The breakthrough changes the ape’s role from an old Qi cultivator into a durable Foundation guardian. Its clear qi can nourish Xuanxuan’s aged body, and its expanded body can help defend the lake. Stronger opponents can still wound it: the Situ assault leaves a golden hook through its chest and exposes bone. No later substage or Golden Core advancement is established. (Chapters 781, 1176)

Medicine and spirit-plant care

Centuries of handling medicines and living among spirit plants make the ape a capable diagnostician and record keeper. It recognizes when a plant lacks spiritual nourishment and warns that water carrying incompatible cold or metallic poison will damage the Wanglin Blossom. Its written notes preserve herb properties for later family members, while its daily care helps the tree continue producing valuable blossoms. This expertise depends on suitable conditions and does not create inexhaustible spiritual supply or protect the ape from every poison. (Chapters 390–396, 411, 422–429, 1114, 1389)

Physical defense and implements

The ape combines Qi cultivation, great physical strength and close-range blows with practical tools such as its jade mortar and pestle, staff and simple stone armor. As a fourth-layer cultivator it joins the family’s devil-cultivator sweeps; at fifth and eighth layers it continues those duties and can guard Chengliao. After its foundation breakthrough its true form can help hold a defensive line, but the golden hook wound shows the limit of this role against a stronger attacker. (Chapters 427, 536–541, 781, 1114, 1176)

Meditation Spell and mana speech

At Xuanxuan’s instruction, the ape uses the Meditation Spell to calm Chen Yang after Zhouwei physically attacks and threatens him. The scene does not establish mind control or a universal ability to erase fear. The ape’s mana also resonates through its damaged vocal cords, allowing short, hoarse speech where gestures had previously been necessary. The voice remains sparse and flat in tone, fitting a guardian who speaks mainly when someone needs help or warning. (Chapters 650, 665)

Judgment, guardianship and diplomacy

Long service has made the ape a careful observer of people and danger. It protects children, keeps watch over the Wanglin Blossom, reports threats and carries messages for the family. It can help with diplomacy through measured conduct and a respectful visit, but its knowledge is not prophecy: it marks uncertain rumors as uncertain, and a refused audience tells the Li little beyond the other party’s unwillingness to meet. (Chapters 989, 1114, 1389, 1499)
