Li Xicheng
Li Xicheng is Li Yuanyun’s eldest cultivating son and Li Xijun’s elder brother, remembered for generous service and seventeen years governing the household.
Biography
Brotherly loyalty and the burden of leadership
With average talent and a father unable to cultivate, Xicheng grows up with fewer advantages than some of his cousins. Even after being passed over for a talisman seed, he treats the younger members of his generation as brothers rather than competitors. He buys Xizhi a jade pendant from his savings before the boy leaves for the sect and carefully prepares the separate sacrificial ceremony he is entrusted to lead. When Yuanjiao discusses scarce spiritual qi, Xicheng immediately offers to leave it to Xijun. His sincerity wins Yuanjiao’s trust and a secret Barrier Breaking Pill to support his own advancement. (Chapters 335, 348, 364 and 413–414)
Xicheng’s main contribution is administration. During the expansion around the spirit-jade mines, he restrains disorderly clan soldiers, confronts the Rui Family’s human-derived tribute and implements Yuanping’s alternative: cultivation land under a twenty-percent tax. After reaching Qi Cultivation, he oversees family affairs, scouts and discipline. As family head he balances punishment with distinctions between guilty and cooperative branches, though the work exhausts him and he feels responsible for Chen Mufeng’s conduct. Yuanping’s final instruction that he must rely on himself leaves him grieving the elder who trained him. (Chapters 391–392, 436, 523 and 546)
He eventually passes leadership to his son Chengliao and attempts a breakthrough in seclusion. His shattered Life Jade announces his death, and the family finds no remains. Despite seventeen years of household leadership, his estate contains almost nothing to divide: he has given his acquisitions to struggling cultivators inside and outside the clan. Xizhi’s memory of the inexpensive pendant and Xijun’s grief reveal the lasting effect of quiet acts of loyalty, alongside the burden Xicheng felt for occupying the place Ximing had relinquished. (Chapter 726)
Appearance and personality
Xicheng has a plain, honest appearance and a reserved manner. As he matures he grows a beard, develops a dignified bearing and is described as tall and broad-shouldered with a square face. His generosity does not prevent him from condemning soldiers whose greed disgraces the family. (Chapters 348–349, 391, 436 and 523)
Abilities and cultivation
He progresses from the third Embryonic Breathing stage to the fifth, receives a Barrier Breaking Pill intended to help him reach the sixth, and later cultivates the River One Qi Technique in the Qi Cultivation Realm. He reaches the fourth heavenly layer by the time he reports on the destroyed devil lair. His demonstrated strengths are careful administration and command; the pill’s intended effect is not itself proof of a completed stage. His final higher-realm attempt ends in death. (Chapters 349, 414, 436, 523 and 726)
