Ashes

Ashes is an Extraordinary witch rescued and named by Tilly Wimbledon, whose service as Tilly's guard grows into an explicitly mutual romantic bond. Initially committed to an isolated refuge for witches, she comes to accept Roland Wimbledon and Neverwinter's model of cooperation, fights for its expanding alliance, and becomes the first new Transcendent in more than four hundred years. She dies after burning beyond her body's limit to destroy the Magic Slayer, though the possibility that her Transcendent self left a recoverable mark in the Realm of Mind remains a claim rather than a confirmed return.

Biography

From the monastery to Tilly's side

Ashes is born in the Kingdom of Everwinter and sold to the Church while young. At a monastery in the Old Holy City, she and other captive girls are subjected to abuse; after awakening as a witch, she kills managers and Judges while escaping. She also saves a girl who later becomes Wendy, although the two do not know one another well at the time. The Church burns the monastery to erase the scandal, and God’s Punishment soldiers pursue Ashes. Their artificial strength matches her own, their lack of ordinary pain or hesitation defeats her expectations about wounded opponents, and one leaves the scar over her eye. She escapes, then raids churches and Judge camps for revenge until a citywide search forces her to leave the Holy City. (Chapters 156–158)

Still nameless and wandering, she returns to King's City intending to assassinate an archbishop during Tilly's public coming-of-age ceremony. A resonance between their magic interrupts that purpose: Tilly notices her in the crowd, brings her into the palace, offers concealment and a permanent home, and names her for the ashes left by the destroyed monastery. Ashes becomes Tilly's guard, receives instruction from the palace's fencing masters, and places Tilly above any title or organization. Her loyalty is not merely feudal service. When she first explains it to Theo, she calls Tilly the one person no one can replace. (Chapters 156, 167–168)

That history shapes both Ashes' strengths and her early limits. She has learned that organized authorities can hide abuse, that ordinary assurances fail when the Church arrives, and that even her exceptional body can be overwhelmed. She therefore trusts her own vigilance and Tilly's judgment more readily than laws or secular rulers. When Tilly organizes a migration to the Fjords, Ashes escorts rescued witches toward a deliberately separate homeland and travels to Border Town to recruit the former Witch Cooperation Association. Her proposal is protective rather than expansionist, but it assumes that coexistence on the mainland will inevitably fail. (Chapters 156–158)

Testing Roland's sanctuary

Ashes reaches Border Town expecting to expose a fragile arrangement between a lord and dependent witches. Instead, she finds witches walking openly, children studying after dark, and guards treating the castle as the witches' home. Wendy thanks her for the monastery escape but refuses to abandon Roland; the other women likewise reject Ashes' invitation. Their unity frustrates her because paper contracts cannot answer the God’s Punishment Army she has fought. She challenges Roland's capacity to protect them, while he reframes the dispute as a practical test of whether ordinary people and new weapons can oppose a Church force. (Chapters 157–159)

The resulting contest with Carter Lannis corrects both sides' assumptions. Ashes reads his revolvers as unfamiliar ranged weapons, throws a screen of earth, changes direction under fire, and crosses fifteen meters in seconds. A 12-millimeter steel-cored round breaks through her old blade and tears open her abdomen, yet her momentum still sends Carter flying; she remains standing long enough to claim the win. Nana Pine restores her damaged body, and Ashes acknowledges that a firearm can threaten fighters comparable to the God’s Punishment Army. Roland, in turn, accepts the result and gives her a new steel greatsword rather than treating her as an enemy. (Chapters 163 and 167–169)

She returns to Tilly with more than a tactical report. Border Town has shown her that witch safety can rest on shared institutions, disciplined soldiers, and useful work instead of flight alone; Roland has shown enough change from the dissolute prince she knew at court to merit reconsideration. Ashes does not immediately abandon Sleeping Island, and she continues to scrutinize Roland's motives, but she stops dismissing the Western Region as a doomed refuge. Later visits, the Sleeping Island exchange, and the discovery of the ancient war gradually turn the two communities into allies. (Chapters 169, 174, 222–234, and 285–286)

Defending a community rather than a faction

On Sleeping Island, Ashes operates as Tilly's closest protector and a visible check on internal violence. She accompanies negotiations, watches over the witch settlement, and shares an informal domestic life with Tilly beneath their public roles. When the Bloodfang Association treats combat witches as superior and tests Tilly's authority, Ashes wants to confront Heidi Morgan directly. Tilly instead permits Bloodfang witches to visit Neverwinter so that ordinary cooperation can challenge their assumptions. Ashes accepts that strategy even though restraint is harder for her than force. (Chapters 320, 530–531, and 581)

Heidi eventually arranges an attempt to kill Tilly. After the conspiracy is exposed, Ashes brings the captured Bloodfang leader to Neverwinter and, on Tilly's order, executes her. The act protects Sleeping Island from a leader who had tried to seize it, but it offers Ashes no triumph: she sees how deeply the betrayal wounds Tilly and provides private comfort once public decisions are complete. When Tilly later decides that the Church's defeat has ended the island's original emergency mission, Ashes promises to remain at her side regardless of whether that means Neverwinter, the Fjords, or a battlefield. (Chapters 589–598 and 682)

Relocation changes Ashes' understanding of the former factional divide. In the Southernmost Region, she works with Andrea Quinn and Echo to support Roland's alliance with the Sand Nation, then accepts a challenge from Lorgar Burnflame. Ashes studies Lorgar's transformed body, evades sweeping claws and tail strikes, uses a leap to reach the wolf woman's blind side, and wins without treating the duel as a license to kill. She introduces the wounded Lorgar to Nana and describes the demons, turning a rival's hunger for combat toward the larger war. (Chapters 715–725, 760–770, and 817–850)

The Taquila reconnaissance makes the same growth explicit. Iffy, once part of Bloodfang, objects when Ashes proposes a dangerous ascent with a Stone of Flight; Ashes is touched to realize that Iffy's concern is genuine and that they now think as one team. Her plan still relies on personal risk, but it contains alternatives for different enemy numbers and a retreat threshold. When far more Devilbeasts appear than expected, she does not indulge her confidence: she marks Taquila's position, dives back through Orbit's corridor, trusts Iffy's cage to stop her fall, and orders the group away. The woman who once trusted only force has learned to build her strength into collective action. (Chapters 900–918)

Preparing for a war no fighter can win alone

Ashes trains constantly because an Extraordinary's development is tied to physical stress and combat. Sparring with Lorgar refines her timing; discussions with Taquila survivors teach her that Extraordinaries can cross into a qualitatively different Transcendent state, usually in lethal battles. She understands the warning rather than romanticizing it. During an early clash with the Magic Slayer, its speed, wind attacks, shield, and wide anti-magic field demonstrate an opponent who can negate ordinary witches while still matching her in close combat. Ashes protects Leaf, weakens a magic cyclone with the anti-magic material in her sword, and survives, but the encounter confirms that individual superiority is not enough. (Chapters 768, 900–929, and 1103–1106)

Her protective duty also becomes a matter of judgment rather than obedience. Assigned to guard Leaf, Ashes notices an anomalous fire after apparently leaving with Tilly, requests permission to remain, and intercepts the Magic Slayer when it attacks. Later she serves as general protector for the Special Unit built around Andrea's long-range God's Stone shot. She loads the enormous bullet, braces Andrea after the recoil, monitors the team's retreat, and carries the Sigil of Listening that connects them to scouts. These are supporting roles designed around other people's abilities, a marked change from her earliest assumption that one invulnerable champion could secure a refuge. (Chapters 1103–1106 and 1151–1161)

Before the ambush, Tilly insists on piloting the supporting aircraft because she will no longer wait at the rear while Ashes takes every risk. Ashes objects on safety grounds but cannot answer Tilly's point that leadership also requires sharing controlled danger. Tilly kisses her and asks to remain together as they once were in King's City; Ashes responds by asking for another kiss and embracing her. Their feelings had long been evident through intimacy and devotion, but this exchange makes the romantic relationship mutual and explicit. Ashes enters the mission with reunion in view, not with an intention to die. (Chapter 1152)

The choice to transcend

Andrea's shot appears to kill the Magic Slayer, but the target is a decoy and Ursrook emerges from a prepared tunnel. He wounds Margie, identifies the unit's key abilities, and combines his anti-magic field with hidden demons and long-range stone needles. Ashes stands between him and the wounded witches while the God’s Punishment fighters organize a retreat. She orders Lightning to destroy the Spider Demons and tell Tilly to run, accepting separation because the aircraft and survivors will be endangered if they return too soon. (Chapters 1159–1161)

Under sustained pressure, Ashes' magic accelerates and sharpens her body until time seems slower and every detail becomes visible. The improvement is still insufficient: she can rescue one person or attack one demon, but not answer simultaneous threats. She recognizes the onset of a power rebound and knows she could withdraw, recover, and live with a stronger Extraordinary body. Instead, recalling that a Transcendent must lift her limit and accept magic without the body's ordinary restraint, she chooses the aim that has defined her development—protecting the others. She perceives a vast sea of magic, accepts its power, and becomes a Transcendent. (Chapter 1163)

Her first Transcendent strike produces golden divine lightning without a Sigil of God's Will, burns away the lesser demons, and gravely wounds Ursrook through his anti-magic area. The effect is not a stable new technique. Magic continues flooding into Ashes faster than she can control it, dissolving her flesh and rebounding through every vein, while repeated thunder requires time to gather and cannot be aimed precisely once control deteriorates. Ursrook also evolves by taking another demon's Magic Stone, recovers, and adapts during their close fight. To create charging time, Ashes deliberately accepts his claws through her chest and locks him in an embrace. (Chapters 1163–1166)

Ursrook's corrupting power nearly breaks that hold and disconnects parts of Ashes' body from her control. Lightning returns with grenades, shatters the demon's defensive stone and shield, and gives Ashes the instant needed to release all accumulated power. The resulting thunder destroys Ursrook, but the expenditure consumes Ashes' physical form. She tells Lightning that she demanded more of magic than her body could bear, asks her to tell Tilly that she likes her, and dissolves into light. Neverwinter buries an empty coffin beside the remains of her half-melted sword. Much later, Roland tells Tilly that a Transcendent may leave a mark in the Realm of Mind and might therefore be retrievable. He explicitly cannot verify the claim within the supplied corpus, so Ashes' latest confirmed physical state remains deceased. (Chapters 1166–1168 and 1224–1232)

Appearance and personality

Ashes is a young woman with long black hair usually tied into a ponytail down to her waist. She wears a black robe when first traveling to Border Town and carries an oversized dark greatsword. A God’s Punishment soldier left a scar over one eye during her escape from the Old Holy City. Her eye color changed when she became a witch; in the final battle, after she crosses her limit, Lightning specifically sees her eyes as golden. The corpus repeatedly conveys exceptional strength and a formidable build through comparison and action, but does not provide a precise height or ordinary eye color. (Chapters 156–158, 167, 682, 768, and 1163)

She is direct, guarded, and more comfortable solving an immediate danger than navigating layered politics. Early on she lets Theo eat first in case food is poisoned, threatens anyone who might harm witches, and trusts established power only after testing it. That caution coexists with dry humor, a love of meat and Neverwinter's food, and an unexpectedly domestic tenderness around Tilly. Andrea's teasing can make her competitive, while Tilly can reduce the “invincible Extraordinary” to visible disappointment simply by cancelling a shared meal. (Chapters 156–160, 382, 485, 596, 837, and 1152)

Her defining trait is loyalty, but it matures from personal exclusivity into chosen solidarity. Tilly always remains irreplaceable; Ashes' final message confirms that the bond is romantic as well as protective. Yet she learns to respect Roland, accept former Bloodfang opponents, trust support witches with her life, and sacrifice herself for companions beyond her original faction. She likes challenges and can appear reckless, but the Taquila reconnaissance shows that she retreats when fighting would endanger the group. Her last decision is therefore not simple battle hunger: she takes a knowingly fatal risk only after concluding that withdrawal would leave everyone else trapped. (Chapters 156, 169, 531, 682, 917, 1152, and 1161–1166)

Magic and abilities

Ashes begins as an Extraordinary, a rare witch whose magic permanently strengthens her own body rather than producing an external phenomenon. Combat, training, and recovery progressively expand that enhancement. In her final battle she opens the way to the Realm of Mind and becomes a Transcendent, gaining divine power at the price of losing control of the magic flooding through her.

Extraordinary body and magical sense

Ashes' innate power reinforces muscle, bone, speed, endurance, reflexes, and healing. She can carry and swing a sword too heavy for an ordinary person to lift, cross a short battlefield before a trained shooter can fire more than a few rounds, catch ordinary crossbow bolts, survive catastrophic wounds long enough to keep fighting, and recover shallow injuries in roughly one or two hours. Regular fighting practice improves those traits, and an intense battle can drive them into a temporary or permanent advance. Nana's restoration after the Carter duel repairs missing tissue through Nana's magic rather than Ashes' own healing; Ashes' greater strength upon waking suggests development after the fight, but not autonomous regeneration of that scale. (Chapters 156–169, 768, and 1159)

Because the enhancement is internal, God's Stones of Retaliation do not remove it as they suppress ordinary external abilities. Ashes can therefore wear, carry, or wield anti-magic material while retaining her physical power. She also senses the presence, flow, and approximate intensity of magic in other witches, identifies Scroll as another Extraordinary, and feels threats that ordinary sight misses. She does not literally see magic as Nightingale or Sylvie does, and her perception can be deceived by Ursrook's decoy and concealment. (Chapters 156–159, 530, 917, and 1159–1160)

The body remains finite. Bullets can penetrate her weapon and flesh, God’s Punishment soldiers can match her physical statistics, attacks that exceed her reaction speed still land, and serious damage causes blood loss, pain, or loss of strength. A Stone of Flight can lift her, but it does not grant Tilly's fine control and leaves only a fraction of Ashes' ground-fighting strength usable in the air. Magic Slayer fields do not erase her enhanced body, yet can suppress allied abilities and create attacks strong enough to contest her directly. (Chapters 157–169, 917, and 1103–1106)

Greatsword combat and tactical practice

Ashes' swordsmanship combines palace instruction with experience acquired while hunted. She judges distance and momentum instinctively, uses the broad blade as shield and terrain tool, deflects projectiles, exploits blind angles, and varies between controlled sparring and lethal force. The physical enhancement supplies speed and impact, but her best results depend on reading an opponent: she beats Lorgar by learning the geometry of the wolf form, abandons aerial reconnaissance when enemy numbers invalidate the plan, and protects Andrea's team by prioritizing threats rather than chasing Ursrook. (Chapters 163–169, 768, 917, and 1159–1161)

Her principal weapon is Ashes' Greatsword. Roland and Anna replace her crude iron blade with a steel weapon after the Carter duel; a later version incorporates God’s Stone material, allowing a swing to disrupt external magic. The suppression is not absolute: Ursrook's cyclone is weakened rather than fully erased. That anti-magic effect belongs to the weapon's material, not to Ashes' innate ability, and it can interfere with friendly witchcraft as readily as hostile magic. Firearms, ranged bombardment, wide-area attacks, and opponents who can match her speed remain counters to a fighting style built around closing distance. (Chapters 167–169 and 1103–1106)

Her tactical development is clearest in cooperative operations. She can formulate branching plans, operate the Stone of Flight by forcing more magic through it, brace Andrea's large-caliber weapon, communicate over sigils, and act as a rear guard while others evacuate. She is less gifted than Tilly at artifact control and less precise than Andrea at range. Her value lies in connecting those specialties—absorbing close pressure long enough for the team's decisive ability to work. (Chapters 917–918 and 1151–1161)

Transcendent state and divine power

Ashes becomes a Transcendent by consciously lifting the limit that protects her body and accepting the magic converging on her during battle. Her stated aim is to protect the trapped witches. The change intensifies strength, speed, perception, and access to magic beyond normal bodily enhancement; she perceives a sea associated with the Realm of Mind and generates golden lightning described as divine power. The lightning can burn a battlefield, penetrate an anti-magic field, and destroy opponents whose defenses withstand conventional attacks. (Chapters 1163–1166)

This power resembles the output of the Sigil of God's Will but is produced without the artifact. Ashes does not explain a reproducible casting method: she directs magic into her sword, gathers power over time, and releases thunder, while her greatsword serves as focus and close-combat weapon. A single strike badly injures but does not kill evolved Ursrook, and repeated use becomes harder to aim. Her final attack succeeds only because she immobilizes him and Lightning destroys the Magic Stone supporting his corruption and shield. The victory is therefore an interaction between Transcendent power, Ashes' grapple, Lightning's explosives, and the failure of Ursrook's artifact—not evidence that the new state has no counter. (Chapters 1163–1166)

The limiting cost is terminal in the demonstrated case. Unrestricted magic rebounds through Ashes, erodes bodily control, dissolves flesh, and risks either annihilation or a loss of humanity. She describes the final release as “burning” herself and disintegrates after exceeding what her body can bear. Lan later claims that Transcendents leave marks in the Realm of Mind, and Roland hopes such a mark could allow Ashes to return. No retrieval occurs by Chapter 1238, and the claim may originate in information controlled by the same higher power whose reliability Roland doubts. (Chapters 1165–1166 and 1224–1232)

Relationships

  • Tilly Wimbledon: Tilly rescues and names Ashes, gives her a place in the palace, and becomes the center of her loyalty. Ashes serves as guard, confidante, domestic companion, and later acknowledged romantic partner. Their kiss before the Taquila operation makes a long-standing intimacy explicit, and Ashes' last request is that Tilly be told she likes her. (Chapters 156, 168, 531, 596, 682, 837, 1152, and 1166)
  • Roland Wimbledon: Ashes first remembers Roland as a contemptible prince and expects his witch refuge to collapse. The Carter test, the new sword, and Neverwinter's conduct persuade her that he can resist the Church and build a shared society. She later accepts missions under his command and trusts his strategic project, though her protective arguments with him remain direct. (Chapters 158–169, 285–286, 837, and 1103–1151)
  • Wendy: Ashes unknowingly helps Wendy escape the Old Holy City monastery. Their reunion establishes both the cruelty Ashes survived and the success of Roland's sanctuary. Wendy's refusal to leave initially frustrates Ashes, but the two later serve the same community and share concern for Tilly. (Chapters 157–158, 530, and 1151–1152)
  • Andrea Quinn: Andrea is a teasing rival and trusted combat partner. Their games and arguments conceal mutual respect; they campaign together in the Southernmost Region, and Ashes protects and braces Andrea during the ambush. Andrea's grief after Ashes' death centers on having lost the rival she still intended to surpass. (Chapters 382, 485, 715–725, 837, 1158–1160, and 1167)
  • Maggie: Maggie carries messages between Tilly and Ashes, accompanies her early Border Town visit, and remains an affectionate companion whom Ashes feeds and pats. In the final operation, Maggie transports the wounded after Ashes orders the retreat. (Chapters 163–169, 485, 851, and 1161–1163)
  • Lightning: Ashes treats Lightning as a capable scout and ultimately entrusts her with the retreat order. Lightning disobeys the implied finality of that order, returns with grenades, and creates the opening for Ashes' last strike. She receives Ashes' message to Tilly and is deeply changed by witnessing her death. (Chapters 917, 1151, and 1161–1178)
  • Lorgar Burnflame: Lorgar seeks Ashes as the strongest opponent available. Their duel lets Ashes demonstrate controlled combat rather than hostility, after which she directs Lorgar toward healing and the larger anti-demon struggle. (Chapters 715–725, 760–770, and 817–850)
  • Iffy: Iffy's origin in Bloodfang initially places her across an internal divide from Ashes. Their joint Taquila reconnaissance proves that divide has been overcome: Iffy worries about Ashes' safety, critiques her plan, and catches her dangerous fall with a Magic Cage. (Chapters 589–598 and 915–918)
  • Magic Slayer: Ursrook is the opponent who exposes the ceiling of Ashes' Extraordinary strength and forces her final choice. Both evolve during their last fight; his adaptation, corruption, and anti-magic control nearly defeat her before Lightning's intervention lets Ashes destroy him at the cost of her body. (Chapters 1103–1106 and 1159–1167)

Items

  • Ashes' Greatsword: Her signature oversized weapon. Roland and Anna replace her damaged iron sword with a steel one, and a later God’s Stone version combines her physical force with anti-magic suppression. Its half-melted remains are placed before her empty tomb. (Chapters 156–169, 1103, and 1167–1168)
  • God's Stone of Retaliation: Anti-magic material does not suppress Ashes' self-directed Extraordinary enhancement. She can therefore fight while carrying it, and the material in her greatsword disrupts external magic, though Ursrook's cyclone is only partially suppressed. (Chapters 156–159, 530, and 1103–1104)
  • Sigil of Listening: The ambush unit uses this paired communication artifact to coordinate with Lightning and the supporting force. Ashes carries it until Andrea takes it to issue urgent orders. (Chapters 1159–1161)
  • Sigil of God's Will: Ancient offensive sigils establish the comparison for divine lightning. Ashes does not use one in her final transformation; witnesses emphasize that her Transcendent power creates a stronger and more sustained phenomenon without the artifact. (Chapters 1103, 1163, and 1165)
  • Charming Beauty: The Fjords ship transports Tilly's witches between Sleeping Island and Border Town. Ashes uses it during the exchange that helps unite the two witch communities. (Chapters 320, 324, and 485)
