Maggie
Maggie is a transformation witch whose ability to assume avian and flying-beast forms makes her one of Neverwinter's most versatile aerial operatives. Originally a courier for Tilly Wimbledon, she chooses Border Town as her home, becomes Lightning's closest exploration partner, and grows from a long-range messenger into a scout, rescuer, transport, and battlefield support witch.
Biography
Western Region Consolidation and Witch Cooperation
Maggie first reaches Border Town while searching for Ashes on Tilly's behalf. Although she has already spent months carrying messages among witches in hiding, the safety and fellowship she encounters in the town give her something she had not possessed while sleeping in the rafters of a King's City slum. She quickly befriends Lightning and tells Ashes that she wants to stay because Roland eats with the witches and treats them unlike hostile nobles. Ashes accepts that choice while asking Maggie to preserve the connection with Sleeping Island through monthly reports and emergency evacuation work. Maggie consequently joins the Witch Alliance without abandoning Tilly: her flights carry news and letters in both directions, and her reports help Tilly and Roland begin practical cooperation. (Chapters 163–174 and 222)
That liaison role soon becomes active field service. Maggie guides the Charming Beauty toward Graycastle with Sleeping Island's first exchange group and helps escort the Cloud Gazer that receives them. Later, while exploring west with Lightning, she helps discover the red mist and the demon settlement beyond the snow-capped mountain. When demons attack the subsequent reconnaissance expedition, Maggie sees a flying mount, transforms into a larger version of it, catches the falling Nightingale, and works with her to defeat a pursuer. She then carries the badly wounded Roland back ahead of the balloon so Nana can treat him. The rescue turns a messenger valued mainly for mobility into an evolved witch capable of carrying companions through combat. (Chapters 255 and 289–300)
Sleeping Island Alliance and the Struggle for Graycastle
With her evolved form tested, Maggie takes on missions that require both precise observation and heavy transport. During the air raid on King's City she flies ahead of the Cloud Gazer as a white-tailed eagle, using eyesight superior to the crew's observation instruments to identify roads and guide the balloon. Her work with Lightning also remains exploratory and sometimes reckless: the pair enter the underground ruins in the Concealing Forest, and later attack demons without permission. Maggie survives an electrical strike in her giant form and helps bring the bodies home, but Nightingale's reprimand makes clear that courage without a safe plan can endanger the whole Witch Union. (Chapters 303–319 and 395–398)
The same mobility repeatedly lets Maggie turn other witches' plans into successful rescues. At Fallen Dragon Ridge, she answers Nightingale's flare, lands beside the tower hard enough to crush part of its walls, and extracts Nightingale and Marquess Spear. She then carries Spear to Border Town, returns with Ashes and Andrea, and continues ferrying people while the witches break the church's control over the city. During the Western Region rebellion she also delivers Echo and drops a bag of explosives on a rebel watchtower. These operations establish her as Neverwinter's fastest practical link between distant cities, not merely a courier between witch communities. (Chapters 407–419 and 452–458)
King's City, the Church, and the Soul Battlefield
Maggie's place within the union is tested when Iffy uses a magic cage to restrain and injure her, regarding a transformation witch as an inferior “assistant.” Maggie initially dreads fighting back, but accepts a formal duel after Nightingale explains that victory would defend other non-combat witches subjected to the same hierarchy. She climbs beyond Iffy's range as a bluebird, returns from the sunward sky, changes back before entering the cage's reach, and uses a pistol loaded with Roland's nonlethal rubber rounds to incapacitate her opponent. The victory is not treated as personal revenge: by the northern campaign, Maggie is willing to greet Iffy, while Iffy understands that utility and combat labels do not determine a witch's worth. (Chapters 533–540 and 616)
Her combat contribution thereafter depends on cooperation rather than a single destructive power. In the ambush beyond the snow-capped mountain, Maggie evacuates Sylvie from a bait balloon, kills a Devilbeast by overpowering it in the air, catches the falling Agatha, and helps the group subdue the remaining demon. During the Church's advance from Hermes, she and Lightning provide reconnaissance and artillery guidance. When a Pure Witch turns into a locust swarm, Maggie switches to a swallow to herd the insects together and then to a larger predatory form to swallow the dispersed enemy. These encounters show how her ability becomes dangerous through selection of the right form, firearms, and coordination with specialists such as Lightning, Sylvie, Agatha, and the First Army. (Chapters 545–553 and 609–623)
Taquila's Return and the Southernmost Campaign
As Neverwinter's campaigns widen, Maggie becomes part of the city's ordinary strategic infrastructure. Roland assigns her to construction lifts with Hummingbird and lightened loads; she also competes in Witch Union training, hunts and maps with the Exploration Group, patrols north of the mountains, and carries witches or officials to places that would otherwise require days of travel. Her discovery of an abnormal demonic-beast trail helps warn the Great Snow Mountain garrison, while her repeated rescues make her transformed appearance familiar rather than frightening to Neverwinter's residents. By the time Lorgar arrives from the Southernmost Region, other witches describe Maggie as a formidable full-body transformation witch, but Maggie herself continues to approach exploration through companionship, shared food, and practical work rather than status. (Chapters 663–720, 751–772, and 804–831)
Hermes, the Northern Expedition, and the Third Border City
Maggie welcomes Lorgar into the Exploration Group and helps demonstrate that its expeditions are collective undertakings rather than solitary challenges. She then serves as the lift platform for the “East Wind” bombing apparatus during the Hermes campaign: Hummingbird reduces the carrier's weight, Lightning navigates, and Maggie supplies the flexible flight and dive needed for accurate releases. Later, as part of the First Army's Flight Squad, she and Lightning hide above the battlefield and stand ready to strike demons that escape Andrea's long-range fire, although the plan allows them only one such attack before withdrawal. (Chapters 851–853, 886–890, and 973–974)
Her partnership with Lightning becomes especially important after Lightning's encounter with the Magic Slayer. Maggie pecks her out of a dangerous trance, brings her and Sylvie back for treatment, and remains close while Lightning struggles with the fear left by the encounter. Maggie cannot remove that fear, but her concern and continued presence give Lightning a companion who notices when something is wrong even when Lightning tries to hide it. Their relationship therefore matures alongside their military role: they remain playful explorers, but they increasingly watch over one another in circumstances where a mistake can be fatal. (Chapters 1037–1044)
The First Battle of Divine Will and the Dream World
During the First Army's advance toward Taquila, Maggie and Lightning become the army's principal mobile reconnaissance pair. When Lightning leaves camp during an emergency, she entrusts Maggie with finding the wounded Lorgar; Maggie succeeds and gets her to Nana. The pair later spend months under pressure on the frontier, mapping the ground behind Taquila and maintaining the outer defense. In the ambush against the demon supply line, Maggie scouts for the Seagull team, detects the approaching Magic Slayer, rams a Spider Demon to interrupt its attack, and continues helping Lightning reduce the Mad Demons despite injuring her shoulder. When the survivors must withdraw, she carries them away on the ground after flight becomes unsafe. (Chapters 1079–1087, 1137, and 1150–1165)
Maggie's sharp eye also spots Ursrook's dropped letter, allowing Neverwinter to reconstruct and decipher intelligence that changes its understanding of the demons' plans. After only a brief return from the front, she accepts a new expedition with Lightning into the mountains north of Everwinter. There she acts as hunter, shelter, and advance scout, using a snowy-owl form to approach the great rift before an Eye Demon forces the pair to retreat and reassess. They ultimately return to Neverwinter dirty from the long journey but carrying confirmation of a vast God's Stone deposit and a report of red mist north of the range. At her latest appearance in the supplied corpus, Maggie remains an active explorer whose reconnaissance directly informs the coming defense. (Chapters 1175–1178, 1204–1205, and 1229)
Appearance and personality
Maggie is an adult, but in human form she is so short that she reaches only Ashes' waist and is repeatedly mistaken for a young girl. Her defining feature is extremely long white hair, which can nearly cover her body and hangs close to the floor. Her favored pigeon form is conspicuously round and much larger than an ordinary pigeon; after long service on the frontier, Roland remarks that she looks more like a goose. Her evolved flying-beast form is initially described as a brown, four-limbed creature about ten meters long with a wingspan of roughly fifteen meters, three eyes, a broad toothed mouth, and membranous wings. It grows still larger over time. (Chapters 163, 300, 533, 1137, and 1178)
She is direct, sociable, and strongly motivated by food, especially grilled meat and dried fish. Her speech often ends in birdlike “coo” or “aw” sounds even in human or giant form. Maggie can be impulsive and sometimes follows Lightning into danger, yet she repeatedly chooses rescue over hesitation and remains attentive to frightened or injured companions. Her uncomplicated friendliness also crosses divisions that trouble other witches: she stays loyal to both Tilly and her new home, forgives Iffy enough to greet her during the northern campaign, befriends Lorgar and Joan, and is one of the few new witches who approaches the severe Ashes without fear. (Chapters 166, 300, 535, 616, 852, 958, and 1106)
Magic and abilities
Maggie's magic is a full-body transformation ability centered on flying creatures. The supplied corpus does not show her awakening, so its original cause is unknown; by her first appearance she is already an experienced avian courier. Her later evolution greatly expands the size, strength, and tactical uses of the forms she can assume.
Avian transformation
Maggie can become a bird species only after seeing it. Transformation produces a white radiance and physically reshapes her body, while her long hair encloses her clothing and small carried belongings rather than destroying them. The chosen form supplies corresponding physical traits: as a white-tailed eagle she can identify roads and vehicles more clearly than observers using a viewing instrument, while a snowy owl gives her an inconspicuous form suited to daylight or night scouting in the northern mountains. Sailors also rely on her seagull form to guide a ship along a new coastal route. The text demonstrates these sensory and navigational effects but does not explain how her magic reproduces each species' instincts. (Chapters 163, 174, 255, 307, 767, and 1205)
Changing shape is the expensive part of the ability; maintaining a completed form consumes little magic. Before evolving, Maggie has medium magical capacity and can transform about four or five times in a day. After her evolution, her reserve increases enough for roughly seven or eight changes. God's Stones of Retaliation suppress the ability, and she cannot safely transport a God's Stone projectile in the same way Lightning can carry one at the end of a rope. These restrictions make form selection and the timing of each change important on long missions. (Chapters 174, 300, and 1151)
Evolved flying-beast form
Maggie's evolution occurs during the demon attack near the snow-capped mountain, when the need to catch Nightingale leads her to reproduce a Devilbeast-like flying mount she has just seen. Nightingale observes that Maggie's previously cyclonic magic has cohered into the fixed image of outstretched white wings. Agatha later summarizes the evolved ability as transformation into anything capable of flight, including a demon mount; within the supplied chapters, its demonstrated repertoire remains birds and Devilbeast-derived forms rather than imaginary creatures. (Chapters 295–300 and 719)
The initial giant form can carry two witches while maintaining altitude and, when fully loaded, sustains about eighty kilometers per hour. Holding the form uses relatively little magic, but its greater transformation cost and the physical strain of prolonged flight remain limiting factors. After one encounter, Lightning judges the body durable enough to endure contact with red mist and a demon's electrical strike with little lasting injury, although the strike briefly knocks Maggie unconscious; other battles show that her size makes her an easy target for spears, cages, and similar attacks. By the Taquila campaign she is larger than two ordinary Devilbeasts, yet the practical response to a superior enemy remains retreat rather than relying on bulk alone. (Chapters 300, 396, 533–534, and 1137)
Maggie learns to exploit rapid changes in size and shape. While carrying Nightingale, she shrinks from the giant form to a pigeon so a thrown spear passes through the space they occupied, then immediately resumes the larger body; in later fights she uses the giant form to catch falling allies, overpower enemy mounts, ram Spider Demons, and carry wounded companions. She also transforms into predator species suited to a particular enemy, as when a swallow and then a larger bird counter a Pure Witch's locust swarm. These applications are strongest when another witch supplies targeting, weight reduction, concealment, or ranged offense. (Chapters 296, 416–419, 550, 623, 887–888, and 1161–1163)
Aerial reconnaissance and combat support
Years of flying give Maggie practical navigation, speed estimation, hunting, and fieldcraft beyond the raw mechanics of transformation. She maps routes with Lightning, recognizes terrain from the air, carries heavy equipment through otherwise inaccessible ground, and can conceal herself among local birds while approaching a target. Her observation remains fallible: after she makes eye contact with an Eye Demon at the northern rift, a Senior Demon immediately checks the local snowy owls, prompting her and Lightning to abandon the disguise and report the danger. (Chapters 402, 593, 1037, 1150, and 1204–1205)
Maggie also trains with firearms and develops a combined aerial fighting style. Her duel with Iffy demonstrates accurate pistol fire during a controlled descent, while later campaigns pair her with Lightning for artillery spotting, emergency interception, and aerial bombing. Hummingbird's weight reduction lets her carry the East Wind bomb rack, and the Seagull team uses her as a forward scout. She is not shown receiving the formal combat education of the ancient Union, and several operations explicitly limit her to one strike or withdrawal when stronger demons appear; her effectiveness comes from mobility, adaptable forms, and teamwork rather than invulnerability. (Chapters 535, 623, 719, 887–888, 973–974, and 1151–1163)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Avian transformation | 163–174 | First demonstrated changing into birds she has observed; transforming is costly, while maintaining a chosen form consumes relatively little magic. |
| Evolved flying-beast transformation | 295–300 | The need to catch Nightingale evolves her magic into transformation as larger flight-capable creatures, first a Devilbeast-like white mount. |
Relationships
- Lightning: Maggie's closest friend and exploration partner. Their first meeting nearly ends with Lightning eating her pigeon form, but the two soon become an inseparable scouting team that shares field camps, maps the wilderness, and repeatedly rescues one another. (Chapters 165–166, 289–297, and 1204–1205)
- Ashes: Maggie is loyal to Ashes while still choosing a different home. Ashes entrusts her with connecting Sleeping Island and Border Town, and Maggie's unguarded affection remains one of the few friendships that Ashes accepts without reserve. (Chapters 163–171 and 1106)
