God's Stone of Retaliation

History

God's Stones of Retaliation are introduced as the established defense against witch magic. The Church mines, grades, and distributes them, while nobles set worked pieces into pendants and buildings. Their reputation is so closely tied to orthodox teaching that Barov uses Roland's lack of fear around them as evidence against the claim that the prince is controlled by a devil. Roland instead treats the stones as material with observable properties, acquiring samples and building their effects into experiments, security plans, and military operations. (Chapters 71, 79, and 97–101)

As Neverwinter's conflict with the Church expands, the stones cease to be only symbols of religious authority. Ashes carries a greatsword made from the material, soldiers and agents wear pendants, and prisons or battle positions use embedded stones to deny witches easy access. Witches learn to exploit the boundary of the suppression field or rely on physical effects that were completed before entering it. During the assault described in Chapter 222, for example, Lotus raises an earthen barrier outside the protected section; the stone cannot erase the wall after it has formed. Neverwinter eventually manufactures and deploys its own protective equipment while continuing to study the mineral's origin. Its soldiers use stones against hostile witches and demonic magic, but commanders must also account for the danger posed to allied witches. The material remains relevant through the latest supplied chapter: in the real world it is still a standard explanation for a suddenly vanished magical reaction, whereas Roland Wimbledon notes that no such stones exist inside the Dream World. Properties and use

The stone suppresses active magic within a radius whose size depends on the specimen's quality. Entering that field prevents most witches from invoking or sustaining their abilities, and a sufficiently strong piece can nullify magical defenses or conceal nearby magic from perception. The effect is spatial rather than a general destruction of magical products: earth, flame-heated matter, or other changes completed outside the field can remain physically present after the originating ability is suppressed. (Chapters 97–101 and 222)

Worked forms include pendants, wall inlays, prison restraints, weapons, and larger mined bodies. A luminous, high-grade prism examined by Nightingale withstands revolver fire with only a surface mark, showing that at least some specimens are exceptionally durable as well as suppressive. Quality is not uniform, however, and the corpus does not establish a single fixed radius or strength for every stone. Users therefore have to test a particular piece rather than treating all examples as interchangeable. (Chapters 79 and 273)

The stone is not selective. It can protect a witch from another ability, but it also disables the wearer's own magic, which is why combat witches may carry removable pieces or coordinate with ordinary soldiers. It likewise cannot negate purely physical skill: Ashes remains a formidable Extraordinary while wielding a greatsword made from the mineral, and firearms or previously formed obstacles continue to work inside a suppression zone. The item consequently changes the terms of a confrontation without guaranteeing victory. (Chapters 156, 222, 415, and 532)
