Sigil of Listening
History
Roland learns of the Sigil of Listening from an ancient Union text while studying recovered magic stones with Agatha. The device requires an Echo Stone and a Marking Stone. Lightning had recovered the former from ruins, while Tilly Wimbledon brought artifacts that could supply the latter. Agatha's knowledge makes assembly possible, turning fragments from separate expeditions into Neverwinter's first long-distance magical communicator. (Chapter 391)
The First Army quickly adopts paired sigils for observation and fire control. During the campaign against the Church, Lightning reports the fall of artillery shells from outside the gun crews' line of sight, allowing Roland Wimbledon to correct their aim. Later sets connect scouts, the General Staff, aircraft, and isolated teams across the Fertile Plains. They carry warnings about demon movements, coordinate the Taquila operation, and relay the discovery of the demons' new route through the continental ridge. (Chapters 620, 966, 1079, 1159–1165, and 1229)
Properties and use
The sigil is divided into linked components that transmit speech across dozens of miles. It functions as a magical field radio: one operator speaks through a component and a distant partner hears the report through its mate. The exact range depends on the magic stones and construction rather than being unlimited. At extreme distance reception becomes unclear, as Lightning and Maggie discover after passing beyond Everwinter and only faintly hearing a later message. (Chapters 391 and 1229)
Because each connection depends on its paired pieces, distribution matters. Neverwinter assigns sigils to observers and commanders whose information has immediate tactical value. The device carries voices but does not replace maps, reconnaissance, or judgment; reports still need to identify positions, and operators can lose contact through distance or hostile conditions. Its scarce magical components also prevent the network from becoming as ubiquitous as Roland's remembered telephones. (Chapters 391, 620, and 966)
