Anna

Anna is the first witch rescued by Roland Wimbledon, his closest technical collaborator, and eventually the queen of Graycastle and minister of its Department of Industry. Her ability develops from ordinary flame into remotely controlled Heart Fire and then into the extraordinarily precise Blackfire after she applies her scientific education to magic. That development makes her indispensable to Neverwinter's early industrialization, but her importance is not limited to production: she defends Border Town, joins operations against Timothy and the demons, learns the ancient craft of making sigils, and chooses a public political role rather than remaining protected behind Roland's authority.

Biography

Condemned by Border Town and given a choice

Anna awakens as a witch during a collapse at the North Mine. When she finds her injured father, another miner is stealing from him and attacks the rescuers; Anna kills the attacker with fire and helps bring her father out. Her father reports her to the patrol the following morning for the reward offered for identifying a witch. By the time Roland questions her in prison, she has accepted the Church's explanation that her power is sinful and waits calmly for execution rather than expecting rescue. Her composure is therefore not a sign that the betrayal does not matter, but the result of a life that has temporarily lost its value to her. (Chapter 4)

Roland breaks the God's Stone of Retaliation hanging around her neck and asks her to demonstrate her power. Anna surrounds herself with flame hot enough to melt the iron bars while remaining unburned, then steps out of the cell and asks whether he will kill her. Instead, he covers her and offers employment. The next day's execution is staged with another condemned prisoner, and Anna is given food, clothing, a safe room, and a contract paying one gold royal each month. Her first assignments establish the pattern of their collaboration. Learning changes the flame

Anna approaches literacy and natural science with the same concentration she applies to magic. She borrows Scroll's temporary copies of Roland's textbooks, asks questions until she understands them, and advances from basic reading to mathematics and physics in a few months. Her education quickly becomes collaborative rather than passive. When Roland sketches a paddle-wheel conversion for a steamship, Anna identifies the exposed wheel's wasted motion and independently approaches the idea of a submerged propeller. That knowledge triggers her second and more radical ability evolution. While considering matter as particles and temperature as their motion, Anna imagines her green flame at a microscopic scale. The flame changes into a black filament that can cut an iron ingot with an extremely narrow heat-affected area. By the following morning, Nightingale sees Anna's formerly vortex-like magic condensed into an opaque rotating cube. Tests show that the new Blackfire can assume sheets, blocks, lines, or threads and can be made rigid or flexible, while Anna controls the temperature of different portions separately. She then joins the long-range mission against Timothy's palace, supplying heat for the balloon while Wendy, Lightning, and the other witches handle propulsion, release, scouting, and security. The attack is designed as a warning rather than an assassination, and Anna's participation demonstrates that she can operate inside a coordinated mission rather than only in a workshop. The volume of demands exposes a persistent limitation: Anna has a vast reserve, but there is still only one of her. Roland consequently reserves her for high-value precision work and invests in standardized equipment, apprentices, and alternative witches capable of taking smaller tasks. The steel gunboat built for the campaign down the Redwater River embodies that change. Anna's Blackfire makes its difficult hull and high-precision parts possible, but the vessel operates through a larger system of crews, artillery, engines, logistics, and industrial supply. She also manufactures scarce cannon shells whose value is explicitly recognized by the artillerymen. The Church war and truths shared

As Roland's fleet advances on King's City and the war with the Church approaches, Anna continues to produce weapons while also returning to direct field operations. Her shells arm the steel flagship and artillery. Against demons near the snow mountain, she is designated the ace of a witch-led team and practices with the Sigil of God's Will. Activating the sigil releases a guided burst of destructive light and thunder over a broad area, but its God's Stone-like interference prevents her from using Blackfire at the same time. Anna also studies the ancient technology behind compound sigils. Agatha chooses her as an assistant because of her learning ability and teaches her how demon blood, witch blood, God's Stones, magic stones, and a magic vein are combined before the base solidifies. When Agatha has already lost blood, Anna cuts her own wrist and completes two attempts herself, reasoning that Nana can close a wound but cannot instantly replace blood. A public partner and Graycastle's queen

After speaking with Anna, Nightingale returns to Roland relieved but keeps their conversation private. The exact agreement between the two women is not disclosed in the supplied chapters. What is explicit is that Anna remains firm that she will not simply share Roland on terms chosen for her, while also refusing to punish Nightingale for honest feelings. At the coronation, Anna and Roland crown one another, making her Graycastle's queen at the same ceremony that formally establishes his kingship; their wedding follows as a public rather than concealed union. Anna does not treat queenship as a reason to withdraw into ceremony. She oversees sections of the railway advance and tests the Blackriver armored train, whose artillery supports, electric equipment, and modular cars depend on the precision manufacturing base she helped create. The Battle of Divine Will also forces her to act as queen during Roland's absence. Anna continues solving specialized weapons problems. For the ambush of the Magic Slayer, she, Agatha, Lucia, and Andrea determine the dimensions and construction of a huge anti-magic cartridge whose God's Stone core must survive firing. Earlier projects also use her precision-made molds for anti-counterfeit currency, and the Snow Breeze's sea trial confirms that her industrial designs can be improved through reports from users rather than only her own inspection. Appearance and personality

When Roland first sees Anna in prison, she is a thin minor with bruises, a dusty face, soft features, sea-blue eyes, and a posture that remains straight despite her expectation of death. After she is cleaned and fed, her long flaxen hair, light freckles across the bridge of her nose, and youthful color become more visible. Later descriptions emphasize her clear or lake-blue eyes. Anna is quiet, direct, and unusually difficult to intimidate. She rarely uses many words when a plain answer is sufficient, whether she is expecting execution, telling Roland what she wants, or questioning a military report. Her calm exterior coexists with strong attachment and decisive action: concern for Roland takes her from the hospital to the breached wall, and concern for wounded soldiers leads her to challenge assumptions in a command meeting. Magic and abilities

Anna's magic is a succession of related manifestations rather than three wholly independent powers. Ordinary flame is her awakened ability, Heart Fire appears when she survives adulthood, and Blackfire emerges after a deeper conceptual evolution. Original flame

Anna initially produces ordinary-looking fire around her body or at a chosen nearby point. Anna is not burned by her own flame, including when her clothing is destroyed, but people and objects around her remain exposed to radiant heat and combustion. Before adulthood, the flame is comparatively broad and direct. Anna can change its output and place it where she touches, but it lacks the later forms' independent motion and fine geometry. Sustained large-scale use drains her reserve: holding the wall of fire until the battle ends leaves her pale and unconscious. Heart Fire

On her Day of Adulthood, Anna's flame changes to jade green and can remain separate from her body while following her will. Roland names it Heart of Fire or Heart Fire. In initial tests it can travel roughly five yards before disappearing, shift instantly between near-body temperature and much greater heat, change size and speed, and take shapes rather than merely following natural flame behavior. Heart Fire's gentle setting allows contact without burning, while its hotter state continues to support forging and combat. Its most important acquisition condition is not fully certain. Nightingale perceives Anna's evolved reserve as a fist-sized opaque cube rather than the fog or vortex typical of witches. Even weak God's Stones disrupt Blackfire, activating the Sigil of God's Will prevents Anna from using her own ability, and channeling her reserve places severe strain on Spear. Engineering, research, and combat

Anna has no inherited technical education when Roland meets her, but becomes an advanced practical engineer through Scroll's books, Roland's lessons, and sustained design work. She understands mathematical and physical principles well enough to identify flaws, propose mechanisms, oversee trials, and ask operators for performance data. Her engineering ability is learned rather than magical, while Blackfire functions as an unusually capable tool. In combat, she can incinerate targets or erect fire barriers directly, and her reserve makes her a powerful operator of compound sigils. Even so, she is not primarily a trained close-combat fighter. Later forces usually protect her or keep her in production because losing her would damage the entire industrial system.
