History

Roland Wimbledon builds Cloud Gazer as a larger successor to Neverwinter's first tethered balloon. Soraya forms a light, seamless coated envelope; Anna supplies controlled heat; and Wendy provides directional wind. The enlarged basket carries Roland and several witches during a successful trial to the southern coast, after which he names the craft Cloud Gazer. (Chapter 251)

The balloon becomes Neverwinter's first practical aerial observation and transport platform. It gives residents and visiting merchants a view from the air, carries witch teams over terrain that would take much longer to cross, and supports reconnaissance beyond the southern mountains. Lightning and Maggie scout around it and protect expeditions that would otherwise have limited warning of threats. (Chapters 253, 290, 298, and 330)

Roland also adapts Cloud Gazer for warfare. Its altitude allows a small crew to test and later deliver bombs beyond city walls, giving the Western Region a way to demonstrate reach over King's City without fighting through its defenses. The craft's slow speed and dependence on witches make long missions exhausting and risky, however. Later powered and fixed-wing aircraft replace many of its roles, though its surveys remain part of Neverwinter's accumulated knowledge. (Chapters 303–307 and 599)

Properties and use

Cloud Gazer uses hot air for lift. Its coated envelope is lighter and tougher than the earlier combination of canvas and animal membrane, and its volume is roughly four times larger, allowing a covered basket to hold more than ten people during ordinary operation. Anna must continually heat the air through an opening in the awning, while Wendy's wind moves and steers the balloon. (Chapter 251)

The craft can cross mountains and remain high enough for observation or bombing, but it is far slower than Lightning's flight and cannot operate independently of suitable witches. Payload also matters: fitting a heavy bomb reduces space and forces Roland to limit the mission crew. Weather, long travel time, overnight exposure, and the need to protect non-combat operators make route planning essential. (Chapters 290 and 303)
