Sigil of Recording

History

Roland Wimbledon introduces the Sigil of Recording to produce a "magic movie." The compound device is a legacy of the Taquila Age assembled from valuable demon magic stones. Rather than manipulate time, it records a complete scene and later reconstructs that scene around its viewers, giving Neverwinter a medium more immersive than theater or conventional images. (Chapters 1006–1007)

Roland combines the sigil with Summer's reconstruction ability and Echo's sound work. Performers can rehearse against reconstructed scenes, then make a single final recording after the device is fully charged. The same process preserves evidence: Summer records crucial portions of Ashes' last battle, allowing Neverwinter's leaders to study what happened after the surviving team returns. (Chapters 1007 and 1186)

During the Bloody Moon, a public playback changes unexpectedly, traps the audience in a trance, and pushes its witch operator out of the activation process. The incident links the device to the broader disturbance affecting magical machinery. Its ordinary function remains valuable, but its behavior under large external magic fluctuations is no longer assumed to be completely predictable. (Chapter 1219)

Properties and use

The sigil records both space and events, then surrounds viewers with their playback. It requires about twelve hours of charging. Once recording starts, interruption stops the process, and an error can only be removed by recharging and overwriting the entire stored scene. Summer's controllable reconstructions and Echo's dubbing help work around the absence of ordinary editing and recorded sound. (Chapter 1007)

Recording and playback use a compound base and an inserted magic stone in distinct ways. Once converted to playback, the sigil cannot be returned to recording mode; forcibly removing the stone destroys it. That irreversibility is a drawback for filmmaking but a protection against tampering when the stored scene is intended as historical evidence. Scarce Senior Demon stones and dependence on a witch's magic further limit production. (Chapters 1006–1007)
